Nano matches Mercedes in Punjab

World’s cheapest car Nano is finding equal favour in Punjab, which is a lucrative market for high-end cars like Mercedes Benz, BMW and Audi.

Tata Motors Ltd territory manager Manoj Arora said, “Our seven dealers in Punjab sold about 1,500 forms on the very first day of unveiling the car in the region.” The forms will be available to the remaining dealers in a couple of days. Apart from Tata dealers, the forms would be available at select 97 branches of the State Bank of India at major cities in the Chandigarh circle, he added.

“We simply can’t tell it, you have to visit the showroom and see for yourself,” is how Rohit Kapoor of Automobile Kapoor’s Private Limited, Amritsar, sums up the response for Tata’s dream car. The car was unveiled in Kapoor’s showroom on Thursday, and they have already sold over 200 forms in two days, he claims.

Ludhiana-based Dada Motors too sold around 200 forms in two days. “The response is overwhelming. We have received more than 500 enquiries,” said its process manager Amrit.

Similar excitement was witnessed in other places. While Mehta Motors, the dealers for Tata Motors in Bhatinda, sold around 100 forms in two days, Cargo Motors of Jalandhar, could sell 50 forms during the period.

State Bank of India, chief general manager (Chandigarh circle) Ajay Swaroop said the bank expected its auto loan portfolio to increase five per cent with the launch of Nano. Of the total 300,000 forms available in Chandigarh and Punjab for the first booking to be started from April 9, 50 per cent would be available at the SBI branches.

Last year, the bank provided finance for 9,500 passenger cars worth Rs 280 crore in the region comprising Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and J&K.
