Knowledge / Hiroo Onoda
« on: March 09, 2011, 09:25:58 PM »
In 1944, Lt. Hiroo Onoda was sent by the Japanese army to the remote Philippine island of Lubang. His mission was to conduct guerrilla warfare during World War II. Unfortunately, he was never officially told the war had ended; so for 29 years, Onoda continued to live in the jungle, ready for when his country would again need his services and information. Eating coconuts and bananas and deftly evading searching parties he believed were enemy scouts, Onoda hid in the jungle until he finally emerged from the dark recesses of the island on March 19, 1972.

Hiroo Onoda was 20 years-old when he was called up to join the army. At the time, he was far from home working at a branch of the Tajima Yoko trading company in Hankow (now Wuhan), China. After passing his physical, Onoda quit his job and returned to his home in Wakayama, Japan in August of 1942 to get into top physical condition.

In the Japanese army, Onoda was trained as an officer and was then chosen to be trained at an Imperial Army intelligence school. At this school, Onoda was taught how to gather intelligence and how to conduct guerrilla warfare.

His orders were
“You are absolutely forbidden to die by your own hand. It may take three years, it may take five, but whatever happens, we'll come back for you. Until then, so long as you have one soldier, you are to continue to lead him. You may have to live on coconuts. If that's the case, live on coconuts! Under no circumstances are you [to] give up your life voluntarily.”

The rest of his story can be read here:

The Song is from the Camel album entitled “Nude” which was dedicated to and told Onoda’s story. The guitarist (Andrew Latimer) is one of my own personal favourite guitarists.

Knowledge / Phoolan Devi, The Bandit Queen. A Short Life.
« on: March 01, 2011, 06:51:32 PM »
Phoolan Devi (Goddess of Flowers) was only born in 1963 in Utter Pardesh in a small village on the banks of Yamuna river. The village was Gohra Ka Purwa. She was born to a very poor family whose income came from fishing. But all that changed pretty soon into her early twenties and by her mid twenties she became one of the most famous outlaws in Indian history.

Why? What happened?

Early Life

Well, it is well known that she was beginning to show defiance as early as the age of ten when she organised sit-ins on some land that her father had been swindled out of. For this she received many beatings.

Like many girls of lower casts Phoolan Devi was married at the age of 12. Women of lower casts were and to some extent still seen as just objects for bearing children and not much else. Her husband was a widower who was in his 30s. Her marriage was never a healthy or happy one. She suffered much abuse as well as rape. However, she escaped this by running away and returning to Gohra Ka Purwa.

In lower caste Indian society this is seen as a taboo if not a sin indeed. As a result her family refused to accept her deed and expelled her. She then went on to become an out caste travelling from village to village.

Held in custody

In the meantime she continues to fight for the land that her father lost. She even takes legal proceedings in Court. Her case is heard in Allahabad. But later she is arrested on trumped up charges of burglary and theft. It is at this stage that her rebellious streak is given air.

It is believed that she spends about a month in jail but is repeatedly abused and raped by police. But that is nothing new as lower caste women were often arrested expressly for that purpose.

She becomes an outlaw

Upon release she is again kidnapped; only this time it worked in an odd sort of way. One of the gang of kidnappers shoots the leader of the gang hired to kidnap her. After being tortured and beaten for two days the leader (Babu Gujar) is shot by Vikram Mallah who then goes onto take command of the gang. He also makes Phoolan Devi his own personal lover.

It is at this stage she learns to live outside the law. It is here that she experiences her first taste of power. She is suddenly in a position of strength even though it is outside of the law. It also has to borne in mind that she, being from a low caste family, probably only knew of the unfair advantages that the higher castes held over the poor. Rape is often a weapon used by the rich and powerful against the poor in a society which is caste ridden. In an Indian society honour is everything. She becomes a decoit, an outlaw. She learns to shoot and becomes very good with the rifle. Gradually through time she began to have influence over Vikram Mallah. He listened to her and she wisely reminded him that he too was from a lower caste background.

Through time Mallah and Devi conduct various raids and attacks on upper caste homesteads and property. Interestingly, like Robin Hood, they dished out some of the loot to the poor in the local villages. The only difference being Robin Hood was a ficticious character and she being very much real. As time went on the gang became quite notorious and powerful. They became known for their raids in UP and Madhya Pardesh.

Vikram Mallah dies

In 1980 two brothers Sri and Lala Ram were released from jail. These two unsavoury characters had been members of Babu Gujars gang. They had developed a hatred for Mallah and were now looking to establish their own gang but in order to do that they had to fight it out with Mallah and Devi’s gang. They managed to ambush them and in that fight Mallah was killed. Phoolan Devi was once again kidnapped. She is held in a village called Behmai although she is not aware of this at the time.

She is raped repeatedly by the members of the Ram brothers’ gang. She is raped until she is left unconscious. It is also known that she was stripped naked and forced to get water from the village well. In her eyes that is the ultimate degradation; something that would come back and haunt the residents of Behmai. She is raped each night for a fortnight until she is rescued by a Pandit from a nearby village.

Retribution in Behmai

It is thought that a couple of years later her and her gang returned to Behmai and took terrible revenge on the villagers and some of the Ram brothers’ gang. However, that was by misfortune of the villagers because Phoolan Devi was not aware she was in Behmai until she recognised two of the men who had raped her whilst being held there. The villager did not inform her where the Ram brothers could be found. The men folk from the village were lined up and shot. It is known that 22 men died that day with a further eight wounded. This was the biggest ever known massacre in modern India’s outlaw history.

The Bandit Queen gives up

In front of a very large crowd, some say as many as 12,000 people, Phoolan Devi gave up. She was by this time tired of life on the run and her gang was depleted; illnesses and violent death being the major cause. Peace activists and journalists from around the globe helped her. She had some conditions to her surrender, one being that a portraite of Mahatma Ghandi and one of Durga Devi too be present at her surrender. Her father’s land was also to be returned to him as well as no further persecution of her gang members was to be enforced other than they serve eight years in jail. She herself served eleven years in jail. She was pardoned in 1994.

She entered Indian Politics in 1996.

She was murdered on 25 July 2001 in New Delhi.

Knowledge / India Secular?
« on: February 23, 2011, 09:54:18 PM »
Is India really secular?

It is a well known fact that Hinduism, Sikhism, Jainism and Buddhism all took their birth in India. Dozens of millions Christians also live in India and one of the oldest Jewish communities outside Israel is also in India. Even conservative estimates will put the population of India as having been made up of at least 80% followers of Hinduism. Interestingly enough is the fact that there is at least one state of India where one of the other faiths reaches a near if not outright majority. Nagaland for example is predominately Christian; the Sikhs have a narrow majority in the Punjab although that is probably decreasing rapidly due to all the “bhiya” labourers arriving from UP. For all of its troubles J&K is Muslim.

Just over 60 years ago, whilst keeping a relationship with its old colonial masters through the Commonwealth, India became independent from the British. India’s first PM Mr Jawaharlal Nehru is on record as saying one of the greatest difficulties he faced was "Perhaps, too, creating a secular state in a religious country."

The following is the opening statement of the Constitution of India.

“WE, THE PEOPLE OF INDIA, having solemnly resolved to constitute India into a SOVEREIGN SOCIALIST SECULAR DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC and to secure to all its citizens:

So after all this time, is India still secular? Does it indeed portray itself as secular? I suppose on paper it does. The question arises though, why did it take until 1976 for the word “secular” to be added to this document. And what exactly does it mean? There seem to be no explanation to this and the evidence for it in practice is not blatantly visible. Is it an explicit instruction to the reader to understand clearly what India is or at least is meant to be?

I ask the above questions because even the Supreme Courts don’t really have an explanation for it nor does the Indian Parliament display what is meant, in India’s case, by “secular”.  The problem being that India has many religions, many faiths, many languages and above all many customs. It also goes without saying that the Caste system is still widely practiced, especially by those in the majority religion. Constitutionally, no one religion is supposed to have any superior claim over another. One religion can not claim political power in a state over another.

So what is this Constitution based on? There is indeed a visible influence of the American Constitution, there is also the influence of the “old masters’” language; English. Of course there would also be the wish to please the watchful eye of the world when a new country, or should I say republic, is born. Yet if you compare its structure to that of some Western models you will see that, especially France,  have deliberately separated religious following (organised or not) and the State. One of the most ardent of these is France.

But in India, there is no such glaring division between the religions and State. The French banning the Burqa and the Turban is evidence of France’s hard line adherence to their idea of secularism. But in India the State and Courts prefer not to be on any side, they would rather be neutral. In France the State is Anti religion; that is why it would ban religion from Government and public office. Interestingly, and controversial it might be to the outsider; especially to the English speaking world; it does seem to work, well to a certain degree any way. Some might say it does if you are a Hindu, but those still waiting for justice for the crimes of 1984 will say it doesn’t.

But how long will it last? There is a perception that secular though it might be, the Judiciary, the Police and organisations such as the RSS favour above all Hindus. Many Hindus already refer to Christians as Hindu-Christi, to Muslims as Hindu-Mohamadi’s and to Sikhs as the Armed Wing of Hindusim. Add to this the communal violence against Muslims in 2002, the Sikhs in 1984 and regular anti Christian unrest it is obvious that there would be distrust as the minorities feel that organisations such as the BJP and RSS have undue influence over the dhoti wallas in power. This would leave any one from Indias minority religions feeling insecure and believing that “secular” India is not really secular.

“The RSS-BJP try to make Savarkar’s term Hindutva even more inclusive than Savarkar intended.  They claim that any Indian who “identifies with India” is thereby a Hindu.  A Muslim who satisfies this condition (what Gandhians called a “nationalist Muslim”) should call himself a “Mohammedi Hindu”.  As L.K. Advani explains: “those residing in the country are Hindus even if many of them believe in different religions.(…) those following Islam are ‘Mohammedi Hindus’.  Likewise, Christians living in the country are ‘Christian Hindus’, while Sikhs are termed ‘Sikh Hindus’.  The respective identities are not undermined by such a fonnulation.”5 in this sense, they would be just as much at home in a Hindu Rashtra as a Vaishnava or Shaiva Hindu.”
(from http://koenraadelst.bharatvani.org/books/wiah/ch4.htm )

Muslims of India probably have the biggest axe to grind. After all, they are amongs the worst off communities of India. Their average life expectancy lower than the rest, their literacy is lower than the rest too and their ghettos are growing. The Christians are not far behind with similar figures. But for a secular country the Indian State does give subsidised air travel to Muslims travelling to Saudi to do hajj.

It seams India is developing its own idea of secularism. But the interesting thing is that Secularism has taken on two different unwritten definitions. One is that of the religious perspective as that adopted by Ghandi and the political one as adopted by Nehru. On the other side of the coin is the fact that many will tell you that the most senior politicians of India come from diverse backgrounds and different religions.

So is India really secular? Feel free to add your thoughts.

I am at the moment looking at the Constitution its self, there are many oddities in it which I hope to discuss with any one wishes to discuss it soon.

Shocking India, not so modern is it?

Is this your India?

The photographs taken by a Chinese tourist, which appeared on the ChinaSmack website in October 2010, suggest India is very much still in the past; in particular when it comes to some of its religious customs. The photos have been in the Chinese media since 2008.

My own view is that the Indian Government needs to step in and begin an educational program designed to drag India into the modern age. The time for dead bodies in the rivers needs to be left in the past.

I WARN YOU, SOME OF THE PHOTOS ARE VERY HARROWING, FROM THE 2OTH PHOTO ONWARDS THEY FOCUS ON THE RIVER GANGES. The more you scroll down the more gruesome they become.

If you have a strong stomach, scroll down through the photos. The first 20 or so are reasonable but after that.............................. well see for your self. Don't say you haven't been warned.

Shocking India, not so modern is it?

GO TO THE LINK BELOW

Persevere and allow the photos to load. The take  few seconds. If a script message comes up press continue and give it about 10 seconds.

A message for the moderators, please do not remove this thread. I have posted it without prejudice or malice. I feel that it will be educational for those who wish to be educated. I realise that some will always bury their heads in the sand and pretend it isn’t so. But the photographs do show a part of India which is stuck firmly in the past and needs to change rapidly even if it is only in the interest of hygiene and disease prevention. Most Non Resident Indians never see this side of India.

I offer my thanks in advance.

News Khabran / Man shot in head sneezes out bullet
« on: February 21, 2011, 04:33:41 PM »
Gunshot victim Darco Sangermano stunned doctors by sneezing out a bullet that had hit him in the head.

Mr Sangermano, 28, who is expected to make a full recovery, then said he felt no pain other than a strong headache.
‘This was a very strange case and the first of its kind I am aware of,’ said Prof Sid Berrone, who carried out a ‘tidy-up operation’ on Mr Sangermano before sending him home. ‘He was a very lucky man – he could have been easily killed.’

Mr Sangermano was hit by the stray bullet as revellers fired into the air on New Year’s Eve.
The .22-calibre round entered the right side of his head, passed behind his eye, hit a bone in his nose and finally lodged in his nostril, before being sneezed out in hospital.

The incident happened in Naples, Italy, where two other people were hit and one was killed in similar incidents.
Mr Sangermano’s girlfriend, of Turin, who asked not to be named, said: ‘We were walking when all of a sudden there were some bangs and he said he felt a pain to his head – he was covered in blood.’

News Khabran / Worlds Oldest Dad aged 94.
« on: December 30, 2010, 08:30:21 PM »
Oh balle shera, Babbe ne phatte chak ditte, te haje kehnda hor niaane bnaune aa.

World's oldest dad Ramjit Raghav, 94, wants to try for another child.

After more than nine decades of a carefree bachelor lifestyle, changing nappies could come as something of a shock.
At 94 years of age Ramjit Raghav has all that to look forward to after claiming to have become the world’s oldest dad with the birth of his first child.

And now he’s got the hang of it, his partner Shakuntala Devi – a slip of a girl at just 51 – can look forward to more nonagenarian nookie as he has plans for a sibling for his son, Vikramjeet.
Speaking after Vikramjeet’s birth in Kharkhoda civil hospital, northern India, Ramjit said: “It is great that I have become the world’s oldest dad.

“I am a strong follower of Lord Shiva. This child is god’s gift.”

The delighted dad, who was a wrestler in his youth, attributes his virility to his diet. He said: “My daily diet comprises of three litres of milk, half a kilo of almonds and half a kilo of ghee.

“I had visited a quack in the village and he gave me some tablets, but I threw them away.” And he has no fear of not being around to see the boy grow up. He said: “Nothing will happen to my child as I will die only if a black snake bites me and that is very far. Visit me after 10 years and you will find me in the same appearance.”

Some have questioned Ramjit’s claim but Dr Paramjeet Singh, chief medical officer at the Kharkhoda civil hospital, said: “Having babies at such an age is a remote possibility, but it just needs one sperm to fertilise an egg.”
Born in 1916 when George V was Emperor of India, Ramjit has worked as a £44-a-month farm labourer for the past 22 years. The new dad wipes fellow Indian Nanu Ram Jogi, who fathered his 21st child at the age of 90 in 2007, out of the record books.

Britain’s oldest dad is Raymond Calvert, 79. He had Jamie Rai with Charlotte Calvert, 25, this year.

Bride discovers husband is a woman… six months into marriage

An Indian woman has discovered that her husband is actually a woman, after being married for six months.

Minati Khatua, from Orissa, allegedly found out the hidden truth after walking in on her spouse taking a bath.
Her husband, known as Sitakant Routray, had originally said that he was not willing to consummate the pair's marriage as 'he' was observing a religious ritual.

Police have now launched an investigation into the marriage, with investigators believing that the groom could have gone through with the ceremony in order to receive the dowry which is presented on these occasions, with a car, gold ornaments and £350 in cash part among the gifts.

'I thought he was devout and respectful of me. But when I walked into the bathroom there was no mistaking that my husband was 100 per cent a woman.

It is also being reported that Routray has now vanished with a car and a jeep, which were bought with loans taken from a bank account in Ms Khatua's name.

'I always try and unpack that he was a man, but failed many times. What was feared has been proved; she is a woman,' Ms Khatua added.

Woman being prepared for burial comes back to life

A woman being prepared for burial stunned funeral workers when she came back to life.

Maria das Dores was a few hours from being buried alive when an official noticed she was still breathing.

The 88-year-old was rushed back to the same hospital who had earlier declared her dead.
Officials in Brazil have now launched an investigation into how medical chiefs failed to realise the woman was alive and not dead when they sent her body for burial. She had been brought to the hospital in the town of Ipatinga suffering from blocked arteries. She also suffered from Alzheimer's and was bedridden.
Doctors declared her dead on Dec 22 after noticing she had no vital signs.

Her body was transferred to a local undertakers to prepare her for burial. An official looking into her coffin noticed she was still breathing and that she had moved. Custodia Amancio, daughter of the resuscitated Brazilian woman, said: "We are happy to know my mother is alive and unhappy with the lack of respect due her. We are still not sure if we will sue the municipality and hospital. "She continues in the intensive ward treatment ward and we are praying that she will improve quickly."

Indian onions crisis: Custom duty slashed to zero

India has abolished import taxes on onions in the latest attempt to control prices of the staple food which have more than doubled in a week.

The customs duty would be cut from 5% to zero, Finance Secretary Ashok Chawla told reporters in Delhi.

The price of onions has risen to an eye-watering 85 rupees ($1.87; £1.20) per kg from 35 rupees only last week.

The rise has been blamed on unusually heavy rains in growing areas, as well as on hoarders and speculators.

On Monday, the government banned exports of the food, a basic ingredient in many Indian dishes, until 15 January.
Onion-less dosas

The country has also begun importing onions from its neighbouring rival, Pakistan, to ease shortages.

High prices of essential commodities such as onions have previously sparked unrest and helped bring down the national government in 2004.

Indian onion crops have been damaged by unseasonal rains in the bulk producing western states of Maharashtra and Gujarat and in southern states.

In an editorial on Wednesday, the Times of India newspaper called for "tough punitive action" if claims that officials have colluded in the hoarding of onions in growing areas were found to be true.

NDTV reports that Bangalore hotel chefs are racking their brains for ways to serve up popular south Indian dishes such as onion dosas (pancakes) - without any onions.

The rising cost of living is a pressing concern for most Indians.

Food price inflation has retreated over recent months, but remains at a high of nearly 10%, a worry for the ruling Congress party ahead of a number of important state elections next year.
