In the Sikh religion, humility is considered a great virtue. Humility is developed by erasing its opposite, which Sikhs call 'humain', self-centred pride, or ego. It is the ego which stands in the way of God realisation. It can be erased by seva, or service, and complete submission to Waheguru, or God. A Sikh serves God by serving other people. Guru Ram Das was perhaps the most self-effacing of the 10 Sikh gurus. The fourth guru, he built the holy Amrit Sarovar and established the city of Amritsar around the Sarovar. His son, the fifth guru, Arjun Dev, built the magnificent Golden Temple in the Amrit Sarovar. Not much is known about the personal life of Guru Ramdas. However, there is a beautiful story about his sense of humility. Once, Baba Sri Chand, the elder son of Guru Nanak, came to meet Guru Ramdas. Baba Sri Chand was not part of the Sikh mainstream, but being Guru Nanak's son the Sikh gurus who followed the founder, gave him the highest respect. So, even on this occasion Guru Ramdas treated Sri Chand with utmost respect. Baba Sri Chand was much older than Guru Ramdas. Because of his years, he had the privilege to joke at the expense of the younger man. It is said that during the meeting he passed a remark at the long beard of Guru Ramdas, "Why have you grown such a long beard?" Without taking affront at Baba Sri Chand's remark, Guru Ramdas replied, "My Guru had told me to use this long beard to wipe the holy feet of great men like you." And he immediately bowed down and started wiping Babaji's feet with his beard. Baba Sri Chand was taken aback at such display of humility by the reigning guru of the Sikhs. Embarrassed, the Baba chuckled sheepishly and said, "Yes, that is the difference between you and me. You have completely erased your haumain. I have not been able to do so. No wonder, Guru Amardas chose you as his successor to lead the Sikhs. You fully deserved to be the guru." by Ramesh Seth DNA India (Wednesday, February 22, 2006)

The Gurus are here, we have only to know that they are here with us all the time. ((Guru Granth Sahib) Page 982) Gurbani in Sri Guru Granth is the living spirit of the Gurus. When you read or listen to Gurbani, the Guru is talking to you and you are hearing the actual words of the Guru. Gurbani are words of the Guru in written form. The physical body of the Guru, of course, is not there. Anyway, the physical body was not the Guru' the word spoken by the Guru, Gurbani, is our Guru, according to the philosophy of Shabad Guru. That is why we bow to the Guru Granth Sahib. Please remember that whatever the Gurus practiced, it was recorded in words and passed on by them to us as Sri Guru Granth Sahib. Gurus don't have to come down to us. They did not leave us. They are with us. Enjoy "talking" to the Gurus and listening to them through Gurbani.

As far as I know, Guru Amar Das ji used to tie his hair onto a wooden peg a few inches above his head as he sat cross-legged, so that if he fell asleep while doing simran his head would drop but his hair would be pulled and he'd wake up. Baba Nand Singh ji used to sit on a plank across the top of a deep well, so if he fell asleep while doing simran he'd fall and die. Basically because he'd rather be dead than forget God's Name. There's a shabad about 'why did I fall asleep.'. Guru Gobind Singh ji said eat little and sleep little. Practically, I've tried doing things at the extreme i.e. little food, little sleep, I did get alot of blessings, but ended up falling asleep at work and my body got too weak without proper food. The real thing is to be a Khalsa - Sant-Sipahee. Healthy and strong like Baba Deep Singh ji and sharp and alert rather than falling asleep through laziness. The body is a machine, it needs sleep, exercise and food. To me `eat little, sleep little' means don't get so lazy that you sleep through amritvela and forget God's Name. And don't get led by your tongue's desires so much so that you have lost your taste for doing Naam Simran. (sacheh naam kee lagee bhukh). But sleep and eat enough to be healthy.
