News Khabran / Saudi Arabia could be bankrupt by 2020 – IMF
« on: November 09, 2015, 08:35:28 AM »
The Middle East’s biggest economy, Saudi Arabia may run out of financial assets within the next five years if the government maintains its current policies, warns the International Monetary Fund.
Saudi Arabia is expected to run a budget deficit of 21.6 percent in 2015 and 19.4 percent in 2016, according the IMF’s latest regional economic outlook.

The country needs to adjust spending, the IMF urged.

The IMF outlined two key factors shaping the region’s outlook. They are spreading and deepening regional conflicts and slumping oil prices.

The conflicts have given rise to large numbers of displaced people and refugees, on a scale not seen since the early 1990s, according to the report.

“Achieving fiscal sustainability over the medium-term will be especially challenging given the need to create jobs for the more than 10 million people anticipated to be looking for work by 2020 in the region’s oil exporting countries,” IMF Middle East and Central Asia Department Director Masood Ahmed told journalists after the report’s unveiling in Dubai.

According to the research, many experts suggest low oil prices will remain in place for the foreseeable future.

News Khabran / Haryana cops under scanner for Dalit teen's murder
« on: October 23, 2015, 02:34:04 PM »
CHANDIGARH: Close on the heels of two Dalit children being burnt alive at Sunped village in Faridabad, a 15-year-old Dalit boy, who was charged with theft of a pigeon, was found dead under mysterious circumstances in Haryana's Gohana town today.

According to police, the teenager was found dead at his home in Gohana town in Sonepat district, though the boy's family approached the police alleging that he died while in police custody.

Some members of the 'Gadia lohar' (iron smiths) community had yesterday approached the Sonepat police charging the boy with the theft of a pigeon and demanded appropriate action against him, Superintendent of Police, Sonepat, Abhishek Garg said.

However, the SP said the boy's family has alleged that the teenager had been brought to the police station at Gohana by the 'Lohars' and that he died while in police custody.

Meanwhile, the boy's family today clashed with the police in Gohana and placed the body on the road demanding action against the "erring cops".

Heavy police had been deployed in the area to control the situation.

"According to the preliminary investigations in the case, the boy was found dead at his home today. There was a mark around his neck. A post-mortem examination is underway and once its report comes, we can arrive at the conclusion how he died," Garg said over phone.

Responding to the allegations that he died in police custody, he said, "we have registered a case and will add appropriate sections after the post-mortem report comes. As far as his family's allegations are concerned, we will take appropriate action if any such thing is found true during our investigations".

Officers were called by a member of the public complaining about an unknown item on fire near the median strip of a road in Kingston

A mystery object that appeared to have crashed into the middle of a road in West London, has left police baffled.
Officers were called by a member of the public complaining about an unknown item on fire near the median strip of a road in Kingston.

Initially officers said the item resembled a UFO.
"Officers from Emergency Response Team A were dispatched along with the London Fire Brigade. When the arrived on scene they couldn't believe their eyes!" it said.
"The officers that arrived on scene described the item as looking like a crash landed UFO!"

Further investigation suggested the item could be an upturned pizza oven, but it remained unclear how it came to rest, on fire, in the middle of the road.

In signs of an intensifying crisis for the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) over the repeated desecration of the Guru Granth Sahib, Ramanjit Singh Sikki, the Congress MLA of Khandoor Sahib, resigned from the Assembly on Sunday, while three high-profile SAD members quit their party.
An office-bearer of the Sant Samaj, a pro-SAD association of Sikh preachers, also quit his post.
Calling himself a ‘true Sikh’ in the resignation letter forwarded to the Punjab Speaker, Sikki said he was pained by the desecration incident in Bath village, which falls in his constituency.
“Being a true Sikh and understanding my moral responsibility, I resign from my assembly seat. Kindly accept my resignation,” Sikki, who is in the Amarinder faction of the Congress, wrote in the brief resignation letter.
Khadoor Sahib is in Tarn Taran district, known as Punjab’s panthic district and is a stronghold of the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal. Sikki is the only Congress MLA from the district that has four assembly seats.
The other three are SAD MLAs, while the Lok Sabha member from Khandoor Sahib is also from the ruling party.
The district has been observing a total shutdown over the last four days, and SAD representatives have been
unsuccessful in pacifying the protesters.
Among the three SAD leaders to resign on Sunday, the most high-profile is Sukhdev Singh Bhoura, the SGPC general secretary and one-time close aide of the Akali stalwart, the late Gurcharan Singh Tohra.
Bhoura also resigned from the party’s political affairs committee (PAC).
“ The Sikh panth is supreme of all, not the Akali Dal, Badals or SGPC,” Bhoura said. He also demanded the resignation of Akal Takht jathedar Gurbachan Singh over the reversal of the pardon orders to the Dera head saying “it was too little, too late” and that the situation in Faridkot had gone out of hand.
The two other SAD members to quit are Rajinder Singh Sidhu, the main complainant against Dera Sacha Saudha chief Gurmeet Singh Ram Rahim in the 2007 blasphemy case, and Jaspreet Singh, the recently nominated chief legal adviser and chairman of the the party’s high-powered core committee in the US.
Jaspreet is considered close to Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal.

News Khabran / Sikh community organizes inter-faith langar at mosque
« on: October 17, 2015, 01:34:19 AM »
As tales of communal discord and intolerance continue to dominate the news in India, this story will help restore your faith in humanity.
On October 8, volunteers of Sikh Press Association and Basics of Sikhi organized a langar at the historic Jama Masjid in Amritsar.
Close to 400 people including madrassa students, Sikhs, Christians, and labourers of various faiths were served food that was prepared in the community kitchen on the rooftop of the mosque.
For Jasjit Singh of Basics of Sikhi, it was overwhelming to see lines of religion blur and economic prejudices shatter along the food mile.

As many continue to fight over beef or no beef, Sikhs have shown the world how food can be used to unify different communities.
It is estimated that ordinarily at langar six million meals are distributed every day around the world.

Design is important, and being distraction-free, even more so. There are so many different apps that are constantly competing for our attention that actually getting anything done at all can be a challenge, and the Punkt MP01 mobile phone purports itself to be the answer to this huge problem. All you can do on this phone is call people, send an SMS, save your contacts, mark appointments in the calendar, or set an alarm.

The sales pitch is straightforward; here are the words on Punkt's website:

At long last a beautiful mobile phone that limits distraction and doesn't demand your constant attention. The Punkt. MP01 is an uncomplicated, streamlined device that performs the core mobile phone functions: calling and texting. With no status updates, notifications or multiple alerts, the MP01 focuses on the things that matter. Like communicating

The idea of a distraction free life with a really good looking phone is actually pretty appealing, but one glimpse at the price tag of the Punkt phone might be enough for you to start having second thoughts. To get the phone by Christmas, you'll have to preorder it now, for $329 (approximately Rs. 21,500) with shipping possibly being extra, though it's not mentioned on the Punkt site. Not to mention the duties you will incur when importing the phone to India.

It's at this point that you have to start wondering if you're actually being punked by the Punkt crew. Of course, as a design firm, pricing becomes a little more arbitrary. The Swiss company followed the theme of "technology tamed" for making the MP01, and it has also made a cordless phone, and an analogue alarm clock.

But even so, paying Rs. 22,000 for a feature phone? And that too one that is so chunky and (to us) boring to look at? The Punkt MP01 has an angled back and big round buttons. The menu buttons are the same size as the rest, and are distinguished by being slightly offset, instead of being a different size, or colour. It's an interesting design choice, and also an incredibly annoying one for someone who likes neat lines and grids

News Khabran / Nurse who rushed to save dying man during her wedding shoot
« on: September 22, 2015, 04:34:35 PM »
A nurse who tried to save a dying man during her wedding photoshoot has been dubbed China’s “most beautiful bride” for her heroic efforts.

Guo Yuanyuan was having bridal pictures taken at a seaside resort in the northeast Chinese city of Dalian when the man suffered a heart attack while swimming.

He was dragged to shore but his pulse had stopped.

Wearing her beautiful dress, she rushed to his side and began CPR.

For 20 minutes she battled to save his life, but sadly the man did not regain consciousness.

Her husband-to-be Liu Chuang said he was proud to have such a girlfriend and future wife.

He told local media: "Yuanyuan ran faster than me when we learnt that there was a man who had suffered a sudden heart attack."

Pictures of the incident went viral in China thanks to social networking site Sina Weibo and she earned the nickname “zuimeixinniang”, or the “most beautiful bride".

One user wrote : "It’s a bound duty for medical workers to save people, and the girl has shown her sense of responsibility and professionalism."

Another said: "Her husband is so lucky to have such a beautiful and kind-hearted wife."

In China it is common for couples to have wedding photos taken before the ceremony takes place.

News Khabran / Dislike' button coming to Facebook
« on: September 16, 2015, 02:26:56 PM »
Facebook is to add a "dislike" button to its social network, founder Mark Zuckerberg has said.
In a Q+A session held at Facebook's headquarters in Menlo Park, California, the 31-year-old said the button would be a way for people to express empathy.
He said Facebook was "very close" to having it ready for user testing.
A "dislike" button has been constantly requested by some users since the introduction of the now-iconic "like" button in 2009.
"People have asked about the 'dislike' button for many years," Mr Zuckerberg told the audience on Tuesday.
"Probably hundreds of people have asked about this, and today is a special day because today is the day that I actually get to say we are working on it, and are very close to shipping a test of it."
However he went on to say he did not want it to be a mechanism with which people could "down vote" others' posts.
Instead, it will be for times when clicking "like" on "sad" posts felt insensitive.

BEIJING: Chinese and Italian transplant specialists are planning to conduct the world's first human head transplant surgery on a Russian computer scientist that they claim would change the course of human history by curing incurable medical conditions.

Italian Sergio Canavero will partner with Chinese surgeon Ren Xiaoping at a hospital affiliated to Harbin Medical University to carry out the operation.

Ren triggered public debate after successfully transplanting the head of a mouse to another's body in 2013.

He announced plans to perform the operation on primates this year. His team has since performed nearly 1,000 head transplants on mice.

Tech Lounge / Nokia C1 Android Smartphone
« on: September 08, 2015, 09:20:20 AM »

Earlier this year Nokia confirmed that it plans to return to the smartphone business, and soon after, revealed it was looking for a 'world-class partner' to manufacturing, sales, and marketing of the product. While the company is contractually barred from selling, or manufacturing smartphones until Q4 2016, a bunch of leaked images tip that the company has already started to work on an Android-powered smartphone.

Live images of what appears to be the long-rumoured Nokia C1 have reportedly leaked (pictured below) on the Web, revealing a similar design to the Xiaomi Mi 4i handset, and a standard camera setup on the back. Separately, an alleged press render of the handset was leaked last week (pictured above), in line with the live images and also showing an iPhone-esque speaker grille at the bottom, also seen on the Nokia N1 tablet released earlier this year. Newer reports however point to the render image being fake.

Happy Birthday to Gujjar No. 1

Mumbai: Actress Sonakshi Sinha said she made a mistake in judging Sarabjit Singh, who was arrested for allegedly harassing a Delhi University student in West Delhi's Tilak Nagar, and has apologised to the youth.

The girl uploaded Sarabjit's photograph on Facebook and wrote about the alleged incident in a post, which went viral, with many slamming the guy.
Days later, a man, claiming to be an eyewitness in the case, said the girl fabricated the story.
Sonakshi says she feels embarrassed to have supported the girl earlier.
"Being a girl, gave the benefit of doubt to her, like many others! And like many others I am embarrassed and let down! Apologies to the guy. Admitting a mistake and apologising doesn't make anyone a smaller person... Thats what I've been taught!"

Sarabjit, 26, has been granted bail.
