WAHEGURU JI KA KHALSA WAHEGURU JI KI FATEH

If you think you
are beaten, you are;
If you think you
dare not, you don't;

If you'd like to win,
but think you'll
lose, you're lost.

For out in the world
we find success begins
with a person's faith;

It's all in the
state of mind.

Life's battle
don't always go
to the stronger
or faster hand;
They go to the one
who trusts in God
and always thinks

"I can."

WAHEGURU JI KA KHALSA WAHEGURU JI KI FATEH

This is an amazing sakhi about Satguru Sri Guru Har Rai Sahib Ji, the King of Kings and the Saint of Saints and his beloved sikh, Bhai Gonda that the gyani was telling the sangat about last Sunday.

A devout Sikh called Bhai Gonda abode with Satguru Sri Guru Har Rai Sahib Ji Maharaj. He was a saint in thought, word and deed. Guru Ji was very much pleased with his sincere devotion and said, 'Bhai Gonda, go to Kabul, instruct Sikhs over there in the worship of the true name and preach the faith of Guru Nanak Dev Ji. Feed holy men and pilgrims with the offerings that you recieve, and send what remains for the maintenance of my kitchen. These are your duties, and I am confident that you will perform them'.

Although Kabul was a foreign country and there was danger from Muslim bigotry in residing there, yet Gonda cheerfully accepted the task which was given to him by his beloved Guru. On arriving in Kabul he built a Gurudwara, and carried out all Guru Jis instructions. In other respects the following lines of Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji Maharaj which he was accustomed to repeat, served him as a guide:

Meditate in your heart on the Guru's image;
Regale your mind with the Guru's word and spell,
Put the Guru's feet into your heart,
And ever bow to the Guru, the Supreme Being.

One day while Bhai Gonda was repeating Japji Sahib, he thought he was clinging onto Guru Jis feet. He was in such a state of abstraction that he became quite unconscious. He grew as absorbed in the sight of Guru Ji as a drop of rain in the ocean.

All knowing Guru Ji, knew what was passing in Gonda's mind, and sat firmly on his throne keeping his feet together. When dinner was annouced, as usual at mid-day, he made no response. When the annoucement was repeated about an hour afterwards, he still remained silent. A third time after a longer interval dinner was annouced and the sevadaars asked permission to serve it, however, still Guru Ji did not speak.

When several sikhs were on the point of making a representation to him, he broke his silence and said, 'My Brothers and Sisters, Bhai Gonda is in Kabul. He is in thought, word and deed, a sikh of the Guru. Today he has clasped my feet. How can I withdraw them from him? And how can I go and take my dinner until he lets go of my feet? I am therefore waiting until the conclusion of his meditation and obeisance.'

Bhai Gonda did not awake from his trance, before twilight, and it was only then that Guru Ji felt free to take his repast.

Religion, Faith, Spirituality / The Emperors seed

WAHEGURU JI KA KHALSA WAHEGURU JI KI FATEH

What you plant now, It will determine what you will reap tomorrow, The seeds you now scatter, Will make life worse or better, your life or the ones who will come after. Yes, someday, you will enjoy the fruits, or you will pay for the choices you plant today......with this in mind, please take the time to read the following story

An emperor in the Far East was growing old and knew it was time to choose his successor. Instead of choosing one of his assistants or his children, he decided something different. He called young people in the kingdom together one day. He said, "It is time for me to step down and choose the next emperor. I have decided to choose one of you."

The kids were shocked! But the emperor continued. "I am going to give each one of you a seed today. One very special seed. I want you to plant the seed, water it and come back here after one year from today with what you have grown from this one seed. I will then judge the plants that you bring, and the one I choose will be the next emperor!"

One boy named Ling was there that day and he, like the others, received a seed. He went home and excitedly told his mother the story. She helped him get a pot and planting soil, and he planted the seed and watered it carefully. Every day he would water it and watch to see if it had grown.

After about three weeks, some of the other youths began to talk about their seeds and the plants that were beginning to grow. Ling kept checking his seed, but nothing ever grew. 3 weeks, 4 weeks, 5 weeks went by. Still nothing. By now, others were talking about their plants but Ling didn't have a plant, and he felt like a failure. Six months went by, still nothing in Ling's pot. He just knew he had killed
his seed.

Everyone else had trees and tall plants, but he had nothing. Ling didn't say anything to his friends, however. He just kept waiting for his seed to grow.

A year finally went by and all the youths of the kingdom brought their plants to the emperor for inspection. Ling told his mother that he wasn't going to take an empty pot. But honest about what happened, Ling felt sick to his stomach, but he knew his mother was right. He took his empty pot to the palace. When Ling arrived, he was amazed at the variety of plants grown by the other youths. They were beautiful in all shapes and sizes. Ling put his empty pot on the floor and many of the other kinds laughed at him. A few felt sorry for him and just said, "Hey nice
try."

When the emperor arrived, he surveyed the room and greeted the young people. Ling just tried to hide in the back. "What great plants, trees and flowers you have grown," said the emperor. "Today, one of you will be appointed the next emperor!" All of a sudden, the emperor spotted Ling at the back of the room with his empty pot. He ordered his guards to bring him to the front. Ling was terrified. "The emperor knows I'm a failure! Maybe he will have me killed!"

When Ling got to the front, the Emperor asked his name. "My name is Ling," he replied. All the kids were laughing and making fun of him. The emperor asked everyone to quiet down. He looked at Ling, and then announced to the crowd, "Behold your new emperor! His name is Ling!" Ling couldn't believe it. Ling couldn't even grow his seed. How could he be the new emperor?

Then the emperor said, "One year ago today, I gave everyone here a seed. I told you to take the seed, plant it, water it, and bring it back to me today. But I gave you all boiled seeds, which would not grow. All of you, except Ling, have brought me trees and plants and flowers. When you found that the seed would not grow, you substituted another seed for the one I gave you. Ling was the only one with the courage and honesty to bring me a pot with my seed in it. Therefore, he is the one who will be the new emperor!"

If you plant honesty, you will reap trust.
If you plant goodness, you will reap friends.
If you plant humility, you will reap greatness.
If you plant perseverance, you will reap victory.
If you plant consideration, you will reap harmony.
If you plant hard work, you will reap success.
If you plant forgiveness, you will reap reconciliation.
If you plant openness, you will reap intimacy.
If you plant patience, you will reap improvements.
If you plant faith, you will reap miracles.

But
If you plant dishonesty, you will reap distrust.
If you plant selfishness, you will reap loneliness.
If you plant pride, you will reap destruction.
If you plant envy, you will reap trouble.
If you plant laziness, you will reap stagnation.
If you plant bitterness, you will reap isolation.
If you plant greed, you will reap loss.
If you plant gossip, you will reap enemies.
If you plant worries, you will reap wrinkles.
If you plant sin, you will reap guilt.

WAHEGURU JI KA KHALSA WAHEGURU JI KI FATEH

Guru Amar Das laid the foundation of a Baoli (a well with descending steps) at Goindwal in 1559. All Sikhs joined in the work of digging the Baoli. There was great activity throughout the construction of the Baoli.

After digging very deep they struck a large stone which hindered any further progress. The Guru asked the Sikhs if there was any one who would be courageous to drive a peg into the base to remove the obstruction. He did, however, warn that the operation involved great danger because if the person could not avert the gush of the water, he might be drowned. At this, Manak Chand of Vairowal, who was married to a niece of the Guru, offered his services. This was the same Manak Chand whose parents had been blessed by Guru Nanak.

Manak Chand, invoking God's name and through the grace of the Guru, was able to wedge through the stone and the stream of water immediately filled the Baoli. He was overtaken by the gush of the water. He almost drowned but by the grace of the Guru, he came to the top from where he was taken out and revived. Therefore, he was called 'Marjiwra' (revived after death).

The Baoli yielded sweet drinking water. The Sikhs rejoiced at the successful completion of their labor. There are eighty-four steps reaching down the Baoli. It is believed that this number eighty-four stands for the eighty-four million types of species which inhabit this earth and through which one must progress in order to take birth as a human.

VAHEGURU JI KA KHALSA VAHEGURU JI KI FATEH

One day, a poor boy who was selling goods from door to door to pay his way through school, found he had only one thin dime left, and he was hungry.

He decided he would ask for a meal at the next house. However, he lost his nerve when a lovely young woman opened the door.

Instead of a meal he asked for a drink of water. She thought he looked hungry so brought him a large glass of milk. He drank it slowly, and then asked, "How much do I owe you?"

You don't owe me anything," she replied. "Mother has taught us never to accept pay for a kindness."

He said..... "Then I thank you from my heart."

As Howard Kelly left that house, he not only felt stronger physically, but his faith in God and man was strong also. He had been ready to give up and quit.

Many year's later that same young woman became critically ill. The local doctors were baffled. They finally sent her to the big city, where they called in specialists to study her rare disease. Dr. Howard Kelly was called in for the consultation. When he heard the name of the town she came from, a strange light filled his eyes. Immediately he rose and went down the hall of the hospital to her room. Dressed in his doctor's gown he went in to see her. He recognized her at once.

He went back to the consultation room determined to do his best to save her life. From that day he gave special attention to her case. After a long struggle, the battle was won.

Dr. Kelly requested the business office to pass the final bill to him for approval. He looked at it, then wrote something on the edge and the bill was sent to her room. She feared to open it, for she was sure it would take the rest of her life to pay for it all.

Finally she looked, and something caught her attention on the side of the bill. She read these
words..... "Paid in full with one glass of milk" Dr. Howard Kelly.

Tears of joy flooded her eyes as her happy heart prayed: "Thank You, God, that Your love has spread broad through human hearts and hands."

There's a saying which goes something like this:

Bread cast on the waters comes back to you. The good deed you do today may benefit you or someone you love at the least expected time. If you never see the deed again at least you will have made the world a better place
-
And, after all, isn't that what life is all about?

WAHEGURU JI KA KHALSA WAHEGURU JI KI FATEH

When the great Sufi mystic, Hasan, was dying, somebody asked "Hasan, who was your master?"

He said, "I had thousands of masters. If I just relate their names it will take months, years and it is too late. But three masters I will certainly tell you about.

One was a thief. Once I got lost in the desert, and when I reached a village it was very late, everything was closed. But at last I found one man who was trying to make a hole in t he wall of a house. I asked him where I could stay and he said 'At this time of night it will be difficult, but you can say with me - if you can stay with a thief'

And the man was so beautiful. I stayed for one month! And each night he would say to me, 'Now I am going to my work. You rest, you pray.' When he came back I would ask 'Could you get anything?' He would say, 'Not tonight. But tomorrow I will try again, God willing.' He was never in a state of hopelessness, he was always happy.

When I was meditating and meditating for years on end and nothing was happening, many times the moment came when I was so desperate, so hopeless, that I thought to stop all this nonsense. And suddenly I would remember the thief who would say every night, 'God willing, tomorrow it is going to happen.'

And my second master was a dog. I was going to the river, thirsty and a dog came. He was also thirsty. He looked into the river, he saw another dog there -- his own image -- and became afraid. He would bard and run away, but his thirst was so much that he would come back. Finally, despite his fear, he just jumped into the water, and the image disappeared. And I knew that a message had come to me from God: one has to jump in spite of all fears.

And the third master was a small child. I entered a town and a child was carrying a lit candle. he was going to the mosque to put the candle there.

'Just joking,' I asked the boy, 'Have you lit the candle yourself?' He said, 'Yes sir.' And I asked, 'There was a moment when the candle was unlit, then there was a moment when the candle was lit. Can you show me the source from which the light came?'

And the boy laughed, blew out the candle, and said, 'Now you have seen the light going. Where has it gone? You will tell me!'

My ego was shattered, my whole knowledge was shattered. And that moment I felt my own stupidity. Since then I dropped all my knowledgeability.

It is true that I had no master. That does not mean that I was not a disciple -- I accepted the whole existence as my master. My Disciplehood was a greater involvement than yours is. I trusted the clouds, the trees. I trusted existence as such. I had no master because I had millions of masters I learned from every possible source. To be a disciple is a must on the path. What does it mean to be a disciple? It means to be able to learn. to be available to learn to be vulnerable to existence. With a master you start learning to learn.

The master is a swimming pool where you can learn how to swim. Once you have learned, all the oceans are yours."

WAHEGURU JI KA KHALSA WAHEGURU JI KI FATEH

I love this story posted by gurpreet singh on waheguroo forums.

It had been 3 days, long hot summer days. Sukh Nidhaan Singh was close to dyeing, as he lay there in a wooden cage on a cart drawn by two horses.

He had been captured by the mughal forces near the jungles of afhgan. He hadn't slept or eaten properly for days so he was weak when he was pounced upon by the mughal soldiers. he had put up a good fight and even killed a few of them, but he was injured and he was overpowered and captured. The mughal soldiers had tied him upside down from a tree and beaten him severely. the mughal Soldiers thought that instead of killing him they would take him to their Nawaab, he would be pleased with the fine specimen of Sikh warrior they had caught. They thought it would be a good challenge to try and convert this Kafir.

It had been 5 months of travelling since Sukh nidhaan had seen another Sikh. the last time was 5 months ago he met a Sikh messenger travelling to take news to Baba Deep Singh ji. When he met the gursikh he fell to the floor and cried at the gursikhs feet. the gursikh embraced him and comforted him. the gursikh had to leave immediately as his message was of great urgency. Sukh Nidhaan Singh told him that he was travelling towards Amritsaar to meet his brothers once again. they both said there fateh! and departed. and that was five months ago... and how he longed to be with his family of Sikhs once again.

he remembered the times when he was together with his band of fellow Sikh Warriors. they were a band of Sikh warriors who had been given the duty to uproot certain mughal bases and strongholds to damage the great mughal force. they were given the task of also rescuing any kidnapped women taken as slaves by the mughals and returning them to their villages. He was now the last of his Jatha and now, even he had been caught and was being taken to the nawaab of this District.

He lay in the small cage barely big enough to sit in and he was dyeing slowly. the energy had been sucked from him by the beatings and the immense sun. Suddenly he was awoken as water splashed onto his face. A mughal Soldier on horseback trotting alongside the carriage laughed and drank some water form his pouch and spat at Sukh Nidhaan Singh once again.

"Not long to go now.... you DOG!" the mughal laughed again at Sukh Nidhaan Singh.

Another mughal ahead shouted "We're almost there I can see the tower from here"

two other mughal soldiers pulled up alongside the moving carriage on horseback from behind and they mocked Sukh nidhaan Singh;

"HaHa! you'd better be ready, soon, you will have the honour of becoming one of US! and not a dog like your kind"

Sukh Nidhaan Singh stared at the soldier fiercely, and as he struggled "Never...ever.. I will die... first" the mughals continued to mock him...

"yes we've caught many of your kind, and most of them chose the wealth and the riches. after a few beatings they always come round to OUR way of thinking"

"Yes! even last month there was that big one, one of your Sikhs, he was beaten in public and after he was begging to be accepted by us."

"Yes countless Sikh have changed, and they now live in luxury with good homes and women, a big reward awaits you if you make the right decision.

Sukh Nidhaan Singh was hurt at the thought of his Sikh brothers giving up and betraying their Guru and the Khalsa. It seriously damaged his esteem and he started to wonder.. if he had the strength to keep his love for Gurujee until death... if so many had given up.. then what would become of him.. Who was he? was he any different.... He pondered on his situation and the anxiety he felt deeply as he heard the mughals laughing and telling stories of how many Sikhs had been converted and now served the mughal empire.

As he looked into the distance along the long rough road, he saw fields and field of flowers in the distance, he wondered what place this was. his eyes were to weak and damaged to see properly. But he could make out the many fields stretching into the vast horizon. he lay back in the cage and wondered about his Sikh brothers and what would become of him and he made a plea to Satguru...

"Oh Guru! teacher of truth. great warrior from the heavens.. I know now that my end is near. Please Gurujee, PLEASE! bless me with the courage to uphold justice and dharam to the end. May I Die but never let go of your hand. You are my mighty guardian and now Satguru I ask of you, please bless me with the strength and valour to persevere to the end and die a noble death but never give up my beloved Sikhi and the hair on my head. And Satgurujee Dyaal! please bless me with the darshan of gursikhs once again, my eyes are thirsting for the vision of my beloved Khalsa warriors, my family the Khalsa" And at that he lay back lifeless in his cage. With Gods name on his Mind... he repeated again and again... Vaaahegrooohhh.... vaaaahegroohhh... Vaaahegroohh..... vaaahegroohhh...." ...A few minutes and he lost himself in meditation.

Suddenly!! the cart jolted and Sukh Nidhaan Singh ji was awoken from his lazy meditation. He looked out into the fields and saw the Flowers. He couldn't believe his eyes... he sat upright and he looked in amazement! He could not contain the emotion and the tears started to pour from his eyes.... every single pore on his body stood to attention... and he felt them shiver..... through his soul....

THE FLOWERS.. he had seen were not flowers... but they were fields and fields of Spears stuck into the ground... ..and on each spear he saw the Head of a Khalsa Warrior. Some scalped, some beaten, some without the eyes, some burnt, some boiled.. and some he recognised.... alas. he had the darshan of the khalsa once again.. and the sight was too beautiful.... there ware fields and fields of Gursikhs heads on Spears as far as he could see into the distance... the tears he could not contain....

The mughals thought that this site would break Sukh Nidhaan Singh down... but Sukh Nidhaan Singh Sat upright in the cage with a firm look of Strength and nobility on his face... he thought he should show a brave face to his Sikh brothers.... the Emotion powerful... he felt his spirits rise to the skies.. his strength came back.

He Was so proud of these great warriors, his brothers the, KHALSA, They had dies but not given up their Love for Sikhi, Truth and justice. They had not wavered in the face of torture... and had kept their faith till the end. this Gave him strength and Courage and he thought to himself. "I was a fool to even doubt for a second, that my true khalsa would give up and lose. they fought till the end and maintained there principles." he smiled and wiped away the tears and out of joy he let out the war cry of the Khalsa, to pay homage to the great martyrs.

"SAT SREEEE AKAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLL!!!!!!!"

GUR BAR AKAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLL!!!!!!

DEGH TEGH FATEH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sukh Nidhaan Singh over the few coming days was offered many pleasures and riches and he was also tortured and beaten terribly. but at every moment he remembered the flowers in the fields... IT gave him Strength.

He was tortured severely and on the third day when the mughals had given up , they left him to die a painful slow death as they tied him to a tree and left him to die in the sunlight overlooking the fields. bruised, battered and barely alive, Sukh Nidhaan Singh lifted his head and again he saw the fields. He smiled and welcomed Death. The pain was immense but he knew that it was worth it, as he had beaten the mughals. they could kill him but they could not take away his faith.

As hours went by Sukh Nidhaan Singh continued to meditate on the lords name. He looked out into the fields to his khalsa one last time... and he saw in the distance a figure walking through fields. He saw that it was a Khalsa Warrior in blue dress decked with weapons. as the figure slowly came closer he saw that the warrior was approaching each spear and kissing the forehead of each shaheed. As he came closer Sukh Nidhaan Singh ji saw from a distance that it was Guru Gobind Singh ji himself.

He remembered that the Sikhs were like flowers and when they reached their most beautiful form, Gurujee would come to pick the flowers as shaheeds - martyrs.

WAHEGURU JI KA KHALSA WAHEGURU JI KI FATEH

Bibi Ranjeet Kaur - Khalsa Spy

The wild animals were howling in the nearby jungle, the wind was biting Ranjeet Kaur’s face, she wrapped her midnight-blue shawl around a little tighter. Nothing to be afraid of, she quietly carried on repeating ‘Vaahi-guroo, Vaahi-guroo’ in time to her steps and Guru Gobind Singh jee’s glove of spiritual love completely protected her. She looked through the trees at the magnificent setting sun, for a moment she forgot all about the war and was lost in the magic and mystery of the Creative Being - Karta Purakh. She felt as beautiful as a blossoming flower radiating love and life in all directions.

-"‘Vaahi-Guroo Jee Ka Khalsa, Vaahi-Guroo Jee Kee Fateh! Ranjeet Kaur Bhain Jee (sister)",

Ranjit Kaur quickly turned around and saw a young Khalsa warrior dressed in blue-battle dress, wearing a long curved sword down his left side, chain-mail armour across his chest and a three metal discus’s around his blue pointed turban.

-"Vaahi-Guroo Jee Ka Khalsa, Vaahi-Guroo Jee Kee Fateh! GurMukh Singh Jee. Why are you out so late?",

-"Well I was about to ask you the same thing Bhain jee (sister), you know how dangerous it is for a woman to be out her alone while there are Turkish Soldiers patrolling the area. So Bhain Jee you better have a damn good excuse, otherwise you’re going back with me."

- “Veer jee (brother), our Jathedar (leader) has asked me to fetch some important news from the SarPanch (village chief) and anyway you’re only 11 so you better run back to the Khalsa camp.”

-”Bhain jee, I can’t believe he sent you alone. You know the War for our Independence is at it’s peak and there’s trouble around every corner. Look, I’ve got an idea - it’s safer for you to go back to the lake and rejoin the Khalsa Army and I will go in your place.” -”Why do you think it’s any safer for you to go, GurMukh Singh?” -”Bhain jee, it will be dark soon and I don’t think it’s right for a woman to go anywhere alone. I am a Khalsa Warrior, I carry 5 weapons and I am prepared to die fighting. I want people to tell stories about me and how brave Bhai GurMukh Singh was.”

Just then a bat came flying out of the dark trees directly towards Bhai GurMukh Singh, he didn’t know what was attacking him and screaming loudly he covered his face with his hands!

Ranjit Kaur burst out laughing and said “Veer jee, I too have been blessed with Guru’s immortal "khande-batte-da-amrit" (amrit = nectar of immortality) . I too carry a long sword over my blue battle-dress and wear a warrior’s turban. Guru Gobind Singh Jee is always with me. But you my younger brother have much to learn about ego and you are probably at more risk than me! Besides, the SarPanch (village headman) will not give anyone except me the strategic papers. Furthermore, the Jathedar stressed that I go. So my dear little brother, you better ran all the way home otherwise I’m going to grab you by the ear, drag you home and after the Khalsa has finished their evening prayers, I’m going to tell them the story of the great Bhai GurMukh Singh and the black bat!”

“Okay, you win , but be careful.” Saying this Gurmukh Singh ran down the path towards the lake while Ranjit Kaur went on with her journey towards the village.

Gurmukh Singh’s fears were not unfounded. Small bands of Turkish soldiers were wandering around the lake seeking information on Sikhs. Every Sikh was aware of this. However, it did not deter Ranjit Kaur. She fearlessly went on her way to the village. She had absolute faith in the strength of her Guru’s amrit and blessed sword.

Ranjit Kaur reached the SarPanch’s house. The women came out and hugged her, they hadn’t seen her for some time. It was getting late and the women insisted that she spent the night with them. Remembering what GurMukh Singh had said she agreed, it would be safer to travel during the day and Jathedar had given her permission to spend the night. The SarPanch took her to a private room and handed over the Strategic Papers, what she read spelled disaster for the Khalsa. She got up at once and covering herself with her shawl she headed back to the Kahnuwaan lake, the women tried to make her stay saying save your self. But Ranjit Kaur’s life was not worth anything without her Khalsa family.

A large number of Ahmed Shah Abdalee’s troops were on their way from Lahore to seize Kahnuwaan and these strategic papers contained orders to SarPanch to help the troops. Thousands of Khalsa lives were at stake and getting the information back to her Jathedar was foremost on her mind.

By now it was midnight. The skies were clear and the moonlight lit up the earth. In this calm and still atmosphere, Ranjit Kaur reached the outskirts of the quiet village and walked as fast as possible towards the lake. She had about 3 miles to cover, she increased her pace and marched with determination through the sounds of howling animals. She quietly carried on repeating ‘Vaahi-guroo, Vaahi-guroo’ in time to her footsteps as she always did and felt Guru Gobind Singh jee’s spiritual glove encase her.

Two Turkish soldiers with swords in their waist-bands, rode past her left side. She fearlessly looked at the soldiers and underneath her shawl she grabbed the handle of her sword, just in case. The heavenly moonlight glowed from Ranjit Kaur’s angelic face and intensified her beauty. The soldiers suddenly pulled their horses across her path and quickly dismounting they tried to grab her hands. She darted away with lightening speed and threateningly said “They’ll be trouble if you touch me!”, she continued aggressively, ‘Who are you and what do you want?”

-”We are commanders of the royal forces” said the first soldier.

-”Then what business do you have with me?” said Ranjit Kaur.

Without answering, the second soldier loudly demanded “Who are you? And where are you wandering to at this time of night?”

-”Who ever I may be, you have no right to question me.” Saying this Ranjit Kaur tried to walk past them at a fast pace.

The first soldier quickly moved to block her way once again and said, “we have orders to find out where the Sikhs are hiding. You look like a Sikh so until you explain what you are doing we aren’t going to let you go anywhere.”

-”That’s right, I am a Sikh, what are you going to do about it?”

“Then consider yourself under arrest,” said the first soldier, then he looked at the other one and said , “Khan Sahib, I think you better grab her and put her on your horse, because I dont know what I’ll do if I get to close to her.”

Both looked at Ranjit Kaur’s face and then looked at each other and started laughing. Such overtures angered Ranjit Kaur. She started looking at them like a hunter at its’ prey. Her eyes were red with anger.

There was a brief silence before Khan Sahib calmly said, “Beautiful lady, we have been sent to find the whereabouts of Sikhs. However, we are not animals. We are human. We too have pumping hearts in our chest. What kind of heart would it be that does not worship a beautiful angel like you.”

Both men were intoxicated with Ranjit Kaur’s beauty. A mere glimpse of her face had injected lustful insanity into them. Ranjit Kaur stared at their faces but remained silent. Upon completion of his sentence, the other soldier continued, “Beloved, what are you going to get from the wild Sikhs. Come with us. In Allah’s oath we shall make you our Begum (wife). You can wear silk and eat whatever you like. You can even choose which one of us you want to marry!”

Ranjit Kaur still continued to silently stare at the soldiers. She had made her decision to continue or to die fighting. But her silence and non-responsiveness was misinterpreted by the men. Khan Sahib tried to grab her wrist, saying, “Come, sit on my horse. It is getting late my love.”

Ranjit Kaur moved swiftly, taking two steps backward she drew her sword from under her shawl and reflecting the moonlight it flashed like lightening . She shouted “ If you come any closer I wont be responsible for what happens!”

The soldiers burst out laughing. Khan Sahib said, “Angel drawing a sword! That’s a first!”

The other soldier spoke “Isn’t she beautiful when she’s angry?”

This was the first time Khan Sahib had seen a woman protect her honour like a lioness, but she was still only a weak woman so he tried to grab her with his outstretched arms. A flashing sword dazzled him and he screamed in agony as his left hand dropped to the ground.

Having been bitten by the lioness the soldiers drew their swords and charged towards her. Ranjit Kaur wasn’t sitting idle wearing bangles, she lunged forward at Khan Sahib again and cut off his sword hand. He retreated squirming in pain.

The other soldier was a skilled swordsman. His continuous attacks inflicted several wounds to Ranjit Kaur. Blood covered her whole face. Exhaustion was setting in by now. Suddenly, the strength of Guru’s amrit injected so much courage into her, that she forgot all about her wounds and pains. Yelling the battle cry Jaekara, “JO BOLAY SO NIHAL, SAT SREE AKAL,” her sword moved with such force that the soldier’s head dropped to the ground and bounced like a ball. His body fell in a heap next to it.

Ranjit Kaur quickly looked around for Khan Sahib, but he had escaped without trace. Totally exhausted she still managed to search the heaped body and found several papers in the dead soldier’s pockets. Seizing them, she mounted his horse and rode to the Kahnuwaan lake. As she approached the camp she mustered up every last ounce of energy and yelled ‘JATHEDAR JEE! JATHEDAR JEE!’. The Jathedar, several Khalsa Warriors and little GurMukh Singh came running out to meet her, seeing her blood red face and exhausted condition they carried her inside while little GurMukh Singh started crying. Her sisters wiped her face and cleaned her wounds while she searched around her clothing and handed the papers over to the Jathedar. He was amazed to find full details of the Turk’s battle-plans. Ranjit Kaur was honoured greatly by the Khalsa, Guru Gobind Singh Jee’s infinite and unparalleled grace had given her the courage to fight her attackers and save her Khalsa family from a bloody massacre.

News of Ranjit Kaur’s courage spread through out the Khalsa Panth. She is known as the “Brave Daughter of the Guru”.

WAHEGURU JI KA KHALSA WAHEGURU JI KI FATEH

The green Thaeri Hills were soaked in blood. The powerful Pathan Army defended the hill top against a small troop of fearless Akalee soldiers. The Pathan Army heavily outnumbered the bravest battalion of the Khalsa Army, but these warrior lions of Guru Gobind Singh did not lose faith. United, like the waves in the ocean, by their deep blue battle-dress and turbans, they fought against all the odds and faced the rain of enemy bullets, stones, and arrows. Hacking their way through treachorous terrain, they hammered their way up the hill.

Time was running out for the Akalees, Maharaja Ranjit Singh hadn't arrived with reinforcements wereas the Pathans had won the support of thousands of local muslims by distributing pamphlets that declared this battle as a war against Islam - Jihad. The Akalees belonged to Akal, the Immortal God, and with Akal on their side who should they be afraid of? Being outnumbered didn't scare them, Guu Gobind Singh Jee had transformed them with his `khanda-batta da amrit' - the initiation amrit-nectar prepared in the indestructable iron batta-bowl and stirred by the most awesome of weapons - the double-edged Khanda sword. The words of their Guru father rang in their ears `I will make one fight against 125,000, then and only then can I be called Gobind Singh!'. The Akalees belonged to Akal, they fought for their Guru's honour and their only hope in life was to die fighting courageously on the battle-field.

The future of the Sikh Empire, the Khalsa Raaj, depended on this battle. The Akalees marched forward led by the courageous warrior Akalee Phoola Singh , the sun reflected like bolts of lightning from the sharp bladed discus-like chakr-weapons going around his mountain peaked turban. Raising his sword his thundering voice gave power to the battle cry jaekara - `JO BAWLEH SO NIHAL..', (Whoever speaks it Will be Joyous..). Every single Akalee Lion roared the response `SAT SREE AKAL' (Akal Is True!). The Akalee's spirits rose, new life was injected into them with each jaekara. They faced the Pathans with rejuvenated spirits, just seeing the fire in the Akalee's eyes was enough to send the Pathans running in all directions. Advancing into an almost deserted battlefield the Akalees had captured the hill top against all the odds.

But then, from out of nowhere, bullets and arrows started raining down on the Akalees, the Pathans had hidden in hill-caves and now charged out. Surrounding the Akalees they bombarded them with bullets and arrows. Akalee Phoola Singh took a bullet in the chest and the mighty lion fell. The great warrior Karnail Singh Bania also fell wounded by another bullet. The Akalees wanted to die fighting, but seeing their leader's serious condition they decided it was wiser to retreat. The Pathans chased them down to the foothills.

The wounded were carried for about a mile, they marched passed their ammunition depot and reached the camp hospital. A few young Khalsa women busily nursed the wounded lions. Looking towards the hill they saw the enemy forces charging down like an avalanche. The Khalsa nurses along with the remaining Akalee Warriors, gathered their wounded and once again retreated to a safer location.

The Pathans were exhilarated by the fact that victory was almost in their ruthless hands. They marched triumphantly towards the deserted Akalee Camp with the Islamic battle cry `Allah Hu Akbar' (God is Great). Reaching the undefended depot they desperately needed to find a mountain load of ammunition. Most of their army didn't have rifles and without them they knew they stood no chance against the Khalsa Army re-enforcements that were rapidly riding to the battle-scene. On finding thousands of rifles, their joy had no bounds and the skies reverberated with their war cries - `Allah Hu Akbar'.

Each soldier eagerly seized a weapon, but their hearts sunk down to the lowest depths of hell when they realised there were no bullets. Searching frantically they ripped apart every storage tent and overturned every stack of crates, like thirsty men in the desert they ran in all directions looking for even a tiny clue as to where the metal messengers of death could be, finally Allah was truly merciful and they located crate after crate full to the brim with the finest bullets stuffed full of gunpowder. Once again their joy had no bounds and the valleys echoed with `Allah Hu Akbar'. Surrounded by a sea of ammunition the Pathan Army danced like drunken men waving their new found guns in the air. Without warning, an incredible explosion suddenly shocked the sky and shook the mountains. Flames shot up hundreds of feet into the sky, like an erupting volcano spewing out it's insides with all the force and fury of ten thousand angry gods. Bodies went flying in all directions like fragile rag dolls. Within a blink of an eye, the Pathans dancing heaven had turned them into black logs of charcoal feeding the flames of hell on earth.

By now, the `Lion Of Punjab -Shere Punjab', Maharaja Ranjit Singh, had crossed the Attock river and appeared on the horizon like the the light of the rising sun after a dark and stormy night, the rays of hope reached out in all directions in the form of Khalsa Warrior after Khalsa Warrior. Whether riding on horseback or marching on foot, each battalion was headed by the the flag bearers waving the Khalsa flags high in the sky. They whispered `Waheguru, Waheguru' with each breath, their secret power given to them when they were blessed with `khanda-batta-da-amrit'. General Hari Singh Naluwa commanded them and they rode like the wind, attacking the remaining Pathans with so much power that they ran for their lives like headless chickens. The Khalsa Army claimed complete control of the battlefield. The skies echoed with the battle cry jaekara `JO BAWLEH SO NIHAL..', (Whoever speaks it Will be Joyous..). Every single Khalsa Lion roared the response `SAT SREE AKAL' (Akal Is True!).

Maharaja Ranjit Singh and General Hari Singh Naluwa looked around at the site of death and destruction, smoke was still emitting from burning crates and bodies. Tha Akalee's told Maharaja Ranjit Singh that by some miracle Guru Gobind Singh jee himself had caused the explosion. They all knew that they would have suffered a total wipeout against a fanatical Pathan Army on a religious Jihad armed to the teeth with guns and bullets.

As they wandered around what used to be the camp, Maharaja Ranjit Singh noticed something, quickly dashing to the outskirts he kneeled down. The others followed him and they congregated around the dead body of a fair, innocent, young khalsa woman. She was lying face down on the ground less than 50 feet from the depot and away from the bodies of the Pathans. In her hand she was still tightly clutching a fire-torch!

It was the head nurse, Bibi Prem Kaur. This brave lioness daughter of Guru Gobind Singh Jee had given up her life to save the Khalsa Army from a humiliating defeat. While the other nurses retreated with the wounded Akalees, she had secretly gone to the depot and hidden near the bullet storage. Lighting the ammunition, the blast had blown her body away from the dead Pathans, as if to protect her innocence and honour her sacrifice.

This scene deeply moved Maharaja Ranjit Singh and his eyes were flooding with tears. Addressing her as his daughter, he gently raised her head onto his lap and tenderly wiped her face with his damp handkerchief.

The Khalsa warriors witnessed these scenes with tears rolling down their cheeks, Bibi Prem Kaur had sacrificed her own life so that her brothers would be saved. At her funeral the Khalsa Army band played on and the cannons fired in continuous salute as Maharaja Ranjit Singh and other Officers carried her coffin in a royal procession. Every Khalsa Warrior felt Bibi Prem Kaur's eternal love for Guru Gobind Singh Jee wash over them, with their heads bowed low, they said great, truly great is our father Guru Gobind Singh Jee.

The `khanda-batta-da-amrit' that Guru Gobind Singh jee used to transform the sparrows into hawks, jackals into lions, cowards into Khalsa, had now enabled Bibi Prem Kaur to make the ultimate selfless sacrifice. She was now a martyr that the Khalsa would never forget. By the Guru's infinite and unparalleled grace and kindness she had single-handedly overturned a sure defeat for the Khalsa into an overwhelming victory.

News Khabran / Obama to visit Golden Temple in Nov

Amritsar Diaspora elated; team of officials from US Embassy in Delhi visits shrine to discuss security matters
The Sikh Diaspora is elated over the proposed visit of US President Barack Obama to the Golden Temple in the beginning of November when he tours India. A team of US officials visited the shrine on Wednesday and met government and Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) authorities to take stock of security issues ahead of the visit.

While the officials preferred to keep the visit low key and did not issue any statement, the SGPC functionaries said they discussed the preparedness that is required to be ensured for the “VVIP visit”.

Officials from the US Embassy in Delhi toured the entire Golden Temple complex, noting down every detail of the vast area. They also visited top hospitals and establishments and took stock of emergency services in the city. “They came here to see the preparations that are required to be taken up during the visit,” said SGPC secretary Dalmegh Singh.

In an email message sent to The Indian Express, American Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (AGPC) chief Dr Pritpal Singh said: “The visit has brought joy to all Punjabis settled in the US. The visit will send a goodwill message. As he imbibes liberal traditions, the visit would bring him closer to Eastern traditions.”

SGPC chief Avtar Singh Makkar, meanwhile, said they would raise various issues concerning the Sikhs with Obama during his visit. He especially referred to hate crimes in the US due to “mistaken identity”, saying “Sikhs are often mistaken for Arabs”.

“There are numerous issues to be taken up with him (Obama) and the foremost is the matter pertaining to mistaken identity that has led to crime against Sikhs,” he said.

Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee head Paramjit Singh Sarna, too, welcomed Obama’s decision to visit Amritsar. “He is our respected guest and I am grateful to those NRIs who facilitated his visit to the holy shrine,” he said.

Dr Rajwant Singh, chairman of the Washington-based Sikh Council on Religion and Education, said: “The visit will send goodwill gesture to everybody in South Asia and bring forth the need for more in-depth interfaith understanding.”

How Baba Amar Das Was Converted
Taken from Pr. Satbir Singh's "Aad Sikh tay Aad Sakheeaa(n)"

Bibi Amaro was Guru Angad Dev jee's daughter. It is said that when she was born, it was as if Bhagti (devotion) had itself taken human form and been born in the house of the Guru.

Her voice was very sweet and soft and she had memorised much baaNee. She was married into a family of village Basarkay. Her husband was Guru Amar Das jee's youngest brother, Bhai MaaNak Chand's son, Jasoo.
Bibi jee would rise at amrit vela every day and with great enthusiasm and dedication begin reciting baaNee. Mehma Parkaash (an old Granth) writes that when she would sing baaNee, it was as if nectar would begin to rain down.

One day, a Sadhu visited Baba Amar Das but did not eat anything from him as he did not have a Guru. Baba Amar Das also did not eat that night and lay awake, lost in sadness.

Bibi Amaro rose at amrit vela like normal, bathed and began reciting baaNee. Baba Amar Das was awake and when he heard Bibi jee's beautiful voice, he began to listen with deep focus. He heard to following shabad: "KarNee kaagad man masvaaNee, buraa bhalaa doi laykh paiay. Jio(n) jio(n) kirt chlaay tio(n) chaleeai, to guN naahee ant haray". Meaning: Actions are the paper, and the mind is the ink; good and bad are both recorded upon it. As their past actions drive them, so are they driven. There is no end to Your virtues, Lord. (ang 990)

Hearing this Shabad, Baba jee's mind became pure. The Shabad matched that which Baba jee was feeling in his heart. And it was of course more piercing because it was the Guru's daughter reciting these holy lines of GurbaaNee, and that too at amrit vela with her beautiful voice.

Baba jee from a distance spoke up, "Daughter, I was dead. This amrit-baaNee has entered my ears and I am alive again. My state is exactly like the one described in that shabad. Please take me to the one who's baaNee this is. Please recite that shabad again…"

Bibi Amaro felt shy because Baba Amar Das was equal to her father-in-law. By this time, Bibi jee's mother-in-law Bhago had also awoken and said to Bibi jee, "Daughter, there is no embarassment in reciting this. It is a good deed to do this. One's father and father-in-law are equal. There is no shyness when reciting a shabad."

Bibi Bhago gave her daughter in-law permission to take Baba Amar Das to Khadoor Sahib to meet Guru Angad, but Bibi Amaro said, "How can I go without being called by Guru jee? I have just arrived here in your home now."

Baba Amar Das replied, "Child, please take me. Guru jee will do kirpaa."

Bibi jee then said "As you wish. Next morning I will take you there."

When the next day dawned, Bibi Amaro got ready and set out for Khadoor Sahib with Baba Amar Das. Upon arriving, Bibi jee left Baba jee outside and herself went before Guru jee and bowed. Guru Angad Dev jee looked at his daughter and said, "Child, stop thinking that you have come here without my having called you. You have done well to come. But why have you left the one you brought with you outside? Go and bring him as well."

Bibi jee then went and brought back Baba Amar Das. Guru Angad Dev jee rose and was about to embrace Baba Amar Das as the equal of his daughter's father-in-law but Baba jee fell at Guru jee's feet and said, "Merciful one, I have come here to take the support and sanctuary of your feet".

It was the fruit of Bibi Amaro's rising at Amrit Vela and reciting baaNee that Baba Amar Das came to Khadoor and began his sevaa there and eventually became Guru Amar Das, the strength of the helpless and the support of those with no other hope.

Religion, Faith, Spirituality / Bhai Kaliana Ji
« on: September 22, 2010, 06:59:04 AM »
WAHEGURU JI KA KHALSA WAHEGURU JI KI FATEH

Bhai Kaliana was one of the followers of Satguru Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji Maharaj. When Satguru Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji Maharaj needed money for the Golden Temple, he asked for help from his Sikhs. Kaliana offered help to Satguru Ji and said, "My Lord, I shall go to the hill Rajahs in the North and collect money. I will also preach the Guru's word there." Satguru Ji agreed and Bhai Kaliana set out for Mandi. On reaching there, Kaliana found the place so pleasant that he decided to stay there and tell people about the Guru's way of life. He sent money to the Guru and received permission to stay a little longer.

The king of Mandi and his subjects used to celebrate a special festival of religious worship every year. Everybody in his kingdom was required to join in the celebrations by order. That year the order read - "All the people will keep one day's fast. Nobody will sleep at night. Tomorrow all must go to the temples and break the fast by drinking water in which the idols have been washed. Those who do not obey these orders will be punished by law."

All the people obeyed the king's order. Bhai Kaliana was the only one who did not keep the fast and so did not join in the celebrations. When the king learnt about this, he was extremely angry. At once he gave orders for Kaliana's arrest. So Kaliana was brought before the king. Burning with anger, the king said, "Who are you? What is your religion? Why did you not obey my orders?"

"Sir," said Bhai Kaliana very humbly, "My name is Kaliana. I am a Sikh of the famous Satguru Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji Maharaj, the fifth in the line of the great Satguru Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the king of kings and the saint of all saints. Like all his followers, I recite only hymns in praise of God and have no faith in stone idols which neither see nor hear nor speak. I wonder how a stone can be pleased and what we can gain from it! God is the life within our lives. He is ever merciful to us all. Yet that God you suppose to be a stone. How can God be pleased with you when you regard him as no better than a stone that lies around everywhere and is kicked by our feet."

The king was mad with anger. At once he ordered Kaliana to be put into prison. The next day, Kaliana was again ordered to come and bow down to the idol. But Kaliana refused and said, "My idol is living. He is the great Satguru Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji Maharaj, the king of kings and the saint of saints, the king of holy men. I will bow only to him and to no one else."

Red with anger, the king ordered that one leg of Bhai Kaliana be cut off and that he should be dragged out of the kingdom by the other leg. After giving these orders, however, the king fainted so the punishment was delayed. Doctors came and tried their best to cure the king but it seemed as if he was dead. Some wise men said, "This is all due to the unfair punishment given to the holy stranger. Instead of punishing him, the king should have shown respect to him."

One of the king's officers at once went to the jail and requested Kaliana to come to the king's bedside. Kaliana came and said, "I am very sorry for the king, but I have done nothing to him. I have no power to help him either. All such power lies with God. I can only say prayers and that too, only if you promise to make the king believe in God instead of a stone." The wise men and the ministers standing there promised to do that.

Kaliana stood up, folded his hands, asked the others to join him and prayed to God to save the life of the king. As soon as Kaliana had finished the prayer, the king rose up as strong as before. He bowed to Kaliana and said, "O holy man, please pardon me." Saying this he fell at Kaliana's feet. He then ordered his men to make his horse ready and to tell his queens to dress up quickly. When all was ready he requested Kaliana to lead them all to the Great Satguru Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji Maharaj as quickly as possible.

The king, the queens, and many of his officers, set out to see Satguru Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji Maharaj at Amritsar. On the way, hundreds of other people joined them. Kaliana was leading them and they were all singing hymns in praise of God.

"Did God put aside all other days of the month That He should have been born on the eighth'! Man, led astray by error, utters nonsense. God is not subject to birth and death. Man takes cakes and gives them secretly to an idol. O faithless animal, God is not born, nor does He die. All your sin results from fondling an idol; May the tongue that says 'God entered the womb' be burnt; Nanak's God is everywhere."
(Satguru Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji Maharaj)

"Having found the company of holy men; I have rejected all ideas of duality. There is no enemy and no stranger; Everybody is my friend. Whatever God wills, is all honey to me; This noble instruction I have gained from the holy. One and the same God fills every heart; And it is this presence of the Lord everywhere that Makes Nanak feel jubilant."
(Satguru Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji Maharaj)

WAHEGURU JI KA KHALSA WAHEGURU JI KI FATEH

Once Satguru Sri Guru Amar Das Ji visited Kasur. It was during the summer, and it was very hot. Satguru Ji's sikhs felt very weary. The governor of the city was a Khatri of the Puri tribe. Satguru Ji sent one of his beloved Sikhs to request his permis¬sion to pitch his tent in his garden. The Sikh taking this message hurried towards the governor's house.

He began to knock on the door. The Governor came and opened the door and asked the Sikh what he wanted. The Sikh of Satguru Ji said, 'Governor of Kasur the king of kings, Satguru Sri Guru Amar Das Ji Maharaj was wondering if he and his Sikhs could pitch their tents in your garden?'

The governor replied, ' I know the Guru; only yesterday he lived in Basarka and to-day he is Guru. He has attached to him men of all castes, high and low. They sit in a line and eat with him and with one another. If he choose to be a Guru of outcastes, he can please him¬self, but I will not allow him to approach my dwell¬ing.'

The Sikh pleaded with the Governor and told him how blessed he would be by having the King of the world, stay on his land. But the governor full of pride closed the doors to his house. The Sikh headed back to where Guru Ji and his Sikhs were resting. The Sikh told Satguru Ji what had happened.

Guru Ji on hearing this said, ' My disciples shall one day have sovereign power. A Sikh ruler shall reign here in Kasur, and the descendants of this person who is now governor shall become his servants.'

Satguru Ji, departing from this area and found his way to the hut of a poor Pathan. On seeing Satguru the man arose and said that he was poor, otherwise he would give him suitable entertainment. Guru Ji replied in the words of Satguru Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji Maharaj:—

God can appoint a worm to sovereignty and reduce an army to ashes.

Satguru Ji continued, ' Do God's service, and you shall become the lord of Kasur, but if you become a tyrant you shall die.'

A short time afterwards the governor and his officials in Kasur caused such political disturbance that the Emperor ordered them to be disarmed and expelled, and Pathans appointed in their place. The latter and their descendants continued to govern that part of the Panjab until it was conquered by the lion of panjab, Maharaj Ranjit Singh and the Sikhs.

WAHEGURU JI KA KHALSA WAHEGURU JI KI FATEH

When Siri Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib jee became our ninth Guru, Siri Guru Har Rai jee’s brother Dhir Mal, continued to pose as Guru. The sangat in Punjab was convinced that Siri Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib jee was the ninth Guru, but sangat far from Punjab still was not sure.

For Diwali, Dhir Mal sent invitations to all sangats in India and along with invitation he included a very heavy siropa, made out of expensive zaree material. It seemed very heavy and big. One such package reached sangat of Kabul, Afghanistan. On the other hand Siri Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib jee too sent out hukamnamas to sangat in Kabul to come for Diwali time. Guru Sahib sent a simple cotton siropa for the sangat.

When the sangat in Kabul received two invitations and two siropas, they did not know which one was true. The leader of sangat there was a great Sikh – Bhai Genda jee. This Bhai Genda jee is the same Bhai Genda jee, who had held Siri Guru Har Rai jee, by placing his charan in his heart. Siri Guru Har Rai jee was not able to move, when Bhai Genda jee had done that.

Anyway, Bhai Genda jee suggested that both siropas should be weighed to determine which Guru is the true Guru. The siropa that is heavier would determine the true Guru. Siri Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib jee’s siropa clearly was the lighter one as it was a simple dastar where as the siropa from Dhir Mal was a heavy one with a lot of other stuff like gota in it.

They performed an emotional ardaas in the lotus feet of Siri Guru Nanak Dev jee and requested for guidance. They disclosed their way of determining the true Guru and after the ardaas, when they measured the siropas, Siri Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib jee’s siropa came out much heavier than Dhir Mal’s siropa. The sangat accepted this as a divine signal from Vaheguru and accepted Siri Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib jee as their ninth Guru.

This incident is written in Bansavali as follows:

GUR TEGH BAHADUR DEE NEEVEE||
DHIR MAL DI CHAR ATAARI||
(On the scale, Siri Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib jee’s side hit the ground i.e. went down as it was heavy, while Dhir Mal’s side of the scale got lifted up.)

Waheguru ji ka khalsa waheguru ji ki fateh

Loose translation from a book by Giani Amar Singh jee - by bhai kulbir singh

During the times of Sikhs Misls, the Sikhs were badly disunited. They successfully destroyed the aggressors but now they were fighting amongst themselves. All Sardaars (chieftains) were trying to destroy each other to extend their kingdoms. After the death of Sardar Gurbaksh Singh in a fight with one of the misls, his wife, Sardarni Sada Kaur took over the reins of her misl.

The Singhpuria Misl had great enmity with Sardar Gurbaksh Singh. After his death, his wife Sardarni Sada Kaur like a warrior kept her position fortified thus resulting in the Singhpuriya Misl Sardar becoming her sworn enemy. He always looked for an opportunity to win over Sardarni Sada Kaur. His intelligence agents were always behind Sardarni Sada Kaur to watch her activities.

On the other side Sardarni Sada Kaur was no less vigilant than the Singhpuriya Sardar. She always ensured that she was well-protected and always went out with no less than few hundred soldiers protecting her. The history stands witness to the fact that not only she was able to save her honour and position but she played a leading role in boosting the power of her son-in-law Raja Ranjit Singh. She fought along with Raja Ranjit Singh in all his big battles.

This incident that we are going to narrate is long before she become a relative of Raja Ranjit Singh. Once Sardarni Sada Kaur decided to visit Siri Darbar Sahib – Amritsar Sahib. She took her guards and a small army and reached Siri Amritsar Sahib. At the same time as a coincidence the Singhpuriya Sardar too reached Siri Amritsar Sahib at the same time as Sardarni Sada Kaur. Both had similar aim of visiting Siri Darbar Sahib i.e. to do ishnaan in the sacred sarovar – Ramdas Sarovar and to pay obeisance at Siri Harmandir Sahib.

The Singhpuria Sardar after doing ishnaan went inside Siri Darbar Sahib to matha tek and listen to kirtan. Right at that time, Sardarni Sada Kaur reached the Parkarma of Sarovar and went inside the ladies section to do ishnaan. While she was taking ishnaan (ablutions) her maids were standing outside and the Singhpuria agents realized quickly that Sardarni Sada Kaur was inside the ishnaan porch all alone. The agents whispered in ears about the presence of Sardarni jee and by then the maids standing outside too realized that the Singhpuriya sardaar was here and that his agents had found out that Sardarni Sada Kaur was all by herself and defenceless at Darbar Sahib.

As the agents rushed to inform the Sardar about Sada Kaur being present at Darbar Sahib totally defenceless, the maids dashed inside the ladies area of sarovar to tell Sardarni jee about the possible danger from the Singhpuriya Sardaar.

Sardarni Sada Kaur at that time was in some other mood. When the maids informed her of the Singhpuriya Sardar and the imminent danger from him, Sardarni jee with total faith in Guru Sahib responded, “Look, at this time I am sitting in the heavenly lap of my father Guru Ramdass jee and I am pretty sure that the Singhpuriya sardar will not make the mistake of attacking me in such position. But if he does attack me, then I will not fight and will readily get arrested by him but will not fight back in the premises of Siri Darbar Sahib.”

Then Sardarni told one of her maids to go outside Darbar Sahib and inform her soldiers that they should be prepared for a possible fight outside Darbar Sahib.

After such bold answer, she became oblivious of her surrounding and started doing ishnaan again.

On the other hand, the intelligence agent went to inform the Sardar about Sardarni Sada Kaur being alone and how it was a great opportunity to capture or kill her. The Singhpuriya Sardar was listening to kirtan very keenly. The kirtanees were singing a very bairaagmai shabad that stated the futility of our efforts to collect worldly wealth. Sardaar’s mind had become purified as it was one with shabad.

The soohiya (agent) unaware of the spiritual and mental state of the Sardar, went dashing in Darbar Sahib and even forgot to do matha tek. The only thing in his mind was to get reward for telling the whereabouts of Sardarni Sada Kaur. He did not care about keeping respect of the sangat present there, nor did he realize the message of the shabad being sung. He hurriedly went over to the Sardar and in his ear whispered, “Sardar jee, Rani Sada Kaur at this time is taking ishnaan in the ladies area of the sarovar. She is totally unprotected. This is a great opportunity to kill her or capture her alive”.

Sardar’s mann (mind) at that time was totally engrossed in Gurbani and had become pure. He got upset at the action of the soohiya and how he had not cared about keeping respect of Guru and sangat. He thought if this soohiya was only a soohiya and not a Sikh. The soohiya in the meantime was standing by waiting for the Sardar to respond. The sardar keeping fear of Guru whisperingly said, “Go away from here. You are not fit to stand here in Siri Harmandir Sahib. You did not even care about Guru, Sangat and Siri Harmandir Sahib. You did not care that this was not the right time and place to talk about such lowly thing. You are not a Sikh of Guru. Get away from my eyes”.

Saying this the Sardar came out and ordered one of his soldiers to arrest the soohiya. The sardar came back and started meditating on the shabad of Guru. After some time the Sardar got up and started walking out of Siri Harmandir Sahib.

In the meantime, Sardarni Sada Kaur after finishing her ishnaan, started walking towards Siri Harmandir Sahib. She was standing by Darshani DeoRi and the Sardar came out. Both Sardarni and Sardar were engrossed in baani. There were sworn enemies of each other. When they saw each other, both stopped.

The sardar made the first move. He had Degh (parshaad) in his hands and said fateh to Sardarni jee, “Bhain jee please accept parshaad of Guru Ramdas jee. I had thought that when I come out of Darbar Sahib, I will wait for you to come and give you parshaad. It is my honour and good fortune that you came right at the time I came out of Darbar Sahib. Now please accept parshaad from me”.

Sardarni jee was moved by the humility of the Sardar and said fateh back to him and responded, “It is my big fortune (Dhan bhaag) that I am receiving parshaad from that veer’s hands whose hands only handle sword. Well! My visit in the hazoor of Guru Ramdas jee has been successful”.

Sardar got emotional and said, “After listening to the great gift of Guru Sahib to us – Gurbani – I can only derive that we are doing is futile. Only his naam is true and rest is false. Listening to Gurbani brings peace to mind. How foolish are we who indulge in petty enmities and ignore the message of Guru”.

“What you are saying is so true Veer jeeo. For so long we foolishly kept enmity between us. Now Satguru himself has done kirpa on us and we have realized the true path.”

“If you too are thinking along these lines, then Bhain jeeo, let us bury our enmities right now and perform an ardaas before Guru Ramdass jee. Let us make up for the past and from now on live like real brother and sister. Let us reconcile and finish off these problems and enmities created by maaiya”.

“Veer jeeo, you and I are both children of Guru Gobind Singh jee and at this time we are standing in the house of Guru Ramdass jee. If our problems and enmities are not going to get eliminated here, then where would they?”

After this they both sent a message to one of the greatest Granthi of Siri Darbar Sahib – Bhai Sahib Chanchal Singh jee to perform an ardaas for their unity. While they were waiting for Granthi jee to come, they both closed their eyes in Anand of Gurbani and felt immense love and thankfulness for Guru Sahib.

From that day onwards, they stayed like real brother and sister for rest of their lives. Ones who were thirsty for each other’s blood developed so much love for each other that even real biological brother sister cannot do. Such is the shakti of Gurbani and Naam.

WAHEGURU JI KA KHALSA WAHEGURU JI KI FATEH

One day gursikhs called Bhai Bhagvaan Daas, Bhai Bodla Malik, Pirthee Mal, Dalloo Bhagat, Shyaam Daas and Sunder came to the darbar of Guru Hargobind Sahib. They did matha tek to Guru Sahib and pleaded before Guru Sahib to show them the way to swim across this terrible ocean i.e. unity with Vaheguru.

It is written in the Sikh history that Guru Sahib gave them the following lessons to attain unity with Vaheguru:

1) Make a dharamshaala (Gurdwara) in your town.
2) Get up at amritvela and assemble at the Dharamshaala.
3) Do Naam abhyaas during amritvela.
4) After Naam abhyaas recite Gurbani.
5) Then spend some time to discuss and interpret the meanings of Gurbani.
6) Perform ardaas at the end of the diwaan.
7) During the day earn your living through honest means.
8) Never subscribe to dishonesty and fraud.
9) During the evening time assemble at the Dharamshaala.
10) Recite Rehraas Sahib and do kirtan.
11) After ardaas return to your homes and sleep after doing Sohila.
12) Help out poor Sikhs who need help.
13) Celebrate Gurpurabs.
14) Keep your mind humble and kill your ego.

The Sikhs who had done benti obeyed the hukams of Guru Sahib and this is how they swam across this terrible ocean of life and death.

See below the description of Shahid Bhai Mani Singh

ਸਜ ਦੁਮਾਲਾ ਸ਼ਸਤਰ ਪਹਿਰੈ I (He would tie a Dumalla on his head and wear Shashtar)

ਨੀਲੰਬਰ, ਗਜ ਸਵਾ ਕਛਹਿਰੈ I (He wore a Blue bana and had a long Kachera – sava gaj)

ਪਕੜ ਦੁਤਾਰਾ ਗਾਵੈ ਬਾਣੀ I (He would hold a saaj and sing Gurbanee)

ਆਸਾ ਵਾਰ ਸੁਖਾਂ ਦੀ ਖਾਣੀ I ੧੮੨ I (He would recite Asaa Vaar and receive the food of peace)

In the same way a similar thing is mentioned in Prachin Panth Prakash about Baba Gurbaksh Singh in his daily routine at Amritvela. It says ਪ੍ਰਾਤ ਉਠੇ ਅਰ ਸੁੱਖਾ ਪੀਵੇ I
Even the modern nihungs would have to admit that this is referring to Naam/Gurbanee here in that context. You would have to be a junkie to be having this as the first thing you do when you get up.

So the terminology of Sukha has sometimes been misinterpreted by some including historians.

However the mention of Sukha as drug also appears in some books, this version of Sukha seems to start appearing in the books of the 19th century. I have not seen it being mentioned in anything credible written in the 18th century, however others can correct me on this. The 19th century seems to be the period of wide spread mal practices in Gurmat and this is well documented.

So initially the use of Sukha may have been introduced for the weaker ones but it has now been turned into some sort of Maryada and a social/recreational drug. It does not serve any purpose in a normal GurSikh’s life.

This is only my analysis on this subject, however I am open to listen to other sensible views from supporters of the Sukha drug on its history and relevance with some proof other than something written in the 19th century.
