Agree. I think punjabi parents don't benefit from the daughter at all. First, they have to keep extra restriction on her, god forbid she even looks at someone. Second, viah layi kharcha more on girl's side than the guy. Third, viah to wadh she belongs to her husband's family - her family loses the extra help. Where, a son would get married and bring a wife into the house (extra help) so she can take care of the parents and the son can provide for them financially. So, it's all selfishness actually, if you think about it! I don't really blame them for securing their futures either. In the western countries, at least when you're older, you have more options avaliable to you, to spend your elderly life (nursing facilities,etc...) where in Punjab that isn't available.
