Religion, Faith, Spirituality / Bawa Wali Qandharn and Guru Ji« on: December 19, 2011, 03:48:57 AM »
After travelling through Arabia and many other countries, the Guru returned to the Punjab. In due course, he reached a place called Hassan Abdal. It is about fifty kilometers from Rawalpindi in Pakistan.
He halted there at the foot of a hill. Soon, people began to gather around him. He talked to them of God. He told them of their duty to him and to his children. More and more people began to gather around him every day. On the top of that hill, there lived a Muslim fakir. His name was Bawa Wali Qandhari. His house was near a spring of fresh water. The water collected there in a small tank. From there it flowed down to the town. It was used by the people for all their needs. The people had no water from any other place. Wali Qandhari was a proud man. He saw people gathering around Guru Nanak. Very few people came to him on the hill now. This made up his mind to punish them. He stopped the spring water from flowing down to the town. The people became very sad. How could they and their cattle live without water! A group of them went to Bawa Wali Qandhari. They begged him to let the water flow down as before. But he said angrily, "Got to him. Ask him to give you water." They went to the Guru. They told the whole story to him. He said to them, "Don't lose heart. Trust in God. He will not let you die of thirst. Bawa Wali Qandhari's anger will cool. He will feel pity for you all." The Guru then said to Bhai Mardana, "Go and appeal to Bawa Wali Qandhari in the name of God. Request him to let the water flow down to the town." Bhai Mardana went to Bawa Wali Qandihari shouted angrily, "Go back to him. Ask him to give water to the people there." Bhai Mardana returned to the Guru. He told him the whole story. The Guru told him to go to the fakir once again. "Beg him," he said, "in the name of God to have pity on the people." Bhai Mardan obeyed. But the fakir paid no attention to his appeals. Bhai Mardana returned to the Guru. He told him of his failure. The Guru sent him once again. But again he came back with the same story. The people became very worried. The Guru said to them, "Don't lose heart, good people. God is great and merciful. He can make springs flow where He likes. Let us all pray to Him." They all prayed with them. Then he lifted a stone. At once, a stream of cool, clean water began to flow. It washed the Guru's feet. It then flowed towards the town. The people were filled with joy. At the same time, Bawa Wali Qanhari's spring dried up. He was red with anger. He pushed a large rock towards the Guru. He thought that it would fall on the Guru . It would crush him to death. It came rolling down towards the Guru. He quietly raised his hand. The rock struck it and stopped. A print of the Guru's hand made on the rock. The rock still exists. There is a beautiful gurdwara at that place. It is called Panja Sahib or the Holy Hand Print. Bawa Wali Qundhari's pride was broken. He came down and fell at the Guru's feet. The Guru said to him, "Rise brother fakir. Live as lovers of God should live. Be kind to all." He then explained to him his golden rules of life and religion. Bawa Wali Qandhari agreed to live and act according to those rules. DHAN DHAN SATGURU SRI GURU NANAK DEV JI MAHARAJ, THE KING OF KINGS 649

Religion, Faith, Spirituality / Bhai Laal Singh Dee Dhaal« on: December 19, 2011, 02:58:59 AM »
Once in the darbaar of Guru Gobind Singh jee, a Sikh called Laal Singh came with a shield. He had spent a lot of time constructing this shield which was almost impossible to penetrate. It was not only strong but was also very light. Everyone in the darbaar praised the dhaal (shield) and Guru Sahib too expressed his happiness at the dhaal.
Bhai Laal Singh was a very good Sikh but when so many people praised his dhaal, he developed haume (ego) and declared in the sangat that no bullet can penetrate his shield. He said this very egoistically. As soon as he said this Guru Sahib told him that he would test Laal Singh’s dhaal the next day. Bhai Laal Singh still did not realize his mistake and accepted the challenge saying that no bullet could penetrate his shield. As he came out of the darbaar of Guru Sahib, he realized that he had committed a blunder. He said to himself that Guru Sahib is a known warrior and on top of that he is Satguru. What could stop him from penetrating his shield? He greatly regretted his mistake and came to his lodging area greatly depressed. Although, he realized his mistake of challenging the sangat, he still wanted Guru Sahib to keep his honour and not let anyone break his shield. He consulted his friends who were gursikhs as well and asked them what to do. They told him that Guru Sahib could no doubt penetrate his shield. They suggested to him that the only way for him to save his honour was to perform ardaas in front of Guru Sahib. Bhai Laal Singh prepared Trihaaval (Karaah Parshaad) and along with other Gursikhs did ardaas before Satguru to save his honour. After the ardaas, he distributed trihaaval amongst the sangat present there. Bhai Laal Singh did not sleep all night and kept doing paath all night. The next day Bhai Laal Singh arrived in the darbaar of Guru Kalgidhar Paatshaah but he arrived very humbly. After the bhog of kirtan, Guru Sahib asked Bhai Laal Singh to get ready as he was going to test his dhaal. Bhai Laal Singh did not accept the challenge as he had done the previous day but responded very humbly to Guru Sahib. Guru Sahib asked Bhai Aalam Singh to test the dhaal. Bhai Laal Singh stood there with the dhaal, constantly doing naam and paath. Bhai Aalam Singh tried three times but the bullet missed the dhaal and did not hit it. Then Guru Sahib smilingly took over the gun and took aim at the dhaal. Guru Sahib just stood there but did not fire. After few moments he called off his aim and asked Bhai Laal Singh what he had been doing all night. Bhai Laal Singh fell at the lotus feet of Guru Sahib and told him everything. Guru Sahib, blessed Bhai Laal Singh and declared that indeed, no one could penetrate the dhaal as Vaheguru himself and all Gurus were present to protect the dhaal. Guru Sahib told Bhai Laal Singh to never talk in haume again. CONCLUSION 1) So great is our Guru. Guru Sahib himself accepted the defeat by not penetrating the dhaal but protected the honour of his Sikh. Why should we leave such great Guru and get indulged in maaiya? Aseen kurbaan kyoon nahi ho jaande apne Guru uppar? 2) Another thing we learn from this saakhi is that it is a good idea to prepare degh with full maryada and perform ardaas for our difficult kaarajs. Nothing in impossible if we do ardaas with full faith. 3) It is not a good idea to talk egoistically in sangat. If we talk this way, we are bound to get dishonoured. 4) Guru does not consider our shortcomings and weaknesses when we do ardaas. He ignores our shortcomings and accepts ardaas that is done with faith. by Bhai Kulbir Singh 653
Religion, Faith, Spirituality / Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji And Bhai Gopaala Ji« on: December 19, 2011, 02:54:51 AM »
Guru Hargobind Sahib jee’s darbar was going on. Guru Sahib addressed the sangat and asked if anyone could recite shudh paath of Siri Jap jee Sahib. For some time there was a complete silence but then Bhai Gopaala jee got up and with his hands folded did benti that he would attempt to recite shudh paath of Siri Jap jee Sahib.
Guru Sahib made him sit on a place higher than his. Bhai Gopaala jee with great devotion and love started doing the paath of Siri Jap jee Sahib. He did paath with total concentration and by the kirpa of Guru jee, no other thought came to his mind. The whole sangat was sitting with closed eyes, listening to the maha mantra – Siri Jap jee Sahib. He recited sunan waaliyaan pauriyaan, then mannan waaliyaan pauriyaan and when he arrived at “teerath tap daya datt daan”, Guru Sahib decided to give him gur-gaddi for such shudh paath. Bhai Gopaala jee who was doing paath with utmost concentration, had a furnaa (thought) come to his mind, as he reached “Nanak Nadri Nadar Nihaal”. He thought that if Guru Sahib asked him to ask for something, he would ask for one of the 5 horses that Guru Sahib has. Four of those five great horses had been distributed to Bhai Bidhi Chand jee, Painde Khaan, Guru Sahib himself and Bhai Jetha jee. Only one was left to be given and Bhai Gopaala jee wanted that horse. At the bhog of the paath, Guru Sahib gave Bhai Gopaala jee a lot of pyaar and ordered one of his Sikhs to give Bhai Gopaala jee the new horse. Then he mentioned that he was preparing to give him gur-gaddi, if he had not thought of the horse. This saakhi is great and we can learn a lot from it: 1) Anything can be attained with shudh paath, with concentration. So it is a must that we learn santhiya and do shudh paath. Santhiya (teaching gurbani paath) classes are held at Gurdwara Tapoban Sahib for three levels i.e. beginners, intermediate level and advance level. 2) Siri Jap jee Sahib is a mahamantra and just one paath can get one anything one wants. Imagine Mahapurakhs like Sant Attar Singh jee Mastuanewale, who did 175 paaths of Siri Jap jee Sahib a day till he completed 125,000 paaths, at Hazoor Sahib. It is a good idea to add more paath on top of our nitnem. By Bhai Kulbir Singh Ji 654
Religion, Faith, Spirituality / GOD's will« on: December 19, 2011, 02:50:54 AM »
Guru Nanak died in 1539. He did not find either of his two sons fit to become a Guru. Instead he selected one of his followers, Bhai Lehna to carry on his work after him. He named him ANGAD (Myself). Thus Angad became the Second Guru of the Sikhs.
Guru Angad lived at Khadur Sahib in the Punjab, India. There lived a yogi named Shiv Nath in the same village. Yogis were saints who did not marry. They had a great hold on the people. Shiv Nath was very proud. He became jealous of the Guru's fame. So he started making plans to get rid of the Guru by fair means or foul. He was on the look out for a chance to make the Guru feel small. Once it did not rain for a long time. There was a danger of drought. When there is a drought, the crops do not grow and the people die of hunger. So the people were worried. They went to the yogi and requested him to do something about it. The yogi replied in anger, "How can you expect rain, you fools, when you look upon a married man as your Guru? Turn him out of the village and you will surely get rain." The people were carried away by the yogi's words. They went to the Guru and said, "O Guru, the crops are dying for want of ram. If you will kindly leave this village the yogi can save us by bringing rain for us." “Dear friends", replied the Guru, "Rain and sunshine are natural. They are in the hands of God. Still I don’t mind leaving the village if it is in your interest." The next day, the Guru left the village. The people went to the yogi once more to ask for rain. The yogi could do nothing against the law of nature. It did not rain. The people became very angry. They dragged the yogi out of his hut into their fields. It so happened that it rained in every field into which they dragged the yogi. Everyone was therefore keen to drag the yogi into his own Held first. They draped him this way and that, till he died. The villagers were very sorry to have turned the Guru out of the village. They realised their mistake. They went to the Guru and begged his pardon. They brought the Guru back with great respect. The Guru told the people to have faith in the Will of God. He then started a common kitchen in that village with the help of his followers. This was known as the 'Guru Ka Langar.' Anyone could come at any lime and have a free dinner in the Langar. Men, women and children of all castes, creeds, colours and races sat and ate together. Many people cheerfully offered free service in the Langar. Since then, the 'Guru Ka Langar' has continued in all the Sikh Temples (Gurdwaras). At a distance of about three miles from this place there lived a Sikh lady named Bibi Jeevai. She used to bring curdled milk (yogurt) everyday for the Langar. She did this duty very well throughout her life. She always served it with loving care in the Guru's Langar. The Guru was pleased with her service and so were the people. One day, when Bibi Jeevai was getting ready at. Home to take yogurt to the Langar, there came a storm. She thought she would be late if the storm did not stop. She wished the storm would stop at once, so that she could reach the Langar in time. It so happened that the storm stopped as she had wished. She was, Therefore, able to reach the 'Guru Ka Langar in time. However, the Guru would not eat the yogurt she brought on that day. She was shocked. She asked for the reason. "Dear Jeevai." replied the Guru, "I hear that you have tried to interfere with the Will of God. The storm was in the interest of many other living beings. The Sikhs are not supposed to grumble or interfere with God's Will." Bibi Jeevai felt very sorry. The idea of obeying God's Will was clearer to her now. “Why call him blind who is blind by the Will of God? Nanak it is he who will not understand God's Will, who should be called blind." (Guru Angad) "What pleases Him, Nanak, is good. They, who must abide by His Will, have no power of their own; When He gives His order, Men must take the road. Men must act according to God's Will; Nanak, Men come when they are sent by God, And depart when they are called by Him." (Guru Angad) "Many think that they have a support other than yours But for me, O Lord, you are my only hope. It is all bewailing for me; If I ever forget you." (Guru Angad) 655
Religion, Faith, Spirituality / Guru Ji wants us to trust Him with our life« on: December 19, 2011, 02:45:10 AM »
A man named Jack was walking along a steep cliff one day when he accidentally got too close to the edge and fell. On the way down he grabbed a branch, which temporarily stopped his fall. He looked down and to his horror saw that the canyon fell straight down for more than a thousand feet. He couldn't hang onto the branch forever, and there was no way for him to climb up the steep wall of the cliff.
So Jack began yelling for help, hoping that someone passing by would hear him and lower a rope or something. "HELP! HELP! Is anyone up there? "HELP!" He yelled for a long time, but no one heard him. He was about to give up when he heard a voice. "Jack, Jack. Can you hear me?" "Yes, yes! I can hear you. I'm down here!" "I can see you, Jack. Are you all right?" "Yes, but who are you, and where are you? "I am the Lord, Jack. I'm everywhere." "The Lord? You mean, GOD?" "That's Me." "God, please help me! I promise if, you'll get me down from here, I'll stop sinning. I'll be a really good person. I'll serve You for the rest of my life." "Easy on the promises, Jack. Let's get you off from there, then we can talk." "Now, here's what I want you to do. Listen carefully." "I'll do anything, Lord. Just tell me what to do." "Okay. Let go of the branch." "What?" "I said, let go of the branch." Just trust Me. Let go." There was a long silence. Finally Jack yelled, "HELP! HELP! IS ANYONE ELSE UP THERE?" Have you ever felt like Jack? We say that we want to know the will of Guru Ji, but when we find out what it is, we can't handle it. Sounds too scary, too difficult. We decide to look elsewhere. When Satguru Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji Maharaj stands infront of us with his sword in his hand, and says, "Let go of the things that stand between you and Me, and trust Me with your life, give me your head" it sounds pretty scary. But when we let go, we find his hands are the safest place to be in 656
