Why is our body paralysed during REM sleep?
In lamest terms:during REM (stage of sleep) sleep dreams takes place. A dream seems real because the brain is issuing commands to the muscles to enact the action which is happening in the dream; from the perspective of those parts of the brain, the dream scenario is happening physically. So, in order to prevent us from acting out our dream in actual, part of the brain paralyzes us ( we are unable to move or talk) called the "cataleptic state" during REM stage of sleep. Otherwise we will be acting our dreams for example: if you were dreaming of strangling your roomate, you would be playing out each and every step in real from the dream. - I hope I made sense.
