This is the difference between eastern and western culture
« on: March 12, 2011, 07:16:51 PM »
You guys would think arrange marriage is a "normal" thing, but this is what happens in the western culture.

Jesse Bender. (Photo supplied)

She's 13 years old, her step dad is from pakistan and she was to be sent away to pakistan to be put on an arranged marriage. She ran away and was reported missing by her mum and step dad.

first of all shes way too young to be getting married when normally in western countries and even in India (not sure about Pakistan) to be registered as married have to be at least 18 or older ...shes 13 :lost:  and then if her step dad is the one sending her to Pakistan ...why didn't her mother oppose it? she could of right? lol and the running away thing exists in Indian culture as well and its looked up as a shame on the family ...as most families in Indian culture think respect is everything. and an child taking such step is considered shameful.

not a good example for comparison.. there could be many reasons for this  in this particular case other than culture behind the picture..

As Killa said, Most of us are Indians here and minimum  legal age for marriage for girls in India is 18 years old and for boys its 21 years old..

When we talk about culture then
Western World
i.e. Europe, the Americas (North and South America), Israel, Australia and New Zealand.

Eastern World

India, China, Japan, Korea, Pakistan, Sri lanka, Afganistan and Burma ( Asian Countries)

yes western nd eastern culture is different in many aspects.
As elle told that a paki dad wants her daughter to get married in age of 13. Nw in these days people think its nt good bt years ago it was very common. Girls got married under the age of 15. Bt nobdy can say it was bad . Our forefathers had a scientific thinking. I think u will laugh when u read this line bt i have an xplanation.
" our grandparants known to this very well that a girl under 18 is nt able to handle the married life nd even it is dangerous to be a mother . So they just arranged the marriage as a formality nd keep the girl with them untill she became mature. After 18 she was sent to her husband's house.

In this modern world it's felt odd that parents r arranging thier children's life bt still they know better . Western govt.s give full freedom to the children nd then issue surveys abt how many girls under 18 got preganant nd looks worrid abt the facts. This looks like parents has no right to take care of thier children."
So every culture has it's own costoms traditions nd they r lawfull according to that culture. People frm other culture can't understand why. So everybdy is right. If u try to argue then it will get worse. So chill nd enjoy.

I accept that our forefathers were more modern in their time than we r in this modern world.

How is sending a girl to Pakistan and getting her married base for comparison for eastern and western cultures?

I understand that this is unfortunate but this doesn't represent eastern/western culture.

Her mother didn't remarry that pakistani dude without a reason. They obviously love each other and now, she's being brainwashed by him thinking it's right to send her daughter away for arranged marriage. I don't know anything about the age of majority of pakistan but that's it was said. Yes, i know she's way too young. And does it really? But it barely happens right? Because as you said, in indian culture, it's looked down upon. Whereas us westerners, we're too stubborn and strong enough not to put up with this kind o' crap.

When we talk about culture then
Western World
i.e. Europe, the Americas (North and South America), Israel, Australia and New Zealand.

Eastern World

India, China, Japan, Korea, Pakistan, Sri lanka, Afganistan and Burma ( Asian Countries)

Israel is not considered a western world.

This isn't her dad. Her mum and biological dad separated therefore, now her mum remarried a pakistani dude.

Hahaha yes, the difference is that, if people in this part of the world have had enough, they've had enough! they get divorced. But! that's not the case though in india or the eastern societies right? Because they shouldn't do that, you guys are taught to stick with what you've got no matter how badly you don't want it.

Just showing the difference. In india, the girl(no matter how much she wants to) but still wouldn't run away. In the western society, girls would run away from this.

As far as, eloping is concerned in India (can't speak for the entire eastern world), the reason most don't make the decision is because afterwards they have nothing to fall back on. There you don't have opporutnities like going out getting a job, etc... to get on your feet. You're more dependent upon your family for financial comforts.

I feel like, here you are trying to say that western girls are more strong-willed, in that case, I would say this is a pretty bad example to support your case.

Any one of us, the chicks or the chaps, would not put up with this, so yes that makes us strong willed. Don't say, you're encouraging people to have arrange marriage or some sort. That may be ok for you guys, not for us though. Especially if the marriage just ain't goin' anywhere, there's no reason to stay. We live our life, we get a life, we get a job, we fall, we bounce back up. We don't depend on anyone. That's how we're brought up.

Here girl’s mother is daft as a brush. In today’s world, what lady will send her daughter to Pakistan, to get hitched?!!!

When push comes to shove any human will do what needs to be done ( come what may ).

It ain’t the Western/Eastern world or any cultural background that plays the role. That’s what I reckon.
