Meaning of Punjab The Punjab
In Greek its called -  Pentapotamia,

But was deriven from two Persian words, panj (five), an aab (water).

Location of Punjab
Punjab is a region that encompasses Northern India and the East side of Pakistan. Punjab is bounded on the north by the vast Himalyan ranges, which divide it from China, Tibet and Kashmir; on the east by the river Jamna, the North-Western Provinces and the Chinese Empire; on the south by Sind, the river Sutlej, which separates it from Bahawalpur, and Rajputana; and on the west by the Sulaiman range, which divides it from Biluchistan, and Afghanistan, which joins the Khaibar.

Five Rivers of Punjab
Five rivers decend from Himalayas and then decends into the Great Indus

All the five rivers runs between Indus and Jamna and are named:

* Jhelum
* Chenab
* Ravi
* Bias
* Sutlej

Note: As in Map, Punjab has 6 rivers but Indus is ignored when the name was devoloped for Punjab

Whao Just look at the map.. So amazing!!

Now just to look back at who were the first one in Punjab

We go back to 3000 BC

First known People are: The Aborigines of Punjab
It is generally accepted that the aborigines lived in caves and on the marshes of river banks. Their language was simple, they lived in small numbers and in isolated communities, and they generally wore animal skin to cover their bodies. Larger groups formed small tribes and became owners of flocks. The aborigines had little knowledge of the properties of metals, and used stones, clubs, and spears as hunting weapons.

Second one is: Indus Valley Civilization (dated 3000 BC)
- it was thought to have been confined to the valley of the river Indus
- it was a highly developed towns, Mohenjodaro and Harappa, represent the high watermark of the settlements
      -  By about 1700 BC, the Harappan culture was on the decline, due to repeated flooding of towns located on the river banks and ecological changes which forced agriculture to yield to the spreading desert

Whao..nice thread..I Like dances..So little bit about that..

Punjabi Folk dances Origin is  still not revealed...Like Theses dances r centuries old..Its histoy can be discovered from RIG VEDA too..where u can read about dances performed by pairs in circle as We do In Gidha.and others.
Even Bhangra is pleaseantry dance but its roots rhave been linked to Lord Shiva, Dravidian Culture..Rest like Sammi is linked to worship of fire..SAMMI means- Tree of Jand..in Ancient time Hindus believed that fire result from rubbing Sammi scared...So In ancient time Fire was worshiped as god And SAMMI was used to perform around Tree Of Jand to make God Happy..this conception can be varified from these lines as

"SAMMI MERE WANAAH DI"

So this is about very ancient times..very traditional origin..Rest there is lot about modern history..I have lot to talk about this..but would like to discuss in my another post..PUNJABI FOLK DANCES :happy:

In the last Main Folk Dances Of punjab..

Gidha, Bhangra, Kikli, Jhumar, Malawi Gidha, Dhamal, Dandas, Sammi, Ludi,Juli, Jago, Teeyan.. :happy: :balle:

KUDRAT GREWAL writes::: """"Even Bhangra is pleaseantry dance but its roots rhave been linked to Lord Shiva, Dravidian Culture.."""""

Bhangra the origin is very simple. It was born in the fields of the Punjab. At the end of a hard day the men folk who were mainly the lower caste farmhands used to get pretty merry and sing songs and dance.

But the name itself comes from “Bhang” meaning cannabis or “hemp” and “ra” in Bhangra comes from the word “ragra” which means to rub or rubbing or grinding motion. They used to rub the hemp leaves in the palms of their hands and smoke the resin which was left on said palms of said hands. I have seen it done in India many times. Their musical instruments were very simple. A “toombi” (a single string instrument made from a small pumpkin like vegetable) for the sophisticated and a Dholki (double sided drum) and the tall "dhol" drum were all they needed. Hey presto, you have a party on your hands!!!

Even the Pathans of Afghanistan had similar dances to Bhangra. They were observed dancing such moves in order to pass the time away whilst serving sentences in Maharaja Ranjit Singh’s Jails in Lahore and Multan.

I’m afraid Shiva had nothing to do with it.

Sometimes it's funny we can connect stuff to other stuff so far back. Like we can connect every human/race down to Africa, where the homo sapien species started. (Just another view to add to your discussion about the start of Bhangra.) I have no doubt that the Bhangra that Shiva may have done is much much different than the Bhangra that we know and love. I'm not trying to take anything away from Shiva, but just bringing about some views as to how I see this.

I wonder how old that map in Jhanda Amli’s second post is. If you look at the little key at the bottom explaining the religions there is a trishul for Hindus, a Crescent and Star for Muslims, a Swastika for the Buddhists and a Triangle for the Pre-Historic folk (ha ha).

According to that map the Sikhs did/do not exist. How odd; I could have swore the Sikhs ruled the place for many a year.

Hmm..I agree. Plus what Lord Shiva did is called Tandav. His angry dance or something. It's quite different from bhangra.

But I guess things evolve.

I wud like to try to answer this question..London Punjabi if u dont mind..

In the Vedic Era, Punjab was called ‘Sapat Sindu’. Sapat Sindu means the land of seven rivers - the Sindu, Jehlum, Ravi, Chenab, Beas, Satluj and Yamuna. The Mughals persianised its name by calling it ‘Panj – Aab’ or -the land of five rivers- excluding Sindhu and Yamuna.
In 450 BC (2450 years ago), Alexander invaded Punjab and conquered the mighty Punjabi king named Porus whose kingdom was on the banks of river Chenab. He did not accept defeat and asked Greek king to show him the same respect as is due to the royal kings. He was restored back to his throne by Alexander. Alexander returned to Greece right before crossing the river Beas, as his forces refused to fight

The history of Punjab goes back to the times of Indus Valley civilization or the arrival of the Aryans. Lord Rama is also said to have been born at a place called Ghuram, now in Patiala district. Lord Sri Krishna delivered the immortal message of the Gita at Kurukshetra, which was well within the boundary of Punjab till very recently.

Sikh religion came into existence in early 15th century. The Sikhs became strong enough to rule the area of Punjab by 1760s.Ranjit Singh was crowned on April 12, 1801 (to coincide with Baisakhi). Sahib Singh Bedi, a descendant of Guru Nanak Dev, conducted the coronation . Gujranwala served as his capital from 1799. In 1802 he shifted his capital to Lahore and Amritsar.He gained more and more territory every year he ruled Punjab for 40 years.

Therfore, We can Conclude this map must be made before 15th centuary or 18th century most proable before 18th century..
