Punjab Roadways on recovery path

LUDHIANA: It seems that Punjab Roadways has started moving on the right track with a decline in the huge losses they incurred for the past few
years. There was a time when their losses were around Rs 106 crore in the financial year 2005-06, but during this financial year the loss has been reduced to almost three times at Rs 30 crore.

Punbus, which is also part of Roadways bus service, has been a major factor behind this turnaround as it has been showing increasing revenue with each passing year. In the year 2005-06 its revenue was around Rs 11.96 crore, in 2006-07 it increased to Rs 18.60 crore, and in the year 2007-08 it increased to Rs 28.26 crore.

According to sources, Punjab Roadways had been running in losses due to the dilapidated condition of its buses and in spite of generating revenue they had to spend huge amount of money on maintenance of the buses. For every kilometre run, the department was spending around Rs 35 on maintenance of one bus, which resulted in huge losses. But after the launch of Punbus the transport authorities have been generating good revenue.

Mandeep Singh, director transport, said that with each passing year they were trying to generate good revenue due to sertain measures taken by the department.

He informed that the the profitability has primarily been due to revenue generated by Punbus. He said Punbus was providing buses on several routes in the state and passengers were preferring to travel in these buses as they find it more comfortable.
