SAN FRANCISCO, CA (KP) — Respect for Guru Granth Sahib Campaign, North America was notified that a Sindhi temple based in Jackson Heights, NY was doing parkash of Sri Guru Granth Sahib alongside pictures and statues of Hindu deities in the same complex. Satya Narayan Mandir which organizers claim is “a place to worship together” also offers services such as Sehaj Path Sahib and Akhand Path Sahib at the mandir and at homes of devotees.

Panthic maryada and Sri Akal Takht Sahib guidelines forbid the parkash of Sri Guru Granth Sahib at any places of worship other than Sikh Gurdwaras. The practice of installing Guru Granth Sahib along with pictures and statues is also unacceptable, as Guru Granth Sahib’s message clearly condemns the worship or reverence of artifacts. It has also come to the notice of the Respect for Guru Granth Sahib Campaign that statues of Guru Nanak Dev Ji are also installed at the temple.

In addition to Sikh ceremonies, the temple also offers other services which are not in line with Gurmat, and also makes its facilities available to the community at ‘reasonable rates.’ Discourses on Bhagwad Gita are delivered daily at the premises, while asa-ki-vaar and hanuman chalisa are recited on a weekly basis. On a monthly basis, the temple also organized ‘Satya Naryan Puja’ and ‘Bahrano’ (special services for the full moon).

Hindu baptism, ‘mundan’ (hair shaving) and other rituals are also carried out at the temple’s premises.

The Respect for Guru Granth Sahib Committee, North America (www.satkar.org) has appealed to the New York Sangat to contact the Sindhi Temple and remove parkash of Guru Granth Sahib from this Hindu mandir immediately and assure that such beadbi is not repeated again at that mandir.

It should be mentioned that the Sikh Community does not oppose the ceremonies of other communities and faiths but the reverence of Guru Granth Sahib Ji is the utmost important concern of the Sikhs and Sikh practices do not allow the parkash of Guru Sahib at Hindu mandirs.

Jehde lokan ne eh mandir banaya pehlan tan ohna nu apeyi sochna chahida. Guru Granth Sahib ji vich buttan/moortiya di pooja, aarti, te fokke reet rivajan nu khandan keeteyo aa ke ehna naal tuhanu rabb prapat nahi hona. Te fer ohi loki kidhan Guru Granth Sahib ji nu naal rakh sakde aa. Two conflicting ideologies that do not go together.

I am gonna quote and make a comment on this.. ok so we agree that its wrong to have pictures along w/ sggsj?
but what about pictures of our Gurus in our Gurudwaras aswell? Isnt that equaly wrong as well then?
and about having sggsj at any other plaves of worship other than gurudwaras.. what about ppl who keep it at home?
te rahi gall parbaat feri being done by mandir ppl.. as long as they r bringing awareness about our gurus and their teachings... i think its alright :-)

Panthic Weekly did not do justice to the Sikh rehat Maryada, here's how the maryada goes (please note the bold lines):

Nor should the festival of any other faith be allowed to be celebrated inside the Gurdwara. I think the above pasted maryada answers a lot of your questions, but you may say the Maryada does not apply to non-Sikhs. So I will make my points again:
- Having pictures or not having pictures is not the issue. Pictures facilitate religious practice on a visionary level (which is sort of fake, but people find it helpful in reaching God, so I won't say it's wrong). Only Worshipping idols/pictures is the issue (I will present this issue according to Guru Granth Sahib ji at the end).
- Guru Granth Sahib ji is can be kept at anywhere, provided that it is kept in respect. The sikhs are the custodians (the lowly-students) of the Guru, we want to keep the Guru Granth Sahib ji at a place that meets it's standard (i.e. what it says inside). It would be disrespectful to keep alcohol (forbidden according to Guru Granth Sahib ji) nearby, similarly, it would be disrespectful to keep idols (forbidden according to Guru Granth Sahib ji).
- I have respect for Sindhis. I have respect for Hindu religion, or any other religion. I bow in front of the 15 Hindu and Muslim saints that wrote Gurbani inside Guru Granth Sahib ji. I want to treat my Guru with respect and want to politely ask others to treat it with the same respect. Guru Granth Sahib ji's message is universal brotherhood, but this does not mean that some parts of Guru Granth Sahib ji can be ignored, while others prayed to.

Finally, I want to quote a part of Guru Granth Sahib ji that goes against idol worship. After reading this quote by Guru Nanak Dev ji, how can one allow for idol worship to happen if they want to follow Guru Granth Sahib ji. It would be hypocritical:

question is... were there pictures and paintings at that time too or it was idols only?

because idols are basically 3d pictures at the end of it...
