News Khabran / Poonam - Punjabi Woman From Brampton murdered
« on: April 16, 2012, 12:09:20 AM »
Ohdo hee pata lagna ki gharwala vi conveniently India chala gaya see..he's probably in on it too...

Story from the Toronto Star.

The woman accused of second-degree murder in the death of her sister-in-law is “distraught and depressed” over the charges, her lawyer says.

Deepak Paradkar said his client, Mandeep Punia, is also “very saddened” and that she had a “good relationship” with Poonam Litt before Litt disappeared three years ago.

“My understanding is it was a good relationship” between the two women, he said after 35-year-old Punia made a brief appearance in a Brampton courtroom Saturday morning.

“There was no animosity, it was a very healthy relationship.”

Punia was charged Friday. Her father, Kulwant Singh Litt — Poonam Litt’s father-in-law — was charged with being an accessory after the fact to murder.

Both remain in custody and he returns to court on Monday, Punia on Tuesday.

The father and daughter, while charged in the same case, have been estranged for about a year, Paradkar said outside court.

“I think there is some fraction in the family — other than that, I can’t really comment,” he said. “There are lots of things behind-the-scenes I can’t get into.”

Punia, ushered into the courtroom by security officers, stood quietly for her court appearance, dressed in a rose-coloured hoodie, her dark hair pulled back in a braid. She leaned forward as she listened to a Punjabi translator, but did not speak.

All of Saturday’s court proceedings were placed under a publication ban.

Poonam Litt went missing in 2009, and her remains were found in February in a wooded area in Caledon.

Poonam Litt’s family and friends made a strong showing at bail court Saturday morning, arriving at least an hour before proceedings began. Six of them, three males and three females, walked across the parking lot and into the Hurontario St. building accompanied by two police officers. They were later joined by others.

One family member said he was there in a show of support for Poonam, but when asked to comment he said “let the other side (talk),” meaning Punia’s family.

Later, when leaving court, he reiterated that they did not wish to speak to reporters.

“We are just upset right now,” he said.

Litt shared a home in Brampton with her husband, Manjinder Litt, their young daughter as well as extended family: his parents, sister and brother-in law, as well as that couple’s two children. She was reportedly pregnant at the time she went missing.

Peel police stressed that Manjinder Litt is not a suspect in his wife’s murder, but did say he is known to police for an unrelated issue. He was in India when his wife disappeared.

When Poonam Litt went missing, police publicly said family members knew more than they were letting on.

In fact, officers are still investigating — and are looking into so many family members that it’s unclear if any of them could act as sureties for Punia, her lawyer said.

Paradkar also said the accused’s family is “holding up well,” all things considered, “but they are a little shocked by the allegations.”

He confirmed that Punia was not living with her father at the time of their arrests.

Kulwant Singh Litt, 63, has been convicted of sex assault and criminal harassment in the past and unrelated to this case.

As for Punia, “she has to make an application to Superior Court for bail,” said Paradkar.

“We’ll definitely do that, but we’re not going to rush to do that; we need to see what the evidence is against her” and if the case is strong, he added.

News Khabran / Brampton Student Dead- Raising Money
« on: April 04, 2012, 05:14:58 PM »
Don't Be Stupid. Don't Drink And Drive..dekh lo ...maa baap de supne khatam ho gaya.

Money needed to send dead man home

Jagbeer Singh Saini. He died in a two-vehicle crash early Sunday morning in the intersection of Bovaird Drive East and Torbram Road.
Friends of the man killed early Sunday morning in a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Bovaird Drive East and Torbram Road are asking for help to raise the $12,000 it will cost to send his body home to his grieving parents in India.
Jagbeer Singh Saini, 27, of Brampton was a passenger in an Audi that collided with an SUV at 2 a.m. Sunday. Saini was ejected from the car and died at the scene.
The driver of the Audi, Prashant Panwar, 25, also of Brampton, was sent to hospital with critical injuries and was under police guard this week. He has been charged with impaired driving and two counts of impaired driving causing bodily harm.
Saini’s parents had used their life savings to send him to Canada to attend college. He studied business at Humber College and had just graduated in December.
“Jagbeer was an excellent student who worked hard and looked forward to a career in business management,” according to Sandra Marchetti, one of his teachers at Humber.
She said Saini was, “an exceptional student, hard-working, and a lovely man” and urged everyone to help raise money to send his body home to his heartbroken parents and the rest of his family in his native Gurdaspur, Punjab, India.
College roommates said Saini did not drink.
Peel police say the southbound Audi driven by Panwar collided with an eastbound SUV, flipping the Audi onto its side.

Religion, Faith, Spirituality / Khalistan
« on: April 01, 2012, 09:19:53 PM »
What does Khalistan mean?

We have had this discussion before but we all get so defensive (myself included) and argumentative.

My parents have told me "khalsa" means pure or truthful. So to me Khalistan means the land of the pure and truthful.

I don't associate Khalistan with an actual another country.

To some it is a state of mind to others it can mean a separate country.

So if there ever was a separate state/country created called Khalistan, what would it mean?

Does it mean ke non-Sikhs nu Punjab shad ke jana pehna? Would they have ohna di avdi government, avde laws?

Je political view wich dekhya jave mere khayal wich Khalistan kaday ni ban sakda, only because it's POLITICAL.

Canada wich vi ek province haiga, Quebec, oh vi avda separate country mangde for French people. Har 5-6 saal baad vote pehndi ki bana deiya jave ke nahi. Hamesha vote nahi hee hundi.

Separate country banauna saukha kam nahi. Tuhade paise di koyee value ni hundi, tuhadi economy nahi haigi. Bahut negative affects ah jande.

Koyee baharli country aahke tuhade te attack vi kar sakdi..overtake vi kar sakde, because you are now a separate country.

Je appa socially vekhiye ta jo Punjab wich hun chal reha, lok bahut josh vich aye hoye ne. Ta kuch vi ho sakda.

But eh josh sirf 1-2 maheene rehnda fer sab same.

Je appa economically long term dekhiye ta bahut negative affects vi ho sakde eda di decision te.

Eh sirf discussion haige about economy, long term affects, NOT ABOUT RELIGION.

Please apne views share karo ki hunda je khalistan banda te ya fer nahi banda.

Warning: Topic sensitive haiga, ek dusre de emotions te attack na karo...just discuss about one state becoming a separate country...

News Khabran / Woman commits Suicide After Acid Attack
« on: March 28, 2012, 10:58:52 PM »

What is the world coming to?

Karachi - Fakhra Younus, 33, former Pakistani prostitute or "dancing girl" has committed suicide, 12 years after a vicious acid attack that left her severely disfigured. She jumped to death from her sixth floor apartment in Rome this weekend.
The Washington Post reports that her suicide comes some months after a documentary titled "Saving Face" which detailed acid attacks on women in Pakistan won an Oscar. The Washington Post reports neighbors said Younus was last seen looking at her face in the mirror and weeping.
Younus was attacked with acid in May 2000. Her former husband Bilal Khar was charged with attempted murder and accused of entering Younus's mother's house and pouring acid on her face while she slept. The attack occurred in the presence of Younus's son who was then five years old. Khar, the son of influential and wealthy Pakistani governor of Punjab Ghulam Mustafa Khar, was granted bail within months of his arrest and was eventually acquitted. But it is widely believed his father's influence and connections helped him escape conviction. The Washington Post reports Khar was also the cousin of Pakistan's foreign minister.
Younus's facial disfigurement was extensive. She was often unable to breathe, and her facial features melted and fused together into a single bulbous tangled mass, with her nose and left ear melting completely, her lips fused, one of her eyes blinded, and her breasts melted. She underwent 39 separate surgical operations to repair the damage without success.
She once lamented her condition, saying "My face is a prison to me", while her son, Naumar, who is now a teenager, was unable to believe the transformation her mother had gone through after the attack. He said: "This is not my mother."
Younus's case was only one of thousands of similar cases in Pakistan until she came to the notice of Pakistani writer and activist Tehmina Durrani, author of "My Feudal Lord," a book severely critical of the status and role of women in Muslim society. The Washington Post reports Durrani wrote about Younus's death: “At the young age of 22 an acid attack left her only marginally alive, her horrific mutilation disfigured her so completely that she was now confronted by open disgust and contempt by everyone who set eyes on her in Pakistan. She also became a liability to her own family for whom she was once a source of income. I have met many acid victims. Never have I seen one as completely disfigured as Fakhra. She had not just become faceless; her body had also melted to the bone. Despite her stark and hopeless condition, the government of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan was not in the least God-fearing. She was provided nothing...but disdain...and trashed.”
According to Daily Mail, Durrani helped Younus move to Italy and she lived in Rome while her surgical treatments continued. The story of her life in the past 12 years ended tragically on March 17 when she took her life. She left a note protesting the silence of the law on her plight and the insensitivity of Pakistani authorities.
Durrani says an Italian professor who counseled Younus, said: “I tried to mend her physical scars but was unable to heal her soul.”
Durrani, according to Daily Mail, was ex-wife of Bilal Khar's father. Huffington Post reports Durrani said Younus had vowed before she died: "When I come back [to Pakistan], I will reopen the case, and I'll fight myself."
After the news of Younus's death, Durrani said that her case shows that the Pakistani government needs to do more to fight cases of violence against women. She said: "I think this whole country should be extremely embarrassed that a foreign country took responsibility for a Pakistani citizen for 13 years because we could give her nothing, not justice, not security."
Her former husband Khar, continues to deny he was involved in the attack in spite of the widespread belief that he is guilty. Khar claimed that another man carried out the attack. He also said Younus killed herself because of her financial problems and not because of her injuries. He insinuated she killed herself because her mentors who took her to Italy failed to fulfil their promises to her. He claimed he had been taking care of her before Durrani intervened and took her to Italy.
