I think the most common way is total medal count. (At least in america and online sites it is.) I think since NZ looks better in Gold medal count, that may be why NZ (and their media) making gold medal count the "common way".

Actually they still won, they came 9th. New Zealand came 14th.

But don't worry Kiwis, you all won if you look at the medals mathematically. The olympics are all about bigger countries winning more medals (except India of course). But this is unfair to the less populous countries. So we have medalspercapita.com, which shows medals proportionally to the size (like the name implies). And NZ came 3rd:
