If your life were just to be of say 2 minutes.. would you bother to build your career, look for someone to be intimate with or any other task you so passionately pursue in your life now.. is it mere the length of life that puts you into a situation of taking a lot of actions or none at all?

One of the basic assumption that underlies our tendencies to 'build' ( careers, relations etc) is our ignorance of the fact that life is uncertain and unpredictable. You cannot even say for sure what the next moment will bring for you or will it come at all. This is not to say that mere unpredictability or uncertainity should make us totally inert.. just because you cannot know the future moments does not mean that any action is futile..

Action is not futile. The problem starts when you want to be sure about the future moment and bind your expectations as well as present actions with it. you lean on to something non-existent and when it does come to exist , it is very often not the same as you expected it to be. The next moment IS unpredictable and takig any action with the wrong assumption of certainity of it will very often lead to misery and further struggle. The reluctance to let go of the need to be consistent in case of ones thoughts and efforts often leads one farther and farther into the whirlpool. The tendency to be consistent provides resistence to ones ability to challenge or even be clealry conscious of ones stance.

Merely realizing that one cannot be sure of the next moment relieves one of the burden of the goal-dependency and leads one to action that are goal-oriented but not dependent on them. The actions do not underlie the wrong assumption of future being a fixed and predictable point. The actions are there but with the realization on the very first step of the unpredictibility. The realization replaces anticipation and fear with wonder and surprise.

Once one realizes that present moment is all that one has , then the action becomes the goal in itself. Action no longer reamains a burden; a slave to serve phantoms. And it leaves no residue of broken expectaions. Right action, if there is such an action, can only emerge through presence.
