Honestly, I feel we made a big blunder in 1947. If Punjab stayed alone, independant, we would have been very much a superpower of Asia just like we had the largest army of Asia in 1818.

Even now I feel both Punjabs should make agreements and share technology etc... and make the region a visa free zone (with checkings ofcourse).

Kartar Singh was born in Sarabha, a village in district Ludhiana, in 1896.
He was the only son of his parents. He was still very young when his father died. His grandfather brought him up with great care.
After passing the ninth grade, he went to Orissa to live with his uncle. He completed his high school and began college while there.
It was the year 1910-1911, when he had the opportunity to read a lot of books outside the narrow range of school or college text books. This was also the time of nationalist movement. It was this political environment that aroused the feeling of patriotism in him. It was then that he decided that he must travel to America.

He arrived in San Francisco in 1912.
A paper named Gadar was launched. Its first issue was published in November 1913. Kartar Singh was also a member of its editorial board.

In a public meeting held in Stockton in February 1914, Indian freedom flag was unfurled. Oaths for freedom and equality were taken. Kartar Singh was one of the main speakers in this meeting.

In September 1914 Kamagata Maru ship had to return without unloading its human cargo after its passenger suffered indescribable tortures at the hand of the imperialist whites. So Kartar Singh along with Kranti Priya Gupta and an American anarchist named Jack went to Japan. He met Baba Gurdit Singh in Kobe and held consultations with him.

On November 16, 1915 he was hanged. That day too he was happy as always. His weight too increased. He embraced the hanging rope with the words, "Victory to Mother India."

He wrote a popular song which he would sing and it is said that he died singing it:

"Sewa desh di jinddhiye badhi aukhi
gallan karnia dher sukhalliyan ne,
jinha desh sewa 'ch pair paya
ohna lakh museebtan jhalliyan ne."

BATALA: Panic prevails in this Industrial town Batala following a broad daylight gang war between two gangs, during which fire arms were used by both the groups for more than one hour, at thickly populated residential locality, Shukarpura, today.

The eyewitness, present on the spot told about a causality of a member of Buri gang, who died on the spot after a bullet hit his forehead whose body was subsequently removed from the spot by his companions.

Meanwhile, the police team reached at the spot under SP(Rural) Manvinder Singh, DSP(City) Sakatar Singh, after one hour, denied to comment and remained tight lipped on the entire incident.


According to the information available, two gangs namely Buri gang belonging to village Gazinangal and Lala gang belonging to Shukarpura operates in the outskirts of the city and often involved in wars owing to increase their control in other's area.


Even last night, the members of Lala gang attacked at the house of a member of Buri gang and also fired more than one dozen bullets. And today afternoon, after threatening the Lala gang, the members of Buri gang attacked them at Shukarpura, where members of Lala gang were already waiting for them.


During the one hour long firing during which more than 100 bullets were fired by both the groups more than half dozen persons were injured and rushed to various hospitals.

Though, one of the injured identified as Avtar Singh resident of village Dehar, was admitted at local civil hospital but later fled from the hospital under mysterious circumstances. While the rest of three injured persons were identified as Manjinder Singh resident of Ghuman, Bir Singh resident of Harpura and Gajju Majithia resident of Gazinangal.


Ironically, the place where the incident occurred is just 500 meters away from SSP's residence but none of the police officials turned up at the spot making the miscreants to flee from the spot with the injured companions.




When contacted SSP, Batala, Gurdeep Singh, he denied of any causality and told that 5-6 persons were injured in this gang war. He told that the police was investigating the incidents and strict action will be taken against them. When questioned about the lethargic attitude of the police in reaching the spot, he was not able to give any satisfactory reply.

Getting power supply through open access (OA) facility in Punjab has turned costlier for large industrial groups with the Punjab State Electricity Regulatory Commission (PSERC) imposing cross subsidy surcharge of 74.48 paise per unit on OA consumers.
While framing new guidelines for OA Regulations 2011, PSERC, in its latest order posted on its website, has proposed to levy cross subsidy surcharge of 74.48 paise per unit from July 1, in order to prevent financial loss to state owned power utility Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL).
"With the high end consumers migrating to OA without paying any surcharge, the burden on distribution licensee (PSPCL) increases, which ultimately results in increase in tariff of remaining about 70 lakh consumers... If this loss is passed on to the remaining consumers it will result in an unjustified hike in the tariff for these consumers," the order says.
The punjab industry termed the move as "unwarranted" and "anti-industry" and said it would lead to exit of existing industries to other states.
PSPCL had projected a loss to the tune of Rs 1,000 crore in 2011-12, with high end energy consumers buying cheaper power from other states via OA system.
Under the OA system, big industrial units can buy power from other sources other than state power utility.
Over 200 large industrial groups in Punjab had bought 2,500 million units last year through OA facility which was far more than what industry purchased in Haryana, Rajasthan, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh in 2010-11.
Companies like Nahar Spinning, Steel Strips, Hero Cycles, Nestle India, Lakshmi Energy are OA consumers.
PSPCL had accused that OA consumers treat it as a standby supplier and had said that large industrial houses switched over to open access facility whenever energy was cheaper in other states and then came back to power utility when rates got higher there.
Besides, PSERC has also levied wheeling charges on OA consumers. For OA customers with 66 KV voltage, wheeling charges would be 17.4 paise and for 11 KV, charges would be 34.8 paise per unit.
The new charges came barely two months after PSERC raised power tariff by 8 per cent for the industry for the year 2011-12.
Peeved over the levy of cross subsidy charges, Punjab industry said it would force power intensive industry verticals like steel, textiles and chemicals to migrate to other states.
"Levy of cross subsidy surcharge will kill the industry here... now industry representatives will look for setting up units in other states which are offering incentives like cheap power," Nahar Spinning MD Dinesh Oswal told PTI.
The industry feels levy of surcharge will make OA facility costlier by up to 98 paise per unit which will not be viable option to draw power from other states.
"Power is costliest in Punjab in the country where electricity duty, octroi is also imposed. It will force the industry to shut down their businesses here," Modern Steels Chairman Amarjit Goyal said.
