News Khabran / Pea Plant growing in US man's lung
« on: August 13, 2010, 08:43:29 PM »
Remember being told when you were a kid that if you swallowed any of the seeds inside an apple, the fruit would start growing in your stomach?

And then learning later that it was all a joke? Well…turns out that might not be so far from impossible

The Boston Herald reports that a pea was discovered sprouting in the windpipe of Ron Sveden, 75-year-old man from Massachusetts. Physicians first thought Sveden was suffering from a cancerous tumor. Tested samples from a biopsy indicated that the spot seen on an X-ray was a plant and not a tumor. The pea plant was removed with surgery by doctors at Cape Cod Hospital.

A month earlier the 75-year old lifelong smoker began feeling fatigue, loss of appetite and was coughing more.  He had been hospitalized for 10 days before a lung biopsy discovered what was causing his symptoms.
Sveden said his health improved once the plant was removed.

"Thankfully it's all over," he said.

"Now I'm just waiting for a call from the Jolly Green Giant," Sveden joked.

Religion, Faith, Spirituality / Yoga in Sikhism
« on: August 11, 2010, 09:27:10 PM »
Many of us who are Sikhs don’t realize the many close ties and things in Sikhi that are in fact Yoga. Many Sikhs think of Yoga in a negative way because they associate it as a other religions practice, or that the writings in the Siri Guru Granth Sahib say that "yoga is bad" when in fact this is a total mis-understanding and most of the time taken out of context.

Our Sikh Guru have always talked about Yoga in Positive way..like Tenth Master says: "Meditating on Him, as the Single aim and thought, even for the fraction of a second, has liberated humans from the noose of death."

We can read plenty of examples in Gurubani where stress on Yoga has been given to reach unto Wahiguru and our utmost potential.A description of six chakras exists in Gurbani. There is also reference in it to the “upside down” lotus. When this “upside down” lotus blooms, God realization takes place (GG, 108[3]). Guru Nanak says that this lotus blooms when all the four kinds of fire — violence, selfishness, anger and greed — are extinguished by remembering God and the sadhak experiences the ecstasy by drinking nectar

Gurubani Linked To Yoga

The disease of your ego shall be eradicated.
By Guru's Grace, practice Raja Yoga, the Yoga of meditation and success. (SGGS p211)

So subdue the five thieves, and hold your consciousness in its place.
This is the basis of the way of Yoga.         (SGGS p1189)

though Yoga is not an inherent or required Sikh religious practice, but it aids in practice of Sikhism.

i hope i am going to practice Kundalini Yoga soon and then will share my experience with u guyz..:)

Religion, Faith, Spirituality / Sukhmani Sahib~ Psalm of peace
« on: August 08, 2010, 07:38:43 PM »

Sukhmani Sahib, the creation of Guru Arjan Dev ji, is most popular and loved by all the Sikhs. Like the five Banies, for many persons, it has also become apart of Nitnem (to be read daily). In the homes and Gurdwaras, by forming several societies after its name, Sukhmani Sahib is being read routinely. It is felt that its regular readings help to alleviate the miseries and sufferings.

The word Sukhmani is rendered into English as “consoler of the mind.” The entire poem has been translated into English more than once under the commonly preferred title, "Jewel of peace", “Psalm of peace” or “Song of peace”, signifying the soothing effect it has on the mind of the reader. Sukh literally means peace or comfort and mani means mind or heart also jewel.

Sukhmani Sahib consist of 24 Ashtapadis and 24 Shaloks. Each Ashtapadis contain 8 stanzas and each stanza contains 10'tukas' (lines). It contains one Rahau, meaning Pause at the end of the first stanza of the first Ashtapadis. It is generally accepted that Waheguru-inspired Sukhmani Sahib was composed during 1601-1604, at Ramsar, Amritsar under a Pipal tree. Guru Arjan Dev Ji composed Sukhmani Sahib at Amrit Vela for the sake of humanity in Kalyug. The sacred prayer spans 35 pages from page 262 to page 296 of the Guru Granth Sahib.

Sukhmani Sahib contains 24,000 shabads as a person reputedly takes 24,000 breaths (swas) day and night in a given day. The Bani is considered a cure for all ailments and is recited to those who are sick and have intractable problems such as cancer and terminal illnesses.

WAHIGURUJI KA KHALSA, WAHIGURUJI KI FATEH..

Knowledge / Sikhs In America
« on: August 06, 2010, 11:19:15 PM »
Sikh religion is not merely a set of beliefs, it is even more importantly a way of life, that of a saint-soldier.

Sikhs must live their faith in addition to simply being visible as different, i.e., they must live their lives in prayer and humble service of the people.

- Total population fo Sikhs Worldwide is 25 million. Among these, 650,000 lives in US.

-Sikhs have been a part of the American populace for more than 130 years. Many Sikhs emigrated to the United States, and began arriving to work on farms in California. They traveled via Hong Kongto Angel Island, California, the western counterpart to Ellis Island in New York.

- Sikhism was the first religion from India to settle in America during 1800s. There are many important figures like Bhagat Singh Thind first Sikh to be recruited in the American military, also Dalip Singh Saund elected in 1956 to be the first Sikh member of the United States House of Representatives, and there are many more who have contributed to the American economy, military and the lifestyle.

- The first Sikh Gurdwara was built in Stockton, California; the Gurdwara was created in 1912 with joint efforts of Sant Baba Vasakha Singh and Baba Jawala Singh. It was in September 1912 when land was purchased on South Granth Street in Stockton for the use of the Gurdwara.

- The largest Sikh community in the United States resides in Yuba City, California. The rest of the Sikh population is spread out in such places as Seattle, Washington, Modesto, California, San Francisco Bay Area, Stockton, California, Richmond Hill, Queens, New York, Kew Gardens, Queens, Flushing, Queens, New York.

-Prior to the 1980s the United States Armed Forces allowed the wearing of beards while in uniform.[5] However, due to a change in regulations the U.S. armed forces stopped allowing for the wearing of beards in uniform, except for those who have been in the military prior to 1986.

-Rattan, now Captain, has graduated at Fort Sam Houston on March 22, 2010 from basic officer training.[13] He and Dr. Kamaljeet Singh Kalsi are the first Sikh officers to have received exemption from the Army in more than 25 years.

But i can see here, new generation is getting away from their culture and even not aware about their mother tongue..
So there is huge responsibility over parents so if u really want Sikhism to survive in future in foreign countries, Kids need education about their religion, culture and Punjabi language. In other words, ,more Khalsa Schools r needed too..and family atmosphere has its effect at its place too..

Religion, Faith, Spirituality / Eminent Sikh Women
« on: July 25, 2010, 09:28:58 PM »

Sikh women showed strength of character and deep commitment to the values which they helped to establish and instill in their faith and families.Sikh women played vital roles in shaping important events which occurred in Sikh history. The wives, mothers, daughters, and sisters of the Sikh gurus, were instrumental in bringing about many of Sikhism's time honored traditions.
As Khalsa Women, We should be so proud that in Sikhism, women are considered to have the same souls as men and an equal right to grow spiritually. They are allowed to lead religious congregations, take part in the Akhand Path, perform Kirtan , work as a Granthi, and participate in all religious, cultural, social, and secular activities.

Here i wud like to add one quote by Professor Puran Singh""The whole Guru Granth is the voice of a wedded woman or a maiden pining in love of the Beautiful. Her nobleness in Guru Granth is infinite, her freedom is of the highest. Both man and woman as sexes are forgotten in her voice. She becomes the supreme reality and a freed soul."

Therefore, This post is dedicated to All Sikh women who have played significant role for Khalsa or Sikhism..Among them some were unassuming and quietly supportive, others courageously outspoken and fierce in battle.

I will start this thread soon and wud like to read other users contribution too..
Here We will discuss Khalsa Women's Roles as Mother, Sister, Wife and Daughter in Law..and much more.
Thanks

News Khabran / Will India-born Gurmeet Sodhi be next Oprah?
« on: July 24, 2010, 01:09:05 AM »

Oprah is one of America’s most popular women and it would be a great opportunity and honor for a woman from the South-Asian community to be able to host a show on her network.

Gurmeet Sodhi based in Long Island, New York is keeping her fingers crossed even as she checks her website obsessively every few hours. In about a week from now, the Indian talk show host could have the privilege of hosting a show on Oprah Winfrey Network’s Your Own Show. The lifestyle-based talk show, which has been sifting through a worldwide submission of 15,000 entries (online and personal casting) for the past three weeks in search of an ideal host, has rated Sodhi among the top contenders.

Sodhi moved to New York from Mhow, Madhya Pradesh, in 1989, after her father landed a job in an electronics company. She was 12 then. After completing her high school from New York, she took up a part time job at a dry cleaners to supplement her parents’ income and pursued correspondence courses in finance before bagging an entry level job with a financial consultancy.

Knowledge / SIKH LIONS IN WORLD WARS
« on: July 23, 2010, 11:51:57 PM »
French woman pinning a flower to honour sikh soldiers arriving in France

"In the last two world wars, 83,005 turban-wearing Sikh soldiers were killed and 109,045 were wounded for the freedom of Britain and the world enduring shell fire, with no other protection but the turban, the symbol of their faith'" General Sir Frank Messervy, KCSI, KBE, CB, DSO. From the forward of Colonel F.T. Birdwood OBE, The Sikh Regiment in the Second World War.

When the First World War broke out in 1914, there were six battalions of the Sikh Regiment forming part of the British Army. They were named as 14th Ferozepur Sikhs, 15th Ludhiana Sikhs, 35th Sikhs, 36th Sikhs, 45th Sikhs and 47th Sikhs. Since Sikh soldiers were known for their bravery, the British employed all their battalions, except the 35th Sikhs, for fighting at such far-away places like Egypt, Palestine, Mesopotamia, Gallipoli and France.

With the outbreak of war in Europe, India, the Crown Jewel of the British Empire, joined the Allies in battle on the 4th of August 1914.Contributing the most volunteers of any of the British imperial holdings that fought in the war, India produced between 900,000 to 1.5 million troops for combat by 1919.  Of these troops, the Sikhs, one of the two loyal 'martial races' of the British Raj, rallied in enormous numbers for the King, Empire, and the defence of Europe.

At the beginning of the war, Sikh military personnel numbered around 35,000 men of the 161,000 troops of the Indian Army, around 22% of the armed forces, yet the Sikhs only made up less than 2% of the total Indian population.  By the end of the war 100,000 Sikh volunteers joined the British Armed forces with a few Sikhs also contributing to the French Air Service and the American Expeditionary Force.

SIKH MONUMENTS IN EUROPE

The "Black Lions," as the Arabs called them in Mesopotamia, of the Punjab sacrificed their lives for the defence of freedom in Europe for an ally that was ruling their own homeland, yet they did it out of honour and loyalty.

I will try to add MORE bravery stories  of these Sikh martyrs who didn't fight for any race, religion but just for the only reason that is  "HUMANITY".

Knowledge / India's Hottest Curry"PHALL"
« on: July 22, 2010, 08:34:21 PM »

The phall has achieved notoriety as the hottest generally available dish from Indian restaurants. For example, the well-known Brick Lane Curry House in New York has a "P'Hall of Fame" on their website and will provide customers who finish the dish with a free drink and a certificate. In the UK, a charity competition was based on competitors eating increasingly hot phalls.

Phaal, which contains ten different chilies and emits so much heat that chefs wear a protective mask while making it, first appeared on Brick Lane’s menu in 2002, but an appearance on the Travel Channel’s sleeper stunt-food hit “Man Vs. Food” in 2008 put it on the map for local stunt diners.

On the show, host Adam Richman took the “Phaal Challenge,” in which diners brave 16 ounces of the ultra-spicy curry in pursuit of a free beer, a certificate of completion and a place in the restaurant’s online Phaal of fame. Richman finished his order, and others soon arrived to replicate that feat.

News Khabran / Indian Doctor's Center rated as Best in Canada
« on: July 19, 2010, 08:06:29 PM »

Amritsar-born physician Birinder Ahluwalia has made it to the very top of his trade, with his BSA Diagnostic Medical Imaging Centre here rated as one of the biggest and best in this country. For his professional and cultural accomplishments, he was chosen among the top 25 immigrant achievers and Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper invited him to accompany him to India last year.

While, most Indian doctors here driving taxis because of non-recognition of their degrees, few have established themselves in their medical profession in Canada.

Like all immigrants, Ahluwalia too began his life at the bottom after reaching Toronto in 1985.Luckily for him, diagnostic imaging was just taking off and the young Indian saw a huge opportunity in this field. "Yes I was a qualified doctor from India, but I started here as a courier boy. But that didn't last long as I made quick moves, becoming assistant to the chief of the RDS Diagnostics as well as training as a diagnostic imaging specialist,'' he recalled.

With Toronto earning the dubious distinction of having more immigrant doctors turned taxi drivers than any city in the world, Ahluwalia is angry about the the plight of his fellow professionals.

Cars / How abt Toyota Rav 4

TOYOTA RAV 4

The third-generation RAV4 has loads of style, and it always looks solid and pleasant on the eye from any position you care to gaze at the vehicle from.  The nose is nicely sculptured and the headlights are wide-eyed and purposeful.  A high waistline gives the RAV4 a robust and muscley look that is accentuated with its wide 17 inch wheels and flared wheel arches.
The Rav4 is a  vehicle that not only looks tough;  it has has the credentials to tackle slippery conditions and plenty of off-roading jaunts.  The electronically controlled AWD system is designed to help prevent the vehicle slipping sideways during steep off-road hill descents.  It provides “feet off” driving down a steep incline.  The latest AWD system was developed by Toyota to provide enhanced control and improved fuel economy.  Toyota Active AWD is a compact system that controls torque distribution between the front and rear axles. It achieves this by using a newly developed electromagnetic coupling in the rear differential housing. The electronically controlled Active AWD system saves engine power and fuel by only driving the front wheels.
