Religion, Faith, Spirituality / The Clever Rabbit
« on: January 04, 2011, 09:20:00 AM »
The lion is the king of the jungle. Once there was a lion that was not grateful for being king. Instead he thought he was better than everyone else. He would say, "Look at me I'm the greatest, I'm the strongest, I'm the most virtuous, I'm simply the best". Well his wife told him, "If you are the best, why don't you ask everyone else, maybe they don't think so."

This concerned the lion. So he went to every animal there was and asked them. He said, "Don't worry, I won't hurt you, I just want to ask you a question. Who is the king of the jungle? Who is the greatest." Every one was too afraid to tell him that they thought he was too proud. They thought he might eat them if they said something he wouldn't like. So they all told him, "You are the king of the jungle, you are the greatest".

Everyone except for the rabbit. The rabbit wasn't scared. He wasn't afraid because he was very clever and he had an idea. He told the lion, "You are not the greatest." The lion got very angry after hearing this. He roared, "Well if I'm not the greatest, who is?!!!! I want to meet them!!"

So the rabbit told him, "Follow me, I'll show you". They came to a clearing in the jungle where there was a well. The rabbit said, "Put your head in there and roar". So the lion roared in the well. The roar echoed back very loudly. The lion, a little bit nervous now, asked, "Who is that? Is that another lion??" The rabbit said, "Yes it is. He's down there and he says he's the real king of the jungle and the he's much greater than you".

This made the lion more angry than he had ever been. "I'll show him!!! I'm the greatest!!! ROOAAAARRR!!" And he jumped in to the well trying to defeat the other lion. The lion was never heard of again. That is how the rabbit tricked the lion. Even though the lion was the strongest, the rabbit was more clever. Sometimes the smallest are the sharpest!

Religion, Faith, Spirituality / Baba Atal Rai
« on: January 04, 2011, 09:18:24 AM »
Baba Atal Rai was one of the sons of Guru Hargobind. Because he was a son of the Guru, people called him ‘Baba’, and they treated him like a prince. He was very wise for his age, he was adventurous and he loved to play games and have fun. He was very bright and was always in high spirits. Sometimes he would say things and, even if he was joking, they would happen. His father, the Guru, enjoyed him very much. The Guru told him, “God has given you much power. Don’t make a show of it. If you have to use it, use it with caution and wisdom. Don’t waste it away on little things.” Baba Atal would reply, “I am like a river, and you are like the ocean. Everything comes from you anyway.
Baba Atal loved to play sports, he and his friends would always play a game sort of like baseball. They would take turns throwing and hitting the ball. One of Atal’s best friends was named Mohan. As they played ball one day it started to get late. Mohan had his turn to bat and, before Atal could take his turn, it was getting too late. So Baba Atal said, “OK I’ll take my turn tomorrow first thing in the morning.
So the next morning Baba Atal and some friends came out to play... but Mohan wasn’t there. They all went to Mohan’s house. His parents were crying, “Our son... he’s dead... A cobra snuck in to his room at night and bit him. He’s been dead for hours now. Our poor son... he’s dead.” Baba Atal went over to his friends body which was covered by a white sheet. He said, “Get up Mohan. Don’t be lazy, just because you don’t want to give me a turn to bat. Wake up, say ‘Waheguru!’  and wake up!
Then the unimaginable happened! Mohan yawned as if he was waking up from sleep. He stretched and said, “Waheguru.” Then he said, “I guess I shouldn’t have slept so late. Let’s go play! Atal, it’s your turn.” So Baba Atal, Mohan and all their friends left and went to play ball. The parents were filled with disbelief, they were overjoyed and said, “It’s a miracle, our son is alive!
As the children played ball in the field, the adults were making quite stir in the city of Amritsar. “The Guru’s son, Baba Atal, can bring the dead back to life!” Many people were amazed by the miracle and happy for the family of Mohan.
But there was one person who wasn’t surprised, excited or entertained by what had happened. The Guru. Guru Hargobind saw more than the others because he saw with a higher vision... and he wasn’t happy about this at all. When Baba Atal went to sit on his father’s lap as he always did, he knew that something was different. He knew something was wrong
Guru ji said, “You have used your powers as I have warned you not to. Now if anyone dies, they will bring the body to us to bring that person back to life. Who will you bring back and who will you leave dead? Only God should decide who lives and who leaves this world. We should accept the Will of God with a cheerful attitude.”  Baba Atal understood what he had done. He remembered his grandfather, Guru Arjun Dev. He remembered how Guru Arjun let himself be tortured when he could have done a miracle to get out of the pain. He remembered the truth of things. He said to his father, “O True King, may you live for ages. I brought back my friend, and now I understand that I owe a life in return and that I must return to our True Home.     He took a dip in the sarovar near the Hari Mandir Sahib. Then he walked around the parkarma four times. He sat down and rested his chin on his bat and recited the Prayer of Peace - Sukhmani Sahib. When he finished the Bani, he bowed down and left his body. After the Guru heard this, he said, “Baba Atal’s name shall live forever. He surrendered to the Will of God. At the tender age of nine he left his body and merged with the One.” The Guru ordered a temple built in Baba Atal’s honor. It stands still today - nine stories high and is called “Baba Atal.”  Blessed are the saints who, merged with the Naam, sweetly understand and accept the Will of God.

Religion, Faith, Spirituality / Nanak and the River
« on: January 04, 2011, 09:16:59 AM »
Early every morning Nanak loved take a bath in the nearby river. He would clean himself with the cold water and then he would meditate. The time was coming for Nanak’s life to change in a big way. All his life he only cared about God. When he was born, the astrologer predicted that he would be a great man that Hindus and Muslims would both love. Soon it would be nanak’s time to go out and deliver his destiny.
One day as he was meditating many kinds of demons came to him and tried to scare him. He was being tested to see if he lived in God or if he was fearful. But Nanak wasn’t scared at all. He calmly watched the demons and felt at peace. When they couldn’t scare him, the demons tried something else. They decided to offer him lots of riches. They showed him beautiful gold, rubies and jewels of all kinds. They said “There’s nothing wrong, just take it, you deserve it, just take it. It is yours” He was being tested to see if he would desire money. But Nanak kew what was happening and he could not be tricked. He just smiled and let them keep talking. Then the demons offered him power, “People will love you, you make anyone do anything you want, you can do whatever you like, everyone will obey you. You will be like a great king and everyone will worship you. Anything you want will just happen.” Nanak didn’t move. He saw right through them. He knew it was just a trick and he just kept meditating on God.
Next they showed him magic powers. They said, “You could do magic, you could make yourself invisible; you could fly; you could do all kinds of amazing things.” Nanak just laughed and said “Only a fool would take these things.” They offered every wonderful thing in the world but Nanak wasn’t fooled for one second.
The demons went away and Nanak went to bathe in the river. Then... he disappeared and no one saw him. He was gone for a very long time. People started walking up and down the river calling, “Nanak, Nanak where are you? Nanak, Nanak?”
But Nanak was in bliss and was merging with God. The universe revealed all its secrets to him. He drank divine nectar. He heard a voice say, “I am.” It was the voice of God. “You are filled with joy. All who follow you will be happy. Don’t let your mind get dirty from anything in this world. Recite the Naam, share it with others. Be kind to everyone. I am God of the universe and you must now go and teach.” Guru Nanak was completely merged with God.
After three days he came out of the river. People were surprised to see him alive. They thought he had drowned. He looked full of light. and he didn’t talk much. After a long time he finally spoke. He said “There is no Hindu, there is no Muslim. Everyone is the same.” Then he spoke the Mool Mantra and the rest of Japji. His work had begun. He, Mardana and Bala started travelling together to teach. Guru Nanak’s wife, Bibi Sulakhani, started crying and said, “Don’t leave me alone.” He touched her on the forehead and her third eye opend. She saw how the world was in pain. She understood what Nanak had to do. She said, “It’s true, you must go. The world is on fire and you must put it out.” So they left to spread the message of the One in everyone.
