Ten Sikh Gurus
"The Palace of the Lord God is so beautiful. Within it, there are gems, rubies, pearls and flawless diamonds. A fortress of gold surrounds this Source of Nectar. How can I climb up to the Fortress without a ladder? By meditating on the Lord, through the Guru,
I am blessed and exalted. The Guru is the Ladder, the Guru is the Boat, and the Guru is the Raft to take me to the Lord's Name. The Guru is the Boat to carry me across the world-ocean; the Guru is the Sacred Shrine of Pilgrimage, the Guru is the Holy River. If it pleases Him, I bathe in the Pool of Truth, and become radiant and pure." (Guru Nanak, Sri Rag, pg. 17)
The word 'Guru' in Sanskrit means teacher, honoured person, religious person or saint. Sikhism though has a very specific definition of the word 'Guru'. It means the descent of divine guidance to mankind provided through ten Enlightened Masters. This honour of being called a Sikh Guru applies only to the ten Gurus who founded the religion starting with Guru Nanak in 1469 and ending with Guru Gobind Singh in 1708; thereafter it refers to the Sikh Holy Scriptures the Guru Granth Sahib. The divine spirit was passed from one Guru to the next as "The light of a lamp which lights another does not abate. Similarly a spiritual leader and his disciple become equal, Nanak says the truth."

What Are the Five K's?

Sometimes called simply the 5 K's. An Amritdhari, or initiated Sikh is required to wear all of the 5 K's during the Sikh baptism, or initiation ceremony of Amrit, and there after. The articles are to be kept on or with the person at all times.
Because the name of each one of the five articles begins with the letter (or sound of) K, they are commonly called the five K's or kakar(s). The kakar each have a practical function.
1. Kachhera, Undergarment
Kachhera is a loose undergarment worn by Sikhs. Historically, Sikhs are warriors. The kachhera is designed for ease of movement while maintaining modesty, whether sitting cross-legged for worship, or engaging in martial arts allowing for agility in battle or horseback.
Kanga, Wooden Comb
The Kanga is a wooden comb. It comes in a variety of sizes. Some have short fine teeth and others long wide teeth. Sikhs do not cut their hair. In the days before shampoo, Sikhs cleansed their hair using water and oil. The traditional practice of using oil to continues in modern times and helps prevent snarling of the tresses and nourishes the scalp. A large kanga removes tangles easily. A small fine toothed kanga is useful for cleaning and maintaining healthy hair free of dandruff and parasites. Sikhs comb their hair in the morning before tying a turban, and generally at the end of the day, before sleeping.
3. Kara, Bangle
A kara is an iron or steel ring worn on the wrist of the right arm. Traditionally a kara served as a protective wrist guard during battle when fighting with swords. The kara also serves as a visible reminder of the bond between the Sikh and Guru.
Kes, Uncut Hair
Kes means hair and refers to the hair growing from the scalp. For the initiated Sikh kes includes all facial and body hair. Kes is to be kept completely intact. This means that a Sikh never cuts, removes, or alters any hair or the head face or body. Hair grows to a particular length depending on the genetic code of an individual. Sikhs honor this physical process as the intent of the creator. Many Sikhs testify that kes has a spiritual significance during meditation and worship.
Kirpan, Ceremonial Short Sword
A kirpan is a ceremonial short sword worn by an initiated Sikh. It represents the ideal of the Sikh warrior to defend the weak from tyranny, injustice, and forced conversion. Historically the kirpan would have been a weapon used in battle. The significance of the kirpan extends to a personal battle fought with ego and is a reminder to be vigilant against the rise of anger, attachment, greed, lust, and pride. A kirpan is touched to prashad, and to langar, before either are consumed, to bless and symbolically impart the strength steel of steel to worshipers.

Sharing an incident that happened with me a couple of days back. I was listening to Gur Iqbal Singhji's Kirtan and he narrated a very interesting experience.
He was asked by his son, S. AmanDeep Singh to call up a gentleman with whom they had a very serious mis-understanding and the issue had blown out of proportion. To resolve the situation Gur Iqbal Singhji's son requested him to personally call him and work out a solution. Gur Iqbal Singhji said, that he would call him in a short while.
Meanwhile, his son got restless and again requested him to please call up. Gur Iqbal Singhji again re-assured his son that he would do so soon.
After waiting for a while, his son got impatient and worried. "Why are you not calling him up - you know that things will really go out of hand, if we delay"
Gur Iqbal Singh ji requested him to bear with him for another 5 minutes and then finally made the call. The matter was resolved instantly as if the matter was not an issue at all.
Young S. AmanDeep Singh could not not believe that how could such a complicated matter get resolved so easily and also was very curious about why his father had delayed making this call.
GurIqbal Singhji explained that he too was very worried about this matter. "I too did not have the confidence to make the call. But I had complete faith in Akaal Purakh Waheguru and had done 5 recitations of the mool mantar before making the call".
"I knew that even before I make my call, my Waheguru's Call would reach there and my problem would be resolved by my Guru"

Several years ago, a gyanee from out-of-town accepted a call to a Gurdwara in canada
Some weeks after he arrived, he had an occasion to ride the bus from his home to the downtown area. When he sat down, he discovered that the driver had accidentally given him a quarter too much change. As he considered what to do, he thought to himself, "You'd better give the quarter back. It would be wrong to keep it." Then he thought, "Oh, forget it, it's only a quarter. Who would worry about this little amount?
Anyway, the bus company lets too much fare; they will never miss it.
Accept it as a gift from Vaheguru and keep quiet.
When his stop came, he paused momentarily at the door, then he handed the quarter to the driver and said, "Here, you gave me too much change."
The driver, with a smile, replied, "Aren't you the new Gyanee in town? I have been thinking a lot lately about going somewhere to worship. I just wanted to see what you would do if I gave you too much change. I ' ll see you at gurdwara on Sunday."
When the Gyanee stepped off of the bus, he literally grabbed the nearest light pole, held on, and said, "Oh Vaheguru, I almost sold your Son for a quarter." Our lives are the only Teachings some people will ever read. This is a really scary example of how much people watch us as Sikhs and will put us to the test! Always be on guard -- and remember -- You carry the name of Guru ji on your shoulders when you call yourself "sikh."
