A very serious issue for Punjab, for Indian farmers in general, indeed. Not only Punjab , farmers in Andhra go through the same issue. I have a read a few articles on the issue by Shergill, Gill regarding the issue and there is a need for serious policy modifications.

Just for the initial cultivation they have to borrow money so they could invest in their farm, bijli paani ghar da kharch everything adds up and leaves them with no choice.
Understand the situation of these farmers, over the years after the green revolution the productivity of the Wheat and Rice in particular has gone up. Since these farmers are hardworking people they are able to produce a surplus despite the floods and other circumstances they face. The cost of the production has gone up but due to the surplus of wheat, the profits haven't, some of these farmers is forced to sell below MSP just to make the ends meet.
Sara sara season aa bandey mehnat karde aa, te fer us mehnat da mull na pave, its sad. For a killa that's worth 50 lakhs all they make is 50k a year, no wonder these people are so inclined to sell their lands and move out. Punjab has no industry that is strong enough to support the youth. Har ek bande nu shaunk hunda ke odi dhee puttar aish karan wadde hoke, what options do these people have, and just to stay up to the par with society they take out more debt, another reason they suffer.
