The girl effect!
« on: August 28, 2011, 10:51:34 AM »

The Girl Effect is the unique and indisputable potential of adolescent girls to end poverty for themselves and the world.

The Girl Effect is a movement. It's social change in action. It’s about you using your voice, your talents, and your community to help girls help themselves—and, as a result, everybody else.

Created by people at the Nike Foundation, the Novo Foundation, the United Nations Foundation, and the Coalition for Adolescent Girls, its purpose is to spread the word about what girls can do and to recruit other powerful girl champions, like you. Armed with the tools and the network you need to raise awareness—and a little elbow grease—you can change the world.

An adolescent girl has the power to stop poverty before it starts. But she needs your help. She needs information, healthcare, and education. She needs laws to change, money in her pocket, and she needs her parents, her government, and the global community to see that she is valuable. Her change can’t happen without the girl champions who each bring their own superpowers to the party.

It's not a problem in western countries. Women's can do anything and they have same rights as men. If we talk about India, Pakistan, Afghanistan other counties then its a whole different story. Girls couldn't even go to school in Afghanistan/Pakistan.

Here's an example of what happened to one Afghani girl (GRAPHIC IMAGE IN THE STORY): http://afghanistan.blogs.cnn.com/2010/03/18/shaming-her-in-laws-costs-19-year-old-her-nose-ears/

I don't agree with what you are saying here. Girls MAY HAVE more rights than boys on the papers ( even that may not be the case ) but if you look around , you will see that girls have a little rights over their rights. Kagzi rights are there of course but it all depends on the background/family whether she would be allowed to have the benefits of these rights or not. Rights mean nothing when the basic right to exercise your rights is not there.

And there is nothing silly at all in what Pawan said . It may be a little off the mark in precision but not silly in any way. Moreover I think these people who live outside have a better vantage point to look at the truth of the condition in India. They have better reference points to judge the situation from. And I agree with what Pawan has said. Unless you accept that a problem is there, how can you even start to work on it. Denying the problem is the worst one can do.

...
@Silkpreet -

Very beautiful and creative video... But I am doubtful about their ideas .. all seem a bit airy. Especially you bring into the picture the implementation of these Ideas.. Great IDEA but may be a little less practical...

very interesting topic, i just watched documentary on punjabi channel on punjabi "mutiyara" working in mandiyan ( sabji mandiyan).  Lot of girls are working in markets in punjab and leaving schooll.. they can speak proper english. Very sad story of poverty in punjab effecting young children.
