Lok Virsa Pehchaan / Pithhoo, Do you know what Pithoo is ?

If you have lived part of your life in Punjab and especially in a village, by this time your childhood memories might have come alive. Yes, it does refreshes the sweet memories of ones childhood which takes you back to the years when you had nothing to worry about and the only thing you liked was to play and enjoy the life.

Pithhoo one of the games which is still a big craze in villages of Punjab.

In the game of Pithhoo, as in most sports/games, there are two teams being made which compete with each other. The number of players in each time can be any where from two and more depending upon the number of kids show up to the village ground. The field size is also not defined it can be any where around 1000 sq ft to 10000 sq feet , Usually in villages no one cares about the size of the field.

There is no special equipment required for this game except a soft rubber ball and few flat disc stones (usually 5 to 6 are enough). The stones are placed on each other, thus making a small tower and kept in the center of the playground. One of the team is given a chance to be a striker and the other is called fielder team. The captain members of both the teams stand facing each other at a distance of 10 to 15 feet, and the ball being placed between them, respective team members make queue and line up behind their respective team captain. The game is ready to start now.

The captain of the striker team tries to hit the stone tower with the ball with a direct hit, If the ball does not hits the stones and is caught by any of the opposite team member after a single bounce, the captain is marked out of the game and have to sit outside the field and wait till his team has finished their turn. This way each member tries of the striker team and if is marked out have to sit outside the field, till all members are out, then the opposite team gets to be the striker team. The interesting part, which is the main fun, happens when the ball hits the stone tower, guess what happens ??.

The stones scatter on the ground and everybody can be seen running around the field. At this time the striker team members try to fix the stone tower back without getting hit by the ball. The job of the fielder team is to hit the ball to as many members of the striker team before the striker team members can buildup the stone tower back up.

You could easily see a lot of co-ordination and teamwork being exercised during this chaos by both teams as both the teams strives hard. This chaos ends if members of striker team are unable to build the stone tower back up and get hit by the ball or they successfully build the tower. If the tower is built back, the striker team can accumulate points or can also call any one member of their team from outside of the field is any one was sent out. Once all the members of the striker team are out, then the opposite team gets a chance to be the striker the game starts again.

Now this exciting game is not seen much in cities and big towns, but still can be seen among the kids in villages of Punjab.

Normally the dancer wears black so is his head covered with black scarf. Sometimes, the murids (followers) also the tie ghungroos (Jingling bells) around their waists like the Bhangra dancers of yore. This dance is fast disappearing.

Lok Virsa Pehchaan / FOLK DRAMA
« on: June 20, 2011, 05:36:20 PM »

In Punjab the birth of folk drama appears to have taken place with the birth of man.

 RAMLILA

Conscience-keeper of tradition Shri Ram Chander has always been the beau ideal of the Indians who suffered great hazards but established and maintained high principles. Two great epics, Maharishi Balmiki's Ramayan and Tulsi Das Ji's Ram Charitra Manas formed the womb out of which folk drama was born. On the basis of these epics Ramlila was designed as a play. Huge stage is setup and adorned artfully. The life of Lord Rama is depicted through authentically dressed character. Sometimes more than one episode is staged concurrently, like Sita's abduction from Ashok Vatika and the war between Sri Ram & Ravana. The characters impart unity to the action by reciting verses in the fashion of a Greek drama.

Burning the effigies of Ravan, Meghnath and Kumbhkaran ends the Ram Lila and Sita Ji is rescued with honor signifying victory of good over evil. Ram Lila is played in all cities of Punjab every year with great gusto.

 PRAHLAD LEELA

Symbol of God-love, Bhagat Prahlad is venerated by the Punjab's on the occasion of Holi festival. Rasdhris (traditional dancers) dramatize the saga of Bhagat Prahlad's life with great respect. It is done through imitation roles and the interest in action is maintained through songs and music. Bhagat Prahlad, inspite of tortures does not move from his faith in God. In the end truth is shown as the victor over evil.

 BABA BALIK NATH LILA

Baba Balik Nath was a super-being blessed with spiritual powers who is venerated in Jalandhar Doab. Saga of his life is delineated on the stage through music, song and dance which in dramatic parlance is called Lila and which highlights saintly values.

 GURU BALMIK LILA

The story of the Guru's life is dramatized in a moving manner. Major events of his life have been versified which are acted through dance, music and song. This Lila is of recent origin and the Rasdharis of Jalandhar Doab are renowned for dramatizing it.

 GURU RAVI DAS LILA

Rasdharis have made a beautiful endeavor to project the spiritual message of Guru Ravi Das's life. The Lila depicts the injustices heaped on him, his eternal faith and God-love and the great honor received by him eventually in a spirit of surrender and is put on show in almost every city of Punjab on the Guru's birthday.

 SWANG

It is a kind of song-drama which is played either in the open or atop of platform. The plot is based on the story of a great personality. In Punjab the Swangs of Puran Nath Jogi, Gopi Nath and Veer Hakikat Rai are very popular. In the first two, the life of detachment and in Kakikat Rai's Swant, the love of religion and spirit of sacrifice for its sake are highlighted and their popularity rests on the fact that they make one conversant with medieval life.

 NAQALS

Naqal is the art of imitation. The Naqal imitate life in a manner that provokes violent laughter. Naqals entertain as they instruct also. Naqals exhibit their art through crisp conservation. The First : Why ! from where have you come ? The Second : Give me food I am starving. Don't you know that I had gone to meet my daughter and we do not eat anything at our daughter's house.

 BHANDS

They are the traditional entertainers of Punjab and entertainment is their whole-time profession. They are either invited or just gatecrash during marriages and produce lot of fun and frolic. Their music and dance are typical and they also evoke jokes through dialogue.
