Anger mounts as Oz image takes a hit
20 assaults in 30 days in Sydney alone; Indians seek action

Melbourne, May 30
Anger among Indian students here is growing in the wake of recent assaults that left a youth from the community battling for life after being stabbed and another badly burnt following a petrol bomb attack.

Television footage of 25-year-old Shravan Kumar, who was stabbed with a screwdriver by a group of teenagers, battling for life in a hospital here sent shock waves among the 95,000-strong Indian student community in Australia which sought stern action against the culprits.

The Federation of Indian Student Association (FISA) in Victoria has called for a peace rally here tomorrow in response to the growing anger in the community against increasing hate crimes.

“The purpose is to create an awareness about an increasing number of hate crimes within the state (of Victoria) and to promote racial harmony and peace,” FISA said in a statement.

The statement came as an Indian student, 25-year-old Rajesh Kumar, suffered 30 per cent burns after a suspected petrol bomb was hurled at him in his home in Sydney two days back.

The rally will start from Royal Melbourne Hospital, where Sravan is lying in coma, and conclude at the Victorian Parliament House. A candle-light vigil will also be held in support for the recent victims of crime. A 17-year-old from Glenroy has been charged with attempted murder in connection with the attack on Kumar and his friends. Another student Baljinder Singh, stabbed by two attackers early this week, has been discharged from hospital.

An Indian community leader has revealed that there have been at least 20 incidents of “racial assaults” in Sydney in the past month, but most attacks on Indian students went unreported out of fear. Yadu Singh, a cardiologist, said violent attacks against Indian people are on the rise in Sydney.

The Sydney Morning Herald quoted Singh as saying that there had been more than 100 attacks on Indian students in the past 12 months.According to him, many Indian students feared that lodging a formal report to the police would harm their chances of permanent residency. Meanwhile, under fire over the spate of racial attacks on Indian students, Australia today scrambled to salvage its image as a “safe” destination for education for foreigners. Deputy Prime Minister and Education Minister Julia Gillard, said Australia, where over 4 lakh international students are based, “overwhelmingly is a safe country.” “But I have recognised as minister for education that we need to do more to ensure that students who come to study in Australia from overseas are safe,” she was quoted as saying by ‘Radio Australia.’ — PTI

plz jara ede te v najar maro janta....

The recent attack on him and several other Indian students in Australia has failed to dent the resolve of young Baljinder Singh who is determined to complete his hotel management course in that country.

"I talked to him today. He is better now. Recently, he had applied for permanent residency and hopes to get that. Despite the incident, he will continue his studies and will only come to celebrate Diwali with the family," Mewa Singh, father of the 25-year-old student told PTI over phone from Karnal in Haryana.

He said though the attack on his son had come as a shock to him and the entire family, they would back his decision to continue his studies in Australia. "He is willing to complete his studies and the family has backed him," he said.

When asked if they would allow him to settle down in Australia despite the incident, he said it was for Baljit to decide that.

Describing the attack on his son, he said Baljinder had alighted from a train in Melbourne earlier this week and walked a few steps when he was attacked by two men who apparently wanted to rob him.

"My son agreed to part with his money, but still he was attacked, which is unfortunate," Singh, a veterinary doctor said, adding that the Australian Government should ensure that such incidents do not recur.

Meanwhile, as a large number of students from Chandigarh and Punjab study in Australia, their parents have been making frantic calls to know about their welfare.

"My son is pursuing MBA in Australia. I talked to him today and he is fine, though a bit worried after the incidents," said an anxious parent.

Australia remains a favourite destination for students from the region.

Hi Sat shri akal saryea nu
mai veer ji ithe australia wich rehna aa .
menu ithe 3 saal ho gaye ne
veere mei ik gal jaanda
Indian Students are Easy target for the Scrags or what you call White Trash..

these people know indian student those who come to australia got lots of money, they got nice gadgets, Ipods and good mobile phones. they are easy target. bunch of these scrags will hold them up by starting conversation as" Have you got a smoke?" if they say no than they start to use offensive language and starts to beat them up.

Its just disgrace to aussie community that no one would help.
Even if police comes at that incident wont say anything and start to write stories on piece of paper.
yesterday
30 may 2009, you can see on youtube, lots of our indian students gathered together and protested against this incident of indians being bashed up.
I think its gonna continue today too.
hope things get little better.
i;ll keep you updated everyone rab rakha sareya da

sat shri akal veere ji and rani ji

veere asi ithe darr ke nahi rehnde. kuch ik hunde aa jehre darr janda aa.piche jahe mere ik dost di ladai hoi si goreya naal.
avtar mera dost club ch gaya and gore othe si and oh najaij hi garmi kha gaye .oh kehnde aaja tenu dasde aa..
oh fer bahar aya te fone kar dita si..4 gaddiya bhar ke apne punjabi aaye and inne ku gore fadkaye mudd ke othe nahi dise..

Police is hopeless in this country they dont do anything. thats why even aussies call them " A## clowns"
they caught the guy who was bashed up by under 18 guys in train. and they left them saying they are underage..! thats what made it worst among desis on the streets.
