Another Proud Moment For India.

Anamika Veeramani, 14, won the celebrated competition Friday by correctly spelling the word "stromuhr." The Indian-American girl from the central state of Ohio will receive more than $40,000 in cash and prizes.

Stromuhr is listed in few standard English dictionaries, and Veeramani was not required to know its definition in order to win. A stromuhr is a medical instrument used to measure the flow of blood.

Anamika kept a serious expression all the way through the competition, until she finally cracked a smile when she received her trophy. She is the third Indian-American in a row to win the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

Anamika advanced to the final round after correctly spelling a word, "juvia," which eliminated her last three rivals. A juvia is a Brazil nut.

With the spelling bee receiving prime-time coverage on American television, the competition has taken on some new entertaining features. Words have been presented in humorous sentences, like, "The phillumenist had a hard time obtaining fire insurance on his storage unit."

A phillumenist is a person who collects matchbooks

Wow, these Indians are super. :won:

When I was young I could never spell "philatelic", I knew what it was but couldn't get my head around the spelling. I knew what it was because when I was very young I actually took part in Royal Mail philately. My God; it almost sounds like a sexual act (pardon my British sense of humour) X_X But I did collect stamps for a while until I got utterly bored of it and swiftly grew up. :happy:

I think this was telecasted on ABC Channel the day after the Lakers/Celtics game. I missed it.

But this isn't the first time Indian Americans have won a spelling bee. The list is long. I don't know what it is about Indians that make them so good at spelling bees lol.

Yes, Grenade Singh u r right this is not first time...this is happening 3rd time consecutevly..
Indian-Americans comprise less than 1 percent of the U.S. population according to 2000 census data, but they have an impressive bee winning streak — taking the trophy in eight of the past 12 years.

Rest..London Punjabiji..I am very bad in spellings and Pronunciation even now..more in spellings.. :sad:
