Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s father once sent Guru Nanak Dev Ji to graze buffaloes in the pastures. While grazing buffaloes, Guru Nanak Dev ji sat under a tree and started meditating on God. Meanwhile, the herd of buffaloes went into the neighboring farmer’s field and destroyed his crop. The farmer saw his crops getting damaged. He became furious and lodged a complaint with Rai Bular, the officer-in-charge of that area. Rai Bular came to inspect the fields, and to his astonishment, he found no damage was done to the crops; rather, the crops were blossoming. The place, at which this miracle took place, is known as Kiara Sahib.

On another occasion, Guru Nanak Dev Ji was sent to graze the buffaloes in the pastures and he fell asleep under the shade of a tree. As the sun rose higher, the shadow moved away. The rays of the hot summer sun began to fall on Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s face. A big cobra came at that place and provided shadow with its hood over the face of the Divine Master. Rai Bular was going through that area with his attendants. When he saw this strange scene, he was convinced that Guru Nanak Dev Ji is not an ordinary person. God had sent him to this world. Rai Bular then touched the Guru's feet in great reverence and thus became his disciple.

Once a king in India went to Guru Nanak Dev Ji and asked, “O Guru! As you told us that God Himself supports His true worshiper, but God has so many apostles, why does He support His devotees Himself? Why does not He send His apostles to help the devotees?” As he said this, his own son who was playing at the bank of a nearby river slipped in the river. The king did not waited for a second and jumped in the river right after his son to save his child.

After saving his child he returned to the Guru. The Guru asked, “My dear friend, you were sitting here with me a minute ago and why did you jump in the river?” King explained that his son had slipped in the river and he went to save him. Then the Guru asked, “Dear friend, you have so many servants then why did you jumped in the river by yourself? Why did not you send you servants to save him?” The King said, “When it come to my son. I do not want to take any chances and would do anything it takes to protect him. I love my son very much and I do not want to lose him at any cost.”

Then Guru Ji said, “My dear friend, God loves His devotees the same way as you love your son. That is why he Himself saves His true worshipper.”

This is a small transcript cum summary of a Katha of Bhai Sant Singh Maskeen of Guru Nanak Dev Ji and their discourse with a Pir. I have shortened few things, but the essence is the same.

The Pir tried to test Guru Nanak Dev Ji's Greatness by asking 3 questions, to which many great men couldn't answer and ran away. Guru Ji agreed, albeit that they be allowed to answer questions in their own way (i.e. by showing/doing 'things')

1st Question: What was there before God?

Guru Ji ordered a plate of diamonds and asked the Pir to count them. "1, 2, 3, ...". Wrong said the Guru, "try again". The Pir did, and Guru Ji stopped him again. He then asked "O Holy Pir, I will count once more, and tell me where I go wrong." As the Pir said 1, Guru Ji held his arm and said "Why begin from 1, count before that." The Pir asked how it is possible, as there is nothing (to be counted) before 1.

"There is/was nothing before God. Just like there is nothing before One, there was nothing before God also. He has always been the Primal Lord."

With little hesitation and less arrogance he asked the 2nd Question: Where does He live?
Guru Ji ordered for milk. After it came, Guru Ji said that something was in the milk. The Pir asked what was in it? The Guru required wheter there was butter (gheo) in the milk or not. The Pir said "Yes". The Guru said "Still we don't see it. Altough it is absorbed in each part of the milk, we don't see it. The same way, God is in every particle of the universe, but isn't visible. Just as you believed there is butter in the milk, once you start believing that God is Here, you will start seeing Him too"

3rd Question: What does God do? Does he do anything or does he remain 'without work' (vehla)

The Guru asked the Pir to come of his throne and let the Guru seat there. The Pir did it. Guru Ji sat on the "throne" and closed his eyes. After a while, when the Guru didn't say anything, the Pir asked again. The Guru opened his eyes and said "Didn't you understand? That is what God does. Gets the Kings off the thrones and makes him sit on the floor and get someone from the floor to sit on the throne. This is what He does."

The laava (singular laav) are the four Shabads (sacred hymns) of the Anand Karaj (Sikh wedding ceremony). They form the central part of the marriage ceremony. The "four rounds" ("char phaara") as they are sometimes called form central part of this auspicious occasion. The four Shabads are from the Guru Granth Sahib, the Sikh holy scriptures and appear on pages 773 to 774 of the total of 1430 page of the holy Granth.

Guru Ram Das, the fourth Sikh Guru tells us on page 788 of the Sri Guru Granth Sahib about the meaning of marriage to a Sikh couple – Effectively, the Guru defines a Sikh marriage in these 2 lines: "They are not said to be husband and wife who merely sit together. Rather they alone are called husband and wife, who have one soul in two bodies." Thus the partnership of marriage is given a special meaning - a new dimension. For a union of marriage to be successful, the two personalities have to merge into one – a spiritual bonding through understanding and love.

The Guru through the four laava give the Sikh couple further spiritual guidance for their life together. The Guru tell the Sikhs of the four golden rules of married life. These rules start very clearly to define the path to be treaded together in this sacred union. The Shabads inform us how the couple as a team have to first begin by following the path of righteousness and sinless-ness. The primary golden rule of "blissful union" is to be truthful and sinless in our conduct first to each other and then to others. The rest of the Laav then tells us how one can be truthful and keep away from falsehood. You can only tread the path of Dharm and righteousness if you remember God through His Name or Naam – Recite His name and you will keep to the straight and narrow and temptation will diminish.

In the second round, the Guru tells us to remove egotism (Humai) from within our minds. Remove the "I" from your mind and concentrate on "we" and "us". Then with fear of the Lord, remember Him and sing His praises. If you do this together, then the sound of God ("anhad shabad") will reverberate within the both of you in resonance. In the third round, the Guru tell us that your minds will be filled with divine love and in the company of the holy congregation Sangat, your destiny will be revealed before you. Finally, as Gurmukhs, the couple will find divine peace and you will have arrived to your final destination, with the Lord; He will dominate your mind and your domain; Naam with flow in your heart; you will have realised your destiny and obtain the ultimate "union of bliss" – absolute Anand; you will "have found the Eternal Lord God".

The Four Rounds

When the Laav is sung, the couple as a pair joint by a piece of cloth circle the SGGS. This has relevance to the occasion and should not be considered a ritual without meaning. When the couple circle the SGGS each time they are making a commitment to God with the Guru and the Sangat as their spiritual witness and support. And as one circles the Sri Guru Granth Sahib you are reminded that the Guru should be the center of your life, from which springs your spiritual leadership and understanding that you require for your soul's long journey across this 'world ocean'. The Sri Guru Granth Sahib is the spiritual center and the Sadh Sangat is your worldly (temporal) witness and support. The Guru is your support within and the Sangat your support outside.
THE FOUR ROUNDS
