Religion, Faith, Spirituality / Q: How did we come into existence?......
« on: October 22, 2012, 11:24:42 AM »
A: Sikhism recognizes God as the creator of this Universe and the entire life. "He established the Earth, the sky and the air, the water of the oceans, fire and food. He created the Moon, the stars and the Sun, night and day and mountains; He blessed the trees with flowers and fruits. He created the demigods, human beings and the seven oceans; He established the
three worlds (life in water, on land and in the air)" (Guru Granth Sahib Ji, 1399). "He created the Sun and the Moon; night and day, they move according to His Will" (Guru Granth Sahib Ji, 580).

Guru Granth Sahib Ji explains what existed before God's creation and how He created everything. "For endless ages, there was only utter darkness. There was no Earth or sky; there was only His Command. There was no day or night, no Moon or Sun; God sat in primal and profound meditative position. There were no sources of speech or food, no air or water. There was no creation or destruction, no birth or death. There were no continents, regions, seven oceans, rivers or flowing water. There were no heavenly realms, Earth or nether regions of the underworld. There was no destruction or time. There was no hell or heaven, no birth or death, no cycle of reincarnation. There was no Brahma, Vishnu or Shiva. No one was seen, except the One Lord. There was no female or male, no social class or caste to be born into; no one experienced pain or pleasure. There were no people of celibacy or charity; no one lived in the forests. There were no saints or seekers of living in peace. There were no yogis, no wandering pilgrims, no religious robes; no one called himself the master. There was no chanting or meditation, no self-discipline, fasting or worship. No one spoke or talked in duality. He Himself created and rejoiced; He Himself valued everything. There was no purification, no self-restraint, no rosary beads. There were no Gopis, no Krishna, no cows or cowherds. There were no tantras, no mantras and no hypocrisy; no one played the flute. There was no karma, no dharma, no buzzing fly of Maya. Social class and birth were not seen with any eyes. There was no emotional attachment, no death inscribed upon the forehead; no one meditated on anything. There was no slander, no seed, no soul and no life. There was no Gorakh and no Maachhindra. There was no spiritual wisdom or meditation, no ancestry or creation, no reckoning of accounts. There were no castes or social classes, no religious robes, no Brahmin or Kh'shaatriya. There were no demi-gods or temples, no cows or Gaayatri prayer. There were no burnt offerings, no ceremonial feasts, no cleansing rituals at sacred shrines of pilgrimage; no one worshipped in adoration. There were no Muslims, there was no Qazi. There was no Shaykh, or pilgrims to Mecca. There was no king and no worldly egotism; no one spoke of himself. There was no love or devotion, no Shiva, no energy or matter. There were no friends or companions, no semen or blood. He Himself has been the banker, and He Himself has been the merchant. There were no Vedas, Korans or Bibles, no Simritees or Shaastras. There was no recitation of the Puraanas, no sunrise or sunset. The Unfathomable Lord Himself was the speaker and the preacher; the unseen Lord Himself saw everything. When He so willed, He created the world. Without any supporting power, He sustained the Universe. He created Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva; He fostered enticement and attachment to Maya. Rare is the person who listens to the word of the Guru's Shabad. He created the creation, and watches over it; His command is over all. He formed the planets, solar systems, nether regions and brought what was hidden to manifestation. No one knows His limits. This understanding comes from the perfect Guru. O Nanak, those who are attuned to the Truth are wonderstruck; singing His glorious praises, they are filled with wonder" (Guru Granth Sahib Ji, 1035).

Unlike many Christian denominations, Sikhism does not believe that the Earth was created 6000 years ago. Sikhism tells us that the Universe and the Earth has been going on for billions of years. God created the entire Universe including the Earth and the entire creation has been evolving since. "Many millions are the fields of creation and galaxies. Many millions are the skies and solar systems. Many millions are divine incarnations. He has unfolded Himself in so many ways. He has expanded His expansion of creation many times. Forever and ever, He is the One, the One Universal Creator. Many millions are created in various forms. From God they emanate, and into God they merge once again. His limits are not known to anyone. O Nanak, God exists by Himself." (Guru Granth Sahib Ji, 276). Sikhism further tells us that this is not the only time God has created the Universe; He has done it many times over and over again.

"The director (God) stages the play, playing many characters (life forms) in different costumes (bodies); but when the play ends (world ends), He takes off the costumes, and then He is one, and only one. How many forms and images appeared and disappeared? Where have they gone? Where did they come from?" (Guru Granth Sahib Ji, 736). "When the Creator projects Himself, He creates many planets, living beings and life forms. When He draws His creation within Himself, all living beings merge in Him" (Benti Chaupai Sahib, Pauree 13). When he creates the creation, he creates the galaxies, stars, planets, living organisms and when he disintegrates His creation, all living creatures merge back in Him.

A: It is often argued that Sikhs do not cut their hair so why do they cut their nails. Sikhs only cut the dead gray part of their nails, not the alive pink/red part. This is similar to combing and removing dead hair while retaining live hair. Just like we do not cut the pink/red part of our nails, why should we cut our perfectly live and healthy hair? If anything dead grey part of nails should be compared to dandruff or dead hair removed while combing.

In addition, hair is not a hindrance to anyone. Because hair can be placed in a bun and kept clean and does perform a number of functions, it is only practical to realize that keeping hair is not hard. On the other hand, having long nails is a hindrance to the body. An individual with long nails cannot functions and do everyday chores comfortably. In order to ensure that one can perform the tasks of everyday life, only the dead part of nails is trimmed.

In addition, whereas the hair grows from a tubular pit (hair follicle), formed by sinking in of the most actively dividing layer of the skin (stratum germinativum) into the lower dermis, the gray part of nails is only modifications of the upper dead layer (stratum corneum). Further, the base of every follicle bulges out forming an inverted cup, which receives blood capillaries for nourishment and nerve fibers to make the hair sensitive. An oil gland, known as sebaceous gland, opens into every hair follicle, the secretion of which lubricates the hair. A muscle is also attached to the base of every hair for bringing about movement. Pigments are added to the shaft of the hair as it grows. None of these features is associated with the dead part of nails.

Structurally, hair is extremely strong, and resists breaking due to its elasticity and flexibility. Strength of hair can be estimated from the following facts, a human hair laid on a bar of steel and then passed through a cold rolling mill would leave an imprint on the face of the steel. A hair of a man’s beard is about as strong as a copper wire of the same dimensions. If a rope were made out of strands of long hair, it would be strong enough to lift an automobile. Dead part of nails, on the other hand, are very brittle and rigid, breaking off easily. Hair are countless (upto 125,000 on head region alone), thereby increasing the surface area. Hair protects us against the harmful Ultra Violet radiations and skin cancer while the dead part of the nails do not seem to provide a similar functionality.

The differences between the two do not end with the structural features. Even the body’s response towards the two is totally different. Our body, throughout life, tries to maintain a particular length of hair. Every individual has a specific length for hair. Once the hair reaches its specific length, it stops growing. If the hair is cut, the body responds by growing it again to the specific length. It clearly indicates the link of the body with the hair all along its length. The body shows no such response to the nails, which grow from birth to death at the same rate, irrespective of whether cut or not. It follows, thus, that cutting of the dead part of nails does not tell on the body at all, whereas, cutting of hair puts extra load on the body. To sum up, if there is anything on the head that can be compared with the dead part of nails, it is either dandruff or dead hair which are removed by combing.

Nature knows best what to retain or discard. Whatever is retained is not without purpose. Hair is a gift from God, not a burden. Guru Gobind Singh Ji, in his infinite wisdom, instructed us to respect hair and refrain from tampering with it. This is the visible token of his affection for us, as well as our faith in him.

Religion, Faith, Spirituality / ABOUT GREEDY NESS..
« on: October 18, 2012, 06:07:56 AM »
His heart is filled of greed, and he does not understand that the Messenger of Death is hovering over his head. Whatever one does in this world will come to face him in the afterlife; what can he do at the very last moment? (Guru Granth Sahib Ji, 1049).

In love with duality and maya, one's mind wanders unfocused. The love of maya has displaces all understanding; making mist
akes, one lives in regret. But if one meets the true Guru, then he obtains the essence of reality; the Name of the Lord comes to dwell in his minds. The one who die in the Shabad and subdue his mind in it, obtains salvation. He erases his sins, and eliminates his anger; he keep the Guru's Shabad clasped tightly to his heart. The one who attunes to the Truth, remain balanced and detached forever. Subduing his egotism, he unites with God (Guru Granth Sahib Ji, 116).

Meditate and listen to the Name of the Lord, and give it to everyone. In this way, the filth of lifetimes of karma shall be removed and egotistical pride shall vanish from your mind. Sexual desire and anger shall not seduce you and greed will depart (Guru Granth Sahib Ji, 135).

Cruelty, material attachment, greed and anger are the four rivers of fire. Nanak says, one is burned by falling into them. One is saved only by holding tight to good deeds (Guru Granth Sahib Ji, 147).

O mind, why have you gone insane? Your life is made worthless with greed. The body, which you believe to be your own, and your beautiful home and spouse, none of these is yours to keep. Realize this and understand it. You have wasted the precious jewel of this human life; you do not know the Way to meet God. You have not loved God, even for a second. Your life has passed away in vain. Says Nanak, one is happy who sings the glorious praises of God. The rest of the world is enticed by maya; they fail to achieve the fearless state (Guru Granth Sahib Ji, 220).

I have seen the world being destroyed by greed and egotism. Only by serving the Guru, God is realized and the true gate of salvation is found (Guru Granth Sahib Ji, 228).

The greedy people serve others instead of the Lord, even though they loudly announce their reading of scriptures. They are burnt to death by their own corruption; they are not at home, on either this shore or the one beyond. Attached to materialistic things, they have forgotten the Father, the Cherisher of the World. Without the Guru, all are unconscious; they are held in bondage by death (Guru Granth Sahib Ji, 30).

Filled with greed, one constantly wanders around; he does not do any good deeds. O Nanak, the Lord abides within the heart of the one who follows the Guru (Guru Granth Sahib Ji, 321).

Engrossed in egotism, the world perishes. Without the Guru, there is utter darkness. Attached to materialistic things, they have forgotten God, the Provider of peace. (Guru Granth Sahib Ji, 34).

Mortal's fickle mind is entangled in a dream. Mortal does not even understand that someday he shall have to depart; he has gone crazy with Maya. Mortal is engrossed in the delight of the flower's color (Maya); he strives only to indulge in corruption. Hearing about greed, he feels happy in his mind, and he runs after it. Wandering and roaming all around, I have endured great pain, but now, I have come to the door of the holy. Granting His Grace, the Supreme Lord Master has blended Nanak with Himself (Guru Granth Sahib Ji, 531).

The waves of greed rise within him and he does not remember God. He does not join the company of the holy, and suffers in terrible pain through countless incarnations (Guru Granth Sahib Ji, 77).

Vaisakhi (also spelled Baisakhi) is the festival which celebrates the founding of the Sikh community known as the Khalsa. It is celebrated on April 14 each year. On Vaisakhi day in 1699, Guru Gobind Singh summoned Sikhs from all over India to the city of Anandpur Sahib. At this gathering, the Guru called upon Sikhs to uphold their faith and preserve the Sikh religion. Guru Gobind Singh then lifted his sword and asked that anyone prepared to give his life for his faith to come forward. There was a big silence, but the Guru went on repeating his demand. One Sikh finally came forward and followed the Guru into a tent. Shortly after, the Guru reappeared alone with his sword covered in blood, and asked for a second volunteer. Another Sikh stepped forward and again the Guru took him into the tent, and re-appeared alone with his sword covered with blood. This was repeated until five Sikhs had offered their heads for the Guru. Finally, the Guru emerged from the tent with all five men dressed piously in blue. Guru Gobind Singh called the five Sikhs the Panj Pyare, the Five Beloved Ones.

The Panj Pyare were then baptized in a unique ceremony called pahul. Guru Gobind Singh prepared amrit (holy water) in a bowl using a short steel sword. Then the Guru's wife, Mata Sundri, added patashas (sugar crystals) into the amrit. After completing prayers, Guru Gobind Singh sprinkled the amrit on each of the Panj Pyare. The Guru then knelt before the five and asked them to baptize him as well. The Guru proclaimed that the Panj Pyare would be the embodiment of the Guru himself: "Where there are Panj Pyare, there am I. When the Five meet, they are the holiest of the holy."

The Panj Pyare were the first members of the new Sikh community called the Khalsa. Guru Gobind Singh gave the Khalsa a unique identity with five distinctive symbols of purity and courage, known today as the Five K's. The Guru gave all Khalsa men the surname of Singh (lion) as a reminder to be courageous. Women took on the surname Kaur (princess) to emphasize dignity. With the distinct Khalsa identity, Guru Gobind Singh gave all Sikhs the opportunity to live lives of courage, sacrifice, and equality. These Sikhs were to dedicate their lives to the service of others and the pursuit of justice.

Religion, Faith, Spirituality / Q: Why was Sikh religion needed?
« on: October 17, 2012, 07:55:59 AM »
A: The advent of Guru Nanak Dev Ji in 1469 came at a time of spiritual, social, and political necessity. India had fallen in a situation of crisis where there was no security of life and property. India was a victim of the following:

1. No one knew who the true God was and how to meet Him.
2. Bathing at holy pilgrimages was believed to wash away on
e’s sins.
3. Ritualism and animal sacrifice was considered a way to please gods, goddesses and deities.
4. Women were treated inferior to men.
5. Low caste people (untouchables) were treated very badly.
6. There was a huge gap between rich and poor.
7. People had a great amount of selfish desires.
8. People in India were continuous victims of invasions by Islamic extremist from Afghanistan.

God sent Guru Nanak Dev Ji to this world in order to deliver His message. Guru Nanak Dev Ji rang the alarm-bell and saved masses from unnecessary ritual and hypocrisies. Guru Nanak Dev Ji challenged the division of men into classes and castes. He raised his voice against the ill treatment of women and gave them equal rights as men. He instructed that all men and women were created equal and hence equally worthy of respect.

Guru Nanak Dev Ji stressed the uniqueness of each individual and wanted everyone to progress through a process of self-discipline. The discipline was three-fold: physical, moral and spiritual. The physical discipline included acts of service and charity, while leading a family life; the moral discipline included righteous and honest living and rising above selfish desires; the spiritual discipline included the belief in only the One Supreme Being (the Almighty God) and the exclusion of demigods, gods and goddesses, in whom they had formerly believed.

Guru Nanak Dev Ji instructed that sins cannot be washed away by just going to pilgrimages or taking a holy bath. Only God can forgive humans of their sins and meditation on God is the only way to receive God’s grace. In addition, God is pleased with love and devotion, not animal sacrifice.

Furthermore, Guru Nanak Dev Ji opposed political tyranny and subjugation. He raised his voice against Islamic King Babar's invasion and the tyrannical deeds perpetrated by his army in India.

After Islamic extremists executed the ninth Guru, the tenth Guru of Sikhs Guru Gobind Singh Ji raised his voice against injustice and brought the concept of spiritualism and warrior in Sikhism. He instructed that a Sikh is spiritual first and then to protect his faith and the faith of other, a Sikh is a warrior. The concept is not to force or oppress anyone and not to bear anyone else’s injustice or oppression either. Guru Gobind Singh Ji fought many battles and ended the tyranny of Islamic invasions in 1707.

God sent the Sikh Gurus and delivered His message through Gurus for a period of nearly 230 years. Sikhs Gurus created a lifestyle which gave rise to Khalsa (a pure Sikh), the ideal man of God. In order to be one with God, we have to purify ourselves and become like Him, Sikhs lifestyle helps one to be like and be one with God..

A: Some Sikhs do not completely follow the teaching for Sikh Gurus. Gurus instructed to use Singh and Kaur as the last name for male and female to eliminate the caste system. Sikhs that use Gill, Sandhu, Sidhu,Saini extra as their last name and treat Singh and Kaur as their middle name are much interested in preserving their caste. A real Sikh will only use Singh or Kaur as his or her last name...
