Discussions / Dysfunction in Extended Families.
« on: November 16, 2011, 11:46:57 AM »

I was just browsing the forums and rain across the "bolliyan" topic. I've noticed most of these bolis are from the "bahu" jo apni sass nu ja nanad nu taahne maardi or something along the lines.

Is this a sign of significant dysfunction in our extended families?

There has to be some type of tension amongst the family as a new member joins them but reading through these bolis, some are pretty harsh!

Example: Meri sass badi kapatti, meri sass badi kapatti, pairi paun na deve jutti, main v jutti pauni aa, mundeyaa raazi reh ja gusse teri maa khadkaun aa

I'm sure they are a way of just teasing each other. However, for such annotations to occur, there has had to be signficant tension among the members. It just astonishes me that it occured to such extent!

Anyway, I'm starting to babble. Lets share some thoughts!

Fun Time / My Money!
« on: November 08, 2011, 01:18:05 PM »
There was a man who worked all of his life and saved all of his money. He was a real miser when it came to his money. He loved money more than just about anything, and just before he died, he said to his wife, "Now listen, when I die, I want you to take all my money and place it in the casket with me. I wanna take my money to the afterlife."

So he got his wife to promise him with all her heart that when he died, she would put all the money in the casket with him.

Well, one day he died. He was stretched out in the casket, the wife was sitting there in black next to her closest friend. When they finished the ceremony, just before the undertakers got ready to close the casket, the wife said "Wait just a minute!"

She had a shoe box with her, she came over with the box and placed it in the casket. Then the undertakers locked the casket down and rolled it away. Her friend said, "I hope you weren't crazy enough to put all that money in the casket."

"Yes," the wife said, "I promised. I'm a good Christian, I can't lie. I promised him that I was going to put that money in that casket with him."

"You mean to tell me you put every cent of his money in the casket with him?"

"I sure did. I got it all together, put it into my account and I wrote him a check."

Travel / Bubble-like hotel
« on: November 03, 2011, 02:04:51 PM »
Bubble-like hotel  France has got the latest hotel in the shape of the bubble. In the city of romance it is all in that style and even apartments. To spend the night under the stars and now you can do that with the accompanying luxury. Carine Mace said that she wanted a special place where she could celebrate her anniversary. She never thought of something normally you can see anywhere. Few people know about this place. Here, you sleep under the stars-there is nothing better than that.

A little away from the city this extraordinary hotel offers amazing views of the starry sky. With balloon, there are countless advantages, but most important, however- is adventure. It is a place of dreams. Located in the park, much like the houses on the tree. Balloon filled with air with a transparent dome and gives guests a spectacular view during the day and night. The interior is spacious and can match any room in the hotel with five stars. For one night you have to set aside 189 pounds. But in that's involved everything - accommodation, food, champagne...

Balloon retains the shape because of the air which is constantly changing in order to avoid moisture. Today's fast lifestyle does not allow enough time to stay in the countryside, and this is one of the rare opportunity to connect with nature. An unusual, but really attractive form of relaxation and fun.

Knowledge / World’s Most Expensive Books
« on: November 03, 2011, 01:45:10 PM »
World’s Most Expensive Books  They say that a picture is better than a thousand words. Maybe this saying can explain why the pictures are more expensive than the most expensive books. However, nothing can give you the right inside look into the author’s mind like the words carefully put together, especially if it is author that wrote them. And if the author is Leonardo da Vinci, even better. Getting into one’s mind for 30 million dollars (which is the price that Bill Gates paid) doesn’t sound too expensive. There are so many books in the list of the most expensive and best selling books. There are the ones that were sold in auctions, the ones sold outside auctions… Their rank changes by the month. This is the current list of the ten most expensive books in the world.

The Gutenberg Bible
This is the first ever printed book. It is believed that there are only 180 of them today, and that there are only 21 untouched. One of those is worth from 25 to 35 million dollars. It got its name after the inventor of the printing machine, Johannes Gutenberg, who shared the destiny of a number of mind that weren’t understood in their own time: he died poor and blind in 1468. Gutenberg Bible was in Latin and it was later decorated with miniatures and initials. It was published in 1455, and printed on 1 282 pages, in 200-300 copies.

The Codex Leicester
The book is named after Thomas Cock, the Count of Lester. It has 72 pages and it dates to 1717. In 1994, the owner of Microsoft, Bill Gates has bought it for 30.8 million dollars, which is the highest price paid for a book ever. It contains drawings and Leonardo’s scientific notes on water, rocks, fossils, air and light. It is interesting that Gates has transferred it to a CD.

The First Folio
Here, we have the first edition of Shakespeare’s plays which dates back to 1623. It was prepared by Shakespeare himself and published by his colleagues John Hemings and Henry Condell, seven years after the writer’s death. It contains 36 plays, around 20 of which are Shakespeare’s authentic.

Birds of America
The book of the American ornithologist and painter James Audubon was sold in 2000 for 8.8 million dollars, all of the 120 copies, to a sheik. It was supposed to be on an auction again, together with Shakespeare’s Firs Folio. Audubon’s book, often referred to as “the best picture book of all time”, it might beat the price of 10 million dollars. With one meter in height and with pictures of the birds in natural size it has the status of a national monument.

Traites Des Arbres Fruitiers
The book was published in 1768, as a work of French boranist Henri-Louis Duhamel du Monceau. It shows in detail, 16 types of fruit, their sorts and also includes illustrations. It was sold in an auction in Brussels for 4.5 million dollars.

Ptolemy’s Cosmography
Worth 3.9 million dollars, it was written between 90 and 170. The subject is the geocentric concept of the universe (Earth is the center of the world), which Copernicus did approve, but also the field theory, which connects the horoscope and the laws of physics (the four element theory) which is becoming more and more popular.

The Mercator Atlas of Europe
This atlas (evaluated price, 1.3 million dollars) is in the British library. Gerardus Mercator (1512-1594) is a Flemish cartographer that mapped the planet, and all of his maps, including the map if Europe from 1554, are shown in Duisburg, a city that led the cartographic workshop.

Tamerlane and Other Poems
The work of Edgar Allan Poe, who’s short stories are considered the forerunner of detective novels, is the first book that he wrote under the pseudonym “a Bostonian”, when he was only 14 years old. A copy of this rare book was sold in an auction for 662.500 dollars. Poe’s turbulent life (a gambler, an alcoholic) has always attracted readers, and his books have always attracted collectors.

Action Comics
This book presented Superman, the first real superhero to the world. The comic of Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster was published in 1938, in 880 copies. The antiquary edition was sold to an anonymous buyer for a million dollars.

Where the Wild Things Are
The book written by Maurice Sendak was a rarity in kids literature, when it was published, because it describes the dark side of their emotions. In that genre, its value is a record – 10.200 dollars.

News Khabran / Woman aged 50 years overnight
« on: November 03, 2011, 01:41:25 PM »

Woman aged 50 years overnight  Nguyen Thi Phuong from Vietnam could not see even in her ugliest dream what had happened to her in reality and only in a few months. The story is, believe it or not, about a 26-year-old woman who aged 50 years overnight and now at 26 looks like it is 80 years old.

Her story has left in shock even doctors, and her husband said that although his wife looks like a 80-year-old woman, his love has not faded. Since it happened Nguyen constantly covers the face with a mask because it is very wrinkled, in order to protect herself from prying eyes of other people.

While showing her wedding photo from the 2006, she said that five years ago she was beautiful, and not ugly like she is now.

She believes that her troubles were caused by an allergy to seafood and specifically mentions the reaction that occurred in 2008, when allergy scratched her, even while she was sleeping. In order to eliminate the itching, this woman bought a medicine in local pharmacy instead of going to the doctor. She decided that because she and her husband earned a little money and did not have money for a doctor.

After a month of using products, her skin was less itchy, but started to shoot and got old. Frightened woman then tried to find out some solution in a traditional medicine, but it did not help her skin to stop getting old. Her black hair, voice, teeth, and other healthy organs are evidence of her youth. Only her skin has been affected by the rapid aging. Some believe the condition is lipodystrophy, a rare syndrome that causes a layer of fatty tissue beneath the surface of the skin to disintegrate while the skin itself continues to grow at a startling pace, according to the Telegraph.

Doctors say she has a skin disorder due to use of treatment and that she is suffering from a rare disease caused by deteriorating tissue under the skin. Dr. Hoang Van Minh of the HCMC Medicine and Pharmacy University Hospital visited Nguyen in her hometown to run some tests on Tuesday. He believes she may have a rare condition caused by the presence of excessive mast cells, called mastocytosis.

Despite the various theories of other doctors, Dr. Hoang is 90 percent confident that Nguyen has mastocytosis, and has a treatment plan that could restore 50-70 percent of her skin, according to Thanh Nien News.

The only consolation this unhappy woman finds in her husband. She said that with him she feels more confident to live and work.

Knowledge / Halloween

History and Customs of Halloween

Most holidays commemorate or celebrate something. But what about Halloween? What is Halloween actually a celebration of? And how did this peculiar custom originate? Is it, as some claim, a kind of demon worship? Or is it just a harmless vestige of some ancient pagan ritual where folks get together for parties, dress up in costumes and bob for apples?    The word itself, "Halloween," actually has its origins in the Catholic Church. It comes from a contracted corruption of All Hallows Eve. November 1, "All Hollows Day" (or "All Saints Day"), is a Catholic day of observance in honor of saints. But, in the 5th century BC, in Celtic Ireland, summer officially ended on October 31. The holiday was called Samhain (sow-en), the Celtic New year.     One story says that, on that day, the disembodied spirits of all those who had died throughout the preceding year would come back in search of living bodies to possess for the next year. It was believed to be their only hope for the afterlife. The Celts believed all laws of space and time were suspended during this time, allowing the spirit world to intermingle with the living.       Naturally, the still-living did not want to be possessed. So on the night of October 31, villagers would extinguish the fires in their homes, to make them cold and undesirable. They would then dress up in all manner of ghoulish costumes (similar to today's Halloween costumes), and noisily parade around the neighborhood, being as destructive as possible in order to frighten away spirits looking for bodies to possess.       Probably a better explanation of why the Celts extinguished their fires was not to discourage spirit possession, but so that all the Celtic tribes could relight their fires from a common source, the Druidic fire that was kept burning in the Middle of Ireland, at Usinach.    Some accounts tell of how the Celts would burn someone at the stake who was thought to have already been possessed, as sort of a lesson to the spirits. Other accounts of Celtic history debunk these stories as myth.       The Romans adopted the Celtic practices as their own. But in the first century AD, Samhain was assimilated into celebrations of some of the other Roman traditions that took place in October, such as their day to honor Pomona, the Roman goddess of fruit and trees. The symbol of Pomona is the apple, which might explain the origin of our modern tradition of bobbing for apples on Halloween.        In Greek mythology, goddesses of the underworld were often used to invoke the Samhain. Popular costumes portray Hecate and Medusa. Hecate was the most favored goddess by Zeus, and wandered the emptiness between the worlds of life and death looking for souls of the dead. Both were considered serpent goddesses, and their ancient dark legends spawned myths such as vampires, who fed off the living using venom and snake-like fangs. Ritualistic dress includes snake adornments and three headed masks. Today, Hecate is often referred to as the goddess of witches.      The thrust of the practices also changed over time to become more ritualized. As belief in spirit possession waned, the practice of dressing up like hobgoblins, ghosts, and witches took on a more ceremonial role.       The custom of Halloween was brought to America in the 1840's by Irish immigrants fleeing their country's potato famine. At that time, the favorite pranks in New England included tipping over outhouses and unhinging fence gates.    The custom of trick-or-treat is thought to have originated not with the Irish Celts, but with a ninth-century European custom called souling. On November 2, All Souls Day, early Christians would walk from village to village begging for "soul cakes," made out of square pieces of bread with currants. The more soul cakes the beggars would receive, the more prayers they would promise to say on behalf of the dead relatives of the donors. At the time, it was believed that the dead remained in limbo for a time after death, and that prayer, even by strangers, could expedite a soul's passage to heaven.        The Jack-o-lantern custom probably comes from Irish folklore. As the tale is told, a man named Jack, who was notorious as a drunkard and trickster, tricked Satan into climbing a tree. Jack then carved an image of a cross in the tree's trunk, trapping the devil up the tree. Jack made a deal with the devil that, if he would never tempt him again, he would promise to let him down the tree. According to the folk tale, after Jack died, he was denied entrance to Heaven because of his evil ways, but he was also denied access to Hell because he had tricked the devil. Instead, the devil gave him a single ember to light his way through the frigid darkness. The ember was placed inside a hollowed-out turnip to keep it glowing longer.    The Irish used turnips as their "Jack's lanterns" originally. But when the immigrants came to America, they found that pumpkins were far more plentiful than turnips. So the Jack-O-Lantern in America was a hollowed-out pumpkin, lit with an ember. So, although some cults may have adopted Halloween as their favorite "holiday," the day itself did not grow out of evil practices. It grew out of the rituals of Celts celebrating a new year, and out of Medieval prayer rituals of Europeans. And today, even many churches have parties complete with Halloween costumes or pumpkin carving events for the kids. After all, the day itself is only as evil as one cares to make it.

Knowledge / Top 5 Deadliest Sports of 2011
« on: October 27, 2011, 01:39:14 PM »

Base Jumping:                 Base jumping is considered one of the worlds most deadly sports with a high overall fatality rating due to the nature of the sport, free falling from high altitudes with a large tarp strapped to your back. The sport is fairly simple over all with the main objective being to land safely however due to the low altitude there is no time to deal with problems. From jump to pulling the shoot the jumper has anywhere from 3-10 seconds depending on the height of the base. The most popular jumping places that will find are tall buildings, antennas, spans, bridges and cliffs. Since the fatality rate is so high the sport has been outlawed in many states, but that doesn’t stop most people.
Fatalities: 1/60 people
Rallying:                            Rallying, also known more popularly as rally car racing, is an extremely fast paced, outdoor version of auto racing. The tracks are generally on private/public roads typically made of dirt, gravel and paved sections. The cars driven by the racers are technically street-legal cars but highly modified and faster than any stock counterpart. The races operate with teams of two, a navigator and a driver: navigator has a detailed custom made map that shows individual dips, slopes, sand, hard spots, etc.
Worst Crash: Killed 80 spectators plus the drive, 100 more injured.
Free Climb/ Free Solo:                                     Free hand rock climbing is the most dangerous kind of rock climbing with no room for error. It involves the use of only your body to propel yourself up the rocky slope and maintain position. The reason for the level of danger is due to the lack of rope and equipment, meaning virtually none so a fall usually results in serious injury or death.
upon a fall.
Average Deaths: 113/year or 1/27,000 climbs

Big Wave Surfing:                    Big Wave Surfing Big wave surfing is a sport designed for the adrenalin junky. Far more dangerous than regular surfing, the waves for big wave surfing range from at least 20ft. and up, on the back of the wave. Due to the size and speed of the waves surfers could no longer paddle straight in, they have to be pulled into position in an art known as Tow Surfing. The massive size and force of the wave can cause serious injury or death, pushing the surfer any where from 10-50 feet below the surface. The biggest risk of wiping out on a big wave is the possibility of being stuck under by multiple consecutive waves or being slammed into a reef.
Surfing (regular) Deaths: Estimated 200/year
Super-bike Racing: Super-bike racing is a more advanced form of regular motorcycle racing and the bikes are highly modified and tuned by the manufacture. The sport demands speed and agility and because of the demands the risks go up, in some courses the riders reach speeds of up to 190mph. Although the riders wear very effective padding that could count as a suite of armor the speeds of their crashing impacts can only be absorbed so well.
Track Death Toll: Isle of Man track has claimed over 200 super-bike racers.

These ideas in my head are wringing my conscience
The love I feel is not yours to take
But you have it all the same although
You will never know this truth
My secret is safe and sound within myself
And I will bear my guilt alone
I cannot change the voice of my heart
But I can silence it for the sake of loyalty
So we will live and love and carry on
And perhaps in the next lifetime...

Knowledge / Some of the most amazing Anteaters!
« on: October 22, 2011, 06:13:48 PM »

Anteaters, while outwardly bizarre looking, are prime examples of Nature’s creatures evolving over millions of years to best utilize a distinct source of nutrition. In fact, these 10 “termite terminators” have perfected the art of ant-eating to such a fine degree they can eat little else, which isn’t a bad thing at all considering ants form up to 25% of Earth’s total animal biomass.

 Giant Anteater
Giant Anteaters aren’t really “giant” though they’re by far the largest of the four main species of the suborder Vermilingua (Latin for “worm tongue”). Native to South and Central America, the Giant Anteater’s body is about the size of an average German Shepherd dog – add in its long, bushy tail and you’re looking at a total length of up to 7 feet or 2.1 meters.

Toothless but possessed of wickedly sharp claws on its front feet, Giant Anteaters can consume roughly 30,000 ants and/or termites daily by slurping them up with its sticky 2ft (61cm) long tongue. They have few natural predators but are vulnerable to cougars, jaguars… and transport trucks.

Giant Anteaters bear one offspring at a time and the babies look much like the adults but in miniature. A baby Giant Anteater will spend most of its first year clinging to its mother’s back, presumably flicking up any stray ants she happens to miss.
 Silky Anteater
The Silky or Pygmy Anteater is also found in South and Central America but in more heavily forested areas compared to its Giant cousin. It’s also much smaller, weighing less than a pound and only growing up to 17.7 inches (about 450mm) in length.

The nocturnally active Silky Anteater is rarely seen, though zoologists do not consider it to be a threatened species. THat may change as the more isolated and impenetrable reaches of the upper Amazon become, er, less isolated and more penetrable.

If the image above appears somewhat odd, consider that it’s taken from a hand-colored lantern slide dating back to 1928 when the Crane Pacific Expedition was exploring the forests and offshore islands of Panama. Not the “Two-Toed” Anteater’s partially prehensile tail coiled around the tree branch, allowing it to rear up to an upright defensive position.
 Northern Tamandua
The Northern Tamandua can be found from southern Mexico down to the Pacific coastal forests of Ecuador and Peru.

With its long and sticky tongue, complete lack of teeth and a mainly hairless prehensile tail, the Northern Tamandua is perfectly adapted for living in jungle forests teeming with ants and other insects.

A smallish creature that can grow up to 50 inches (130cm) long including its tail, the Northern Tamandua has off-white to pale yellow fur with a contrasting “sweater vest” patch of deep black – it’s the Mister Rogers of anteaters!
 Southern Tamandua

The Southern Tamandua, also known as the Collared Anteater or Lesser Anteater, is found over a wide range of South America including the whole of Brazil. Like most other anteaters it has no teeth, but is equipped with sharp claws that make short work of ant and termite nests it sniffs out in rainforest trees. The Southern Tamandua will supplement its diet with bees on occasion. Bees, my God.

Lately it seems anteaters like the Southern Tamandua have appeared on the radar of hipsters looking for exotic pets. Perhaps they haven’t heard that anteaters like these are able to spray an exceptionally foul-smelling mist from their anal glands. Besides that, does Whole Foods even stock Purina Anteater Chow?
 Giant Armadillo
The Giant Armadillo may not be a pure, classic, capital-A “Anteater” as such, though the major portion of its diet consists of ants, grubs, and especially termites whose nests it digs deep into with tough, dedicated claws. Weighing up to 70 pounds (over 30kg), the Giant Armadillo is the largest member of the Armadillo family and though its range covers much of South America, it’s considered to be a vulnerable species.

So you think Giant Armadillos are obscure? Don’t tell this guy, he just might “obscure” you into next week. Seriously though, you’ve really gotta dig (pun intended) Giant Armadillos to devote this much time, money, skin & pain.

The Los Ocarros zoo park in Villavicencio, Colombia, features Giant Armadillos and acts as an educational resource for those interested in preserving this unusual creature. Humans are its only predators and although the Giant Armadillo is an insectivore for the most part, ranchers consider it a pest.
 Pink Fairy Armadillo
The Pink Fairy Armadillo doesn’t look like your average armadillo… or most anything else for that matter. This smallest of the armadillos is just 3.5 to 4.5 inches (90–115 mm) long, and spends most of its time underground “swimming” through loose, sandy soil.

The Pink Fairy Armadillo is unusual for armadillos in that its armored back plates aren’t attached to its bones along its length; only at the back end. Speaking of which, this curious creature’s posterior is also armor-plated and acts as sort of a “plug” when danger threatens and the creature dives head-first into its burrow.

So little is known about the Pink Fairy Armadillo’s lifestyle, reproduction rate and population count, the IUCN has given up trying to pinpoint its vulnerability status preferring to go with “Data Deficient”. The fact that the creatures only live in a small area of central Argentina, however, raises concerns for its future in the face of incremental habitat loss to human development.
 Aardvark
The Aardvark’s name, which means “Earth Pig”, is one of the few derived from the Afrikaans language of South Africa. With their pig snouts, mule ears and pink wrinkly skin, aardvarks can seem shockingly ugly to some. Maybe some cute baby aardvark pics will change that impression… nope, not one bit, and in fact it might have made it even worse.

Found only in Sub-Saharan Africa, aardvarks eat termites almost exclusively leading to their being considered “formicivores”. On occasion they will eat vegetation for its water content but only the so-called “Aardvark Cucumber” will do – which is a good thing for the Aardvark Cucumber as this odd, underground-fruiting plant depends on aardvarks to spread its seeds.

Aardvark skin is naturally a pale, yellowish-gray hue but their wrinkled hide quickly takes on the tint of the soil in their stomping grounds. You might not want to look like Pigpen from Charlie Brown but such an acquired camouflage may help aardvarks blend into their surroundings and avoid some of Africa’s more fearsome large predators.
 Numbat
The Numbat or Banded Anteater is a day-active marsupial termite-eater that was once relatively common throughout Australia. Some zoologists have speculated Numbats may have an ancestral relationship with the extinct Thylacine or Tasmanian Tiger, as both species feature an unusual pattern of contrasting stripes across their lower back and rump.

The introduction of cats, foxes and dogs led to a sharp reduction in the number of Numbats: by the 1970s less than 1,000 remained. Since then, efforts to reduce the number of foxes in particular have helped the Numbat population bounce back to around 3,000 but it is still listed as an endangered species. One reason zoologists think Numbats were able to hold out in two very small, isolated areas is that both locations feature a large number of downed hollow trees – the better to hide oneself in, methinks.

Numbats have evolved a long, sticky tongue that helps them eat ants and termites but their digging claws are no match for rock-hard termite mounds. They get around this deficiency by digging into the softer soil around the mounds, intercepting termite tunnels (and the termites within).
 Echidna
The Echidna, or Spiny Anteater, is a monotreme – along with its fellow monotreme the Platypus, the Echidna is the only mammal that lays eggs instead of bearing live young. Native to Australia and New Guinea, the name “Echidna” is derived from Greek mythology in which Echidna is described as the “Mother of all Monsters”. Take one look at an Echidna and you’ll be hard-pressed to disagree.

The Echidna has made the leap into pop culture, surprising for a creature that looks like it wouldn’t leap if you shot 10,000 volts through it. “Knuckles the Echidna” first appeared in 1994, in the Sonic the Hedgehog video game series, as a rival for Sonic. Knuckles doesn’t look much like an actual Echidna, however, which was likely intentional and probably for the best.

There are four recognized species of Echidna, with the Short-Beaked Echidna subsisting entirely on ants and termites. Their strategy in case of attack by predators is to curl up into a ball, thus exposing their pointy spines. One trivia note about Echidnas: the male has a four-headed penis. After that, there’s really not much one can say, amiright?
 Pangolin
The Pangolin or Scaly Anteater is an odd-looking creature… come to think of it, are any of the aforementioned anteaters NOT odd-looking? But back to the Pangolin. This scaled mammal can be found from Southeast Asia west to the Atlantic Ocean coast of Africa, split among seven different species.

While not “threatened” in the statistical sense of the term, IUCN has noted a “great decline” in many formerly abundant pangolin populations as a result of strong demand (mainly from China) for pangolin meat used for food and parts used in traditional medicines.

Pangolins can grow up to 40 inches (100cm) long and their front claws are so long they have to walk on their knuckles. They use these claws to tear open ant nests and termite mounds, after which the toothless creatures employ a tongue up to 16 inches (40cm) long and just 1/4 inch (0.5cm) wide to lap up their prime nutritional resource. Pangolin scales are made of keratin – the same substance hair and fingernails are made of – and are razor-sharp at their trailing edges to discourage persistent predators.
