Hi-tech tablet that will text patients
« on: October 12, 2010, 10:36:54 PM »
A 'smart' pill that texts patients' mobile phones if they forget to take their medication is being tested in the UK.
Around 40 volunteers are being recruited by NHS doctors to take standard versions of their heart pill fitted with a microchip.
The chips in the pills send signals to a patch attached to the patient's shoulder when swallowed.

The Raisin: The system contains a pill with an edible microchip and a
patch that sits on the shoulder which texts information to either the doctor or patient

Technology in the patch monitors when the pills are swallowed and can send a text if the patient forgets to take medication.
The system, known as Raisin, also monitors heart rate, heart activity and how well the patient is sleeping  -  all of which may signal a deteriorating condition.
It costs a few pence per pill and was initially tested in the US, where it improved the rate patients consistently took their medication from 30 per cent to 80 per cent.If successful, the four-month trial being run by Imperial College Healthcare Trust, Imperial College London and the Royal Berkshire Hospital, Reading, could lead to a year-long trial

Professor Nicholas Peters, professor of cardiology at Imperial College Healthcare, said the main aim was encourage heart patients to stick to taking their pills. With a stricter medication regime, it is hoped their health will improve and they will be less likely to be admitted to hospital in an emergency.

The system yesterday received the European Union's CE mark, certifying that it meets consumer and health requirements.
It paves the way for the system to be combined with a range of medicines, and clinical trials have begun in the US with drugs for diabetes, organ transplants, mental health and tuberculosis.

I think we going the opposite way. Technology should be progressive rather than making everyone lazy

- Smartphones apps to make people more dumb

Well in this case... I see other way around
I think...It just gonna improve patients compliance with medication …especially in case the diseases is life threatening if medication is not taken in time ….say in case of Cardiac disease
Its just like the way we set our alarm clocks for the morning of an exam…  to avoid the risk of being late and missing the exam
:dnk:

Yes you are right ji

But Think about this, let say someone elder at your place who takes a daily medication - Why do you think that they didnt need a reminder but our generation or the next generation need a reminder to take a freaking pill - I was calling that as being Dumber (or lazier) with an app.

Or what about ur smartphone is out of batery. So if you dont use the brain or not in a schedule of taking the medication on ur own, you might skip it.

- To understand what I am talking about, you have to an engineer rather than Health people :pagel:  :loll:

I think...they 'll be prescribing to only those who are non complaint.... not everybody  :wait:
and mostly people forget to take their pills.. there are only few...like me :pagel:... who dont keep their phones charged
and if sumbody has really busy schedule and has been recently started on medication... then why not

only negative point am seeing here is that u need to have a smart phone for the operation of this system :loll:

Nice Innovation.. It will be great help for patients suffering from Demnetia.. But i know it will take time to come with technology in market.. because many will stand against new innovations with their arguments.. but its human nature.. people dont like change.. but its great joint venture of Medical and new technology... =D> =D>

Is it really worth it? Healthcare is expensive as it is and then this...

People who aren't going to be compliant, they aren't going to improve just because they're being monitored. It may just increase more anxiety for doc visits and evnetually even reduced offcie visits.

Baaki dementia patients, if they're diagnosed, someone is usally there to help with meds. Jada to jada it'll help diagnose dementia.

Really, when you know you're health is at stake, how hard is it to take a pill.

innovation at its best.
but do we really need it ?
i agree wid jandha that it will make people dumb and lazy...
future is going to be full of machines and automated processes to make people just relax and be more prone to heart diseases.
so there should be some kind of rethinking we need to do.
