English Translation:
DHANAASAREE, FIRST MEHL: I live by Your Name; my mind is in ecstasy, Lord. True is the Name of the True Lord. Glorious are the Praises of the Lord of the Universe. Infinite is the spiritual wisdom imparted by the Guru. The Creator Lord who created, shall also destroy. The call of death is sent out by the Lord’s Command; no one can challenge it. He Himself creates, and watches; His written command is above each and every head. He Himself imparts understanding and awareness. O Nanak, the Lord Master is inaccessible and unfathomable; I live by His True Name. || 1 || No one can compare to You, Lord; all come and go. By Your Command, the account is settled, and doubt is dispelled. The Guru dispels doubt, and makes us speak the Unspoken Speech; the true ones are absorbed into Truth. He Himself creates, and He Himself destroys; I accept the Command of the Commander Lord. True greatness comes from the Guru; You alone are the mind’s companion in the end. O Nanak, there is no other than the Lord and Master; greatness comes from Your Name. || 2 || You are the True Creator Lord, the unknowable Maker. There is only the One Lord and Master, but there are two paths, by which conflict increases. All follow these two paths, by the Hukam of the Lord’s Command; the world is born, only to die. Without the Naam, the Name of the Lord, the mortal has no friend at all; he carries loads of sin on his head. By the Hukam of the Lord’s Command, he comes, but he does not understand this Hukam; the Lord’s Hukam is the Embellisher. O Nanak, through the Shabad, the Word of the Lord and Master, the True Creator Lord is realized. || 3 || Your devotees look beautiful in Your Court, embellished with the Shabad. They chant the Ambrosial Word of His Bani, savoring it with their tongues. Savoring it with their tongues, they thirst for the Naam; they are a sacrifice to the Word of the Guru’s Shabad. Touching the philosopher’s stone, they become the philosopher’s stone, which transforms lead into gold; O Lord, they become pleasing to your mind. They attain the immortal status and eradicate their self-conceit;how rare is that person, who contemplates spiritual wisdom. O Nanak, the devotees look beautiful in the Court of the True Lord; they are dealers in the Truth. || 4 || I am hungry and thirsty for wealth; how will I be able to go to the Lord’s Court? I shall go and ask the True Guru, and meditate on the Naam, the Name of the Lord. I meditate on the True Name, chant the True Name, and as Gurmukh, I realize the True Name. Night and day, I chant the Name of the merciful, immaculate Lord, the Master of the poor. The Primal Lord has ordained the tasks to be done; self-conceit is overcome, and the mind is subdued. O Nanak, the Naam is the sweetest essence; through the Naam, thirst and desire are stilled. || 5 || 2 ||

Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh

Sant Nidhan Singh Ji’s name and life stories are often given to the sangat to show them how a true Sikh of Dhan Guru Nanak Dev Ji Maharaj should conduct themselves. This is the story of how Sant Ji became a sevadaar at Sachkhand Sri Hazur Sahib Ji.

Sant Ji was born in 1882 in the village Nadholaa. After finishing school Sant Ji joined the army where he commanded great respect due to his high spiritual status. From a very young age Sant Ji always strived to find the lotus feet of Dhan Guru Nanak Dev Ji Maharaj and as such constantly kept the name of Akaal Purakh on his lips.

One day as Sant Ji was mediating under a tree in the jungle close to his barracks he saw a bright light followed by a group of Shaheed Singhs dressed all in blue riding their horses while gurbani resounded throughout the jungle. Sant Ji immediately got up and began to follow the Shaheed Singhs. In this way the Shaheed Singhs and Sant Ji eventually reached Sachkhand Sri Hazur Sahib Ji.

Upon reaching Sachkhand Sri Hazur Sahib Ji Sant Nidhan Singh Ji made up his mind to give up his army job so that he could serve Guru Sahib’s sangat. Sant Ji took such good care of the sangat that the other sevadaars became very jealous of him, as all the sangat would talk about the devotion he had towards Dhan Guru Nanak Dev Ji Maharaj.

The sevadaars made up an excuse and collectively told Sant Ji that he could no longer do seva at Sachkhand Sri Hazur Sahib Ji. When Sant Ji heard this his heart began to cry but he accepted their orders and decided to head back to Punjab. As Sant Ji made his way back he stopped somewhere for the night and began to mediate on the name of Akaal Purakh. A few seconds after Sant Ji started doing the heard a horse galloping towards him. When Sant Ji opened his eyes he saw Satguru Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji Maharaj the king of kings and the saint of saints standing in front of him.

Sant Ji with tears in his eyes bowed before Guru Sahib and kissed his holy feet. Guru Sahib with his two hands picked his Sikh up and asked him, ‘Where are you going? Why are you leaving the seva that I had blessed you with?’

Sant Ji humbly told Guru Sahib that he already knew about all the events, which had transpired. Guru Sahib smiled and said, ‘Nidhan Singh you must go back to Sachkhand Sri Hazur Sahib Ji and start the langar seva’. Sant Ji looked at his beloved Guru and said, ‘Guru Ji, I have nothing how can I start this seva?’

Guru Sahib then said, ‘With my pocket and your hands this will be accomplished. Now let us go back to Sachkhand Sri Hazur Sahib Ji.’

Together Guru Ji and Sant Ji went back to Sachkhand Sri Hazur Sahib Ji where Guru Sahib’s bachan was fulfilled.

WAHEGURU JI KA KHALSA WAHEGURU JI KI FATEH

When Bhagat Ravi Das arrived at years of discretion he began to wait on saints. He used to present them with everything he could get from his father's house. His father was displeased at this and gave him a seperate place to live. Though his father was a rich man, he gave nothing to his son.

In due time Bhagat Ravi Das was married and supported himself and his wife by making shoes, and lived very happily. Whenever he saw a holy man he supplied him gratuitously with covering for their feet.

Bhagat Ravi Das was ever immersed in his devotions a circumstance which lef to the abandonment of his trade and the deterioration of his circumstances. He soon presented all the external marks of poverty and hard life, yet his heart was glad and happy in the contemplation of Waheguru. It was during this period of distress that a holy man desired to render him assistance. Bhagat Ravi Das gave him bread to eat and lavished every attention on him.

His visitor in return presented him with a philosopher's stone, explained its qualities and told him to keep it carefully. Bhagat Ravi Das replied that he did not require it, as his property and wealth consisted in the name of Waheguru. When the visitor saw that Bhagat Ravi Das absolutely coveted nothing, he implored him to accept the philosopher's stone.

Bhagat Ravi Das told the visitor that he might leave it in the thatch of his house, by which he meant that the article was not worth acceptance. The visitor obeyed and departed. On that ocassion Bhagat Ravi Das composed the following hymn:

God's name is the great wealth of God's saints;
Day and day it increases and in no way decreases,
Nothing can steal it either by day or by night; its possessor sleeps secure in his home.
O God, what is the need of a stone for someone who possesses this wealth?

After thirteen months the visitor returned and found Bhagat Ravi Das Ji, in the same circumstances as before. He asked what had become of the philosopher's stone. Bhagat Ravi Das Ji said, 'It must be where you put it; I have been afraid to touch it.'

Upon this the visitor took it from the thatch and departed, fully satisfied that Bhagat Ravi Das desired nor required no earthly wealth.

This Shabad is by Bhagat Ravi Daas Ji in Raag Gauree on Ang 346

Gauree Bairaagan:
One Universal Creator God. By The Grace Of The True Guru:
In the Golden Age of Sat Yuga, was Truth; in the Silver Age of Trayta Yuga, charitable feasts; in the Brass Age of Dwaapar Yuga, there was worship.
In those three ages, people held to these three ways. But in the Iron Age of Kali Yuga, the Name of the Lord is your only Support. ||1||
How can I swim across?
No one has explained to me,
so that I might understand how I can escape reincarnation. ||1||Pause||
So many forms of religion have been described; the whole world is practicing them.
What actions will bring emancipation, and total perfection? ||2||
One may distinguish between good and evil actions, and listen to the Vedas and the Puraanas,
but doubt still persists. Skepticism continually dwells in the heart, so who can eradicate egotistical pride? ||3||
Outwardly, he washes with water, but deep within, his heart is tarnished by all sorts of vices.
So how can he become pure? His method of purification is like that of an elephant, covering himself with dust right after his bath! ||4||
With the rising of the sun, the night is brought to its end; the whole world knows this.
It is believed that with the touch of the Philosopher's Stone, copper is immediately transformed into gold. ||5||
When one meets the Supreme Philosopher's Stone, the Guru, if such pre-ordained destiny is written on one's forehead,
then the soul blends with the Supreme Soul, and the stubborn doors are opened wide. ||6||
Through the way of devotion, the intellect is imbued with Truth; doubts, entanglements and vices are cut away.
The mind is restrained, and one attains joy, contemplating the One Lord, who is both with and without qualities. ||7||
I have tried many methods, but by turning it away, the noose of doubt is not turned away.
Love and devotion have not welled up within me, and so Ravi Daas is sad and depressed. ||8||1||

Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh

One day after the morning congregation was over a man brought a large bear into the darbar of Dhan Dhan Satguru Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji Maharaj. The man wanted to give a performance with his bear before Guru Sahib and the sangat and as a consequence asked for permission. On being permitted to do so he began to wrestle with his bear. After a while he used his stick to make the bear do all sorts of tricks.

At the time a Sikh called Bhai Kirtia Ji was doing chaur seva over Dhan Dhan Satguru Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji Maharaj. As the bear did it’s tricks Bhai Kirtia Ji would begin to laugh out loudly. Towards the end of the performance Guru Sahib turned to Bhai Kirtia and asked him, “Bhai Kirtia do you not recognise the bear?” Bhai Kirtia looked confused and said, “Guru Ji it is a bear I have never seen” Guru Sahib smiled and said, “Bhai Kirita it is your father Bhai Gurdas”.

Upon hearing this Bhai Kirita was really surprised and upset. He folded his hands together and humbly said to Guru Sahib, “O Guru of the world, my father always did seva in your holy darbar. He would get up early in the morning and recite his prayers. He also served the ninth King, Dhan Dhan Satguru Sri Guru Tegh Bahahdur Ji Maharaj. Having done such dedicated seva how can this be the reward given to him? If this is his fate what fate awaits someone like me? Please be kind and tell me why my father ended up in this unfortunate position after serving the house of Dhan Guru Nanak Dev Ji Maharaj with such love and devotion.”

Guru Ji said, “It is correct that your father had served Dhan Dhan Satguru Sri Guru Tegh Bahadhur Ji Maharaj devotedly. But on one occasion, while he was distributing karah prasad, a passing Gursikh came into darbar sahib to bow before the king of kings, with a cartload of goods on the move. After paying his respects to Dhan Dhan Satguru Sri Guru Tegh Bahadhur Ji Maharaj and the sangat the Gursikh begged for some prasad but your father refused to give him any. Instead, he reprimanded that Gursikh for making the request again and again and for advancing towards him like a bear. That Gursikh picked up a small piece of prasad which had fallen on the floor and uttered, ‘Waheguru’, and went away asking Akaal Purakh why some Sikhs of Dhan Guru Nanak Dev Ji Maharaj had forgotten the true spirit of Sikhi. According to this Gursikh those fake Sikhs were the real bears. A few days after this incident your father died and on account of the words uttered by that Gursikh was born again as the bear who sits in front of us today.”

On hearing these words of Dhan Dhan Satguru Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji Maharaj the entire congregation felt pity for Bhai Gurdas Ji and collectively they begged Guru Ji to somehow redeem Bhai Gurdas Ji from that sort of life. Guru Sahib smiled at his Sikhs and turned towards the owner of the bear and asked him what price he was willing to sell the bear? The owner of the bear agreed to part with the animal for 200 rupees. Guru Sahib took 200 rupees from his own pocket and paid the owner of the bear.

After this the bear sat at the feet of Dhan Dhan Satguru Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji Maharaj. Guru Sahib then got some karah prasad prepared which was distributed to all the sangat. Guru Sahib fed the bear a bit of prasad. A few seconds after Guru Ji had done this the bear went to sleep for the last time and Bhai Gurdas Ji’s soul was liberated by that King of this world and the next.

There are many morals to learn from this sakhi. Would someone be so kind as to explain what these are?

English Translation:

SORAT’H, FIFTH MEHL: The Restorer of what was taken away, the Liberator from captivity; the Formless Lord, the Destroyer of pain. I do not know about karma and good deeds; I do not know about Dharma and righteous living. I am so greedy, chasing after Maya. I go by the name of God’s devotee; please, save this honor of Yours. || 1 || O Dear Lord, You are the honor of the dishonored. You make the unworthy ones worthy, O my Lord of the Universe; I am a sacrifice to Your almighty creative power. || Pause || Like the child, innocently making thousands of mistakes — his father teaches him, and scolds him so many times, but still, he hugs him close in his embrace. Please forgive my past actions, God, and place me on Your path for the future. || 2 || The Lord, the Inner-knower, the Searcher of hearts, knows all about my state of mind; so who else should I go to and speak to? The Lord, the Lord of the Universe, is not pleased by mere recitation of words; if it is pleasing to His Will, He preserves our honor. I have seen all other shelters, but Yours alone remains for me. || 3 || Becoming kind and compassionate, God the Lord and Master Himself listens to my prayer. He unites me in Union with the Perfect True Guru, and all the cares and anxieties of my mind are dispelled. The Lord, Har, Har, has placed the medicine of the Naam into my mouth; servant Nanak abides in peace. || 4 || 12 || 62 ||
