Every parent would like their son/daughter to be highly qualified and get a good job. if you will ask a plumber to build a bridge.. results gona be a disaster ? wouldn't it?
Numbers are pretty high in engineers and doctors , there are good and bad sides as well. Good sides : They get a job and work and can raise their family. Bad Side: Commonwealth games bridge collapsed, some people don't know what they are talking about?. its like we are producing machines not humans.
I agree with you ki jadon kisse nuun force karida kuch karan vaaste they dont do their best and moreover they are not happy. It is not good we should not be doing it but do I have a choice in India?
But I dont think common wealth games bridge collapsed because of skills of the engineers... there are many other factors ... paise hi khaa lainde india vich taan ... banon vaale nuun te neher de pull banon jinne paise aande aa hath vich .. how would they make robust bridge ... but I think corruption is another complete discussion.

Codename veerG...100% agreed...as depicted in film 3 idiots, indian education system is not on the creative side, it is all based on memorization where student doesnt learn anything...mein 7vii tak india ch parriya aa, mein 7vii ch algebra karda sii te america ch aake ohi algebra university di requirement ch aunda...india's education is very tough i must say...eh jehri vaddiyan gharran de munde kurriyan di easily paise lei ke dakhle lein di gall aa then well its india and it happens only in india
I agree with you that Indian education system does not encourage creativity but does the Indian system pay the creative people. Once that changes the school pressure will definitely reduce.
Also - I can tell you that Princeton, Harvard, Yale, Stanford .. all these universities actually admit kids of the trustees even though there are better candidates with better scores and better ECs. I think this happens in every country. I wish My dad studied in Stanford

Parents are pressurizing their kids to be Engineer and doctors now come on , if you don't have a interest and all you do is memorize stuff which has no meaning to you and even if you pass with good grades after that, doesn't really makes sense because thats not what you want ?
Okay I am going to be in the parents shoes and answer this. First off - Studies have shown that asian kids are more likely to look up to their parents for choosing their career than other kids because thats the way we are brought up. Any important decision we want to make we look up to our parents. (I am not finding the TED talk about this but I will post it once I find it).
Secondly the suucess rate is what parents look at when they ask their kids to become engineers or doctors etc. When a parent in India sees that 90% of the engineers, doctors, scientists are successful and 90% of the singers are un-successful what would one expect for parents to encourage their kids to do? They cannot have a failure. In India 1 person feeds a family, it is not about trying and doing stuff. Its about survival.
I know that this shoudl not be promoted, but I think I can see where the parents are coming from.
I also think that once the nation is developed and 1 person has less number of dependents, the pressure will be less and things will change.

After single-handedly provoking a people's revolution, the 72-year-old activist who launched what he calls "India's second freedom struggle," will end his hunger strike any time now.
Mr Hazare said this is a "victory of the people".
It took Anna Hazare almost five days of fasting to accomplish every point of an agenda that seemed preposterously ambitious when the week began. Till India pitched in, expressing its solidarity with rallies around Mr Hazare's cause - to force the government to introduce a new tough law to combat corruption, and to ensure that politicians alone are not entrusted with its conception.
So the government has agreed that a committee will be set up with five representatives of civil society, including Mr Hazare, and five ministers. Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee will be the Chairman; and former Law Minister Shanti Bhushan, who has been picked by Mr Hazare, will be the co-Chairman.
Read more at: http://www.ndtv.com/article/india/anna-hazare-to-end-his-fast-today-97286?cp I seee light at the end of the tunnel, I feel good about this whole thing. A definite positive step.

Welll je kehna hove te I can just say ki Indian Education system is bad. BUT from Indian perspective that is the only system that will work at this time. That education system works for INDIA.
In India for 2750 seats in IIMs there are lakhs and lakhs of people who give the CAT exam with a supposed success rate of about one in two hundred getting thru. So you see the competition!! When parents urge (or literally force) their kids to study, they are trying to make this success rate to at least 10 in 200 for their kid. So I dont blame them. When there is competition there will be some criteria that schools have to rely on to eliminate and parents are just trying so that their kid can be in the creme.
Secondly - Why do Indian parents only want their kids to become engineers or doctors. because India is a developing country and these careers make a lot of money and respect in the society. Unlike developed nations, Developing countries have family who are looking for roti, kapda and makaan thru careers. They dont care if it is fancy or not. Same thing if it was a developed nation, an artist, musician, painter, truck driver everyone makes that comfortable amout of money that is needed for survival. That is not the case in developing countries. They are choosing a career that will help them have comfortable roti, kapda and makaan.
So we have to see what makes the parents, the society do this to the kids and change that rather than just thinking that it is a wrong system. IT DEFINITELY IS WRONG, BUT IT WORKS for India.
RESERVATIONS,CORRUPTION in schools - those are a completely different topic to talk about.

Unfortunately this is very true. Elites really don't have to interact with the government. (not that it is a very pleasant one).
I can so relate to this as I have seen this happening - “All of us learnt to become individual, sovereign republics. We send our children to private schools, get treatment only in private hospitals, have our own security in gated communities, never need to use public transport, even own our own diesel gensets to produce power, and in many parts of the country, arrange our own water supply, either through our own borewells or tankers.”
