ONE. Give people more than they expect and do it cheerfully.

TWO. Marry a man/woman you love to talk to. As you get older, their conversational skills will be as important as any other.

THREE. Don't believe all you hear, spend all you have or sleep all you want.

FOUR. When you say, 'I love you,' mean it.

FIVE. When you say, 'I'm sorry,' look the person in the eye.

SIX. Be engaged at least six months before you get married.

SEVEN. Believe in love at first sight.

EIGHT. Never laugh at anyone's dreams. People who don't have dreams don't have much.

NINE. Love deeply and passionately. You might get hurt but it's the only way to live life completely.

TEN... In disagreements, fight fairly. No name calling.

ELEVEN. Don't judge people by their relatives.

TWELVE. Talk slowly but think quickly.

THIRTEEN! .. When someone asks you a question you don't want to answer, smile and ask, 'Why do you want to know?'

FOURTEEN. Remember that great love and great achievements involve great risk.

FIFTEEN. Say 'bless you' when you hear someone sneeze.

SIXTEEN When you lose, don't lose the lesson.

SEVENTEEN. Remember the three R's: Respect for self; Respect for others; and Responsibility for all your actions.

EIGHTEEN. Don't let a little dispute injure a great friendship.

NINETEEN. When you realize you've made a mistake, take immediate steps to correct it.

The origin of the phrase “bless you” when someone sneezes goes as far back as the Bubonic Plagues in Europe. Some believe it to be older still. However it was popularised in 590AD by Pope Gregory when the plague reached the outskirts of Rome. The Pope ordered everyone to prey and hopefully be blessed by God. It was given strength when the Great Plague of London struck as the same sentiments were carried out as the words translated into English as “Bless You”. Of course the Nursery rhyme “Ring around the Roses” also has origins relating to the plague.

I guess you can bless people any way as a gesture of goodwill! :rabb:

I might appear a touch pedantic here but aren’t numbers 3, 8, 11, 16 and 18 telling us what "not" to do as opposed to what "to" do. Just a minor technicality but I thought I’d bring it up. Out of 21 items there are only sixteen to actively do and two of those are a bit dubious. :he:

For instance, why are 6 and 7 at odds with each other? I believe in love at first sight but where’s the logic in hanging about for six months before two people marrying? It surely is down to the strength of their love and relationship.

I get the part of Bubonic plague and the "bless you" origin and so forth, but how is that associated with sneezing in reference to using the phrase "bless you"?

Why do people say "bless you" after one sneezes? (I've even noticed in India people usually say "whaeguru" afterwards)

I have a jist as to why, just like to hear people's opnions :happy:

Well, bless you is just short for "may God bless you". To be honest, if there is any blessing to be done God is the very person to do it! :rabb:

It's just a sneeze, idk i find it awkward especially when you're in a crowd.

My question was: why is it used for a sneeze and not when we cough or cry?

And I got an answer to my earlier question, regarding the Bubonic Plague - sneezing is one of the most common symptoms, so your above statement makes sense.
