Setha, Gobinda and Bhaga wrre three rich merchants. They lived at Chaniot. Chaniot is a small town in Pakistan. All the three brothers were Hindus and the offered Sharadhs every year. They gave corn, clothes and coins to the Brahmans as Dakshana. Sometimes they wondered if all these things were really reached their forefathers in the next world.

One day they came to Guru Arjan to find out his views about the Sharadhs and Dakshana. "O Guru," said Gobinda "We give Dakshana to the Brahmans in the name of our dear forefathers every year. Tell us whether all this reaches our forefathers or not?"

"No man can tell whether your forefathers are in heaven or hell." said the Guru smilingly. "No one can tell which Brahman will go to heaven and which to hell. Moreover even if a Brahman reaches your forefathers, how can he recognize them out of the millions of dead people? Stop thinking about such things and stop offering Sharadhs. Work hard, tell the truth, help others and remember God."

The three brothers agreed to act upon the Guru's advice and were satisfied, but there was another man, named Chuhar, who couldn't understand the Guru's advice. He said "Sir, how can a merchant like myself and people like Gobinda always speak the truth? Merchants have to tell many lies between sunrise and sunset every day."

“Go back to your village, Chuhar,” said the Guru. “Do your trading and try to act upon my advice. Everyday count your lies and good deeds, write them down on a piece of paper and show me that paper at the end of every month.” Chuhar agreed to act upon the Guru’s advice and went away.

From that day onwards. Chuhar counted and wrote down his lies and good deeds on a piece of paper. At the end of a month he came with it and showed it to the Guru The Guru asked him to read it out to the Sikhs and Chuhar did so. He had done no good deeds and had told a number of lies. He felt small and thought that he should have done better. The Guru however smiled and said, "Chuhar, leave your paper here and keep on trying."

At the end of the second month, Chuhar had really done some good deeds and had told fewer lies. And so it went on. At the end of the eighth month, Chuhar's lies and good deeds were added up. This showed that although he had done only a few good deeds, he had told no lies. Everybody was surprised. Guru Arjan said, "All advice falls flat on those who never think of acting upon it. People have been listening to good advice for thousands of years. The important thing is to act upon it. Cart-loads of books and all the learning in the world are of no use if we do not care to follow them."

All the Sikhs understood the Guru's advice and promised to act upon it.
"As a child is satisfied by drinking milk; As a poor man is happy on finding wealth; As a thirsty man is refreshed by drinking water; So is my soul happy with God."
(Guru Arjan)

"To forget God is death;
To meditate on His Name is life.
Nanak, God is found in the company of the saints."
(Guru Arjan)

Guru Amar Das was the third Guru of the Sikhs. He was over seventy years old when he became the Guru. He lived to the age of 95. The village, where Guru Amar Das was born is called Basarke. It is in the Amritsar District m the Punjab. His father Tej Bhan, was a small trader. Guru Angad, the Second Guru, lived at the village of Khadur. Khadur is three miles away from the river Beas It was there in Khadur that Amar Das learnt the lessons of love and service He would walk three miles to the river and bring water for the Guru's bath. This he did every day early in the morning for twelve years on end, he served his Master and the Sikhs. Some people did not like his job and called him a water-carrier. But Amar Das was happy in the Guru's service. Pleased with his loving service, Guru Angad made him the third Guru of the Sikhs after him.

Guru Angad had two sons named Datu and Dasu. Datu was proud and jealous. He was angry when he knew that his father had made Amar Das, the Guru of the Sikhs. After Guru Angad's death, Guru Amar Das left Khadur and moved away to Goindwal which is on the bank of the river Beas. At Khadur, Datu sat on the Guru's seat and told the Sikhs, "I am the prince of the Guru's line, The Guru's seat is mine. Amaru (Guru Amar Das) is old. He is my servant."

"Datu," said one of the Sikhs. "We know that you are the son of our second Guru, but the Guru thinks that birth alone does not make anyone great or small. It is good actions which make a man really great. So it is not the birthright of the Gurus son to become the Guru, is it? Did Guru Angad make you our Guru? Tell us the truth or we shall go away."

“I am the Guru’s elder son,” said Datu, “It is my right to be the Guru. I don’t care if some of the foolish Sikhs do not recognise me as the Guru”.

The Sikhs went away quietly. They learned that their real Guru was in Goindwal. Hundreds of Sikhs went to see the true Guru Amar Das. Datu did not like this at all He would not take the defeat lying down.
One day he reached Goindwal. He saw Guru Amar Das sitting on the Guru's seat. Hundreds of Sikhs were listening to the Guru s teachings. Some of them were busy serving in the Langar. Others were looking after the Guru's farm" It was a great sight to see the Guru's court. This was more than Datu could bear. He approached the Guru and said, "Only yesterday you were a water-carrier in our house and to-day you sit on the Guru's seat as a Guru."

"Dear Datu." said Guru Amar Das, "I am as humble as ever. I am the servant of all. It is God's will that I should act as the Guru. I love you as ever, since you are the son of my Master. Even now. I am at your service. What can I do for you?"
Datu was still very angry. He did not say anything. He was almost blind with rage. He kicked Guru Amar Das off his seat. The Sikhs ran up, caught Datu and began to beat him. But the Guru at once stopped them. The Guru was as mild and loving to Datu as before.

"Dear Datu." he said. " I thank you for your visit to my court. I love you as much as before. I know you kicked me in anger, but I am afraid my hard bones may have hurt your soft foot." Saying this, he held Datu's foot and began to massage it gently. But grumbling, Datu pulled away his foot and went away to his village.

The next day, Datu came back to the Guru's house at Goindwal and took away all the Guru's belongings by force. But on his way back to Khadur, he met some robbers. They took away all the money and goods which he had taken away from the Guru's house. They also gave him a good beating and broke one of his legs. They left him for dead. But he did not die. Instead he lived and suffered from pain in his leg tor a long time after that.

Once again the Guru’s Court was full of the Sikhs, because everybody knew by now that a man who hits and kicks in anger can never be the Guru. It is only the humble, calm and patient men like Amar Das Who can be the real Guru. So all Datu’s followers left him and joined the true Guru Amar Das.

The whole world is saying, 'Mine, Mine; yet worldly wealth goes with no one. Man suffers because of worldly love; Death is on the watch for everyone; 0 Nanak, only those who remember God's name will be saved
(Guru Amar Das)

Materialism, like the viper,
Has entangled the whole world in its grip,
Whosoever cuddles it, gets swallowed by it."
(Guru Amar Das)

The people of Punjab, both Hindus and Muslims, rose against the terrorist rule of the Nawab (Governor) of Sirhind. The Nawab was killed in 1710, i.e., just half a decade after he murdered the two innocent sons of Guru Gobind Singh. This brought a rule of peace and justice in the area of Punjab, east of Amritsar.

To again take over the control of Punjab from Banda, a strong army was sent from Delhi. The army generals feared to fight a battle with Banda, hence they tricked him with the pretension of having a dialogue with him for peace. They unarmed him and arrested him. His 700 men were also made prisoners along with a teenage boy, Hakikat Singh. All of them were taken to Delhi and asked to surrender to the Emperor. They refused bluntly. The government ordered the murder of everyone. About 100 Sikhs were murdered every day near Chandni Chauk, Delhi.

The mother of Hakikat Singh, whose only support and hope of life was her son, submitted a petition to the government to save the life of the boy. She narrated that her son was not a Sikh but was there in the Sikh camp when he was arrested. The Emperor ordered the release of the boy if the boy himself denied being a Sikh. The mother dashed with the release orders to the place where the Sikhs were being murdered. Her son was still waiting for his turn to be killed. Presenting the Farman - the order of the emperor - to the Kazi (Judge) supervising the murdering of the Sikhs, she requested the release of her son.

The Kazi called Hakikat Singh and asked him if he was a Sikh. The boy replied that he certainly was a Sikh. His mother intervened and told the Kazi that the boy was her son and she knew that he was not a Sikh. The boy emphasized that he was a committed Sikh. The son and the mother started arguing with each other. Khafi Khan, a Muslim historian, an eye witness who recorded these horrifying killings, was very surprised to hear those arguments.

The mother again asserted that her son was not a Sikh. However, the boy raising his voice retorted immediately that his mother was telling a lie in order to save his life. His father was dead, and he was the only support for her. Being a Sikh, he wanted to be murdered without further delay so that he may not be left behind by his Sikh associates already murdered. Before another word could be said by his mother, the boy was standing with his head bent before the butcher. The sword in the hand of the butcher lowered and Hakikat Singh attained his martyrdom.

Such blood curdling events of Sikh history made Sikhs stronger and even more fearless of the oppression let loose against them. Even today Sikhs don't hesitate to die for justice and human rights.

Even under a threat to their life, Sikhs do not tell a lie. They love to live as Sikhs or, they would prefer to die.

A man named Jack was walking along a steep cliff one day when he accidentally got too close to the edge and fell. On the way down he grabbed a branch, which temporarily stopped his fall. He looked down and to his horror saw that the canyon fell straight down for more than a thousand feet. He couldn't hang onto the branch forever, and there was no way for him to climb up the steep wall of the cliff.

So Jack began yelling for help, hoping that someone passing by would hear him and lower a rope or something. "HELP! HELP! Is anyone up there? "HELP!" He yelled for a long time, but no one heard him. He was about to give up when he heard a voice.

"Jack, Jack. Can you hear me?"

"Yes, yes! I can hear you. I'm down here!"

"I can see you, Jack. Are you all right?"

"Yes, but who are you, and where are you?

"I am the Lord, Jack. I'm everywhere."

"The Lord? You mean, GOD?"

"That's Me."

"God, please help me! I promise if, you'll get me down from here, I'll stop sinning. I'll be a really good person. I'll serve You for the rest of my life."

"Easy on the promises, Jack. Let's get you off from there, then we can talk."

"Now, here's what I want you to do. Listen carefully."

"I'll do anything, Lord. Just tell me what to do."

"Okay. Let go of the branch."

"What?"

"I said, let go of the branch." Just trust Me. Let go."

There was a long silence.

Finally Jack yelled, "HELP! HELP! IS ANYONE ELSE UP THERE?"

Have you ever felt like Jack? We say that we want to know the will of Guru Ji, but when we find out what it is, we can't handle it. Sounds too scary, too difficult. We decide to look elsewhere. When Satguru Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji Maharaj stands infront of us with his sword in his hand, and says, "Let go of the things that stand between you and Me, and trust Me with your life, give me your head" it sounds pretty scary. But when we let go, we find his hands are the safest place to be in.
