MEANING OF NIHANG-
Nihang is a Persian word meaning crocodile.
Nihangs constitute an order of Sikhs who, abandoning the fear of death, are ever ready for martyrdom and remain unsullied by worldly possessions. A Nihang is one who has nothing and is free from anxiety. The order is said to have been founded by Guru Gobind Singh himself as a fighting body of the Khalsa

TWO DIVISIONS AMONG NIHANGS

1. Nihang of the Buddha Dal with traditional "Dastar Bunga" turban, mostly worn on occasions such as Hola Mohalla.

2.Nihang of Taruna Dal with traditional turban known as "Dastar Bunga".

Most interesting thing i find about them is their language.. this is so interesting..

Like many nomadic communities, the Nihang Singhs have through the centuries developed a distinguishable dialect. This language is historically known as GarrGaj Bole ('The Thundering Language') of the Khalsa.

It combines a mixture of Punjabi, Hindi, Persian and other dialects used in the various regions of Punjab.

Lok Virsa Pehchaan / Rebel Queen: Maharani Jindan Kaur
« on: March 26, 2011, 03:04:10 PM »
Maharani Jindan Kaur`s life much of which was spent raging against the British empire for cheating her out of the Punjab, then a vast country stretching from the Khyber Pass to Kashmir is the subject of a film called Rebel Queen, which premiered at New York`s International Sikh film festival.
Beautifully painted- Maharani Jindan Kaur Ji.
By George Richmond,1863. oil paints, gold frame.

Her revolt began when her husband Ranjit Singh, the last Maharaja of Punjab, died of a stroke in 1839 and the British tried to wrest the kingdom from the heir to the throne, her infant son, Duleep Singh. During her rule as regent, Jindan waged two disastrous wars against the British that led to the annexation of the Punjab. She may have made huge strategic errors due to her military inexperience and young age (she was in her early 20s), but Jindan was a fierce ruler. British historian Peter Bance describes her as a “very gutsy woman”. “She stood her ground against the British . . . she actively took charge of the Punjab.”

Christy Campbell, author of The Maharajah`s Box, a book about the Maharani`s son, Duleep, says Jindan was “one of the most remarkable characters of 19th-century history, let alone Indian or Sikh history.”

The Maharani was described as “a serious obstacle” to British rule in India. They launched a smear campaign to discredit her, painting her as the “Messalina of the Punjab”, a seductress too rebellious to be controlled. She refused to co-operate and the British saw that her influence on Duleep could lead to an uprising among the Punjabi people. They decided to separate mother and son.

Nine-year-old Duleep was taken to England where he converted to Christianity, living the life of a typical English gentleman, with Queen Victoria among his friends. The Maharani Jindan, however, was dragged from the court of Lahore by her hair and thrown into the fortress of Sheikhupura and then Chunar Fort in Uttar Pradesh.

After being imprisoned, she disguised herself as a servant and escaped the fort. She travelled through 1,200 kilometres of forest to reach sanctuary in Nepal, where she wrote a letter boasting to the British that she had escaped by “magic”. She never regained the kingdom for her son. But they were reunited years later, which prompted the Maharajah to convert back to Sikhism, undoing the work of the British to “brainwash” him.

Her story encouraged American entrepreneur Bicky Singh to fund the production of Rebel Queen with around $25,000. Director Michael Singh, a California-based film-maker, says: “There`s great drama and tragedy in her story. She was a heroic figure and was well-documented by the British.

News Khabran / Portrait of Maharaja Ranjit Singh on auction in NYC
« on: March 22, 2011, 09:51:07 PM »
A portrait of Sikh ruler Maharaja Ranjit Singh made by celebrated artist Sobha Singh will go under hammer in the US in March, an official of Singh’s art gallery said on Friday. The painting has been listed for auction at the renowned New York-based auction house Sotheby’s on March 24.

“We received a communication from Anuradha Ghosh-Mazumdar, assistant vice-president of Indian and Southeast Asian Art at Sotheby’s that the painting of Maharaja Ranjit Singh by Sobha Singh will be featured in the auction,” Hriday Paul Singh, general secretary of Sobha Singh Memorial Art Society in Kangra, told IANS.

Paul, who is a grandson of Sobha Singh, said the auction house has listed the painting for $300,000-$400,000.

The oil-on-canvas portrait is 39 by 29 inches in size. The Sobha Singh gallery has its replica, he added.

The gallery, visited by around 25,000 art lovers every year, is located in the picturesque Andretta village near Palampur in Kangra Valley of Himachal Pradesh, some 250 km from Shimla, where Sobha Singh spent 38 years.

According to Sotheby’s catalogue preview, the portrait shows the Maharaja seated on a lion-crested silver throne wearing a richly brocaded coat and a jewelled turban, his sword resting on his lap.

Sobha Singh, whose 110th birth anniversary falls November 29, 2011, achieved acclaim for his strikingly beautiful paintings, particularly after he made in 1969 the portrait of Guru Nanak Dev for the 500th birth anniversary of the first Sikh master.

The artist made Andretta his home, and painted over 50 portraits of freedom fighters, including Bhagat Singh in 1981. The government of India conferred Padma Shri on him in 1983.

“The government should do something to get his work back to the country,” Paul added. Sobha Singh, who died in Chandigarh Aug 22, 1986, at the age of 85, left behind more than 2,000 works of his art.

News Khabran / US and Allies attacked Libiya
« on: March 20, 2011, 12:10:11 AM »

112 Tomahawk missiles at more than 20 coastal targets on key air defense sites across Libya as part of operations to protect the population from the forces of long-time leader Moammar Gadhafi.  U.S. Vice Admiral William Gortney outlined what is being called "Operation Odyssey Dawn" several hours after he said the missiles started hitting more than 20 Libyan sites."The United States military has and will continue to use our unique capabilities to create the conditions from which we and our partners can best enforce the full measure of the U.N. mandate.  Our mission right now is to shape the battle space in such a way that our partners may take the lead in execution," he said.

A U.N. Security Council resolution was approved Thursday in New York allowing outside forces to use all measures necessary to protect civilians in Libya, where eastern rebel-controlled areas have been under attack.Admiral Gortney said one British submarine was used as part of Saturday’s strikes as well as U.S. ships and submarines. He described Libya’s air defense sites as being built with old Soviet technology. He said some countries who were taking part in the military operation had asked to be identified, while others wanted to announce their involvement themselves."Of the coalition, the countries that have asked us to mention their names, of course, the United States, UK, French, Italy and Canada.  The other countries have asked for them, that they want to be able to make the announcement and it is the same for the Arab countries as well," he said.

Several countries have spoken out against the operations including Russia and Venezuela. Venezuela’s President Hugo Chavez said it was irresponsible to create more deaths and more war.  The International Committee of the Red Cross called on all warring parties to spare civilians and respect international humanitarian law. The armed rebellion against Mr. Gadhafi began last month, following people power movements which successfully toppled long-time leaders in Egypt and Tunisia and spurred uprisings across north Africa and the Middle East.

Defense Secretary Robert Gates had been skeptical of getting involved in Libya's civil war, telling Congress earlier this month that taking out Libya's air defenses was tantamount to war. Others have worried that the mission could put the U.S. on a slippery slope to deeper involvement in yet another Muslim country — on top of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

News Khabran / Indian Girl found murdered in Australia
« on: March 15, 2011, 10:09:25 PM »
Unaware of the fate that awaited her, the 24-year-old Indian student who was raped and murdered near Sydney suburbs on Wednesday night had spoken to her parents back home in Vadodara just two days before the incident.

“When I spoke to her over phone Monday last, she seemed very happy about what she was doing. I do not think there is any racism involved in this,” says Sanjay Thakkar, the victim’s uncle. Tosha’s body was found stuffed in a polybag dumped into a water body near Sydney on Friday.

Tosha’s father Sunil and mother Varsha Thakkar were too distraught to speak.
Thakkar was studying accounting at the Sydney College of Business and IT, which collaborates with Southern Cross University, and was a permanent resident of Australia. Friends and family members of Thakkar told the media that they had no idea why she was killed.
The police has arrested 19-year-old Daniel Stani-Reginald in connection with the murder. The accused was questioned by detectives and charged with murder and aggravated sexual assault.
Stani-Reginald, who lived close to Thakkar in Croydon, was arrested at an Ashfield motel over the weekend and appeared via video link in Parramatta Local Court on Sunday, according to the Sydney Morning Herald newspaper. The court refused to grant him bail.

News Khabran / Brides abandoned by NRI Grooms on Rise in Punjab!!
« on: March 12, 2011, 10:50:26 PM »
Today, across India, an estimated 30,000 to 40,000 young women live to regret marriages that have left them alone, miserable and consumed with shame.

According to Balwant Singh Ramoowalia of the the Lok Bhalai party, a small political organisation in Punjab, over 22,000 abandoned brides have registered criminal cases against their NRI (Non-Resident Indian) grooms in Punjab alone.

The South Asian Post and its sister papers were among the first newspapers in Canada to highlight and investigate this social menace five years ago.

A 2007 report by the Punjab University stated that about 25,000 abandoned women in Punjab alone faced an uphill battle against a legal system which provides little hope of justice.

It suggested the Indian government should stamp the marital status of NRIs in their passports and bring in new laws to protect vulnerable women.

With an estimated 30,000 brides being abandoned every year, usually by husbands living overseas, India’s Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs also recommends that families hire private detectives to vet suitors and avoid being conned into giving away dowries, which are officially outlawed but are still common among the wealthy.

The ministry estimates that hundreds of thousands of brides are lied to or misled each year.
While arranged marriages between Indo-Canadians and Indian nationals have a time-honoured and successful history, police in the state of Punjab, from which 75 per cent of B.C.’s Indo-Canadian population originates, say half of these marriages today are frauds.

Jalandhar, where the crackdown has begun is in Punjab’s Doaba region where this phenomenon–some have likened to organized crime – occurs at an alarming rate. Of the nearly 30,000 women deserted by NRI husbands and roughly 15,000 of them belong to the Doaba region.

Jalandhar Passport officer Parneet Singh told reporters that the passports of those grooms were impounded who did not respond to the show-cause notices sent to them within 15 days.

In a concerted effort to stop a social scourge that has left over 30,000 women desperate and looking for their husbands, a government team in the town of Jalandhar, Punjab has begun impounding the passports of the so-called Non-Resident Indian (NRI) runaway bridegrooms.

and example of one successful implementation of these efforts ..

In one case, an NRI man’s passport was impounded even before the show-cause notice was issued because he was set to fly abroad when the complaint against him was received. Complainant Parveen Bhatti, talking to The Indian Express, revealed that her husband Pradeep Singh had deserted her just after her marriage in 2008 and he was about to fly abroad after showing himself as unmarried, but she made a complaint to the passport officer, who acted immediately and impounded Pradeep’s passport just a few hours before the flight on February 22.

Discussions / What is Attitude of Sikhism towards Homosexuality??
« on: March 06, 2011, 09:44:59 PM »
This thing was stuck in my mind for many days, when someone asked me that What does Sikhism think about this new trend of homosexuality?

While i explained him like that this is kind of Gender identity disorder but when i searched about it this thing, this is not considered a disorder anymore.. Well, I dont know What do you guys think about it? but certainly I would like to hear your opinion too.. not just your personal opinion but What do you think about homosexuality on religious basis??

or Does Sikhism condemn homosexuality?? or We have just turned  blind eye to this mater..

First i would like discuss about other Sikh organisations view point over this then would discuss about my point of view too..

Current Situation in India..

In India, Homosexuality was considered as criminal offence till 2009 but now it is bit tolerant. On 2 July 2009, the Delhi High Court court decriminalised homosexual intercourse between consenting adults, throughout India, where Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code was adjudged to violate the fundamental right to life and liberty and the right to equality as guaranteed by the Constitution of India.

A 2002 survey estimated that one-sixth of India's male and female population was homosexual.

Sikhism and Homosexuality-

Ethnicity Online website states that:
Sikhism is a very tolerant religion and seeks to find the truth rather than adhere rigidly
to rules. Homosexuality is not specifically banned in any of the writings of the Gurus, but
they do stress that God has intended people to live as man and wife, or to be celibate, with no
deviation from this design. This ambivalence allows most Sikhs to be very tolerant of
homosexuality and accept a homosexual individual while still regarding the practice as
against God’s design”

The Religion Facts website comments that:
The Sikh sacred text, the Guru Granth Sahib, is the highest authority in Sikhism. It is silent on the subject homosexuality. However, there are parts of the Guru Granth Sahib that have been interpreted to mean that homosexuality is wrong.

There are five vices outlined in the Guru Granth Sahib that are to be avoided by Sikhs. These vices are called the Five Thieves. They are Pride (aHankar), Anger (Krodh), Greed (LobH), Attachment (MoH), and Lust (Khaam). Many Sikhs believe that homosexual thoughts and behaviour are just manifestations of lust, and that it is therefore forbidden.

However, other Sikhs believe that Guru Nanak's emphasis on universal equality and brotherhood is fundamentally in support of gay rights. This view is held by a minority of Sikhs, many of whom have been born/raised in countries that are more tolerant towards homosexuality. Some Sikhs have even gone so far as to describe homosexuals as "the new Untouchables" in reference to Sikhism's rejection of the Indian caste system.

One of Sikhism underlying values is family living. Sikhs are expected to live in a family environment in order to conceive and nurture their children in order to perpetuate God's
creation. Any alternative manner of living is prohibited specifically a celibate lifestyle. Most Sikhs assume this means homosexuality, which cannot result in procreation, is unnatural and against God's will.

Another Sikh website notes that: Homosexuality is not addressed in scripture,Guru Granth Sahibji.

Akal Takht -During his meeting with the visiting Canadian Sikh MPs on 29 March 2005, Giani Joginder Singh Vedanti, the highest Sikh authority stated that homosexuality is "against the Sikh religion and the Sikh code of conduct and totally against the laws of nature." He called on Sikhs to support laws against gay marriage. He also denounced same-sex marriage and urged the Sikh assembly not to allow such ceremonies in a Sikh place of worship. According to him, “the Sikh code of conduct does not allow such marriages”.

News Khabran / Blood donation camp part of marriage celebration!!
« on: March 05, 2011, 11:37:06 PM »
Bathinda, Punjab- At his daughter’s wedding last year when Jaswant Singh decided to organize a blood donation camp to welcome the bridegroom’s “baraat”, people in Kot Shamer village in Bathinda district in Punjab were pleasantly surprised.

On the wedding invitation card Jaswant Singh mentioned that instead of offering “shagun” in money, his guests would donate blood.

As about 45 of his guests lined up to donate blood, the “baraatis” in turn offered roses to blood donors making it a spectacle so unusual for the Punjabi culture of pomp and show.

Following his example in nearby Harrajpura village 27-year-old Harvinder organized a blood donation camp on his wedding in December last year

Jaswant and Harvinder have been part of the blood donation campaign undertaken by the United Welfare Society for the last about five years during which the society volunteers have donated over 60,000 units of blood to various hospitals in the region.

Vijay Bhatt, one of the founder members of the society said in fact the blood donation was a two decade-old custom in Bathinda and in many other towns, including Bhucho Mandi and Raman Mandi. “There’s a virtual competition to donate the maximum blood units on any given occasion.” he said. The society organizes 80-90 blood camps every year.

Some even organize blood donation camps on the death anniversary of family members. That’s what the family of Harish Bhutani, former general secretary of the society, does every year on his death anniversary. “What could be a better tribute to our father?” asks one of his sons.

Bathinda is perhaps the only district in the country where every year, a fair is organized ‘Mela Khoon Daniyan Da’ to honour donors, so that more people are motivated to join the campaign, says Vijay Goel, chairman of Sahara Jan Seva, a voluntary organization.

People here are so enthused with the idea of donating blood, that often the blood bank can’t stock all the units. The remaining is sent to nearby medical colleges in Faridkot and Patiala.

Knowledge / Gift of Life~ Bone Marrow Donation!
« on: February 17, 2011, 10:01:33 PM »
Need for Bone Marrow Donation??

Every year, thousands of adults and children need bone marrow transplants — a procedure which may be their only chance for survival. Although some patients with leukemia or other cancers have a genetically matched family member who can donate, about 70 percent do not. These patients' lives depend on finding an unrelated individual with a compatible tissue type, often within their own ethnic group, who is willing to donate marrow for them.

Myths and Facts About Bone Marrow Donation-

MYTH:
All bone marrow donations involve surgery.

FACT:
The majority of donations do not involve surgery. Today, the patient's doctor most often requests a peripheral blood stem cell (PBSC) donation, which is non-surgical.

The second way of donating is marrow donation, which is a surgical procedure.

In each case, donors typically go home the same day they donate.

MYTH:
Donating is painful and involves a long recovery.

FACT:
There can be uncomfortable but short-lived side effects of donating PBSC. Due to taking a drug called filgrastim for five days leading up to donation, PBSC donors may have headaches, joint or muscle aches, or fatigue. PBSC donors are typically back to their normal routine in one to two days.

Those donating marrow receive general or regional anesthesia, so they feel no pain during donation. Marrow donors can expect to feel some soreness in their lower back for one to two weeks afterward. Most marrow donors are back to their normal activities in two to seven days.

MYTH:
Donating is dangerous and weakens the donor.

FACT:
Though no medical procedure is without risk, there are rarely any long-term side effects. Donors are carefully prescreened  to ensure they are healthy and the procedure is safe for them. We also provide support and information every step of the way.

Because only five percent or less of a donor's marrow is needed to save the patient's life, the donor's immune system stays strong and the cells replace themselves within four to six weeks.

MYTH:
In bone marrow donation, pieces of bone are removed from the donor.

FACT:
No pieces of bone are taken during marrow donation. Only the liquid marrow found inside the pelvic bone is needed to save the patient's life.

Knowledge / Around the World on Two Wheels!!
« on: February 10, 2011, 10:51:45 PM »
From the seat of his bicycle, Avijit Chakraborty has come to embrace a simple, optimistic truth.

"The world is run by the good people," he said. "The bad people are microscopic.

"You can avoid the bad people areas, but you cannot avoid the good people."

Avijit Chakraborty has ridden 49,000 kilometers - 30,447 miles through 46 countries in 15 months. He started his journey on Feb. 3  to California, then through Nevada and Texas until he ultimately reaches his final stop in Argentina.

“It will take another four months to complete,” he said.

As part of the Guinness criteria, the native of Kolkata, India, must stop at local police stations and have his mileage verified. His most recent stop was Oak Creek, where he added a letter from the local police to his growing file, and spent two days resting in the Sikh Temple of Wisconsin on S. Howell Ave.

Sincere and thoughtful, Chakraborty is 38, a sports coach and veteran cyclist who left behind his wife and 8-year-old daughter in an earnest pursuit: to persuade people to reduce pollution in the world.

He has no delusions of changing the world on a single bike ride, no matter how many miles it encompasses. But lecturing to students at hundreds of schools, in his mind, can be a significant start. By convincing even a few children that the world needs to be protected, he expects to lead a positive change.

Pursuing his form of an inoculation, Chakraborty has biked through snow in Scandinavia and brutal heat in Florida.

He is unsupported; carries his tent and all of his gear, along with a well-justified fear of being hit by a car, on his Cannondale touring bike. Per Guinness rules, he has no sponsor, and expects the trip will cost him $10,000.

He thinks about the daunting distance only in small increments.

The standard question, of course, is how he pedals across the oceans. He doesn't. The route detailed by Guinness allows him to travel by plane and ship, and to bypass Antarctica entirely.

Knowledge / Tomatoes: Fruit or Vegetable??
« on: February 10, 2011, 10:30:00 PM »
The confusion if tomato is a fruit or a vegetable, is as old as tomato itself. Although, science has already answered this question, common people still fumble when it comes to deciding, if tomato is a fruit or vegetable.

Botanical Perspective
Botanical science defines fruits, as ripened ovaries of the flowering plants. Thus, fruits are the dissemination of seeds in flowering plants. Going by this definition, tomato is definitely a fruit. But that would also mean that peas, eggplants, pumpkins, capsicum, cucumber etc. are fruits! Seeds are the part of a plant that make a fruit a 'fruit' and vegetable a 'vegetable'. The term 'vegetable' does not exist in botany. Hence according to scientists, all the seed producing flowering plants produce fruits and not vegetables.

Horticultural Perspective
True fruits are perennial and have a hard wood, as opposed to tomato, which is an annual plant and has a soft wood. Thus, horticulture classifies tomato as a vegetable.

Culinary Perspective
If you ask the same question to a cook, he'll tell you that tomato is a vegetable and not a fruit. Culinary science defines fruits as sweet, fleshy foods used in dessert recipes. Tomato does not fit into this definition and hence is a vegetable. Moreover, they are always served as a part of the main course and not as a dessert, this distinguishes tomato from the fruits.

Legal Perspective
In 1893, the United States Supreme Court gave its verdict, declaring tomato as a vegetable. During that time, fruits were not liable to import taxes. Thus, markets were flooded with cheap tomatoes from other countries. This agitated the consortium of local cultivators, who filed a suit in the court. The court's verdict pacified the consortium and made tomato liable for taxes.

Government Perspective
Lot of confusion prevails, regarding tomato's status at the Government level as well. Tomato was awarded the status of 'state fruit' by the State of Tennessee in 2003, while the State of New Jersey is on the verge of declaring tomato as 'state vegetable'. State of Arkansas, went further and declared the 'south Arkansas vine ripe pink tomato' as both the state fruit and vegetable.

Tomato is a great source of Vitamin C with 100 grams (3.5 oz) containing 13mg, serving 22% of daily intake recommendation for adults. Speaking of personal experience, when u get the common cold and u eat two mid-sized tomatos -- instantly it could help u miraculously ...Highly recommended fruit vegetable whatever it is!

Whats ur perspective??

From left, Twitter Vice-President International Katie Stanton and Google employees Ujjwal Singh and Steve Crossan pose for a portrait at Google headquarters in Mountain View , Calif.,

Even before his first day on the job at Google, Ujjwal Singh was trying to figure out how to use his passion for the spoken word and the company's technological prowess to help Egyptians bypass government efforts to muzzle the massive protests there.

Ujjwal Singh, 38, helped start an online service that lets fans share voice messages with the likes of Miley Cyrus and the Jonas Brothers. Google bought the startup Jan. 25, and a Google product team leader trying to figure out a way around Egypt's recent Internet blackout asked Singh for help before he reported to work.
A weekend of brainstorming and programming later, Speak2Tweet was born - a service that lets people call a phone number and leave a message, then posts a link to the message to Twitter.

It allowed Egyptians to communicate even as the regime of President Hosni Mubarak cut Internet and cell phone services for days, trying to squelch furious protests in the streets of Cairo demanding an end to his three decades of authoritarian rule.
By the time Singh started his job Monday, his service was already part of the uprising.

Almost 2,900 spoken tweets had been posted as of Friday afternoon on the Twitter account (at) speak2tweet. Some of the heaviest volume came after access to both Twitter and the Internet was restored in Egypt earlier this week. The alternative method of tweeting has turned into a forum for longer-form expression because the voice recordings aren't confined to Twitter's 140-character limit.

Even so, it provided a vital link between Egypt and the rest of the world, says Cynthia Wong, director of the Center for Democracy & Technology's Project on Global Internet Freedom. As the word of the service spreads, York expects it to attract more voice messages because only about one-fourth of Egypt's population has Internet access.

News Khabran / Girl Addicted to eating Soap!!
« on: February 09, 2011, 10:18:51 PM »
 A bizarre compulsion...

It's the toxic compulsion that doctors claim could kill her.
But this 19-year-old US girl claims she is hopelessly addicted... to eating soap.
A rare medical condition has left Tempestt Henderson, from Florida, eating up to five bars of soap a week - and washing powder too.

'I love the clean feeling it gives me. Eating soap feels so much cleaner than just washing with it.'
After six months of eating soap, unhappy Tempestt decided to be brave and seek medical advice. She was diagnosed with a rare disorder called PICA, which doctors told her is characterised by an appetite for substances that are largely non-nutritive.
Sufferers have been known to compulsively eat metal, coins, chalk, batteries and even toothbrushes. It can often be caused by a mineral deficiency, which explains why pregnant women often crave eating coal when needing iron.
But in Tempestt’s case doctors believed the condition was bought on by stress.
'Things got really stressful for me when my boyfriend, Jason, split up with me and left for college,' she admitted.

News Khabran / Mona Lisa was a Guy??
« on: February 02, 2011, 09:41:09 PM »

ROME — Italian researchers who specialise in resolving art mysteries said Wednesday they have discovered the disputed identity of the model for Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa -- and claimed he was a man.
Silvano Vinceti, chairman of the Italian national committee for cultural heritage, said the Florence-born Renaissance artist's male apprentice and possible lover Salai was the main inspiration for the picture.
However his claim was immediately disputed by experts at the Louvre in Paris, where the painting is on display.
Salai, real name Gian Giacomo Caprotti, an effeminate young artist who worked with da Vinci for 25 years, is thought to have served as a model and muse for several of his paintings. The pair had an "ambiguous" relationship and were probably lovers, Vinceti said.
Comparisons between the facial characteristics of figures from several of da Vinci's works -- such as "St. John the Baptist" and the "Angel Incarnate" -- reveal striking similarities with the Mona Lisa's nose and mouth, he said.
"There are remarkable similarities," Vinceti told reporters.
What is more, Vinceti said da Vinci had left clues to the model's identity in tiny letters L and S which he and his team found painted into the eyes of the Mona Lisa.
"Close examination of a high-quality digital copy of the portrait had revealed an L for Leonardo and an S for Salai," he said.
But Vinceti's claims have been disputed by the Louvre museum.
