News Khabran / 1975: Indra Gandhi found guilty of corruption
« on: June 12, 2011, 03:50:25 PM »
Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi has been barred from holding office for six years after she was found guilty of electoral corruption. But Mrs Gandhi rejected calls to resign and announced plans to appeal to the Supreme Court. The verdict was delivered by Mr Justice Sinha at Allahabad High Court. It came almost four years after the case was brought by Raj Narain, the premier's defeated opponent in the 1971 parliamentary election. Mrs Gandhi, who gave evidence in her defence during the trial, was found guilty of dishonest election practices, excessive election expenditure, and of using government machinery and officials for party purposes. The judge rejected more serious charges of bribery against her.

London, UK (KP) – Thousands of Sikhs across the globe marked the 27th anniversary of the storming of Sri Darbar Sahib and 37 Sikh Gurdwaras by the Indian armed forces in June of 1984.  The military assault, dubbed as “Operation Blue Star”, slaughtered thousands of Sikh men women and children and left Sri Akal Takht Sahib in ruins. Commemoration rallies and programs were held across India, including Sri Akal Takht Sahib, Amritsar, as well as in UK, Germany, Australia, Canada, and the United States.

About 25,000 Sikhs gathered in London’s Trafalgar Square to mark an attack on their holiest shrine.  The Sikhs, hailing from UK and various parts of Europe, marched from Hyde Park to Trafalgar Square.  Banners and signs in support of right to self-determination and an independent Sikh Homeland were visible throughout the impressive march.

News Khabran / Ramdev, BJP trying to destabilise Govt: Cong
« on: June 06, 2011, 10:51:28 PM »
New Delhi: Putting up a brave front amid Opposition's criticism of the midnight crackdown at Ramlila Maidan, Congress on Monday launched a no-holds-barred attack on Ramdev and the BJP accusing them of trying to destabilise the government at the Centre.
At a time when there is talk about growing disconnect between the party and the government, the AICC also firmly backed Prime Minister Manmohan Singh with party general secretary Janaradan Dwivedi hailing him as the biggest Sanyasi (saint) in contemporary politics.
Making light of Ramdev and his fast, Dwivedi said, "One who calls himself a saint or monk should ask himself how many saints of the country are behind him. This is humiliation to the real saints of the country."

News Khabran / Tata Motors sees profits triple on Jaguar turnaround
« on: June 06, 2011, 10:46:51 PM »
Tata Motors has reported a tripling of profits in the last year.
The Indian carmaker made total profits after tax for the last 12 months of 92.7bn rupees ($2bn, £1.3bn), up 260% from a year earlier, thanks to a 33% rise in revenues to 1.2tn rupees.
Business at its Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) subsidiary saw a sharp turnaround, with £1.1bn in profits before tax, having hardly broken even in the 2009-10 year.
The firm said it planned to expand exports by its UK subsidiary.'Exciting new products' Exports already drove a 51% jump in revenues at JLR in the last year, with developing markets such as China seeing the fastest growth.
The UK share of its business dropped from 28% to 24% of sales.
The firm will open its first production line for JLR in India on Friday.
The jump in the UK unit's profits - flattered by the falling value of sterling - helped it pay off debts, with net debt falling by almost two-thirds to £233m.

Knowledge / Naxalite The Red Corridor in india
« on: June 06, 2011, 09:45:45 PM »
The word Naxal, Naxalite or Naksalvadi is a generic term used to refer to various militant Communist groups operating in different parts of India under different organizational envelopes. In the eastern states of the mainland India (Bihar, West Bengal and Orissa), they are usually known as, or refer to themselves as Maoists while in southern states like Andhra Pradesh they are known under other titles. They have been declared as a terrorist organization under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act of India (1967).[1][2][3]
The term 'Naxal' derives from the name of the village Naxalbari in the state of West Bengal, India, where the movement had its origin. The Naxals are considered far-leftradical communists, supportive of Maoist political sentiment and ideology. Their origin can be traced to the split in 1967 of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), leading to the formation of the Communist Party of India (Marxist–Leninist). Initially the movement had its centre in West Bengal. In later years, it spread into less developed areas of rural central and eastern India, such as Chhattisgarh, Orissa and Andhra Pradesh through the activities of underground groups like the Communist Party of India (Maoist).[4]
As of 2009, Naxalites were active across approximately 180 districts in ten states of India[5] accounting for about 40% of India's geographical area,[6] They are especially concentrated in an area known as the "Red corridor", where they control 92,000 square kilometers.[6] According to India's intelligence agency, the Research and Analysis Wing, 20,000 armed cadre Naxalites were operating in addition to 50,000 regular cadres[7] and their growing influence prompted Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to declare them to be the most serious internal threat to India's national security.[8]
In February 2009, the Indian Central government announced its plans for broad, co-ordinated operations in all affected states (Chhattisgarh, Orissa, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Jharkhand, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal), to plug all possible escape routes of Naxalites.[9]

News Khabran / Sikhs rally in London over 1984 India temple attack
« on: June 05, 2011, 04:04:20 PM »
About 25,000 Sikhs from across the UK attended a rally in Trafalgar Square to mark an attack on their holiest shrine in India, organisers have said.
Earlier Sikhs marched from Hyde Park to Trafalgar Square to commemorate the 1984 attack on the Golden Temple in Amritsar, Punjab, north India.
Indian armed forces stormed the holiest Sikh shrine 27 years ago to flush out militants from the temple premises.
Sikh leaders called for the right to self-determination at the rally.
The Sikh Federation UK, which organised the event, said people travelled to London in coaches to attend the Freedom Rally at Trafalgar Square.
Delegations also came from Europe for the event.Operation Bluestar Liberal Democrat MP Simon Hughes spoke at the rally alongside leaders and prominent personalities from the Sikh community in the UK, Europe and India.
The 1984 attack on the temple complex - Operation Bluestar - had been personally approved by Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, to flush out militants who wanted an independent homeland of Khalistan.
There has never been agreement on the numbers killed, but Sikhs say thousands were massacred by Indian troops, many of them innocent bystanders.
Mrs Gandhi was assassinated four months later by her Sikh bodyguards. Following her death anti-Sikh rioting erupted in India which left about 3,000 Sikhs dead.
Events are also being held in Vancouver in Canada and in California to mark the 27th anniversary of the attack
