Spring-Heeled Jack

Londoners first heard of the terrifying Spring-Heeled Jack in the late fall of 1837. This bogey-man who was rumored to be be able to leap huge hedgerows and breathe flames from his mouth was reguarded by many to be a tall tale. Few believed accounts of the attacks which had this devil carrying off young women into the night. out by the mystery man. However, the rumors persisted as the number of attacks grew.

Spring-Heeled Jack seemed to prefer to leap out on unsuspecting travelers. Usually he would rip their clothes with the claws on his hands, and breathe flames into the victims' faces. Then, with shock still immobilizing his prey, he would bound away in huge, leaping strides which covered great distances at each step.

The thing about the devil-man which most stuck out in the minds of the victims were his terrible, protruding, hellish eyes, and his peculiar ringing laughter. Concerned citizens formed mobs to try and track down the creature and at one point the group included the Duke of Wellington, and Admiral Codrington.

Understandably, Spring-Heeled Jack's ability to leap over huge hedgerows and walls made him extremely difficult to catch. He had also added the act of terrifying coach-drivers to his list of conquests. The attacks reached a climax when, in the winter of 1838, he moved his activities into London itself.

The first of these London attacks took place on a dark February night. Lucy Scales was walking home with her sister from their brother's house when a tall cloaked figure bounded out of the shadows at them. He spat blue flames into Lucy's face, blinding her. As she lay writhing on the ground, Spring-Heeled Jack calmly turned around and melted back into the shadows.

He struck again a few nights later. The Alsop family was spending a quiet evening at home, when a violent knocking was heard at the front door. Jane Alsop got up to answer it. When she opened the door she saw a man standing in the shadows near the front gate. He swung around. "I'm a police officer," he said. "For God's sake, bring me a light, for we have caught Spring-Heeled Jack in the lane!"

When she gave the candle to the man at the gate, she realized she had made a terrible mistake, for the man applied to candle to his breast to reveal the hideous features of Spring-Heeled Jack himself! Jane screamed as he vomited forth a huge amount of flame from his mouth. He then grabbed her and tore at her clothes with his sharp claws.

She tried to get away, but the man caught her and continued his attack. Soon the whole family ran out into the street, hearing her screams, but Spring-Heeled Jack bounded away down the road, and was soon lost to sight.

Spring-Heeled Jack made an aborted attempt at the same trick a few nights later at another house, but a servant boy realized who he was and began to shout for help. Spring-Heeled Jack escaped again, this time victimless.

Throughout the 19th century, Spring-Heeled Jack was sighted all over England. After a brief period of inactivity in the late 1830's he was seen time and time again in the 1840's and 50's.

He frightened army sentries in the 1870's, by darting out of the darkness and slapping their faces with a cold, clammy hand before leaping onto the roofs of their sentry boxes. Angry townspeople shot at him in the streets on night in 1877. As usual, he laughed and melted away into the darkness, unrepentant.

Spring-Heeled Jack was last seen in 1904 in Liverpool. There, he terrified people by bounding up and down the streets and onto their rooftops. When attempts were made to corner him, but simply vanished into the darkness.

Some believe that Spring-Heeled Jack was a demon. Others thing he was a disfigured human. It's even been suggested that he was nothing more than The Marquis of Waterford, who was renowned for his sadistic taste in practical jokes, and his scorn for women.

The mystery of Spring-Heeled Jack may never be solved. Nor will the question of when or if he will return.

The Island of Madness

Poveglia Island is one of many island in the lagoons of Venice, Italy but instead of being a place of beauty, the island is a festering blemish in the shimmering sea and is not only regarded as one of the most haunted locations on the planet, but also one of the most evil places in the world. Today no one visits save to harvest the vineyards. Fishermen even steer clear of the island for fear that they will catch human bones in their nets.

The dark history of Poveglia Island began during the Roman Era when it was used to isolate plague victims from the general population. Centuries later, when the Black Death rolled through Europe it served that purpose again. The dead were dumped into large pits and buried or burned. As the plague tightened its grip, the population began to panic and those residents showing the slightest sign of sickness were taken from their homes and to the island of Poveglia kicking and screaming and pleading. They were thrown onto piles of rotting corpses and set ablaze. Men, women, children... all left to die in agony. It's estimated that the tiny island saw as many as 160,000 bodies during this time.

The island has become a putrid area indeed. The soil of the island combined with the charred remains of the bodies dumped there creating a thick layer of sticky ash. The core of the island is literally human remains that has given the island a loathsome reputation, but appears to be very good for the grapevines that are planted there. Think about that next time you partake of Italian wine!

As if the story was not disturbing enough, it gets worse. In 1922 the island became home to a psychiatric hospital complete with a large and very impressive bell tower. The patients of this hospital immediately began to report that they would see ghosts of plague victims on the island and that they would be kept up at night hearing the tortured wails of the suffering spirits. Because they were already considered mad by the hospital staff, these complaints were largely ignored.

To add to the anguish of the poor souls populating this island hospital, one doctor there decided to make a name for himself by experimenting on his subjects all to find a cure for insanity. Lobotomies were performed on his pitiable patients using crude tools like hand drills, chisels, and hammers. Those patients and even the ones who were not privy to the doctor's special attentions were taken to the bell tower where they were tortured and subjected to a number of inhumane horrors.

According to the lore, after many years of performing these immoral acts, the evil doctor began to see the tortured plague ridden spirits of Poveglia Island himself. It is said that they led him to the bell tower where he jumped (or was thrown) to the grounds below. The fall did not kill him according to a nurse who witnessed the event, but she related that as he lay on the ground writhing in pain, a mist came up out of the ground and choked him to death. It's rumored that the doctor is bricked up in the hospital bell tower and on a still night, the bell can be heard tolling across the bay. The hospital closed down.

For a time, the Italian government owned the island, but it was later sold. That owner abandoned it in the 1960's and was the last person to try and live there. A family recently sought to buy the island and build a holiday home on it but they left the first night there and refused to comment on what happened. The only fact that we do know is that their daughters face was ripped open and required fourteen stitches.

Today Poveglia is uninhabited and tourism to island is strictly forbidden. Every now and then the lapping waves on the shore uncover charred human bones.

Several psychics have visited the island the abandoned hospital, but all of them left scared to death of what they had sensed there. Every now and then daredevils dodge the police patrols to explore the island, but everyone who has made it there have refused to return saying that there is a heavy atmosphere of evil and they the screams and tortured moans that permeate the island make staying there unbearable.

One report from a misguided thrill seeker who fled the island says that after entering the abandoned hospital, a disembodied voice ordered them, "Leave immediately and do not return."

They never did.

The Miracle of Cokeville

Cokeville Wyoming was the sight of a parent's worst nightmare on May 16th, 1986 when a mentally disturbed man and his wife entered an elementary school with guns and a homemade gasoline bomb.

The man's name was David Young, a former town marshal. He had been the tiny's towns only police officer in six months during 1979 and when he was fired, he moved to Tucson, Arizona. He and his wife returned to Cokeville in 1986 and carried out their insidious plan. Young had a manifesto called "Zero-Infiniti" and proclaimed "this is a revolution!" as he and his wife took an entire generation - over 160 children and teachers - hostage and wouldn't release them until he was given 300 million dollars and a personal phone call from the President of the United States.

Keeping all the children in a single room and standing in the middle of it, the Youngs began a standoff that would last 2 1/2 hours. David left the room leaving his wife alone and it was then that the bomb went off instantly killing Doris. Young returned and seeing his wife dead, turned his gun on himself and pulled the trigger.

The miraculous thing is that despite the shooting and the detonation of the bomb, the Youngs were the only casualties. Some children suffered flash burns from the explosion, but all were alive. In the last 20 years, this event has become known as The Miracle of Cokesville.

The story runs deeper. Bomb experts called out to the scene were stunned. They couldn't figure out why the school was still intact when a bomb that size should have obliterated the entire side of the building leaving everyone - the hostage-takers and the hostages - all dead. How was this possible? To this day no one has provided an explanation. The children and teachers were alive and that was all that apparently mattered.

Then the children began to tell stories of angels who appeared to them and instructed them to move to a corner of the classroom because the bomb was about to explode. Some reported seeing beautiful figures in white while others said that they saw long-dead relatives telling them not to be afraid. Many said later that there was an angel in the room for every child and that each was protecting their charge. Some children said that they didn't see anything, but rather heard disembodied voices telling them that the disaster was about to happen and that they would be spared.

All of these stories may seem like a child's fancy had it not been for the miraculous survival of everyone in the room. Adding to the mystery was the fact that on one of the blackened walls covered with shrapnel that somehow misses every child in the room was burned the outline of a human shape with wings.

A bomb that should have leveled a building somehow spared 167 innocent people that stood unprotected in the same room. Did God send down angels to protect them? Were they protected by the loving spirits of relatives? Or was it just a case of blind luck that only the hostage takers met there end on that day?

The only thing that can be said for certainty is that - through divine will or incredible chance - Cokeville was the sight of a miracle.

The Moving Rocks of Racetrack Playa

Racetrack Playa, nestled between the Cottonwood Mountains to the east and the Last Chance Range to the West, is a seasonally dry lake in the northern part of the Panamint Mountains in Death Valley National Park, California, U.S.A. and it is famous for rocks that mysteriously move across its surface.

Just so we're clear here... the Playa is a flat surface in the middle of a desert and the rocks weigh as much as 700 pounds! There has been no concrete explanation for their movement across the dry lake bed.

The phenomenon was noticed over a hundred years ago by explorers and gold miners who noted the large boulders and the gouges they seemed to leave on the surface, but it was not really studied scientifically until about 1948. To this day, the reason for their wayward ways has not been fully explained.
Some people claim that the rocks levitate and move around. Others claim that magnetism between the rocks, surface, and mountains are to blame.

Other more supposedly educated people believe that the rocks move due to the rocks sliding on a thin damp sheet of water or ice and being propelled by the wind. For this theory to hold true, the wind would have to be blowing at over 175 miles per hour to muster enough force to budge the rocks.

Some say that the rock movement is the result of pranksters, but this theory can be ruled out right away as the footprints of the culprits would be visible as well. Some of the trails, including foot prints of people, can be fossilized for years before fading.

Whatever the case may be, in the century that this strange phenomenon has been known about, no one has actually seen one of the rocks move and it hasn't been documented anywhere else on the planet.

Despite this attention, the rocks don't seem to care. They just continue their odd journey across the dry lake bed.

The Curse of The Little Bastard

Was James Dean's Porche Spyder, which he nicknamed "The Little Bastard," cursed? Not only did the car carry James Dean to an early grave, but it was also responsible for several accidents and fatalities after Dean's death.

James Dean was driving west on U.S. Highway 466 (later California State Route 46) near Cholame, California when a Ford Tudor driven from the opposite direction by 23-year-old Cal Poly student Donald Turnupseed attempted to take the fork onto California State Route 41 and crossed into Dean's lane without seeing him. The two cars hit almost head on.

Dean's last known words, uttered right before impact, are said to have been: "That guy's got to stop... He'll see us."

After the tragedy, master car customizer George Barris bought the wreck for $2,500. When the wreck arrived at Barris' garage, the Porsche slipped and fell on one of the mechanics unloading it. The accident broke both of his legs.

While Barris had bad feelings about the car when he first saw it, his suspicions were confirmed during a race at the Pomona Fair Grounds on October 24, 1956. Two physicians, Troy McHenry and William Eschrid, were both racing cars that had parts from the "Little Bastard." McHenry died when his car, which had the Porsche's engine installed, went out of control and hit a tree. Eschrid's car flipped over. Eschrid, who survived despite serious injuries, later said that the car suddenly locked up when he went into a curve.

The car's malevolent influence continued after the race: one kid trying to steal the Porsche's steering wheel slipped and gashed his arm. Barris reluctantly sold two of the car's tires to a young man; within a week, the man was nearly involved in a wreck when the two tires blew out simultaneously.

Feeling that the Porsche could be put to good use, Barris loaned the wrecked car to the California Highway Patrol for a touring display to illustrate the importance of automobile safety. Within days, the garage housing the Spyder burnt to the ground. With the exception of the "Little Bastard," every vehicle parked inside the garage was destroyed. When the car was put on exhibit in Sacramento, it fell from its display and broke a teenager's hip. George Barkuis, who was hauling the Spyder on a flatbed truck, was killed instantly when the Porsche fell on him after he was thrown from his truck in an accident.

The mishaps surrounding the car continued until 1960, when the Porsche was loaned out for a safety exhibit in Miami, Florida. When the exhibit was over, the wreckage, en route to Los Angeles on a truck, mysteriously vanished along with the driver and truck. To this day, the "Little Bastard's" whereabouts are unknown.
