  *** MALWUYEE ( malawi) GIDHA***

Malwuyee Gidha is not a female dance as the name gidha might infer but it is a male dance. It originated in Malwa and more specifically Moga, Faridkot area where young and old villagers after a day of hard work in the fields would get together in one corner outside the village in open space and will sing boliyaN and dance in a pretty much free style while making rythm from dholl as well the farming tools that they have with them like kayee(shovel), ramba(small digging tool), their gandhasay, kohaaRiyaN etc.....It was more popular amongst old males than younger ones. Old guys with white flowing beards would sing and dance to the self made tunes. All the guys would get together in a circle and one will get in the center and sing some long boli mostly depicting their hard days work, failed romance or some other day to day subject.

After every line of his boli the guys in the circle will say something encouraging like "shaava" "balle" etc and when he repeats the last line of the boli which will be the climax of the boli many others will step inside the circle and dance and sing and shout while moving their working tools mentioned above in rythm. With their white flowing beards and dancing in cirlces being one with their souls, they all most present the scene of sufis dancing on the qawaalis at the mazaars of dead sufi saints.

Those days of working hard all day and then enjoying the evenings are gone. Younger generation is more tuned to TV and wine while the old ones with white beards somehow have forgotten how to enjoy life and are instead busy trying to please the unseen, the unfelt gods and some jannat/sawarag aspirations.
The instruments used in the Malwai Giddha are not merely for show. The performer has to play it in rhythm. The performer needs to know not only how to play the instrument but also the way to carry it. The instruments are decorated.

The folk instruments used in Malwai Giddha are:

Chimta, Tumbi, Sap, Buckchu, Gadvi-Chhitar, Kato, Kartara, Dholki

I REALLY LIKE THE ELECTRIFYING ENERGY IN THIS DANCE... :balle: :balle:

Here's one Sarabjeet Cheema's Video...over Malwai Gidha...

Sarbjit Cheema-Malwai Gidha (Only Folk)

I really respect Sarbjeet Cheema for his great contribution in Punjab Folk Dances..

Next one... Sammi

Sammi is one such exquisite folk dance that originated from Pakistan’s Sandal Bar region and is shrouded in ancient Indian mythology. It is a sensual, flirtatious dance performed in unison, meaning that all the movements are coordinated and executed the same way by all the women. Danced in a circular manner, the women add to the rhythm through hand claps, and all sing together in unison, led by a solo woman who initiates each line of the lyrics.

The sammi is danced on the plateau of Upper Punjab and is also the name of the tune and folk song linked to it. Originally danced under the full moon by unmarried girls, it is now danced separately by both men and women. Clapping of hands in time to the beat of the drum, dancers form a circle while verses from the ancient sammi song are sung to its tune. The dance starts in a slow and measured manner, gently speeding up as it progresses.

The fairy dancers of the court of lord Indira are reputed to have taught the technique of Giddha and Sammi to the girls of this earth. The fairy which taught Giddha was known as Giddho while the one who taught Sammi was named as such. This kind of dance form is popular in Sandal Bar which now is in Pakistan. Sammi has not been able to gain popular acceptanceand is breathing its last in the huts of the tribals. Women of Baazigars, Rai Sikhs, Lobanas and Sansi lot tribes dance in this medium. This is also danced in the privacy of women.

The dancers dress in bright coloured kurtas and full flowing skirts called lengas. A particular silver hair ornament is associated with this dance. In the middle of their head they fix a domed ornament shaped like an inverted lotus called phul-chowk or Saggiphul (flower of the crossings of the plaits). Sammi has not been able to gain popular acceptance and is breathing its last in the huts of the tribals.
No instrument is required as an accompaniment to this dance. Rythem is kept up with the beating of the feet and clapping.

Here's Video of "Sammi"...dance..will tell u more about this..

For Today..                            "JHUMAR"

Jhumar is a male dance Performed in the area between Ravi & Chenab. It is a slow & natural dance performed with full intoxication & imitating the actions of ladies.ting the movements of sowing and reaping the harvest and of gaits of animals and birds.Jhumar comes from Jhum - which means swaying. The songs evoke a quality which reminds of "Swaying". Though the content of these songs is varied- they are usually love with emotional songs too. The Jhummar is a dance of ecstasy.

Performed exclusively by men, It is a common feature to see three generations - father, son and grandson - dancing all together. The dance is without acrobatics. The movement of the arms only is considered its main forte. Toes are musically placed in front and backwards and turnings are taken to the right, sometimes the dancers place their one hand below the ribs on the left and gesticulate with the right hand. This dance does not tire out its performers and it is normally danced on moonlight nights in the villages away from the habitation. The dancers of this dance let-off a sound, "dee dee" in tune with the beat of the dance which adds to its grace.

This dance is performed in harvest season. Although it is very similar to Bhangra dance. In this form of dance there is  recreation of the gaits of animals and birds.
After the partition of the Panjab most of the practioners of Jumar moved away, but Phokhar Singh (1916-2002) learned Jhummar from his uncle and had danced it since. Before his death he taught the dance to students at D.A.V college, Jalalabad, Punjab.

There are three main types of jhummar, each of which has a different mood, and is therefore suited to different occasionally, reason of its predominating mood. They are: three main types of Jhumar..satluj jhummar, Beas jhummar ,Chenab jhummar
