Indian Student Stabbed to Death in Australia
« on: January 03, 2010, 07:43:10 PM »

Age: 21

An Indian youth was on Sunday stabbed to death by unidentified assailants here, becoming the first victim to succumb to injuries amid a string of racial attacks on the community members in Australia.

Nitin Garg, 21, who migrated from Jagraon in Punjab and had permanent residency in Australia, was stabbed in the abdomen in a park while on his way to a restaurant, where he worked part-time. He staggered into the restaurant at about 10 pm local time on Saturday and pleaded for help before collapsing. Garg, who on a previous occasion also was beaten up by a group of men at the Newport Railway Station, was taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital, where he later died.

Varinder Kumar, the victim’s uncle, said, “Nitin had gone to Australia for higher education some three years ago. He would study by day and work part-time in a food chain called Hungry Jack’s.”

Government Reaction:

The Indian government has reacted angrily to the stabbing murder of an Indian man in Melbourne at the weekend.

Australian permanent resident Nitin Garg was stabbed in a park at West Footscray as he walked to work at a nearby fast food outlet.

The 21-year-old staggered to the fast food store before he collapsed. He died later in hospital.

The Indian government says the killing of the accounting graduate has generated deep anger and could affect bilateral ties with Australia.

News of the stabbing has received widespread coverage on Indian television.

External affairs minister SM Krishna has condemned the attack and says stringent action must be taken.

"This heinous crime on humanity, this is an uncivilised brutal attack on innocent Indians," he said.

"It certainly will have some bearing on the bilateral ties between our two countries."

One of Mr Garg's relatives is expected to travel to Melbourne in the next week, to collect his body and return it to the family's home state of Punjab in northern India.

His uncle Parmod Kumar has expressed his shock at news of the attack

Mr Kumar, from the Indian state of Punjab, says the Federal Government must protect the many other Indians studying and working in Australia.

"It is very bad, very bad news," he said. "This should not happen, but you should also take care of the other boys also."

Federation of Indian Students of Australia spokesman Gautam Gupta says the Federal Government is in denial and students are fearful.

"There is extreme shock and fear and anger and a lot of frustration at the inaction of various levels of government," he said.

"It's amazing. People are being attacked here and the government just wants to blame the victims."

Mr Gupta says many attacks on Indian students are not opportunistic crimes.

"Most of the attacks do not happen at night," he said. "There were five attacks that have personally come to FISA in the last 10 days or so, four of them happened in the daytime."

Victorian police say there is no evidence to suggest the killing was racially motivated attack and say drawing conclusions at this stage may interfere with the investigation.

But previous attacks have already dented the $15 billion-a-year overseas student market.

Tourism Australia has predicted a 20 per cent drop in the number of Indians studying in Australia this year.

A spokesman for Acting Foreign Affairs Minister Simon Crean says Indians are welcome guests and the Federal Government utterly condemns the latest violence.
