Rotary Engine and its working
« on: May 24, 2010, 08:38:50 AM »
Rotary Engine and its working

A pistonless rotary engine is an internal combustion engine that does not use pistons in the way a reciprocating engine does, but instead uses one or more rotors, sometimes called rotary pistons. An example of a pistonless rotary engine is the Wankel engine.

The term rotary combustion engine has been suggested as an alternative name for these engines to distinguish them from early (generally up to the early 1920s) aircraft engines and motorcycle engines also known as rotary engines. However, both continue to be called rotary engines and only the context determines which type is meant. In particular, the only commercial producer of (pistonless) automobile rotary engines as of 2005, Mazda, consistently refers to its Wankel engines as rotary engines

Working

A rotary engine is an internal combustion engine, like the engine in your car, but it works in a completely different way than the conventional piston engine.

In a piston engine, the same volume of space (the cylinder) alternately does four different jobs -- intake, compression, combustion and exhaust. A rotary engine does these same four jobs, but each one happens in its own part of the housing. It's kind of like having a dedicated cylinder for each of the four jobs, with the piston moving continually from one to the next.

However, what is amazing about Felix Wankel’s engine is that the piston does not travel up and down like normal engine pistons do, or for that matter in and out as boxer engine pistons do; it spins and its unique triangular shape does the jobs as mentioned in the opening post and as demonstrated in the video.

Ya man, if you look at the Mazda RX8 engine you'll see how tiny it is and yet the RX8 will hit 0-60mph in about 6secs. Not bad for a single cylinder.

I drove one here in the UK last6 year, it's not bad but the fuel efficiency aint that good, your right. But I do like the suicide  doors on it.

But talking about cars, I drove a Maserati Gran Turismo. I kid you not it is one of theeeeeee finest cars I have ever driven. I have a Jaguar XKR at the moment but that Maserati is something else.

Here's the link for Maserati

The XKR is 2008, black hard top. I bought a used one last year, it only had 16,000 miles on the clock. UK doesn't get enough sunshine for a soft top.

I also have a Mercedes 560SEC 1991. That car is my pride and joy. It is in pristine condition and has an immaculate V8. It’s amazing really; it is 19 year old and still only has 65,000 on the clock. I love that car.

Its 2.15 am here in the UK. I am out.

Take care brother.

Yeah, you are right there brother. I do like cars. But I also like classic cars. My first ever car was a 1978 Alfa Romeo 2 litre Veloce Spider Convertible. Girls used to love it. The stupid thing used to break down all the time

Hi again

No, it was a (if I remember correctly)just an in-line 4 cylinder, 1962cc engine, normally aspirated. It was the "Duetto" model which had a rounded front. It was a really nice car when it ran properly. You really have to own an Alfa to understand how quirky they can be. You really have to belive in God to own one of them.  :rabb:

I have no idea how I attracted the women. I was a student studying away from home. I guess I was a bit carefree. I was also one of the very few Indian guys at Edinburgh Uni at the time. I am sure it wasn't me and it was probably the car. Don’t worry; you’re not supposed to understand the ladies. That’s half the fun.

Hey man, have you ever driven a Lotus? I drove Lotus Exige recently at a race track. It is fantastic. Very light body and a very powerful engine giving it a good power to weight ratio.

Probably, but they are a very good track car and a lot of fun.

I've also got a motorbike which I don't get much chance to ride as I am away from home a lot. Have you ever fancied a bike?

That's good. I had an Enfield in India a couple of years ago but it was a borrowed one from my cousin. I ran it for about six weeks. I loved it.

I have a Harley Davidson Fatboy Screamin’ Eagle which I bought 2 year ago in London. It really is brilliant for cruising on London's Kings Road. The exhaust sounds like a thousand shotguns going off. It turns heads where ever it goes. It has the 1688cc (103.00 cubic inches) engine. It’s not a speed bike. It is just a lovely bike that does exactly what it is supposed to do.
