Waheguru ji ka khalsa Waheguru ji ki fateh

Deadlines are necessary, and pressure is a good thing. In spite of all the appropriate warnings we hear about stress, the ideal state is not an environment totally without it. At first blush, you may disagree with me. But let me tell you a story.

In an old black-and-white episode of Rod Serling's "The Twilight Zone," a mobster dies and finds himself in a gorgeous penthouse in a high-rise casino. Things were perfect! Every time he placed a bet, he won. Every joke he told elicited belly laughs. He had everything he had ever dreamed of having. And it was effortless.

Eventually, however, he began to feel restless and bored. Always winning and always getting just what he wanted had somehow numbed his ability to find joy in anything. In his undemanding environment, he began to crave a challenge.

So the stress-free, always-victorious tough guy went to the gray-haired fellow who appeared to be the curator of the place. He asked if maybe God hadn't made a mistake by sending him to heaven. The cordial host said that God hadn't sent him to heaven. In that exchange, the mobster realized he had been consigned to hell.

Although we sometimes fault God for creating Planet Earth as a place that tests our mettle, challenge is wholesome. Just as lifting weights builds muscle, facing the routine trials and occasional catastrophes of life builds character. Duty, work, and challenge are necessary elements of a life that would experience the joy of accomplishment and triumph.

We tend to grumble when we think we're getting a raw deal or that life is being unfair. But it is not unfair for any one of us to have to pull her load, earn his keep, or otherwise justify the space he or she occupies.

Your greatest fear today is actually your greatest opportunity. With God as your partner, you can face the challenge and grow from it. The ultimate vexation is neither struggle nor failure but a life so monotonous that it offers no victories over hardship.

WAHEGURU JI KA KHALSA WAHEGURU JI KI FATEH

Bhai Tilaku jee and a Yogi - By Bhai Kulbir Singh

Bhai Tilaku was a Sikh of Siri Guru Arjun Dev jee and lived in the Garh Shankar town of Punjab. Garh Shankar is in Jalandhar or Hoshiarpur district of Punjab. He was a great rasiya of Naam and Gurbani. He used to recite Mool Mantr a lot and his abhyaas was so intensive that he did not let any moment go without Mool Mantr.

He led his life in a very honest fashion and never said anything bad to anyone. He never used to bow his head to anyone other than Guru Sahib. He earned his living working hard and neither he owed anyone nor anyone owed him anything. He lived his life totally free of the worldly chains of Kaam, Krodh, Lobh, Moh and Ahankaar.

In Garh Shankar there also lived a Yogi who was an accomplished Yogi. He had a lot of Ridhi Sidhi (mystical powers). He was more than 100 years old and had a great following in the city he lived in. Along with Ridhi Sidhi, he also was infected with the Haume Rog (disease of Ego). People used to sing his praises on his face and this resulted in his downfall and he developed the terrible haume rog.

The Yogi organized a great bhandaara (inviting people to his house for eating) in which everyone from the town was invited. The Yogi announced that whoever would attend his bhandaara would get 2 years of Swarag (heaven). Hearing the Yogi’s invitation, the residents of Garh Shankar flocked to the dera of the Yogi and sang his praises.

Hearing his praises, the Yogi got more egoistic and asked his followers to see if anyone from the town had not come to his bhandaara. The Yogi’s followers came back and told him that Bhai Tilaku had not come to his bhandaara. They also told the Yogi that Bhai Tilaku had said that he did not need any Swarag and as thus did not need to attend the bhandaara.

The Yogi’s ego got hurt hearing Bhai Tilaku’s response and he sent his followers telling them that he was offering Bhai Tilaku 10 years in Swarag, if he agreed to come to the bhandaara. Hearing this Bhai Tilaku smilingly said that he would consider any effort for Swarag a paap and as such refused to go to the bhandaara.

KYA NARAK, KYAA SURAG BICHAARA, SANTAN DOYOO RAADE||
(The Gursikh sant don't care about heaven and hell as they don't have to go to either of these places)

Hearing the response of Bhai Tilaku, the Yogi got very upset. Everyone had found out by then that Bhai Tilaku had refused to come. The Yogi, vowed that he would use his Yogic powers and force Bhai Tilaku to come. He developed a great feeling of enmity and anger towards Bhai Tilaku. Because of his such feelings, his kamaayee (spiritual earnings) got reduced.

The Yogi got into smadhi and using his yogic powers and called up the evil powers like bhoots, prets and birs. He dispatched them to go to Bhai Tilaku and force him to come to him. The evil powers arrived at Bhai Tilaku’s house and tried to harm Bhai Sahib. As these powers arrived closer to Bhai Sahib, they felt helpless to hurt him. Bhai Sahib was reciting Mool Mantr with utmost concentration. They tried their best but could not do anything.

After trying and losing to Bhai Sahib, the evil forces came back to the Yogi and expressed their helplessness. By then, the Yogi felt empty as his power had got spent in trying to harm Bhai Sahib. The evil powers told the Yogi that some higher power was protecting Bhai Sahib.

The Yogi after losing all his shakti, came back to his senses and decided to go and see Bhai Tilaku himself. He arrived at his house and knocked his door. He was accompanied by the whole city. When Bhai Sahib opened his door, the Yogi very humbly saluted him and Bhai Sahib responded accordingly. The first question the Yogi asked was about the identity of Bhai Sahib’s Guru. Bhai Sahib responded by saying that he was a humble servant of Guru Arjun Dev jee.

At this the Yogi asked him about the mantra he used against him. Bhai Tilaku told him about Guru Sahib’s baani and also told him that he did not have any bad feeling for the Yogi and he did not use it against him. He told the Yogi that Gurbani was pure amrit (nector) and reciting baani is like drinking sweet amrit.

Hearing some baani from Bhai Sahib, the Yogi felt compelled to see Guru Sahib. Bhai Tilaku brought the Yogi to Siri Amritsar Sahib, where the Yogi met Guru Sahib and became his Sikh.

Bhai Tilaku jee’s saakhi gives us some very valuable lessons:

1. We must only bow before Guru and his sangat.
2. We should have all our expectations on Naam and Gurbani alone.
3. If we keep our expectations on Naam and Gurbani and have faith in them, nothing can harm us.
4. We must live an honest life and keep other morals.
5. No matter how strong or great, we should not leave our Guru and go to someone else for anything.

WAHEGURU JI KA KHALSA WAHEGURU JI KI FATEH

The Qazi had a beautiful daughter, Kaulan who was a disciple of Mian Mir. From her childhood she had occupied her mind praising God's Name and remembering Him in the company of the saints.

Through the holy company of Mian Mir, she had heard praises of Satguru Sri Guru Har Gobind Sahib Ji Maharaj and she praised Satguru Ji in the midst of her own family.

This incensed her father very much who addressed her,"O Infidel, you praise an infidel (Guru) and obey not the law of Mohammad, according to which it is forbidden, under penalty of death, to praise an infidel."

Kaulan replied, "Father dear, the law of Mohammad does not apply to holy men. Saints are God's servants."

On hearing this from her daughter, the Qazi burnt with bigotry and indignation. After consulting his brother Qazis, he issued an order for the execution of his daughter, Kaulan for her sin of transgressing the Mohammad law.

Kaulan's mother informed her daughter and Mian Mir about the order of the Qazi. Mian Mir recommended to Kaulan, "There appears no means of saving you here. It is better if you go to Amritsar and seek protection of Satguru Sri Guru Har Gobind Sahib Ji Maharaj, the king of kings and the saint of saints. None else but he can save your life." Kaulan heeded Mian Mir's advice and went to Amritsar.

Kaulan began her life at Amritsar under the protection of Satguru Ji. She was given a separate building to reside. Kaulan found consolation in repeating following Sabad:

Quite a bit of time passed in this manner until one day she took all her jewels and placed them before the king of kings, Satguru Ji, Sri Guru Har Gobind Sahib Ji Maharaj and said, "O friend of the poor, please apply the price of these jewels to some religious object by which my name may be remembered in the world for sometime."

Satguru Ji got a tank excavated in her name with that money in 1621. The tank is still famous as Kaulsar in the city of Amritsar.

Vaheguroo Ji Ka Khalsa Vaheguroo Ji Ki Fateh

Once in the darbaar of Guru Gobind Singh jee, a Sikh called Laal Singh came with a shield. He had spent a lot of time constructing this shield which was almost impossible to penetrate. It was not only strong but was also very light. Everyone in the darbaar praised the dhaal (shield) and Guru Sahib too expressed his happiness at the dhaal.

Bhai Laal Singh was a very good Sikh but when so many people praised his dhaal, he developed haume (ego) and declared in the sangat that no bullet can penetrate his shield. He said this very egoistically. As soon as he said this Guru Sahib told him that he would test Laal Singh’s dhaal the next day. Bhai Laal Singh still did not realize his mistake and accepted the challenge saying that no bullet could penetrate his shield.

As he came out of the darbaar of Guru Sahib, he realized that he had committed a blunder. He said to himself that Guru Sahib is a known warrior and on top of that he is Satguru. What could stop him from penetrating his shield? He greatly regretted his mistake and came to his lodging area greatly depressed. Although, he realized his mistake of challenging the sangat, he still wanted Guru Sahib to keep his honour and not let anyone break his shield.

He consulted his friends who were gursikhs as well and asked them what to do. They told him that Guru Sahib could no doubt penetrate his shield. They suggested to him that the only way for him to save his honour was to perform ardaas in front of Guru Sahib. Bhai Laal Singh prepared Trihaaval (Karaah Parshaad) and along with other Gursikhs did ardaas before Satguru to save his honour. After the ardaas, he distributed trihaaval amongst the sangat present there.

Bhai Laal Singh did not sleep all night and kept doing paath all night. The next day Bhai Laal Singh arrived in the darbaar of Guru Kalgidhar Paatshaah but he arrived very humbly. After the bhog of kirtan, Guru Sahib asked Bhai Laal Singh to get ready as he was going to test his dhaal. Bhai Laal Singh did not accept the challenge as he had done the previous day but responded very humbly to Guru Sahib.

Guru Sahib asked Bhai Aalam Singh to test the dhaal. Bhai Laal Singh stood there with the dhaal, constantly doing naam and paath. Bhai Aalam Singh tried three times but the bullet missed the dhaal and did not hit it. Then Guru Sahib smilingly took over the gun and took aim at the dhaal.

Guru Sahib just stood there but did not fire. After few moments he called off his aim and asked Bhai Laal Singh what he had been doing all night. Bhai Laal Singh fell at the lotus feet of Guru Sahib and told him everything. Guru Sahib, blessed Bhai Laal Singh and declared that indeed, no one could penetrate the dhaal as Vaheguru himself and all Gurus were present to protect the dhaal. Guru Sahib told Bhai Laal Singh to never talk in haume again.

CONCLUSION

1) So great is our Guru. Guru Sahib himself accepted the defeat by not penetrating the dhaal but protected the honour of his Sikh. Why should we leave such great Guru and get indulged in maaiya? Aseen kurbaan kyoon nahi ho jaande apne Guru uppar?

2) Another thing we learn from this saakhi is that it is a good idea to prepare degh with full maryada and perform ardaas for our difficult kaarajs. Nothing in impossible if we do ardaas with full faith.

3) It is not a good idea to talk egoistically in sangat. If we talk this way, we are bound to get dishonoured.

4) Guru does not consider our shortcomings and weaknesses when we do ardaas. He ignores our shortcomings and accepts ardaas that is done with faith.

Religion, Faith, Spirituality / Dhan Sri Guru Ram Das Ji
« on: September 14, 2010, 09:40:07 AM »
Many writers have expressed their opinion that Akbar granted the land only to Guru Ram Das on which he founded the city of Ramdaspur (later known as Amritsar), and so they contend that the city of Amritsar was not founded during the time of Guru Amar Das. It is also a well-known fact of Sikh history that Emperor Akbar came to Goindwal and he dined with the common people in the Guru's langar before he could see the Guru. It seems that the Emperor granted the estate in the name of Bibi Bhani at that time, and Jethaji being her husband, was made incharge of the estate by Guru Amar Das. Guru Nanak awarded the Guruship to Bhai Lehna and not to his sons, and it is quite obvious that in order to avoid hostility of his sons towards his successor, he asked Guru Angad to move to Khadur instead of continuing to live in Kartarpur. The same circumstances prevailed during the reign of second and third Gurus. It is, therefore, quite likely that the planning of a new city was called for during the reign of Guru Amar Das as mentioned in the previous part.
Bhai Jetha (Guru Amardas) used to earn his livlihood by selling boiled grains. Very often he would freely give away the boiled grains to the needy and to the poor labourers. Guru Amardas was highly impressed by his charitable nature and blessed the young boy. Ultimately the divine succession was bestowed on him, he was named Ramdas and was installed as the fourth Guru (Nanak).

Guru Ram Das left Goindwal for his new colony. Many Sikhs followed the Guru and settled there. At first this city was called Ramdaspur, which is now called Amritsar. A revenue collector of Patti in district of Lahore had five daughters, the fifth daughter was very religious. One day the father asked who gave them to eat and drink. The first four daughters said that it were their parents who had provided them with food and other necessities of life, but the fifth daughter told her parents that God was the only Cherisher of His creation. On hearing this reply her father got very angry and remarked,I shall see if God will protect you.

One day a crippled leper came to the town and the father married his fifth daughter to him to teach her a lesson. She willfully accepted him as her true husband. She put him in a basket and carried him on her head, and begged from door to door to maintain their livelihood. One day she left him under a tree near a pool of water and went to the nearby colony to beg for food. The leper saw some crows (black in color) dipping in the water and they turned white when came out of the water. The leper thought that the water had some miraculous healing property. So he left his basket and crawled into the water, and lo, the leprosy at once disappeared from the body except one finger which was left out of water. When the lady came back, she did not believe the story of the healed leper. Ultimately they went to Guru Ram Das, who confirmed saying that the pool possesseth such extraordinary efficacy which the man alleged. Upon this the couple became Guru's followers and they worked in the excavation of the tank later on.

The tree under the shade of which she left her husband, is still standing there and is called 'Dukhbhanjni Beri'. The pool was known as Amritsar- tank of nectar, the place itself came to be known as the city of Amritsar. The work was not finished by Guru Ram Das but it was completed by his successor, Guru Arjan Dev.

GURU RAM DAS AND SRICHAND:

Guru Ramdas (1534-1581 AD) laid the foundation stone of Amritsar on 13th June 1577. The devotees have been visiting the Holy City since its existence, for having a dip in the ascred 'Sarovar' and also for promoting their trade.

Baba Srichand, the eldest son of Guru Nanak, had founded a religious sect of his own known as Udasis. He visited Amritsar and came to see Guru Ram Das. On seeing Guru's long flowing beard, Baba Srichand asked him jocularly why he grew it that long. The Guru replied,To wipe the dust from the holy feet of the saints like you. 'Your this sweet humility is the magic that makes you so great and makes me feel so small,' replied Srichand. Baba Srichand promised the Guru his co-operation. After that the Udasis spared no pains to serve Sikh eligion. It is said that after the death of Banda Bahadur, when the Mughal rulers decided to root out Sikh religion, it was the Udasis who kept the Divine spark of the Sikh faith alight.

FREE KITCHEN (GURU KA LANGAR):

Like his predecessors, Guru Ram Das carried on the work of Langar in a more elaborate and methodical way. As in the past strict adherence was made to the term 'Pangat' in Langar. Anybody irrespective of race, caste, creed, religion or sex, could partake of food without any hesitation. The caste system and pilgrimages were decried and superstitions were denounced.

NEW CUSTOMS:

Guru Ram Das composed a hymn known as 'Lawan' in Suhi Mohalla 4, page 773 of Guru Granth Sahib, and asked his Sikhs to recite them to solemnize marriages. The Sabad 'Lawan' embodies in itself a lesson for the couple to develop true love for each other. In reality this Sabad is for a human being to develop love for the divine ridegroom.

The Guru composed the following Sabad to instruct his Sikhs in the practice of their religion:

He who calleth himself a Sikh of the true Guru, should rise early and meditate on God;

He should make an effort early in the morning, bathe in the inner tank of nectar;

Repeat God's Name under Guru's instruction, and all his sins and transgressions shall be erased;

At sunrise he should sing the Guru's hymns, and whether sitting or standing meditate on God's Name;

The disciple who at every breath meditateth on God, will be dear to the Guru; The Guru imparteth

instruction to that disciple to whom my Lord bestows His grace;

The servant Nanak prayeth for the dust of the feet of such a disciple of the Guru who himself repeateth

God's Name and causeth others to do so.

(Gauri Ki //- Mohalla 4, p-305-6)

SELECTION OF GURUSHIP:

Sahari Mal, Guru's cousin from Lahore, invited the Guru to grace his son's marriage. For some reason the Guru could not go, but he asked his eldest son, Prithi Chand to attend the marriage. Prithi Chand refused to go. His refusal is attributed to possibly two motives. It is said that he was incharge of the offerings that were made to the Guru and was able to furtively set aside much wealth for himself. If he had gone to Lahore, this illicit gain might have fallen in somebody else's hands. Secondly he thought that the time was fast approaching for the selection of a person to succeed his father as Guru and so he should remain in Amritsar. Mahadev, the Guru's second son, did not want to go because of his indifference to worldly affairs. The third son, Arjan Dev agreed to attend the marriage. He was instructed to stay on in Lahore after the marriage to look after the affairs of the Sikh Sangat of that place.

After some time he started feeling the pangs of separation for his father and the Guru, and wrote three letters, two of which were intercepted by his elder brother, Prithi Chand. A letter marked '3', reached the Guru and Arjan Dev was immediately recalled from Lahore. On his return he told his father that he had sent three letters. The truth came to light and Prithi Chand was forced to produce the other two letters. Thus Prithi Chand's actions were exposed.

Guru Ram Das embraced Arjan Dev, sent for five paise and a coco-nut, and placed them before him. He descending from his throne, seated him there before the whole assembly of the Sikhs. Bhai Buddha affixed the tilak of spiritual sovereignty to Arjan Dev's forehead, and thus he was proclaimed as Guru Arjan Dev. This appened in August, 1581.

Prithi Chand became so mad that he addressed his father in abusive language. He told Bhai Buddha that his father acted improperly in giving Guruship to his younger brother. He vowed that he would remove Guru Arjan and would seat himself on the Guru Gaddi (throne). The Guru counselled him not to quarrel about it, but Prithi Chand refused to submit and adopted an attitude of open defiance.

Having nominated Guru Arjan Dev, Guru Ram Das left for his old headquarters at Goindwal. After a few days He left eft this world on the first of September, 1581.

Brand New Details On the iPod touch 4G

.According to a source who would have reason to know, the fourth-generation iPod touch is changing back shapes—sorry, readers who have been posting with love for the dome-like curved iPod touch 2G/3G back, but that’s going away. And it’s not going to be glass like the iPhone 4, for all of you folks who were fearing accidental shatters like the ones we’ve heard Apple Stores are continuing to see on a daily basis. The new shape is…

Familiar. Think of the top of a MacBook Pro, only smaller, which is to say flat rather than curved at the center—closer to the look of the first-generation iPod touch’s back, only with modifications. The rear camera is there, but there is still some question as to whether what’s next to it will be a LED flash like the one in the iPhone 4, or a microphone like the one next to the video camera of the iPod nano. We’ve been told to expect a microphone rather than a flash, with a continuation of the bottom-mounted headphone port and Dock Connector port.

And we’re continuing to hear from sources that the little touchscreen device—the one with the sub-2-inch screen—is being thought of as a nano rather than a shuffle, even though it doesn’t make much sense to us. We’ll know more soon enough.

Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh

Sant Nidhan Singh Ji’s name and life stories are often given to the sangat to show them how a true Sikh of Dhan Guru Nanak Dev Ji Maharaj should conduct themselves. This is the story of how Sant Ji became a sevadaar at Sachkhand Sri Hazur Sahib Ji.

Sant Ji was born in 1882 in the village Nadholaa. After finishing school Sant Ji joined the army where he commanded great respect due to his high spiritual status. From a very young age Sant Ji always strived to find the lotus feet of Dhan Guru Nanak Dev Ji Maharaj and as such constantly kept the name of Akaal Purakh on his lips.

One day as Sant Ji was mediating under a tree in the jungle close to his barracks he saw a bright light followed by a group of Shaheed Singhs dressed all in blue riding their horses while gurbani resounded throughout the jungle. Sant Ji immediately got up and began to follow the Shaheed Singhs. In this way the Shaheed Singhs and Sant Ji eventually reached Sachkhand Sri Hazur Sahib Ji.

Upon reaching Sachkhand Sri Hazur Sahib Ji Sant Nidhan Singh Ji made up his mind to give up his army job so that he could serve Guru Sahib’s sangat. Sant Ji took such good care of the sangat that the other sevadaars became very jealous of him, as all the sangat would talk about the devotion he had towards Dhan Guru Nanak Dev Ji Maharaj.

The sevadaars made up an excuse and collectively told Sant Ji that he could no longer do seva at Sachkhand Sri Hazur Sahib Ji. When Sant Ji heard this his heart began to cry but he accepted their orders and decided to head back to Punjab. As Sant Ji made his way back he stopped somewhere for the night and began to mediate on the name of Akaal Purakh. A few seconds after Sant Ji started doing the heard a horse galloping towards him. When Sant Ji opened his eyes he saw Satguru Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji Maharaj the king of kings and the saint of saints standing in front of him.

Sant Ji with tears in his eyes bowed before Guru Sahib and kissed his holy feet. Guru Sahib with his two hands picked his Sikh up and asked him, ‘Where are you going? Why are you leaving the seva that I had blessed you with?’

Sant Ji humbly told Guru Sahib that he already knew about all the events, which had transpired. Guru Sahib smiled and said, ‘Nidhan Singh you must go back to Sachkhand Sri Hazur Sahib Ji and start the langar seva’. Sant Ji looked at his beloved Guru and said, ‘Guru Ji, I have nothing how can I start this seva?’

Guru Sahib then said, ‘With my pocket and your hands this will be accomplished. Now let us go back to Sachkhand Sri Hazur Sahib Ji.’

Together Guru Ji and Sant Ji went back to Sachkhand Sri Hazur Sahib Ji where Guru Sahib’s bachan was fulfilled.

WAHEGURU JI KA KHALSA WAHEGURU JI KI FATEH

When Bhagat Ravi Das arrived at years of discretion he began to wait on saints. He used to present them with everything he could get from his father's house. His father was displeased at this and gave him a seperate place to live. Though his father was a rich man, he gave nothing to his son.

In due time Bhagat Ravi Das was married and supported himself and his wife by making shoes, and lived very happily. Whenever he saw a holy man he supplied him gratuitously with covering for their feet.

Bhagat Ravi Das was ever immersed in his devotions a circumstance which lef to the abandonment of his trade and the deterioration of his circumstances. He soon presented all the external marks of poverty and hard life, yet his heart was glad and happy in the contemplation of Waheguru. It was during this period of distress that a holy man desired to render him assistance. Bhagat Ravi Das gave him bread to eat and lavished every attention on him.

His visitor in return presented him with a philosopher's stone, explained its qualities and told him to keep it carefully. Bhagat Ravi Das replied that he did not require it, as his property and wealth consisted in the name of Waheguru. When the visitor saw that Bhagat Ravi Das absolutely coveted nothing, he implored him to accept the philosopher's stone.

Bhagat Ravi Das told the visitor that he might leave it in the thatch of his house, by which he meant that the article was not worth acceptance. The visitor obeyed and departed. On that ocassion Bhagat Ravi Das composed the following hymn:

God's name is the great wealth of God's saints;
Day and day it increases and in no way decreases,
Nothing can steal it either by day or by night; its possessor sleeps secure in his home.
O God, what is the need of a stone for someone who possesses this wealth?

After thirteen months the visitor returned and found Bhagat Ravi Das Ji, in the same circumstances as before. He asked what had become of the philosopher's stone. Bhagat Ravi Das Ji said, 'It must be where you put it; I have been afraid to touch it.'

Upon this the visitor took it from the thatch and departed, fully satisfied that Bhagat Ravi Das desired nor required no earthly wealth.

Gauree Bairaagan:
One Universal Creator God. By The Grace Of The True Guru:
In the Golden Age of Sat Yuga, was Truth; in the Silver Age of Trayta Yuga, charitable feasts; in the Brass Age of Dwaapar Yuga, there was worship.
In those three ages, people held to these three ways. But in the Iron Age of Kali Yuga, the Name of the Lord is your only Support. ||1||
How can I swim across?
No one has explained to me,
so that I might understand how I can escape reincarnation. ||1||Pause||
So many forms of religion have been described; the whole world is practicing them.
What actions will bring emancipation, and total perfection? ||2||
One may distinguish between good and evil actions, and listen to the Vedas and the Puraanas,
but doubt still persists. Skepticism continually dwells in the heart, so who can eradicate egotistical pride? ||3||
Outwardly, he washes with water, but deep within, his heart is tarnished by all sorts of vices.
So how can he become pure? His method of purification is like that of an elephant, covering himself with dust right after his bath! ||4||
With the rising of the sun, the night is brought to its end; the whole world knows this.
It is believed that with the touch of the Philosopher's Stone, copper is immediately transformed into gold. ||5||
When one meets the Supreme Philosopher's Stone, the Guru, if such pre-ordained destiny is written on one's forehead,
then the soul blends with the Supreme Soul, and the stubborn doors are opened wide. ||6||
Through the way of devotion, the intellect is imbued with Truth; doubts, entanglements and vices are cut away.
The mind is restrained, and one attains joy, contemplating the One Lord, who is both with and without qualities. ||7||
I have tried many methods, but by turning it away, the noose of doubt is not turned away.
Love and devotion have not welled up within me, and so Ravi Daas is sad and depressed. ||8||1||

Religion, Faith, Spirituality / The Liberated Dancing Bear

Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh

One day after the morning congregation was over a man brought a large bear into the darbar of Dhan Dhan Satguru Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji Maharaj. The man wanted to give a performance with his bear before Guru Sahib and the sangat and as a consequence asked for permission. On being permitted to do so he began to wrestle with his bear. After a while he used his stick to make the bear do all sorts of tricks.

At the time a Sikh called Bhai Kirtia Ji was doing chaur seva over Dhan Dhan Satguru Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji Maharaj. As the bear did it’s tricks Bhai Kirtia Ji would begin to laugh out loudly. Towards the end of the performance Guru Sahib turned to Bhai Kirtia and asked him, “Bhai Kirtia do you not recognise the bear?” Bhai Kirtia looked confused and said, “Guru Ji it is a bear I have never seen” Guru Sahib smiled and said, “Bhai Kirita it is your father Bhai Gurdas”.

Upon hearing this Bhai Kirita was really surprised and upset. He folded his hands together and humbly said to Guru Sahib, “O Guru of the world, my father always did seva in your holy darbar. He would get up early in the morning and recite his prayers. He also served the ninth King, Dhan Dhan Satguru Sri Guru Tegh Bahahdur Ji Maharaj. Having done such dedicated seva how can this be the reward given to him? If this is his fate what fate awaits someone like me? Please be kind and tell me why my father ended up in this unfortunate position after serving the house of Dhan Guru Nanak Dev Ji Maharaj with such love and devotion.”

Guru Ji said, “It is correct that your father had served Dhan Dhan Satguru Sri Guru Tegh Bahadhur Ji Maharaj devotedly. But on one occasion, while he was distributing karah prasad, a passing Gursikh came into darbar sahib to bow before the king of kings, with a cartload of goods on the move. After paying his respects to Dhan Dhan Satguru Sri Guru Tegh Bahadhur Ji Maharaj and the sangat the Gursikh begged for some prasad but your father refused to give him any. Instead, he reprimanded that Gursikh for making the request again and again and for advancing towards him like a bear. That Gursikh picked up a small piece of prasad which had fallen on the floor and uttered, ‘Waheguru’, and went away asking Akaal Purakh why some Sikhs of Dhan Guru Nanak Dev Ji Maharaj had forgotten the true spirit of Sikhi. According to this Gursikh those fake Sikhs were the real bears. A few days after this incident your father died and on account of the words uttered by that Gursikh was born again as the bear who sits in front of us today.”

On hearing these words of Dhan Dhan Satguru Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji Maharaj the entire congregation felt pity for Bhai Gurdas Ji and collectively they begged Guru Ji to somehow redeem Bhai Gurdas Ji from that sort of life. Guru Sahib smiled at his Sikhs and turned towards the owner of the bear and asked him what price he was willing to sell the bear? The owner of the bear agreed to part with the animal for 200 rupees. Guru Sahib took 200 rupees from his own pocket and paid the owner of the bear.

After this the bear sat at the feet of Dhan Dhan Satguru Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji Maharaj. Guru Sahib then got some karah prasad prepared which was distributed to all the sangat. Guru Sahib fed the bear a bit of prasad. A few seconds after Guru Ji had done this the bear went to sleep for the last time and Bhai Gurdas Ji’s soul was liberated by that King of this world and the next.

There are many morals to learn from this sakhi. Would someone be so kind as to explain what these are?

Religion, Faith, Spirituality / Dhan Guru Nanak Dev Ji Maharaj ...The Takka
« on: September 09, 2010, 07:06:02 AM »
vaheguru ji ka khalsa vaheguru ji ki fateh

(Taken from http www.manvirsingh.blogspot.com)

Guru Nanak Sahib jee was sitting in the gathering of the Sangat along with his sons, when he lifted one takka (a 2 paise coin) and held it in his hand. Guru jee asked Baba Siri Chand, his elder son, "What do you see lying in my hand?" Baba Siri Chand replied, "I see only a takka, which you had just lifted in front of the entire Sangat. What else could it be?" Guru jee then turned to his younger son, Baba Lakhmi Daas, to ask him the same question, which he got the same reply.

Guru Nanak Sahib jee asked the Sangat members what they saw, which they humbly replied, “O Guru Gareeb Niwaaj (O Guru, Sanctury of the Helpless) due to our limited vision we can only say that there is one takka in your palm." When Guru jee asked Bhai Lehna jee, "O Dear Sikh! What do you see lying in my hand?” Bhai Lehna jee with utmost humility, tears rolling down his eyes and with folded hands said, “O Sachey Paatshaah (O True King!), with my little vision, I see all the wealth and happiness of this world (lok) and the next world (parlok) in your hands. I am unable to see beyond that”.

May Waheguru do kirpaa on us all that when we look at Satguru Sri Guru Granth Sahib jee, we don't just see ink, paper and the colourful decorated rumaalay (draperies). Instead, may we be blessed with the vision of seeing living, speaking and ever-present Jyot (Divine Light) of Guru Nanak Sahib jee manifest in full glory in the Partak Guru, Satguru Sri Guru Granth Sahib jee.

14.33 -Guru Nanak Dev Jee's Eyes

Guru Nanak Dev jee describes when he was called into the Master's prescence and given the mission to spread the Lord's glory:

PAUREE: I was a minstrel, out of work, when the Lord took me into His service. To sing His Praises day and night, He gave me His Order, right from the start. My Lord and Master has summoned me, His minstrel, to the True Mansion of His Presence. He has dressed me in the robes of His True Praise and Glory. The Ambrosial Nectar of the True Name has become my food. Those who follow the Guru's Teachings, who eat this food and are satisfied, find peace. His minstrel spreads His Glory, singing and vibrating the Word of His Shabad. O Nanak, praising the True Lord, I have obtained His Perfection. || 27 || panna 150 of Guroo Granth Sahib Jee.

This divine union with the Master occurred when the young Nanak Dev Jee went as usual for his very early morning dip ( 1 or 2 am?) in the River.

Nanak's dead!
Nanak's dead!
He jumped into the river
and sunk like lead
Down! Down!
Must have drowned!
His clothes were found
but he wasn't around.

Don't cry
Mata Tripta Jee
Listen to
Bibee Nanakee

"No need to cry mum,
Nanak's different
more than your son
he's heaven sent.
More than a man
he knows God's ways
you'll understand
in just 3 days"

Nanak's a Ghost!
Nanak's a Demon!
He came out of the river
glowing like the sun.

Saying "Ik Oankar!"
One Supreme Soul
from where we sprung,
returning is our goal

"Sat-naam",
The Name is True
meditate on Waheguru
and become eternal too.

"KartaPurakh"
The Creative Being
marvel at the wonder
of everything you're seeing.

"Nirbhau"
The Fearless One
Why should we worry
Our Master's scared of none.

"NirVair"
The One Without Hate
Loving each creature
Our Master is great.

"Akal Moorat"
One Deathless Form
Meditate on this Being
not a picture or a stone.

"Ajunee"
Never born to die,
Our soul re-incarnates

"Saiban(g)"
The Self-Existant One
Self-created light
brighter than the sun.

"Gur Prasad"
The Guru's Kindness
leads us to light
from our blindness.

Nanak's Alive!
Nanak SatGuru!
He looked at me
and said "God's in you".
To realise this
there's one thing to do:

"Jap"
Repeat the Name
of Wonder Guroo
Guroo of Guroos
Vaahi-Guroo!

I looked at his eyes
his face was too bright
falling at his feet
into the lovelight

I saw the world
through His eyes
love, love, love
that never dies
wave after wave
flooding seas and skies
Was a Muslim born?
is it a Hindu that dies?
God is True
religious labels are lies.

Nanak's Alive!
Nanak SatGuru!
He looked at me
and said "God is True".

"Ad Sach"
True in the Beginning
"Jugad Sach"
True when the Ages began
"Ha bhee Sach"

Religion, Faith, Spirituality / The Guru, The Emperor And The Grass-Cutter
« on: September 07, 2010, 08:29:12 AM »
Guru Hargobind knew that now was time to prepare an army of saint-soldiers. He understood that it was necessary for the defense of the Sikhs and of the Dharma. He would never attack anyone, but if someone made war, his Sikhs must be able to defend themselves and to defend others. Guru Hargobind is a beautiful saint and the Sikhs love him very much, we say, "Guru ji, may we be at your feet, you are the True emperor, you are the True King."

The Emperor of India at that time was Jahangir. Emperor Jahangir heard some slander from an enemy of the Guru, "Guru Arjun was killed by your orders, your majesty. His son, Hargobind, is now the Guru. He's making preparations for war! He keeps a strong army, he wants to take revenge for his fathers death. He wants to be king himself, he already calls himself the 'True King'. He lives like a king and he cares for no one." But the emperor had also heard good things about the Guru from his advisers, "I pray your Majesty, do not listen to anyone who speaks bad about the Guru, The Guru has no desire for empire. He always meditates on the Name of God, he is wealthy and famous because of God's gift."

So the emperor asked to see the Guru. When he met the Guru, emperor Jahangir was impressed. Even more than that, one day when a tiger attacked the emperor while he was out walking with the Guru! Everyone was really afraid, but Guru Hargobind jumped off his horse blocked the ferocious tiger with his shield and then ended the tigers life. Jahangir thought, "I am so grateful! No one could stop that tiger but the Guru saved my life." What do you think the emperor would have done if the Guru wasn't there to save his life?

Even though he admired Guru Hargobind, he still had some doubts. He still had fear in him. One time he asked Guru ji, "O Guru, I've been told that you are supposed to be a holy man but instead you do worldly things. You make your Sikhs call you the True Emperor, but I am the emperor. Your Sikhs call me a false king. Isn't this true?" Guru ji explained to him that he was following the example of Guru Nanak and how it was his duty to take care of the Sikhs both spiritually and physically, "I love my Sikhs, and they love me. I can not stop them from saying these things with such love. It is by saying these things that love expresses itself in words, it is only natural. I have never told anyone to call me a True Emperor, in Guru Nanak's house God is the only Emperor."

The emperor heard this but he was not satisfied. They went to their different tents. Later that day a poor young grass cutter from that area heard that the Guru was nearby! He immediately came to the Guru's camp, "Is the True Emperor here?! I heard he is near, please tell me where he is." They thought he was talking about Jahangir, "Oh yes, the emperor is sitting under the shade of that tree right over there." The grass cutter ran over there and put a penny in front of the emperor. He thought he was the Guru and he fell at his feet and prayed, "O True Emperor, all other kings are false. They rule for a short time, Your rule is forever and is beyond this world. Bless my soul, wash away my karmas, bring me in to your house of wisdom of light. It is you who can give true protection, it is YOU who saves!" Jahangir looked around and said, "This man wants me to bless his soul and save him from spiritual darkness, I do not have the power to do that. I can not even save my own life, how will I save his soul?"

In that moment he saw for himself that it is the Sikhs who called the Guru "True Emperor." Jahangir admitted to the grass-cutter, "I am not the True Emperor, I am false, your True King is over there." The Grass-cutter picked up his penny and ran to where the Guru sat, "O Guru...." He prayed at the feet of the Guru and Guru ji blessed him, "Always be sweet and humble in your words and actions. Love everyone and hate no one. Work honestly and share whatever you have. Always be good to others and always be fair to everyone. God is with you every moment of your life. Remember God in every moment. Obey the teachings of the Guru. You will be happy in this world and in the next world."

All kings, emperors and rulers are under God's power. Recite the Name of God and become satisfied. Be around the saints and find God within.

Religion, Faith, Spirituality / Bhai Pheru Jee - Good Masand
« on: September 07, 2010, 08:14:34 AM »
WAHEGURU JI KA KHALSA WAHEGURU JI KI FATEH

Bhai Pheru Jee - Good Masand - from tapoban.org

Masands who were appointed by the third Guru, Guru Amardas jee were very chardi kala wale Gursikh but by the time Guru Gobind Singh jee took the Guruship from Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib, the masands got corrupted very badly.

The masands who were appointed to preach Gursikhee, collect Daswand and provide social, political and religious leadership to the Sikhs who lived in far off lands, totally forgot their duties and started extorting money from people, and did some very bad things like adultry and rape etc. They made the people quiet by scaring them with curses and other means. In short they had become scoundrels from saints.

When Guru Gobind Singh jee heard all this he got very upset. As you all know that he was very strict on maryada. He ordered his Khalsa to make the masands appear in front of him. He further ordered his Singhs to bring them holding them by their beards. The Singhs heard this and heeded by dragging and abducting the masands and made them appear before Guru Sahib.

In those days the masand of Lahore was Bhai Pheru jee who apart from being the true masand was a Gursikh of high spritual stages. When the Singhs came to get him they could not dare to put their hands on the beard of such a great Gursikh. At this Bhai Pheru jee begged them to hold him by the beard but the Singhs could not do it. Then Bhai Sahib jee held his beard in his own hand and came in the darbar of king of kings Guru Gobind Singh jee.

When Guru Gobind Singh jee saw Bhai Pheru coming, he got bairaag. He got up from his Singhaasan (throne) and embraced Bhai Pheru jee and said that the order of holding the masands by beard was not for the Gursikhs like you. Such is the humility of Gursikhs. Bhai Pheru jee took amrit and got even more respect now after appearing in the Guru darbar.

Following are some points we learn from this saakhi:

1) Gursikhs keep humility and never ever show pride in the darbar of Guru. What is the being (aukaat) of a human. If Guru takes away the sight of mercy from an individual, a person becomes dust in two seconds.

2) People who jap the naam of Vaheguru and do Bhagti have so much noor/pratap/rohb/grace on their face that no one can even look at them. The Singhs who went to catch Bhai Pheru jee could not even talk rudely to him let alone grabbing him by the beard.

« on: September 06, 2010, 11:47:46 PM »
'Hukamnama' is a Persian word meaning a royal decree. In the Sikh context this is considered the Guru's word's of wisdom for the day. Sri Guru Granth Sahib is opened randomly to any page and the shabad on that page becomes the days Hukam (command). This practice dates back to the time when Sri Guru Granth Sahib was first installed in the Golden Temple in 1604. The daily Hukamnama presented here comes from Sri Guru Granth Sahib at The Golden Temple in Amritsar.

Children Of God

A blessed GurSikh was
once asking me to
imagine that I was with my
dad and someone grabbed
dad by the throat then
started verbally abusing him, what would I do?.
Obviously I'd defend him.
In the same way whenever
someone says something
wrong or against
Waheguru jee or SatGuru jee then that person must
be corrected there and
then by the children of
God - the Bhagats. Now I understand why this
blessed GurSikh always
stands and corrects
anyone who says
something wrong, wereas
I would just let them get away with it and ignore it. For example the other
day, a man at the
Gurdwara was saying 'O
God does everything, he
makes one person do bad
things and another person do good deeds. Even a
leaf can't move unless
God wants it to.' Then he
said, `thinking of these
things makes my mind go
bad!' (Meaning he'd prefer to carry on talking about
worldly things rather than
God, and blame God for
him not being that
religiously inclined!). The
blessed Gursikh said, `God loves every single
creature and wants the
best for each of them. God
is Good and wants
everyone to be good. So
how can someone who is good ever make anyone
do something bad?' He continued, `It's
impossible. But man is
such a fool that he doesn't
accept that his bad actions
are his own doing, but
blames God. Blaming God, insulting God,
refusing to believe in God
etc he puts up a barrier
between himself and
Waheguru ji. This barrier
blocks out the love and virtues which are
continuously pouring over
us. Guru Nanak Dev jee
taught us to sing praises
of Waheguru ji so the
blessings carry on showering down.' It is the duty of the
children of God to always
defend the Truth.

Religion, Faith, Spirituality / Nice cup of Tea
« on: September 06, 2010, 10:56:43 PM »
Here's a little Zen story. A young
man comes to see the master at
his house, and says 'O great wise
one, take me on as your disciple
so that I too may obtain the
perfect state'. The Master said 'Hello Sonny-boy - forget all that
nonsense - while you're here
pour some more tea in my cup -
cheers mate' (In this version of
the story the Master is a
Londoner!) The disheartend young man went
to the table and was about to
pour the tea from the kettle into
the Master's cup when he said,
'O master your cup is already
full', 'the Master said carry on pouring , the lad did as he was
told and watched the tea
overflow and wet the table and
the floor, the man said
frantically,'O Master the tea is
spilling everywhere shall I stop?' The Master said to the man, 'Why
do you keep questioning what I
tell you to do? The cup was
already full and any extra tea
could not remain in it. You too
are full of your own wisdom and what I teach you will not stay
inside. If you want to learn the
true ways then first empty
yourself and come here ready to
be filled.' Same with the Guru jee, he's told
us to do something. We may
question it think it's pointless like
the man spilling the tea, but the
real point of it is that everytime
we do it we show Guru ji we are his slave and obey his orders and
not our man-mat. Guru ji says
'Rehat pyaree muj ko Sikh
nahee' Following the Guru's
Code is more important to the
Guru than the Sikh. So if the Guru's tell us to do it,
then as NIKE would say 'JUST
DO IT!' and prove to Guru ji you
are ready to be filled with divine
knowledge.
