Religion, Faith, Spirituality / Kaulan« on: November 16, 2010, 04:42:42 PM »The Qazi had a beautiful daughter, Kaulan who was a disciple of Mian Mir. From her childhood she had occupied her mind praising God's Name and remembering Him in the company of the saints. Through the holy company of Mian Mir, she had heard praises of Satguru Sri Guru Har Gobind Sahib Ji Maharaj and she praised Satguru Ji in the midst of her own family. This incensed her father very much who addressed her, "O Infidel, you praise an infidel (Guru) and obey not the law of Mohammad, according to which it is forbidden, under penalty of death, to praise an infidel." Kaulan replied, "Father dear, the law of Mohammad does not apply to holy men. Saints are God's servants." On hearing this from her daughter, the Qazi burnt with bigotry and indignation. After consulting his brother Qazis, he issued an order for the execution of his daughter, Kaulan for her sin of transgressing the Mohammad law. Kaulan's mother informed her daughter and Mian Mir about the order of the Qazi. Mian Mir recommended to Kaulan, "There appears no means of saving you here. It is better if you go to Amritsar and seek protection of Satguru Sri Guru Har Gobind Sahib Ji Maharaj, the king of kings and the saint of saints. None else but he can save your life." Kaulan heeded Mian Mir's advice and went to Amritsar. Kaulan began her life at Amritsar under the protection of Satguru Ji. She was given a separate building to reside. Kaulan found consolation in repeating following Shabad: This Shabad is by Guru Raam Daas Ji in Raag Kaydaaraa on Ang 1118 of Dhan Dhan Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji Maharaj: kydwrw mhlw 4 Gru 1 <> siqgur pRswid ] myry mn hir hir gun khu ry ] siqgurU ky crn Doie Doie pUjhu ien ibiD myrw hir pRBu lhu ry ] rhwau ] kwmu k®oDu loBu mohu AiBmwnu ibKY rs ien sMgiq qy qU rhu ry ] imil sqsMgiq kIjY hir gosit swDU isau gosit hir pRym rswiexu rwm nwmu rswiexu hir rwm nwm rwm rmhu ry ]1] AMqr kw AiBmwnu joru qU ikCu ikCu ikCu jwnqw iehu dUir krhu Awpn ghu ry ] jn nwnk kau hir dieAwl hohu suAwmI hir sMqn kI DUir kir hry ]2]1]2] kaedhaaraa mehalaa 4 ghar 1 ik oa(n)kaar sathigur prasaadh || maerae man har har gun kahu rae || sathiguroo kae charan dhhoe dhhoe poojahu ein bidhh maeraa har prabh lahu rae || rehaao || kaam krodhh lobh mohu abhimaan bikhai ras ein sa(n)gath thae thoo rahu rae || mil sathasa(n)gath keejai har gosatt saadhhoo sio gosatt har praem rasaaein raam naam rasaaein har raam naam raam ramahu rae ||1|| a(n)thar kaa abhimaan jor thoo kishh kishh kishh jaanathaa eihu dhoor karahu aapan gahu rae || jan naanak ko har dhaeiaal hohu suaamee har sa(n)than kee dhhoor kar harae ||2||1||2|| Kaydaaraa, Fourth Mehl, First House: One Universal Creator God. Satguru Ji got a tank excavated in her name with that money in 1621. The tank is still famous as Kaulsar in the city of Amritsar. 343
Religion, Faith, Spirituality / Guru Angad Dev Ji And Salvation« on: November 16, 2010, 04:41:40 PM »
A barber named Dhinga remained with Satguru Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji Maharaj and used to clean the shoes of Satguru Jis sikhs. Dhinga used to think that only Sikhs of higher castes could obtain salvation. He used to worry alot about this and wondered how someone like him, could pass the test of dharam raj and rest at the feet of his Satguru Ji. Guru Ji knew what was passing in Bhai Dhinga's mind.
One day Bhai Dhinga saw his Guru Ji and bowed before his king, and asked him, 'O true guru, saviour of the world, I am of a low caste please give me some spirital guidance so that I can be saved from this cycle of births and deaths.' Satguru Ji, looked at Bhai Dhinga Ji and said, 'O beloved, the Guru is like a grave, and his sikhs are like the corpses in the grave. The corpses are laid in the grave when their physical life comes to an end and they cease to move. So when my Sikhs, let go of pride, and let go of the four other evils, and live with their head in the palm of their hand they are then fit to rest in the Guru's laps.' 'O my beloved, Bhai Dhinga, the saint Sain, was of the same trade as you, and he obtained salvation by serving his fellow creatures. You should therefore not despair about your deliverance from transmigration during your present birth. It is your actions which will be counted in the true court of Waheguru, not your caste.' Bhai Kidaru one day saw Satguru Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji Maharaj walking. Bhai Kidaru who had not had the darshan of his beloved guru for a long time, started to cry and ran towards his Guru. He bowed before his king and asked Satguru Ji, how he should escape from the fire of the deadly sins which were consuming the world. Satguru Ji replied, 'Bhai Kidaru, as when a forest catches fire and everything in the path of the fire, is being burnt and destoryed, the deer flee and run towards the nearest lake to cool themselves and seek protection from the lake that the fire may not hurt them. O Bhai Kidaru, In the same way, man should flee the deadly sins and take refuge in the cooling water of Satguru Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji Maharaj's instruction'. 344
Religion, Faith, Spirituality / Gurbani and Sri Guru Har Rai Sahib Ji« on: November 16, 2010, 04:40:35 PM »
One day Satguru Sri Guru Har Rai Maharaj’s Sikhs inquired whether those who read the Guru’s hymns without understanding them derived any spiritual advantage there from. Guru Ji gave no reply at the time, and the next morning went hunting. On a level plain on his way he saw pieces of a pot, which had held butter. The sun was melting the butter on the potsherds. Guru Ji took one of them in his hand and said, ‘Ye see, my Sikh brethren, these are old potsherds, but when they are heated, the butter that hath adhered to them rapidly melteth. As the grease adheres to the potsherds, so do the Guru’s hymns to the heart of his Sikhs. At the hour of death the Guru’s instruction shall assuredly bare fruit. Whether understood or not, it hath within it the seed of salvation. Perfume clingeth to the broken vase.
The meaning of this parable is, that whoever daily reads the Guru’s hymns shall assuredly obtain peace. And even though he does not fully understand them Waheguru will undoubtedly assist him. Satguru Sri Guru Ram Das Ji Maharaj said, ‘The word is the Guru, and the Guru is the Word, and in the word is the essence of ambrosia’. Satguru Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji Maharaj also said, ‘Waheguru will not destroy your labour’. ‘That is, even though ye understand not. God will accept your prayers. God never in the slightest degree spoileth a good act, so why should daily repetition of our hymns be wasted?’ The Guru’s questioners were satisfied and their devotion increased. DHAN DHAN SATGURU SRI GURU HAR RAI SAHIB JI MAHARAJ, THE KING OF KINGS AND THE SAINT OF SAINTS 346

Religion, Faith, Spirituality / Sri Guru Har Krishan Sahib Ji And The Queen« on: October 31, 2010, 03:09:07 PM »
The Emperor knew Ram Rai well and when he went to him with a complaint, the Emperor at once agreed to help him and find out all about the case. Ram Rai claimed that he could perform miracles whereas Har Krishan was only a Child and could do nothing. He wanted the king to believe that if Har Krishan couldn't work miracles he could not be the true Guru. The Emperor decided to see the young Guru and to find out for himself about the claim to be Guru. The Guru was summoned to Delhi and was asked to perform some miracles.
The young Guru reached Delhi with his mother and some Sikhs and was asked to stay with Raja Jai Singh and answer all the questions he put to him on behalf of the king. When asked to perform miracles, the Guru flatly refused and quoted from the Holy Granth, "Miracles and magic are useless, they keep you away from God." The Guru was, however, ready to discuss Sikhism and the Granth. Later the Guru answered the questions so well that the Emperor's ministers and Raja Jai Singh were left in no doubt that he was the true Guru. However, the Emperor still wanted to test him. That evening the Guru stayed at Raja Jai Singh's bungalow where the Emperor sent his queen disguised as a maidservant. After the evening prayer, the queen visited the Guru, along with some of her maids, and asked the Guru if he could go with them to see the queen to discuss religion with her. The Guru said that there was no need to go to the queen's palace because she could hear him very well if he spoke from his seat. The maids again asked the Guru to accompany them to the queen's palace because it was the royal order. The Guru smiled and said, "I am sorry you care more for tricks than for truth." Saying this he rose from his seat, picked up a small stick and walked towards the maids. He stroked the first with his stick and said, "God bless you." Then he stroked the second and said, "May you live long." He stopped near the real queen, put his stick on her head and said, "Truth is more powerful than tricks. You need to learn more, your Majesty. The time is fast approaching when queens like you will become maids not in disguise but in reality. Kings and queens will be found only in stories for children." Everybody, was surprised at this incident and the Guru's words. The matter was reported to the king who felt satisfied that Har Krishan was the real Guru of the Sikhs. He rejected Ram Rai's claim to Guruship there and then. 357

Religion, Faith, Spirituality / 5 Enemies Of Mankind« on: October 30, 2010, 04:12:58 PM »
One day, a Sikh named Kadhari, came to see the 2nd Guru Ji - Guru Angad Dev Ji. He had come in a "vairaag", bowed down before Guru Ji and asked the following question.
Q. The five enemies of mankind, namely lust, anger, greed, worldly attachment and the ego have surrounded the whole world. How can we save ourselves from their deadly clutches? If we can know them then some defence against them is possible, but most of the world is not even aware of their existence. Guru Angad Dev ji gave a "parman" or example. He told the Sikh that, when a jungle catches fire most of the animals are unable to run to safety and so they perish. But there is one animal, a deer or "Hiran" which can run so fast and so reaches safety when the jungle is on fire; it runs towards a river, submerges itself in the cold water and escapes being burnt. The fire cannot reach it and it gets peace there or "sukh". Mankind is also surrounded by the fire of "Kal" and he is unable to avoid this fire unlike the deer. Mankind is in trouble; they have no peace of mind in whose house the five robbers of lust, anger, greed, worldly attachments and ego have entered. Can that house be saved? Surely not, because only a few, like the deer, are saved. The river of cold water is the satsang. Guru Ji further explained that satsang is where praise alone is showered in God's Name. In such a "river of satsang" the five evil forces of the mind are destroyed and the coldness against the world's fire is provided by the Guru's shabad or light. Extracted from "Divine Mystic Reflections on Gurmat" by the late Saint Scholar Naranjan Singh. Compiled by the late Dr Harcharanjit Singh 359
Religion, Faith, Spirituality / Bhai Tilaku jee and a Yogi« on: October 30, 2010, 04:11:36 PM »
By Bhai Kulbir Singh
Bhai Tilaku was a Sikh of Siri Guru Arjun Dev jee and lived in the Garh Shankar town of Punjab. Garh Shankar is in Jalandhar or Hoshiarpur district of Punjab. He was a great rasiya of Naam and Gurbani. He used to recite Mool Mantr a lot and his abhyaas was so intensive that he did not let any moment go without Mool Mantr. He led his life in a very honest fashion and never said anything bad to anyone. He never used to bow his head to anyone other than Guru Sahib. He earned his living working hard and neither he owed anyone nor anyone owed him anything. He lived his life totally free of the worldly chains of Kaam, Krodh, Lobh, Moh and Ahankaar. In Garh Shankar there also lived a Yogi who was an accomplished Yogi. He had a lot of Ridhi Sidhi (mystical powers). He was more than 100 years old and had a great following in the city he lived in. Along with Ridhi Sidhi, he also was infected with the Haume Rog (disease of Ego). People used to sing his praises on his face and this resulted in his downfall and he developed the terrible haume rog. The Yogi organized a great bhandaara (inviting people to his house for eating) in which everyone from the town was invited. The Yogi announced that whoever would attend his bhandaara would get 2 years of Swarag (heaven). Hearing the Yogi’s invitation, the residents of Garh Shankar flocked to the dera of the Yogi and sang his praises. Hearing his praises, the Yogi got more egoistic and asked his followers to see if anyone from the town had not come to his bhandaara. The Yogi’s followers came back and told him that Bhai Tilaku had not come to his bhandaara. They also told the Yogi that Bhai Tilaku had said that he did not need any Swarag and as thus did not need to attend the bhandaara. The Yogi’s ego got hurt hearing Bhai Tilaku’s response and he sent his followers telling them that he was offering Bhai Tilaku 10 years in Swarag, if he agreed to come to the bhandaara. Hearing this Bhai Tilaku smilingly said that he would consider any effort for Swarag a paap and as such refused to go to the bhandaara. KYA NARAK, KYAA SURAG BICHAARA, SANTAN DOYOO RAADE|| (The Gursikh sant don't care about heaven and hell as they don't have to go to either of these places) Hearing the response of Bhai Tilaku, the Yogi got very upset. Everyone had found out by then that Bhai Tilaku had refused to come. The Yogi, vowed that he would use his Yogic powers and force Bhai Tilaku to come. He developed a great feeling of enmity and anger towards Bhai Tilaku. Because of his such feelings, his kamaayee (spiritual earnings) got reduced. The Yogi got into smadhi and using his yogic powers and called up the evil powers like bhoots, prets and birs. He dispatched them to go to Bhai Tilaku and force him to come to him. The evil powers arrived at Bhai Tilaku’s house and tried to harm Bhai Sahib. As these powers arrived closer to Bhai Sahib, they felt helpless to hurt him. Bhai Sahib was reciting Mool Mantr with utmost concentration. They tried their best but could not do anything. After trying and losing to Bhai Sahib, the evil forces came back to the Yogi and expressed their helplessness. By then, the Yogi felt empty as his power had got spent in trying to harm Bhai Sahib. The evil powers told the Yogi that some higher power was protecting Bhai Sahib. The Yogi after losing all his shakti, came back to his senses and decided to go and see Bhai Tilaku himself. He arrived at his house and knocked his door. He was accompanied by the whole city. When Bhai Sahib opened his door, the Yogi very humbly saluted him and Bhai Sahib responded accordingly. The first question the Yogi asked was about the identity of Bhai Sahib’s Guru. Bhai Sahib responded by saying that he was a humble servant of Guru Arjun Dev jee. At this the Yogi asked him about the mantra he used against him. Bhai Tilaku told him about Guru Sahib’s baani and also told him that he did not have any bad feeling for the Yogi and he did not use it against him. He told the Yogi that Gurbani was pure amrit (nector) and reciting baani is like drinking sweet amrit. Hearing some baani from Bhai Sahib, the Yogi felt compelled to see Guru Sahib. Bhai Tilaku brought the Yogi to Siri Amritsar Sahib, where the Yogi met Guru Sahib and became his Sikh. Bhai Tilaku jee’s saakhi gives us some very valuable lessons: 1. We must only bow before Guru and his sangat. 2. We should have all our expectations on Naam and Gurbani alone. 3. If we keep our expectations on Naam and Gurbani and have faith in them, nothing can harm us. 4. We must live an honest life and keep other morals. 5. No matter how strong or great, we should not leave our Guru and go to someone else for anything. 360
Religion, Faith, Spirituality / Guru Ji'S True Form« on: October 28, 2010, 03:28:54 PM »
Wahegurujikakhalsawahegurujikifateh
One time during the summer some sangat were sat under a tree outside a Gurudwara Sahib talking about the weather. As they spoke about the heat one of the sangat members said that he wished they could get some badam from somewhere so that they could make some cool Badam Milk. All the sangat members agreed with him but began to mourn the fact that badam were currently not in season. As they said this one moorakh sat over there saidwhile laughing, “Why don't you climb up this tree and shake it? Badam will surely come falling down!” (In reference to the test set by Satguru Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji Maharaj for Bhai Lehna Ji) Sant Teja Singh Ji whowas walking near by overheard what the moorakh said and immediately told him not to utter such stupid remarks. Santji then began to tell the sangat that the house of Dhan Guru Nanak Dev Ji Maharaj lacks nothing as Satguru Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji Maharaj is Nirankar himself. After saying this Santji began to shake the tree and badam began to fall down. Santji then very lovingly collected all the badam and made Badam Milk which he offered to Sant Baba Attar Singh Ji. When Sant Attar Singh Ji saw the Badam Milk he looked at Sant Teja Singh Ji with surprise and told him where did you get the badam from? Sant Teja Singh then narrated the events above. Sant Attar Singh Ji admired Sant Teja Singh Ji's love for Guru Sahib but also gave an updesh about using such atmik shaktis. Khalsaji never doubt the events that unfold till today at the beautiful feet of Dhan Dhan Dhan Dhan Dhan Satguru Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji Maharaj. Loose translation based on katha, originally transcribed in a book written about the Jeevani of Sant Baba Teja Singh Ji. Wahegurujikakhalsawahegurujikifateh |
