It means "lion" and it was introduced by the Sikh Gurus to eradicate the practice of casteism, though today castes and discrimination based on castes still exists amongst Sikhs. All Sikhs were encouraged to accept Singh as their last name, though not all Singhs are Sikhs. People belonging to the Rajput and some other communities also use Singh as their last name.
Singh comes from the sankskrit word Nsringhadeva, literally translating to Lion.
Singh is an nickname and mane found in sikhs names. It means lion or tiger. It reminds the world of the sacrifices and bravery of the Sikh Gurus.
