Ace shooter Gagan Narang has been chosen for the country's highest sporting honour -- Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna -- for 2010-2011.
Narang, who won four gold medals in 2010 Commonwealth Games, was disappointed at missing out of the honour last year. He was chosen ahead of tennis star Somdev Devvarman, fellow shooter Ronjan Sodhi, athlete Krishna Poonia and rower Bajrang Lal Takhar.

Struggling to come to terms with the untimely deth of her husband - Asgar Mohammed, 22-year-old Salma weeps profusely as her dreams of a happy and long married life was snatched away brutally from her.

Salma, who lost her husband in the Opera House blast, is terribly devastated by the news.

27-year-old Asghar, a diamond broker, who got married two months ago, was rushed to Saifee Hospital but declared brought dead.

"We are all in a state of shock. He had said he would return early as it was raining. But that never happened," an emotionally perturbed Faiz Mohammed, his father said.

"Since he was doing well in his work, he had thought of buying a new house. He had some plans for our future," he said.

On the ill-fated evening of July 13, Asgar had come down to have tea with his friends at the Opera House khau gali.

"He had severe injuries on his hands and head. Soon after we heard that he has become a victim of the blast... we were all shaken...we were clueless. We immediately rushed to Saifee Hospital. On reaching there, I got to know he was dead," Faiz Mohammed said with tears welling up in his eyes.

News Khabran / Delhi airport: The future has landed
« on: July 17, 2011, 01:11:21 PM »
Not long ago, a foreign traveller waiting for his luggage at Hyderabad's new Rajiv Gandhi International Airport told a fellow passenger: "I have been travelling to India since the '80s. Why can't the people at the Delhi airport learn a lesson or two from the folks at Hyderabad?" The Indian co-passenger replied: "Come to Delhi in July sir, you will see an airport that will be among the best in the world." The co-passenger was I.

Terminal 3 will cater to domestic as well as international passengersPrabhakara Rao, CEO, Airport Development, at GMR, the company that built the Hyderabad airport, now voted the best among the world's airports handling 5-15 million passengers, and is in the process of completing the swanky new Delhi airport. On July 3, the new Terminal 3 (T3) of the Indira Gandhi International Airport will be unveiled and those who have routinely termed the airport as among the worst in the world will be happy to visit again.
There couldn't be a greater contrast between the old and the new. At 5,02,000 sq m, T3 will be the eighth largest terminal in the world after Dubai International's T3, which is 15,00,000 sq m, Beijing Capital International Airport (9,86,000 sq m), Madrid Bajaras Airport and others. It was completed in a record time of 37 months from the date of the concept being approved by the government - an impressive record considering that Singapore's Changi Airport's T3 took 76 months for completion and Heathrow's new Terminal 5 took 60 months.

Delhi airport was a national priority project, not a GMR project. That is what we kept in mind.
- Prabhakara Rao CEO, Airport Development, GMR[/t]Designed by Mott MacDonald and HOK architects and consultants of the UK, the building used up over 6,00,000 cubic m of concrete, equivalent to 240 Olympic-size swimming pools, and 1.1 million cubic m of earthwork; the embankment filling used for the runway is sufficient to build a 70-km, eight-lane highway. More than 1,00,000 tonnes of rebar - reinforcing steel was used-nearly four times the amount that went into the construction of the Howrah Bridge in Kolkata. And 95,000 sq m of glass wall curtains on the terminal building equal the size of 13 football fields.
If that isn't jaw dropping, consider this: T3 will have more than 75 aerobridges (nine of which will be compatible with the Airbus A380), 20 remote parking bays for passenger embarkation and disembarkation. When it starts operations next month, the terminal will be able to handle 34 million passengers every year, which will take the total airport capacity to 60 million.
As an integrated terminal, T3 will cater to domestic as well as international passengers. All passengers flying regular airlines are expected to use T3 while the old Terminal 1D will cater to passengers flying low-cost airlines such as Spicejet, Indigo and Go Air. There are 168 check-in counters, 97 walkways and 14 baggage reclaim belts, all of which will help reduce waiting time. The baggage handling system is run by Siemens, which operates the same at the new Beijing Airport, where 12,500 bags are scanned every hour.

Religion, Faith, Spirituality / Spiritual Science
« on: July 12, 2011, 02:16:13 PM »
“A broad classification of the sciences into physical, biological, and social corresponds with three levels of organization of matter and energy, and not only levels, but also quite distinct kinds of organization. The three are sharply increasing orders of complexity, and each includes the lower grades. Vital organization is more intricate than physical organization, and is added to and does not replace physical organization, which is also fully involved in vital organization.”

– George Gaylord Simpson: The Meaning of Evolution

The spiritual science is the science of the Soul, the Pure Consciousness, and the common heritage of the entire world. Since the Pure Consciousness is all-pervading and is also the propelling force behind the whole of the existence, the spiritual science is eternally stated to be the science of all sciences. Permeating all possible phenomena of Mother Nature, it, if tuned up, can reveal the hidden mysteries of the universe and even beyond that. Attuned to the same, Vedic Seers, the spiritual-scientists of ancient India, could succeed in unfolding many enigmatic secrets of the cosmos, which are being validated today by the discoveries of modern science. All the researches made by them are recorded in the holy Vedas. India, renowned for its Vedic heritage, has always been enlightening the world with its divine asset of spirituality. The most precious gift granted by this spiritual land, India, is that of the holy texts, the Vedas, which are the complete sciences composed and compiled by great seers of ancient times.

In addition, many ancient things have been excavated that prove, without an iota of suspicion, that ancient science was not less developed than our modern science. In 1937, the records made out of stone were found on the uninviting slopes between Tibet and China. The hunt began in 1937-38 in the mountains of Baian-Kara-Ula, the remote slopes located on the border that divides China and Tibet. This archaeological expedition was led by Chi Pu Tei, a professor of archaeology at Beijing University. During their archaeological survey, the team discovered a number of unique cave burial sites. It then made the most incredible discovery. They found unusual disks referred to as “old stone disks”. These disks were approximately 9 inches in diameter, ¾ inches thick, and were having a perfectly round hole of ¾ inches diameter at the centre. Also, on its face was a fine groove spiralling out from the centre to the rim as in a phonograph record. Each disk was etched with a groove, which upon closer inspection came out to be a continuous line of an unknown writing. In total, 716 such records were discovered, dated to between 10,000 and 12,000 years BC old.

The Russians examined some of the discs in a Moscow laboratory and claimed to have made two important discoveries:-
The discs contained certain traces of metal, particularly cobalt.
When placed on a special turntable they hummed in an unusual rhythm like an electrical charge was passing through them.

The use of such records in that time period is quite amazing, as how can the intellect be so developed in that era? Isn’t it quite contradictory to the Theory of Evolution? The Russian and American scientists could not deny the fact that the discovered records were no less than the gramophone records, and the use of such an advanced technology in that period perplexed them.

Not only this, excavators, even in Japan, could unearth certain statues depicting the space voyages carried out by the then astronauts. The costumes embossed on the statues resemble the space costumes. To their surprise, these statues were found to be 21000 years old. These and many other excavations clearly reveal that ancient science was quite rich and advanced. All these ancient developments were convincingly found to be based on Vedic science, India’s unique heritage in the world.

The Vedic science is the treasure house of all possible disciplines ranging from Astronomy to Physiology; e.g., the study of the earth’s orbit around sun, the facts about galaxies, electronic orbitals in an atom, DNA coiling in the cells of our physiology, etc. are all explained in the Vedic science. Even the present day researches made by the scientists can be easily found recorded in the Vedas; for e.g., earlier scientists were of the view that atom is the smallest and hence indivisible particle, but later on they researched out that it can be divided into electrons, protons, and neutrons, which can be further divided into quarks and anti quarks. However, this fact about the divisibility of an atom along with the detail of its constituents, though in different terminology, has already been depicted in the Vedas.

Even in the field of mathematics, Vedic science helps in computing all sorts of problems and that too in the easiest fashion. Vedic sutras express these techniques of computation. These sutras have two-fold effect. On one side, they make the mind serene, and on another side, they provide the technique for computing the problem. For instance, there is a Vedic sutra:
“nikhilam navatha sharamam dashatha”

This sutra explains how to solve the mathematics problem of the type:

92 * 91

So, as per this sutra, subtract tens digit from nine and ones digit from 10. Following this, the outcome is:-

08 * 09

Which upon multiplication gives the result:-

72

Now subtract 09 from the original multiplicand 92:-

92 – 09 = 83

By combining the two results, we get the final answer as 8372.

This way, following the various Vedic sutras, the computation of even most complex problems becomes so easy. How could Vedic seers unravel so much? In fact, these great scientists experimented to know the truth behind the creation. Their motive was to explore how this creation came into existence and who is the Creator behind this cosmic creation? Moreover, being the experimenters of the inner world, they very well knew that whatever is visualised in the cosmos outside can be equally perceived within.

Banking upon this awareness, they undertook their inner-world as the lab for this celestial research work and Divine Knowledge (Brahm Gyan) as the procedure for experimentation. In the blissful moments of meditative stillness, they beheld the underlying current secretly dancing in the entire gamut of creation. This universal current running through all visible and invisible, form and formless entities is indeed an encoded wave impregnated with all possible secrets of existence. Once attuned to this current, these supra mental personalities decoded it whenever and for whatever it was required, hence enriching the all-round facets of ‘life’ and ‘living’ in the process.

The universe has a voice. All we have to do is listen. The door is open; we just have to walk through that door-advises a dapper looking Waris Ahluwalia. This Amritsar-born, 36-year-old is the creative force behind the much-fetishised, jewellery from the House of Waris. His beautiful, handcrafted jewellery line is being retailed at high-end fashion hubs such as Bergdorf Goodman, Maxfield and Phillips de Pury and at uber luxe stores such as Colette in Paris, Barneys in New York and Liberty in London.

Waris Ahluwalia with The Citizen BandAhluwalia is also the flamboyant entrepreneur behind a pop-up Tea Room launched in New York in October 2010, serving Darjeeling tea and biscuits, besides hosting Playboy parties. "House of Waris personifies my love of history, apparent not just in my jewellery, but also in my Tea Room. Tea eludes class and echoes a romantic part of history. For busy New Yorkers I've created an oasis of pause that tea allows," says the American-Indian teetotaler.

Books on my table: Gates to Buddhist Practice by Chagdud Tulku andPlease Kill Me: The Uncensored Oral History of Punk by Legs McNeil. In 2010, he was inducted as an official member of the Council of Fashion Designers of America and placed on Vanity Fair's Best Dressed List. The same year, British GQ called him the second best dressed man internationally and he was also included in Vogue's 10 Most Impactful people of 2010. As for his style, Waris approaches it the same way he approaches his work, "It's probably because my east meets west style. I like wearing tailored suits, accented with pocket squares, along with pink suede George Esquivel shoes. And well, I'm not afraid to wear denim on denim," laughs Ahluwalia.

As a jewellery designer, he loves gold."Gold is part of who we are," says the designer, who never intended to design jewellery. "I got two rings made for myself with 40 diamonds in each ring. I was at Maxfields in LA and the rings caught the sales staff's attention. And it all started from there," he says. Ahluwalia's jewellery journey started in Rome where he found his first workshop, leading him to India, Bangkok and then somehow to a hand engraver in NY. The designer now travels to India six times a year to collaborate with master craftsmen, "I feel blessed, dealing with the people I work with, whether it's director Spike Lee, the delicate setters in Bangkok, my craftsmen in India or Abdull, my Man Friday in Jaipur," says Ahluwalia.

My hangouts: Places that have great food are always my favourite: Omen, Bar Pitti, St. Ambroeus, Me Kong, Sushi Yasuda, my mother's kitchen. Other favourites include The Chateau and St. Marks Bookstore.A constant fixture on New York's mercurial scene-and-be-seen barometer, he is known for his roles in Wes Anderson's films, fashion week photos captured by Olivier Zahm and appearances in The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, The Darjeeling Limited, I Am Love and Inside Man. "If my life had been a movie reel, the credits and acknowledgements would have rolled endlessly," laughs Ahluwalia.

Style icons: Kris Kristoferson in Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore and David Niven in Around the World in 80 Days.Recently, in February 2011, he launched an affordable diffusion accessory line called, Waris Loves You for yoox.com, a leading virtual store. The multi-faceted designer also released a book, To India with Love, with its proceeds going to the Taj Memorial Public Service Welfare Trust, for aiding victims of Mumbai 2008 attacks.

At the end of it all, he is the proverbial 'accidental icon' who seems to have everything on his plate-a niche in Hollywood, a sparkling design career and a wardrobe to suit. "As a first generation Indian immigrant, I had my fair share of pressures," shares the Punjabi lad, whose mom wanted him to get an MBA at least, though he was committed to arts. "I told my mother, I won't be able to follow the path she had chosen for me. In my 20s, I tried compiling a book, opening a restaurant, producing an album and co-producing a movie, but nothing clicked."

But then, these failures gave Ahluwalia the confidence and acquainted him to New York art scene, "Today, most people think that I have it all. But, I would love to do more books and more of everything. After all, it is in my nature to create. I can't fight it," smiles Ahluwalia.

An international think-tank SIPRI has warned that Pakistan is in danger of losing control of part of its to terrorists.
Releasing a report in the Swedish capital of Stockholm, director of SIPRI Daniel Nord said Pakistan may be close to the danger of losing control of part of its nuclear arsenal to terrorists and added that it was a matter of grave concern.
South Asia, where relations between India and Pakistan seem perpetually tense, is the only place in the world where you have the nuclear arms race, he said.
The report said Pakistan has almost reached parity with India on nuclear weapons and charged that the two nations were expanding their capacity to produce fissile material for military purposes.
It, however, said while India could have 80- 110 nuclear warheads today, up from 60- 80 last year, Pakistan could have increased its count from 70- 90 to 90- 110.
Labelling Pakistan's nuclear programme as almost the fastest in the world, SIPRI said both Islamabad and New Delhi continue to develop new ballistic and cruise missile systems capable of delivering nuclear weapons.
It also said Islamabad was now turning to producing lighter precision warheads for use in restricted spaces.

Anti-corruption activist anna hazare is leading a day-long hunger strike by civil society activists at Delhi's Rajghat on Wednesday to protest against the government's action during a satyagraha staged by yoga guru Baba Ramdev last week.
The fast is being held at Rajghat after police refused permission for Jantar Mantar, where prohibitory orders are in force. Prayer meetings will go on at Rajghat through the day as part of Hazare's satyagraha. A debate on the Lokpal Bill will also be held around 4 pm before the fast winds up at 7.30 pm.
Here's a blow-by-blow account of Hazare's satyagraha as it unfolds:

1.40 pm:
Fast continues at Rajghat.

12.40 pm: "Crackdown on Ramdev's supporters murder of democracy," says Hazare.

12.35 pm: "Our movement for a fair Lokpal Bill will continue. The government wants to stifle our rights," says Hazare.

12.25 pm: "Our movement is against corruption and not for any votebank," says Hazare.

12.20 pm: "The Constitution gives people the right to protest, hold dharnas and sit-ins against injustice. Baba Ramdev didn't do anything against national interest," says Hazare. "The agitation that we began in April against corruption needs to be spread across the country."

12.15 pm: Anna Hazare begins addressing supporters

12.07 pm: Many in crowd prevented from putting up placards and banners of yoga guru Baba Ramdev.

12.03 pm: "Political parties must declare the source of their funds," demands Kejriwal.

11.50 am: "Union Minister Kapil Sibal called us conspirators and accused us of betrayal. Isn't the massive corruption in this country a betrayal of the people?" asks Kejriwal.
11.30 am: Arvind Kejriwal says: "Baba Ramdev's satyagraha on June 4 was non-violent. By ordering a police crackdown, the government has torn the Constitution to shreds."

11.10 am: Songs being sung at Rajghat. Hazare and his suporters are seen clapping.

11 am: Kiran Bedi calls Hazare the "Gandhi of our times". "Anyone who struggles for the country, follows the path of truth and non-violence is a Gandhi," she says.

10.50 am: Kiran Bedi and Swami Agnivesh address supporters.

10.40 am: Hazare chants "Vande Mataram", "Bharat Mata ki Jai" and "Inquilab Zindabad", prompting the crowd to echo him.

10.35 am: Heavy security at Rajghat for Hazare's fast.
10.25 am: A surge of supporters at Rajghat. They are wearing Gandhi caps and waving the Tricolour.
10.12 am: Kiran Bedi, Shanti Bhushan, Swami Agnivesh and Arvind Kejriwal seen with Hazare.

10.05 am: "The government's crackdown on Baba Ramdev was undemocratic. People have the right to hold peaceful demonstrations," says Hazare.
10 am: "The government should not supress any democratic agitation. I am ready to die," says Hazare. Taking inspiration from Mahatma Gandhi, he says: "Mahatma Gandhi would not have led movements if he was afraid of death."

10 am: Hazare begins his fast.

9. 55 am: Hazare pays homage at Mahatma Gandhi's samadhi at Rajghat.

News Khabran / Lack of will and power
« on: June 04, 2011, 12:54:16 AM »
India can never hit a target like Dawood Ibrahim or Hafiz Mohammed Saeed inside Pakistan because it lacks the capabilities. It does not have human and technical intelligence (Humint) to monitor the movements of human targets, its military special forces are too fragmented to be effective and a risk-averse political leadership acts as a stumbling block to any such cross-border operation. It is possible that recent statements made by army chief General V.K. Singh and air force chief Air Chief Marshal P.V. Naik were made out of sheer bravado with no foundation.
Consider what happened the last time such an operation was contemplated. On November 29, 2009, as the Taj Hotel in Mumbai was smouldering from the 26/11 terror attacks, the Cabinet Committee on Security was presented with the option of striking terror training camps in Pakistan.
The Indian Air Force advocated targeting Lashkar-e-Toiba's (let) training camps in Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (PoK) using laser-guided bombs from Mirage 2000s or a commando raid on the let headquarters in Muridke, PoK, using Mi-35 helicopter gunships carrying special forces. The political leadership, however, eschewed a military response. That was the closest India ever came to an Operation Geronimo.
In the early 1980s, the Special Group was raised as the r&aw's equivalent to the cia's Special Activities Division and given a mandate for cross-border operations. The force is believed to have carried out a few classified missions before falling into disuse. However, most 'snatch and grab' operations have been restricted to borders in counter-terrorist operations in J&K and the Northeast.
"Cross-border military-intervention capabilities will have a deterrent value by raising the cost for rogue intelligence agencies like the isi that support terrorist strikes in India," says Brigadier Gurmeet Kanwal (retired), director of the army's think tank, the Centre for Land Warfare Studies. The possibility that such raids could be considered an act of war by Pakistan and thus trigger a conflict has hung heavy on the heads of the political leadership. "Our intelligence services are police-led and have no history of conducting intelligence-based military operations," says former r&aw official, Colonel RSN Singh (retired)
Operation Geronimo was a classic intelligence-driven military operation that involved years of human and technical intelligence gathering. Even so, US President Barack Obama gave it only a "55-45 chance" of finding Osama bin Laden in the compound at Abbottabad. "Trouble is that we lack real-time actionable intelligence on targets and their movement and secure communication and operational datalinks," says former air force chief Air Chief Marshal Fali Homi Major.
Says B. Raman, former additional secretary (r&aw), "The US success was possible by a dramatic improvement in the US Humint capability and by its spectacular covert action capability. We have neither. Our Humint is average. Our covert action capability has been non-existent since 1997 (when it was shut down by Prime Minister I.K. Gujral). We need to revamp both, urgently and visibly."
The US Navy SEALs that executed the Abbottabad operation report to Special Operations Command or socom, a unified multi-dimensional force that conducts global missions. India has over 30,000 special forces scattered among various armed forces and ministries. "We need an Indian socom reporting to the National Security Adviser to ensure a speedy response to a crisis," says Lt. General Prakash Chand Katoch, a former special forces officer. But with no direction on special operations, an Indian socom presently appears to be a remote possibility. n

News Khabran / Can Puttaparthi Survive?
« on: June 04, 2011, 12:49:01 AM »
The banana seller stares at the lone passer-by. "In three days I've sold just three bananas. Last year in Puttaparthi I used to sell two baskets every day. How will I make a living?" asks a despondent Lakshmamma, a vendor outside Prasanthi Nilayam, Sathya Sai Baba's ashram in the town. Puttaparthi is not a ghost town. Not yet. But there are telling signs everywhere. The bustling town in Anantapur district of Andhra Pradesh has all but come to a standstill. The locked gates at the private airport, the empty cavern that was once an active bus stop, the taxi and autorickshaw stand with vehicles but no passengers and the all-pervasive and omnipresent gloom in the town bear a silent testimony to the travails of the residents struggling to come to terms with the loss of their patron saint, Sathya Sai Baba.
The economy and activities of Puttaparthi are largely concentrated around the Sathya Sai Baba ashram. Puttaparthi has a population of less than 7,000, not counting the floating population inside the ashram. The landmarks and institutions that separate Puttaparthi from any other small town in India have all been built by the Sathya Sai Foundation. Institutions such as the Sathya Sai Higher Secondary School, the University of Higher Education, the Academy for Music and the Arts, the Hill View Stadium and the Sathya Sai Superspeciality hospital are the biggest landmarks of Puttaparthi, and all of them have been built with donations received from Sai Baba's devotees-the elite of India and as well as foreigners. With more than 1 lakh visitors every year, Puttaparthi, with schools, superior water connections, electricity and Internet connectivity, was the ideal Indian town.
"The problem with Puttaparthi has always been that it functions around Baba. Even when he was alive when he travelled to live in Whitefield in Bangalore or the Kodaikanal ashram, Puttaparthi would become a ghost town. His devotees would follow him. That was our off-season. Now we have a permanent off-season," says Dhanush, whose family has lived here for over 50 years. A month after Sai Baba's demise, the flood of visitors has reduced to a mere trickle. In the past month, nearly a dozen Internet cafes have shut shop. "There used to be so many foreigners, but they have stopped coming now," says Raju Kanwar, a real estate broker. Most businesses such as Internet cafes, real estate companies, markets, Kerala ayurvedic centres and the quintessential handicraft shops have all been hit by the downslide after Baba's demise. "During season, we earned about Rs 8,000-10,000 every day. We could afford to wait out the lean months. In the last month, we haven't managed to make even Rs 100-200 a day," says Dhanush, who works for a property developer. Property developers who invested in Puttaparthi are now struggling to find buyers. Earth Song, a local real estate company, used to sell houses for Rs 28 lakh and above. In 2010, they sold nearly 30 villas worth Rs 52 lakh each. Today they are struggling to find buyers for smaller villas behind the ashram at Rs 30 lakh. "We are giving massive discounts, but we have acquired land at high prices and have to break even," says Partho, who runs the main office of Earth Song. While the price of land in and around Puttaparthi is approximately a lakh for a cent, it is around Rs 25 lakh around the ashram. "Many made windfall gains. They bought land at rockbottom rates and sold it to developers who built apartments that were sold to devotees," says Dhanush. Nearly 70 per cent of the apartments on the three main streets of Puttaparthi are unoccupied and now, with Baba's death, the fear is that they will remain vacant.

Businessmen sourcing and selling handicrafts have also been hit hard. "My parents came to Puttaparthi from Gujarat more than 35 years ago. They started small and thanks to Baba's blessings, have done well," says Vinod Kumar, whose father started the handicrafts business that Kumar currently runs. "Now there is absolutely no business. We are a family of 12 and the future looks scary." As he waits for the odd customer, he remembers an old story: "Someone once heard Baba predict that after he passed on, Puttaparthi would be inhabited only by dogs and monkeys. At the moment that's my greatest fear."

There are others like carpenter Nandi Krishna who feel Puttaparthi is headed in the same direction as Shirdi and it is likely be become a major destination for pilgrims. "No one knew of Shirdi till Bollywood made films about it. Puttaparthi will flourish again, but that will take a long time. I wonder if we can wait that long," says Krishna.
In stark contrast to the outside world, inhabitants of Prasanthi Nilayam remain unperturbed. Their routine remains largely unchanged. Bhajans at 5 a.m., nagarsankirtans (or circumnavigating the premises as they sing bhajans) at 7 a.m. and serpentine queues for breakfast and lunch mark the activities of the ashram. It's business as usual, with visitors from across the country volunteering their services. "People who come for seva are not the ones who can boost the economy, they are people who need the ashram just as much as the ashram needs them. We need the foreign devotees," says Rakesh Rao, whose restaurant serves an English breakfast, a continental lunch and can even provide a kosher meal for Jews. "Baba has assured us that he is not going anywhere. We can feel his presence here all the time," says a spokesperson of the ashram. But Kumar concludes, "I know Baba is with us, he won't abandon us, but to be able to pay bills we need to sell and that's not possible without visitors who visited only to be in the physical presence of Baba."

A gurudwara in the Australian state of Victoria has been vandalised in what is believed to be a "racial" attack, sparking fears among the minority community which has appealed for greater security for the Sikhs.
Sikhs in Shepparton in northern Victoria have appealed to those who vandalised their gurdwara to leave them alone.
"Why they're doing it we don't know and we think there's a bit of racism - I'm not sure but (there) could be," a local Sikh Kuldeep Singh was quoted as saying by ABC News on Thursday.
Security has been stepped up around the gurdwara after recent vandalism attacks, including eggs being thrown at the building and a car smashing a fence around the structure, the report said.
"If somebody has got a problem it would be good to talk to us but definitely we want peace and we want to send a message of peace around," he said, adding the attacks are hurtful.
Singh said it was difficult to understand as "we've got a very good reputation in the community here". "We are hardworking people, we believe in God," he noted.
In a separate incident, a Sikh boy studying in Class 11 at an outer northern Christian school in Melbourne was forced to shave off his beard, Harkirat Singh of the Sikh Federation of Australia was quoted as saying by ABC radio.
It has sparked an outrage among the Indian community which accused the institute of religious discrimination.
The school principal has apologised "for any harm that he might have felt or any hurt that he might have felt".
Over 100 incidents of attacks on Indians, including racial, have come to light in the last few years in Australia.
Last year, an organisation, National Council of Indian Australians was formed here to secure the rights and interests of the minority community members in the country amid a series of attacks on them.

News Khabran / baba ramdev begins his fast against corruption
« on: June 04, 2011, 12:29:08 AM »
baba ramdev on Saturday morning launched his indefinite fast against corruption and blackmoney in Delhi after the government failed to persuade him to call off his protest.
The yoga guru began the protest along with thousands of his followers at the ramlila maidan as he was joined by Swami Sadhavi Ritambhara and other religious leaders from the Sikh, Jain and Muslim communities.
Before launching the fast, Ramdev held a yoga and bhajan session during which he told the gathering that the protest was intended to save the country from corruption and ensure that the poor get a good life.
"Nothing is impossible, everything is possible and we are not going to be defeated," the saffron-clad Baba seated on on an elevated platform, told the gathering, referring to bringing back of black money stashed in tax havens abroad.
Ramdev arrived at the stage at around 4.50 am on Saturday to a huge round of applause from his followers.
Union ministers Kapil Sibal and Subodh Kant Sahay had held a marathon meeting on Friday with Ramdev to persuade him to not go ahead with his indefinite fast. However, the talks failed to reach any breakthrough with the yoga guru insisting that all his demands be met with completely.
Ramdev alleged there was a conspiracy against him to ensure that he does not go ahead with his protest fast but asserted that it had "failed".
"I will certainly not talk about all issues today, there was a conspiracy but it has failed. What was the conspiracy, I will not say today. When the right time comes, I will say," Ramdev said.
"What will India get from this protest? India will be saved now... People will get an opportunity for the first time that in all government professional colleges one can carry on the studies in his mother tongue," he said.
Sadhvi Ridambhara, who also addressed the gathering, lavished praises on him saying, "If there were more Vallabhai Patels, then there was no need for a sanyasi to sit on satyagraha."
Ramdev was at his humorous best while making his followers understand that the hunger strike will help them in two ways.
"Hamare mote bhai aur moti baheno ke liye yeh satyagraha health benefits laega aur desh ke liye wealth mil jayega. (While this hunger strike will bring health benefits to obese people, it will also help bring wealth to the nation)," he said.
When a follower gave him a Rs 11-lakh cheque, the Baba joked, "Take the photos, this is not black money."
A large number of security personnel, including women from Rapid Action Force, were deployed at the protest site to ensure no untoward incident takes place. A manual frisking is also being carried out at the entrance.
The crowd cheered Ramdev whenever he spoke about bringing back black money, declaring it as a national asset and other issues of corruption. A number of RSS pracharaks in their uniforms were also seen at the site, keenly listening to the discourse.
